Chapter 20
The smell of smoke attacks Riley's nostrils from where he lays in the vent, against the hard, rough concrete floor. Forcing him to wake up from his semi-peaceful slumber. When his eyes eventually do flutter open, they settle on an almost unrecognisable metal object lying in the middle of the corridor. The vent's lid must've fallen off and somehow skidded across the hallway. Unfourtunately, it wouldn't do much good as a lid anymore considering that it's been flattened and battered to a pulp. That's when Riley remembers about what happened to Naite and his eyes widen in distress. Forgetting where he is, he pushes himself off the floor, or at least tries to but ends up getting a face full of cod webs and a whack over the head. Wincing, he shoots a hand up to the sharp, thrumming pain emitting from the back of his head and army crawls out of the small space. His body is tired and sore from squashing himself in that tiny vent like a contortionist and once out of the vent, he ends up flopping down against the slightly blood splattered, concrete floor in an exhausted heap.
Sadly, he didn't get to rest for long. First, he saw the large splatter of blood against the wall, patches of the red liquid has dried up in some places however little droplets of it still roll down the walls, down Naite's pale skin and onto the brown leather covering the top of Naite's shirt. Then he shifted his gaze to the man sitting limp against the wall. Naite's hair is more jagged and messed up than ever, occasionally showing a tinge of red here and there, his skin is as pale as Snow White's and his breathing is hardly noticeable. Each breath more scratchy and desperate than the last.
Riley exhales deeply. "You're not dead..." he mumbles in a grateful tone.
He starts to look around from where he's squatting by Naite's side. Outside the hallway and into the opening that leads to other doorways and rooms, the main one being the cafeteria, there doesn't seem to be a single soul in sight. The only activity being a few rats scurrying across the floors for their original homes have either been destroyed or disturbed and the occasional spark and flares of golden specks falling to the floor from a broken light hanging by a wire on the ceiling. In Lucas's kitchen, flickers of orange, yellow and red lick the walls and consume the room until everything inside of it is burnt to a crisp. Luckily, the fire hasn't spread much at all but it sure does stink.
Biting his lip, he turns to face Naite once more. "You, you stay right here. I'm going to go get help..from someone," he says whilst standing up. "Don't you dare give up on me," he warns sternly, shoving a finger in Naite's face before turning to search for survivors.
------------------------
"So stupid!" Nila curses as she wobbles around the room, examining the cramped space around her for the seventh time.
There's nothing useful. No way out. So with a sigh and a hiss of pain here and there, Nila slowly set herself down against the wall again. Clutching her stomach as she does so. Adrian must've gotten her good because Nila finds it hard to breathe without feeling like someone's stabbing her insides just above her abdomen with a kebab stick.
A distorted static sound echoes through the room, which seems to be coming from one of the shelves. Hastily, Nila throws herself off the wall and jogs through the aisles of metal shelves in the rooms. Pushing past cleaning chemicals and wipes to hopefully catch sight of what she hopes the static sound is coming from, a radio. She searches and searches but to no avail, until she hears two familiar voices.
'Shut up. I'm trying to get to the right frequency!' Friday chastises.
'Well try harder!' Kaitlyn's voice demands in a bossy tone. Nowadays, Nila rarely sees that side of her Nila first saw when they met. Now is one of those rare moments.
Nila's heart jumps up into her mouth, goosebumps of excitement tingle all over her body and she can't stop smiling. She turns around in a flash to see a radio (walkie talkie) placed on top of an upside down bucket. Was it a cleaners? A guards? Whichever it was, she couldn't care less. She can feel her eyes getting glossy as she hugs the radio tighter against her ear.
"You're on the right channel."
There's a gasp. "Oh! Nila! Thank god, are you okay? What happened?" Kaitlyn asks frantically but Friday stops her from asking anymore.
"Before we start delving into deep conversation. This is extremely risky. I'm on the guard's channel, they're currently on a break according to Fester but they could-"
"Who's Fester?" Nila asks.
An audible grunt can be heard coming from Friday's side of the line. "She's not important," she mumbles. "But they could still overhear so we have to keep things quick."
"All you need to know is...Adrian is an outright pychopath! He's Earleen's son whom she discarded of because of the death of her wife...I-it's a long story. But I think he's been alone way too long because he's trying to make me his..wife and live with him forever!" Nila speaks the last few words through her teeth in fustration.
"Does Miss Chaucer know you're there?"
"No..Adrian claims that he's trying to 'protect me'," Nila mumbles and wipes a hand down her face. "But enough about me. I know he did something. 'Sent a warning,' he said. What did he do? Is sanctuary safe? Are you hurt?"
Even Friday's breathing goes silent. As if she's holding her breath. For a few moments, Nila questions if Kaitlyn and Friday are even still on the other side of the line.
"What is it?" she prompts.
