Chapter 16
It is Adrian who Nila chooses to spend Breakfast with.
It is Adrian who Nila chooses to spend her working hours with.
It is Adrian who Nila chooses to spend Lunch with.
And it is Adrian who Nila chooses to spend Dinner with, at the very back of the cafeteria on their own private table. This suddenly becomes Nila's everyday schedule for almost two weeks, before Riley starts to become fed up with it.
With his arms crossed, he stares daggers at the two lovebirds, muttering words under his breath from the opposite side of the cafeteria.
"I don't understand," Kaitlyn whispers, tilting her head closer to Riley's but immediately regrets saying those three words as Riley gets ready to lecture her.
Before he proceeds to say anything, he gives a low growl of annoyance, his eyes never leaving them. Watching them laugh and giggle, like they're the ones who have been friends through all the ups and downs Eden has thrown at them since they got here. "I don't like him. It's supposed to be us three, not four. We're the three musketeers! Key word, three. Do you know that the triangle is the strongest shape? Now, we're a square and squares break easily."
"Riley, I don't see why you're fuming over this so much."
He furrows his eyebrows, his face suddenly holding a pained expression. "B-because.." He stutters, "Because, I like her. A lot."
This time, it takes Kaitlyn a much longer time to respond, "Oh! I..didn't know," she replies, fidgeting with the fabric of her leggings uncomfortably. She gulps down a knot forming in her throat, hoping that it wasn't too loud. Otherwise, Riley would see her expression and ask her what's wrong and she wouldn't know what to say. So she focuses on helping him with his problem.
It's what a friend would do anyway.
"Do you think she knows?" Riley asks, no longer glaring at the two across from them.
"Well, you haven't exactly dropped any clues lately-" Kaitlyn starts, wiping a rouge strand of jet black hair from her eyes but gets abruptly cut off.
"But I've been trying! It's just every time I think it's the right moment to make a move on this godforsaken planet, it suddenly isn't! Like when Nila and I were alone in the cave, I tried to talk to her but then Friday showed up. Or when I was being chased by that monster of a Rhino and we were waiting for the bunker door to open..."
"Okay, okay! I get it. Why don't you tell her tonight? Ask to talk to her in private? I don't know about you but I think we're pretty safe from interferences in this concrete box," Kaitlyn mutters sarcastically, lifting her arms up to gesture to the bunker walls.
Riley chews the insides of his mouth, glancing at Kaitlyn, then back at Nila in deep thought. He starts to nod and suddenly straightens his back in confidence. "Yeah...Yeah! You're right! I'll go ask her now, why should I be afraid of Adrian?" he laughs off Adrian's name. "I'll go ask her to come by my room tonight and tell her then."
Riley smiles, showing off his faint dimples and runs a hand through his blazing red hair. After straightening out his clothes a bit, he turns his smile to Kaitlyn. "Thanks Kaitlyn, really. You're the best," he says as he bends down over the short girl and gives her a friendly hug.
Her eyes widen in surprise at first but then she starts giggling at Riley's happiness and how full of glee he seems to be at the thought of Nila and him being together. Maybe this is for the best after all? Riley eventually pulls away and let's out a long huff of air. The nerves kicking in.
Kaitlyn rolls her eyes. "Riley, you managed to sprint away from a mutated Rhinoserous. I think you're capable of asking one girl out, go get her!" she shoves Riley forward about a meter.
"I know, I know.." Riley slowly turns around. "Wish me luck." He grins and turns back around and starts casually striding confidently towards Adrian's and Nila's table.
Though as soon as Riley turns around, Kaitlyn finds herself biting her nails in worry.
"Hahahaha! I know right?"
"Then the monkey hopped on my head, I wish you were there. I was freaking out," Nila laughs at the memory, Adrian's and her hands inching ever so closely together.
Eventually, Riley takes a few more steps up to the table though the two are completely oblivious to his existence. So he steps closer yet another time. But Nila's navy blue eyes are practically clued to lover boy's. Riley clears his throat, deliberately loudly, finally earning a reaction from the couple.
And the annoyed look on Adrian's face gives Riley no doubt that he knows of his intentions of interrupting their time together.
"Hey Riley," Nila greets cheerfully, a sweet smile plastered on her face.
"Uh," he starts, glancing at Adrian he doesn't look to pleased by his presence. "I just wanted to know if, you could..we could, speak in private?" he mutters, fiddling with his fingers.
"Uh sure, when?"
