Chapter 14

A single ray of sunlight pours through one of the multiple tears in the drapes hanging high above the colourful rows of wheat, barley and various types of vegetables. The sunset outside paints wonderful colours of orange, yellow and pink across the fields. The room's walls are concrete and the room contains about eight fields. Nila finds herself gawking at the scenery in front of her. All it needs now are some birds singing a sweet little tune and a hammock to lie down on.

"This is so nice, I'll take it!" Riley exclaims, swinging an arm around his side enthusiastically.

"Yeah, Anna would've liked it. What would we do?" Nila turns her head over her shoulder at Naite, who's standing idly, whistling a tune with a blank face.

"Oh," he snaps out of his trance. "The work here is pretty low key, you would just plant some seeds, harvest crops and maintain the fields. Ya know, that sort of stuff. Jeffery, that man over there, will be able to explain in more detail."

"Ahem, I'm sort of wheelchair bound, so what could I do? I feel pretty useless to be honest..." Kaitlyn turns to Naite with a somber look on her face.

"Don't fret! We'll find something for ya to do," he reassures and gives her a friendly smile, earning one in return. "Back on topic, that's our guy."

Naite points over to a man in his mid forty's wearing ancient, old Earth clothes. A yellow, blue and orange checkered flannel and dirt-stained jeans which are connected to and held up by two brown, leather straps over his shoulders. His head is bald and looks as shiny as the sun as he stands up from his crouching position by a patch of pumpkins and into the light. He slouches as he wipes down his clothes. Nila can't help but compare his head to an egg and giggles slightly at the idea. Meanwhile, Riley and Kaitlyn throw her an odd look.

"Jeff! Over here, mate!" Naite shouts and waves a scrawny, pale hand in the air.

Egghead smirks and stands up straight, strolling over with his hands resting on his hips. "Naite! This is unusual, you being out in the wilderness," he remarks, gesturing towards his pale complexion.

Naite awkwardly laughs and scratches the back of his neck,"Haha, I was just showing these kids around. This is Nila, Riley and Kaitlyn. This one sprained a ligament and broke a bone from being chased by one of those forsaken Rhinos."

"Oh! Really? Never liked those darn things. How about you? Riley? How are you holding up?"

"Psst! What were you laughing about before?" Kaitlyn lightly taps Nila's shoulder midway through the conversation.

"Oh, uh, Jeffrey's head sort of reminded me of an egg. I've got a nickname for him."

"What's that?" She asks.

"Egghead," Nila replies and they burst into giggles, their bodies shaking with glee as they share ideas and jokes about Jeffery's head.  After two minutes of laughing from Nila's Humpty Dumpty joke, they finally try to catch their breaths.

They were so distracted that they didn't realise that the man was standing directly behind them, slouching down to their height, he put his head in between theirs. "Whatcha talking about girls?" he pats a hand on Kaitlyn's shoulder and they nearly jump out of their skin.

He merely chuckles at their reaction, especially Nila's dumbfounded expression who has her hand placed on her chest as she recovers from sudden fright.

"Hahahahahaha! You can call me Egghead if you want, it's fine. I know you were talking about my head. Every one jokes about it. But you know what? I reckon eggs are delicious," He places a hand delicately and proudly on his chest. "It's the rotten eggs you've got to look out for, like that good for nothing Dimitri for example. Always sulking, throwing tantrums and drinking his liquor. He hasn't worked for a year now, just locked himself in his room-"

Nila had no doubt that Egghea- Jeffery would've kept going on and on until Naite interrupted. "Jeff. I dislike that man as much as the next guy but we aren't allowed to talk about his state, remember?" he probes.

"Ah, yes. Wouldn't wanna get on Friday's bad side. Let's get to teaching you the ins and outs of farming, shall we?" he jokingly pats Riley's shoulder and gestures for the others to come along. He quickly throws a nod as a farewell in Naite's direction before turning to walk through the fields.

