"What about the rebels? They seem to be taking a different a route, possibly towards our Sector, Sector 1," Mark insists, spinning on his heels to converse with Miss Chaucer once again. In his hands, he holds a tablet showing a film taken by one of their T.O.M Doves (Technological Observation Machines) using its own motion scanner, blue silhouettes of the people of Sanctuary can be seen fumbling in the dark single file in the drains.
"Well we wouldn't want to make this too easy for them. Hmm, perhaps our plant isn't doing her job. Flush them out, set them back on the right track."
"Yes ma'am."
------------------------
"Guys?! Hello? Anyone!" Riley yells out in desperation however the rest seem to be long gone as no one replies.
Little does he know that through the mist, only a fair distance ahead the others stumble through the small confined space in darkness.
"Friday, do you hear that sound?" Dimitri questions and points off into the distance down a different passageway.
To the front of them is a tunnel that heads North, to the right is another tunnel that snakes off to the East. Concerningly, in the tunnel ahead of them a grumbling noise can be heard echoing down the passageway, low and menacingly.
Friday mumbles, "Yeah, I do...Fester?" she throws a concerned look in the woman's direction.
"I don't like the sound of that," she shakes her head and points a finger to her left. "Besides, I'm pretty sure working class is this way."
Friday and Dimitri throw each other odd looks, as if deciding telepathically on what to do. After a silent pause, Friday nods with her hand on her hips and gestures for everyone to continue walking. "Let's keep going. Everyone! We're going this way!"
"We're going this way!" Friday's words echo throughout the dark tunnel. The mist has finally dissipated however the tunnel ahead is as dark as death itself. But he doesn't let that stop him. Determined and well, a tad bit frightened, he scurries through the musty, damp tunnels to hopefully meet up with the others. Eventually he finds himself nearing towards a "fork in the road". Also, an odd, irritating gargling sound loud like that of a sputtering jet gets noisier and noisier as he progresses. Riley, incredibly torn between which path to take, (considering the others are nowhere to be seen heading down either of them) squints his eyes into little slits as if to magnify his vision, his eyes slightly more adjusted to the midnight black shadows in the drain. First he eyes the one to his left. Nothing. Then the one straight ahead. This time he spots something moving. It speckles in the light. The noise gets louder. Whatever it is, it isn't what he hoped it was (other human beings). The thing rolls and crashes against the walls, sometimes transparent or shining a tinge of blue. It's a wall of water and its coming straight at him at high speeds.
"Ah!" Is all he manages to let out and he legs into the tunnel to his left though the water soon catches up with him.
The roaring wave of water splashes against the walls and submerges the tunnels behind him. The water as if alive, takes a turn into the left passageway Riley's darted into and chases him. If he compares the time he ran away from a Rhino to what he's running away from now. He'd gladly take the Rhino. At least then he wasn't alone. At least then, he would've been "shizkebabed" and that would've been the end of it, you know? But a wall of water? Drowning? Option number one sounds much more faster and appealing.
Riley pants frantically as his little teenage legs carry him as far as they can, however, they eventually start to give way. The second he starts to slow down, the poor guy can literally hear the water laughing at him behind his ear as it sweeps him off his tired feet and swallows him whole.
------------------------
Nila grunts silently to herself and furrows her eyebrows in disgust as she weaves her way through the tight crowd marching their way through the tunnels. Almost falling off the little path into the shallow puddle of water that awaits at the bottom of the drain. On both sides hang a decent sized platform for whom Nila presumes maintenance crew would walk along. On the other side a few people walk along the other platform whilst on the other, the one Nila is stuck on, holds two hundred and nighty six or so people and with the musty scent in the air from the who-knows how old water and sweat from the heat. It's not exactly the nicest. But the most concerning thing is that out of the two hundred and night six people, Riley is not one of them. She's spent quite awhile searching for him but he's nowhere to be found. Did he get lost? Did he even make it in here? What if he got injured on the way? She shouldn't of gotten round up in the heat of things and stuck with him. This makes her feel perturbed with worry.
Nila eventually pushes her way through to her friends side. "Kaitlyn, you haven't seen Riley anywhere have you?" she asks, her tone giving an anxious vibe.
Kaitlyn meekly shakes her head. "No. Now that I think about it, not since we got in here. I thought...he was with you."