His heart begins beating out of his chest. "Well," Riley gives a quiet, awkward laugh. "I was thinking now?" he whispers as he bends down closer to her ear.
But of course, Adrian has to hear and he butts in. "Sorry but we were kind of in the middle of something, can't you do this later?" annoyance evident in his voice.
Nila nods in agreement. "Yeah. Could you please just give us five more minutes? I'll come over to you soon."
Riley tries his best to hide his disappointment but no matter how much he would tense his face to stay happy-like, the grimace hiding underneath slowly shows its ugly head. He's only just mustered up enough confidence to talk to her now. If he waits any longer, he'll start to get nervous and doubt himself again. Especially with Adrian around. Riley forces the cloud of disappointment around him to go away and smiles politely back at Nila and Adrian.
"Okay, sure," he shrugs and starts to back away. Scratching the back of his head uncomfortably.
But as he turns around, he notices that Kaitlyn is gone. His eyes search around the room but she's no where to be seen, so glumly, he settles himself up against the wall where he and Kaitlyn were originally standing. He tries to rehearse what he was going to say to her again but he can't help but wonder how much of a loner he must look like when everyone else is sitting and chatting to a person beside them.
One minutes passes, two and then three. By this time, everyone's finished their meals and getting ready for dessert. Instant Ice-cream and marshmallows. Riley's doubts of himself start to consume his thoughts, almost as if there were a black cloud of anxiety forming around him. And he feels ever so grateful when a kind lady, dressed in standard, leather Sanctuary clothes and a dirty white apron, holding a bowl of fluffy, pink marshmallows walks up to where he's standing.
"Would you like one?" she asks.
"Yeah, thanks," he mutters grimly and picks one from the pile. Oddly enough, even part of his favourite dessert couldn't cheer him up. Sometimes, Sanctuary make their own chocolate but ever since Brice died and they had the incident with the chocolate bar, he doesn't like to eat the sweet treat anymore.
He decides to be generous and give her an extra five minutes but she still hasn't even given him one glance and he can't hold the anguish in anymore.
Riley watches from afar, with steam coming out of his ears, as Adrian excuses himself from the table completely unaware of Riley's presence. A tiny part of him wonders where exactly lover boy is going to but shakes the thought out of his head as he has much more important matters at hand.
He stalks over, his fists clenched tight in a tamed rage. 'This is so unfair,' he thinks, as he makes his way over. Usually, Nila is the impulsive one. But now it's his turn.
Nila tilts her head upwards from her hands in her lap and makes eye contact with Riley, noticing the hurt in his eyes.
"Hmm? Riley, what's up?" she asks in utter confusion.
"What's up? You lied to me just have more time with that Ken Doll you've been paying all your attention to for the past couple weeks!"
Nila seems taken aback at his rash comment, and her forehead creases in offence. "What? Calm down. Look, I'm sorry I forgot."
"Forgot? Hmph, well you seem to be forgetting a lot of things lately.." Riley says through his teeth, putting a certain emphasis on things. "You know, Kaitlyn has noticed it as well but she's just too kind to actually confront you about it."
Nila glares at him in return and sneers, "You know what I sense, Riley? Jealousy. Jealousy that I've found someone else other than you or Kaitlyn to talk to. It's refreshing. Talking to someone who wasn't there to witness what I saw because there's no memories attached to him. You may not understand that but I do. Do me a favour and get out of my sight, you're embarrassing yourself." Nila rolls her eyes and turns her head in the opposite direction.
Riley chews the insides of his mouth once again, shifting his weight on the spot. 'No no no, this isn't how things were supposed to go. Everything's going wrong,' he thinks in distress. Even though the last thing he wants to do is hurt her feelings, her words hurt more than she knows and his anger overtakes his conscious.
"Fine, gladly. So I guess you'll just move on about Kaitlyn and I just like how quickly you moved on after Anna and Brice's death," he shrugs casually with a blank look on his face.
"What?!" she yells, outraged and stands up, pushing her seat far behind her. "Moved on?! I've NEVER moved on from that! From them!" Tears start to rim the edges of her eyes, causing her vision to blur and she turns her head away again to wipe the little droplets away. "You don't know what you're talking about. Go away!"
Riley takes a step back in silence, surprised with himself. When Nila notices that he's still standing in the same spot, she glares at him intensely.
"GO AWAY!" she roars and he finally does and Nila plops herself down back on her seat sobbing quietly as she's already drawn enough attention to herself from the few people that are still in the cafeteria.
Eventually, Adrian comes running back to her rescue.