"Um, you know how every fortnight those Rhinos would take a route through the rainforest to shelter from the storms? Adrian must've made the connections about that on the few months that he stayed here beforehand because he unlocked the door and jammed it a few hours before they arrived. Naite-" Kaitlyn started, shooting an odd glance at Friday as if to ask for permission before continuing. All Friday does is give a meek nod in approval. "Naite tried to shut the door but it was a painfully slow process, more so than usual. He couldn't get it shut in time. He's uh, currently in a coma. Of sorts." Kaitlyn pauses in caution, waiting to hear Nila's reaction but there is none. "..Friday, are you sure? You know how she can be," she mumbles, holding the radio away from her.
Friday once again, silently nods in approval. Earning a shaky sigh from Kaitlyn.
"Well, there was a lot of causalties. Riley and I are fine, as of now, he's with the medical team with Naite. I found a cupboard to squeeze myself in but Friday wasn't so lucky. She was running through the hallways when she caught sight of Miss Dandra and the kids. She escorted them to a safe place to hide but they weren't aware that the ceiling in that particular room was already quite unsustainable before the attack. The Rhinos just barely fit through the small space of Sanctuary and we have no idea what happened but there was a loud smack that sent cracks forming up the walls, connecting with old ones. That's when the roof fell. Miss Dandra was able to pull away Janette. She tried to grasp Maya's hand but with all the sounds happening at once, Maya got confused and reached out the opposite direction. Both her and Ivan got crushed. Friday, luckily, only the left side of her got crushed. But..." Kaitlyn pauses once again. "We've had to um..amputate her left arm."
"There was nothing you could do?"
This time, Friday finally speaks up. "I'm afraid not."
Nila swallows down the lump in her throat. "Were there any more?" she asks forcibly.
"Unfourtunately, yes. There have been twelve other casualties, that we know about. Three civilians got trampled on whilst trying to run away, severe injuries but they're fine. Seven have passed away from injuries. The rest have a few broken limbs or major cuts and the last two, well, they're missing..."
A certain pain hits Nila right in the stomach, like she's been stabbed. So much damage. So much lives lost. And Maya, Ivan! She barely got to know them. They were..so young.
"Nila," Kaitlyn says, her voice as quiet as a mouse's. "Are you alright?"
"NO, IM NOT ALRIGHT!" Nila shouts at her friend without thinking, however, immediately regrets it. "I'm sorry, I just need a moment," Nila says and she takes her finger off the button, placing the walkie talkie back in its original place gingerly.
A moment? Sanctuary can't spare a moment, they might get caught. Friday opens her mouth ajar slightly as if she were going to say something but she doesn't want to be a pain.
"Okay.." is all she settles for.
Nila inhales sharply, holds for about twenty seconds then exhales. Though it does little to calm her down. Tracing a finger over lip in deep thought, she paces the room back and forth. But soon enough the rage becomes too much to bare and she grabs whatever object is closest to her off the shelves and pegs it at the wall. A jar containing pretty smelling bars of soaps smashes onto the ground. Glistening shards of glass and crushed pastel coloured minerals cover the musty, unclean floor. Oddly enough, that makes her feel better even if it's only the tiniest bit. A sense of satisfaction runs through her as she furiously pushes against a shelf with all her might, letting the contents it contained and the shelf clatter against the floor in a bang. After a few moments of letting out all her frustrations, all her emotions, does she finally feel satisfied and she sets herself back down against the wall.
She lays against the wall, fiddling with the walkie talkie now back in her hand a she stares off into space. Her heart sinking but not for long as a scurrying sound echoes in the walls above her and she glances up at the open vent which she pried off in her first couple of hours of trying to escape. Out pops the head of a Chimpanzee. Large familiar, bowling ball-like eyes stare down at her, peering into her soul.
"Gizmo!" she exclaims and tears of joy start to brim her eyes, clouding her vision slightly.
Gizmo makes an excited sound, recognising the girl and in a flash of brown and black, Gizmo jumps down from the vent and at Nila's feet. Where he waddles up to her lap and gives her a mighty big hug.
"Where have you been?" Nila asks, as if expecting to actually get an answer back.
Nila doesn't dare separate the embrace, it's been awhile since she's seen or come into contact with someone she knew from Sanctuary and Gizmo is like Sanctuary's beloved and shared pet.
Unfourtunately, this moment couldn't last for long as not too far off in the distance, the sound of two pairs of shoes urgently walking towards the closet echo down the hallway.
"She's being a pain. Thank you for taking time out of your day to come here yourself, Doctor."
"All fine. As long as Earleen hears nothing about this."
Nila's head flings back to Gizmo in a flash, her eyes wide with distress. "You, you're going to help me."
Nila licks her dry lips before putting her finger back on the button on the walkie talkie. "Hey, are you still there?"
"Yeah. Everything okay?" Kaitlyn asks in a concerned tone.
"No more."
Friday raises her eyebrows and throws Kaitlyn a confused look only to see her holding the same expression. "What?"
"No more people are going to lose their lives because of Earleen. Mark my words," Nila says matter of factly.
"Nila, don't do anything rash!" Kaitlyn warns cautiously, "tell us your location, we'll send people to sneak in and rescue you."
She slowly shakes her head. "That won't be nessecary," Nila mumbles before discarding the radio on the floor beside her.