All of a sudden, the noise Friday and Dimitri had taken note of down the other tunnel they passed ages ago, re-emerges and bounces off the hollow walls of the passageway. Sending tingly vibrations under Nila's feet. The whole group stops in silence, and majority turn their heads to look at what's coming. Everyone is sweaty and exhausted however when they notice the wave plotting towards them, it gives everyone the little "push" they needed to get to their destination. Luckily for them, the ladder that leads up to the outside world can be seen straight ahead about sixteen meters away.
There's a few gasps here and there in the crowd as they notice it through the dark. Though the water isn't what scares her it's what she thinks she sees being carried along within it. She saw a glimpse of a leg, then drenched red hair.
Nila gasps in fear, shooting a hand up to her mouth. "Riley?!" she exclaims but Kaitlyn doesn't hear, she hastily grabs Nila's forearm and hauls her away.
"Come on!" Fester insists and others grabbed their loved ones or friends and sprint for the ladder.
Some would trip over each other in haste trying to get to the ladder first. Fester is the first person there, with her long slender legs and fit frame she sprinted over there in no time compared to Nila and Kaitlyn. Frantically, she wipes her pixie-like fringe away from her face, climbs up the ladder and pushes the lid out of the way. Fresh air hitting her in the face. The woman climbs out, then disappears. Later, others climb up aswell. Nila is one of the last few to get out, to her dismay she had no choice as others were behind her. As soon as the last person is out, she pops her head down and peers into the darkness. The massive wall of water crashes against the end of the tunnel with a booming SPLASH! And with no more momentum to carry it, the water slowly sinks down and down into the little pit in between the platforms where water usually flows. Amongst the water, Nila can't locate Riley anywhere. It's too dark.
"Friday! Riley is down there."
"What?" Friday asks confused, blinking a few times. She bolts over and kneels down to take a look.
"Someone has to go down!" Dimitri yells, overhearing the conversation.
Just as he says this, Naite and Lucas walk forwards, Naite removing his shirt and the bullet proof vest he wears underneath in the process but before anything could be negotiated, Nila jumps down. Causing silence amongst the others crowding around the entrance.
"He's not breathing!" she yells out in distress.
Something in between a yelp and a cry escapes Kaitlyn's throat. She shoots a hand over her mouth to quite nice herself until Nila gets Friday and Dimitri to help haul him up. Riley is motionless, water drops off his drenched body. This is a terrible sight for Kaitlyn. Nila can tell, it breaks her heart. She herself is in tears, she wants to drop to the floor sobbing but she holds it in. She did of course, act all tough and got the citizens of Sanctuary Beach to muster up the courage to rebel. Kaitlyn however is absolutely devastated. Her hands tremble whilst Naite proceeds to do CPR on Riley. Eventually, Nila puts two and two together. The closeness Kaitlyn has had towards Riley, the longing looks she throws him, how happy she gets when they talk alone, the distance that's grown between the three of them ever since Riley and herself have been together. Nila is smart yet naive, sometimes reckless, often complicated. Kaitlyn is sweet, gullible yet the most trustworthy person you can find. Her heartbreaking sobs make Nila realise that she has something she'd never be able to offer Riley and she decides that after this is all over, she'll do the right thing.
Nila can't bear to look as Riley still lies on the wet ground unmoving and turns around to wipe away her tears and stifle her irritating sniffles. She slows down her breathing, leaving a hand resting on her chest. Abruptly, the sound of Riley coughing and gasping for air causes her to swivel around and drop to Riley's side. She throws her arms around his shoulders.
"Oh my god! You scared me," she exclaims, through ragged breaths.
Nila then remembers Kaitlyn and withdraws her arms from Riley, "Surely she'd like to say something to him as well," she thinks. But when Nila turns her head to see how she is, Kaitlyn is no longer there but off somewhere else in the crowd trying to calm herself down. Meanwhile, Riley attempts to get his bearings after nearly drowning to death and one of the nurses that tagged along to fight helps him get back on his feet.