For the next month or so, Kaitlyn, Riley and Nila would go through the same routine. Not that they were complaining. First they would eat breakfast with Friday and Naite, work on the farms for six hours, then return to the cafeteria for dinner which usually ended with a large bowl of Instant Ice Cream. Which believe it or not is a powder that makes Ice cream by simply placing it in a cold place. Nila started to take a liking to Egghead who would remind her of her father back home on Mars with his lame dad jokes and caring nature. Meanwhile, Naite came off as the uncle she never had. And Friday like a big sister. If only all of her family were down here with her to meet her new one slowly forming on Earth, she would finally feel complete once again.

'We'll be together again, some day..' her thoughts wonder as she grazes through the crops of wheat, adding more and more to the large bundle she's cradling in her arms. Nila's hair has grown drastically and now ends at her shoulder blades and her skin is now longer a golden "sun kissed" colour but more like Egghead's skin which looks beige and slightly washed out. Even though they've been working on the farms for a month now, the little sunlight that gets through the clouds and through the tattered drapes covering the farms still isn't enough. Though her dark electric blue eyes haven't changed a bit, which she's grateful for as Nila's eyes are her favourite thing about her.

WOOSH!

Nila's heart does a backflip in her chest. "What was that?" she mutters to herself and drops her bundle of wheat to grab a large stone, about the size of her hand which is covered in sharp edges.

She realises that even though she's been working on the farms, she can't go getting complacent. Animals could still get inside. That's a possibility, right? Nila trudges slowly through tall grass, stone in her hand, towards the very edge of the farms where untamed, medium sized bushes have grown against the damp concrete walls.

She kicks the bush with her foot. "Hey! If your a person hiding in there, come out now! It's not funny," but there's no answer just a very slight whimper like that of a small child.

"Ivan! You're not allowed out here, go back to Miss Dandra now!" Nila demands sternly and crouches down to catch the boy. She places one of her hands inside the bush and rummages around until her hands scraped against something fury. His hair, Nila thinks though it feels a little less sleeker and shorter than she last remembers. She feels around some more, with her head against the bush and her eyebrows furrowing in concentration. Her hands brush against something soft and moist, whatever it is seems to be sniffling against her fingers. That's when she realises, it's the snout of some animal. But before she could pull her hand away, whatever creature that's hiding amongst the bushes engulfs her hand in its mouth and Nila lets out a shriek.

Nila shoots upright and shouts as she does so, staring at the odd creature thats hanging on right her arm by opposable thumbs with her hand in its wet, slimy mouth. To be honest, it sort of looks like a hairy, naked human baby except it's lips and mouth have this distinct pout compared to a human's. It has oversized ears on the sides of its head and its entire body is covered in dark brown straw like hair, the animal's eyes are also brown and are protected by large eyelids.

Nila expects to see that dark, metallic-smelling liquid spewing from her decapitated fingers but after a minute or two, she starts to realise that they're still attached to her hand which helps her calm down. Only a little bit.

Egghead comes sprinting over worriedly whilst Riley helps push Kaitlyn through the uneven terrain of the farms.

"WHAT IN THE MARS IS IT?! Get it off me, get it off me!" she yelps at Jeffery whilst shaking her arm up and down though the creature doesn't move a bit as it sits comfortably on top of her arm, it's tail allowing it some support. Thankfully, for Nila, her hand is finally no longer in its mouth.

What she didn't expect from Jeff was this, "Ah, there you are you pesky little thing!" he smiles and sets his hands on his waist.

"W-what are you doing?!" Nila asks in astonishment.

"Don't worry, he only eats insects and worms. He's our pet, he's a chimpanzee. One of the few animals that escaped mutation. We named him Gizmo, I found him climbing down from the ceiling from the outside looking for food. Cute, ain't he?"

"I-I guess.." Nila stutters as Gizmo makes an 'Oh oh oh' sound and climbs on to her head to look for food and they all share a laugh as they spend the rest of the day off to play with Gizmo.

The week afterwards goes just as planned and on schedule. Smoothly and worry free. Though, that is, until trouble came banging on their door. Literally.