After all the commotion, Nila can sense that everyone is in desperate need of a break. Her wishful thinking hopes that perhaps they could find somewhere to hide and revise or come up with a new plan. But wishful thinking? Screw wishful thinking. That gets you nowhere in life on this planet. You either have the odds or you don't. She knows why the E.P.D.F were taking their sweet time massacring them before. There was only one house accessible in that little square that oh so conveniently had an accessible drain across from it which Fester just happened to spot and know where it lead to. That wave was also oddly well-timed. Now that it comes to mind, how can Fester, a middle-class nobody know so much and get away with so much without being detected by an intelligent, advanced government? We're talking about a society that has managed to deceive the original human race and Mars for eons.
Just like her, soon enough, everyone else starts to get query about their escort and fellow rebel's whereabouts. Nila's eyes dart around the space they're in. You can definitely tell it's working class. The ground below them has nothing growing out of it. Just dirt and rocks. Apart from the large farms Nila can faintly spot in the distance to her right past what must classify as houses for working class. They've found themselves in Sector 2 where they were anticipating a battle and they'd fight to free the enslaved people here. Though, there is not a single soul in sight. The buildings basically resemble those of which Nila saw in that simulator a while back on Mars. The buildings are rotting and down run. Tattered pieces of cloth or scrap sheets of tin or metal have been strategically placed together to make little huts or shelters for those that aren't able to live inside the actual buildings as some are in ruins from collapsing long ago. This stretches on for miles and miles on end, to accommodate for the population of working class. Though Nila can barely call it "accomodating" for what it offers. It angers her to no end, she can feel her blood boil in her veins.
Eventually, someone points out the silhouettes of three people standing atop of Sector 2's wall. The walls between the sectors are much lower than the around surrounding Eden.
"Look! Up there!"
The two silhouettes on either side of the one in the middle, (who's shape appears to be that of a female's) step forward into the artificial light of a spotlight on the top of the wall. On the left stands a brown-haired man with stubble on his chin, wearing a well-tailored black suit and blindingly bright gold jewellery such as a gold watch on one of his wrists. He grins smugly. Whilst the woman, Fester, stands on the mystery woman's right with her arms crossed. Showing no remorse.
"Fester?!" Friday yells.
"What? How could I have possibly betrayed you? Please Friday. I'm surprised you didn't figure it out sooner. How could you expect someone to hold so much information and still manage to stay under Earleen's radar? Don't be gullible," she spits.
"Miss Alwoy, that is enough. The A.I's are ready, lets not make those pests down there wait any longer than they have to," Miss Chaucer's voice booms however she still can't be seen through the shadows.
Silently, all three of them turn their backs on them and enter the rail-less sleek, white bullet train beside them. The doors close, neon blue lights appear along the bottom of it and it sets off at high speed towards its destination.
"A.I's? I don't see anything?" Naite mutters and holds up his motion scanner, looking through the lense. "Neither does this."
"It's like what happened earlier," she ponders. "The motion scanners detect even someone's chest heaving up and down from breathing. Back in the square, it said there was no one when there really was."
The same thing must have crossed the other's minds as everyone tenses up and gets ready to sprint to the closest cover around. A sudden "thumping" noise makes Nila's body jolt. There's the sound of hundreds of pairs of feet hitting against the ground, followed by footsteps yet nothing ahead of them. This puts Nila on guard and she aims her automatic gun in front of her in the general direction the noise is coming from. A man besides her starts to freak out, the suspense too much for him. He panics, hyperventilating and tries to get out of the open by fleeing towards a building..BOOM! What sounded like a mini sonic boom to Nila's ears flies through the air. A visible ray of blue light cuts right through the man and just as it does, as if it were eating away the particles the man consists of, the rest of his body slowly and painfully burns up. Everyone absolutely terrified, turns their heads to look at what it came from. There's a whole mini army of them about two hundred more than what Sanctuary has. They weren't exactly what Nila expected. She expected eery humanoid soldiers like the human-resembling robots on Mars though, she guesses that when you're building a little army of terminators you don't waste your time on their design too much. They're made of a shiny tough metal with a little number on the right side of their chest. Their "eyes" and "mouths" glow fluorescent yellow and apart from their steps, they're movement is fairly silent. Each one wears a red cape along with the Edenial seal, on the back of the cape are the words: "A.I Emergency Defence System." Also, in front of each three meter tall robot stands a human, their master she presumes. Their eyes for some reason glowing unnaturally fluorescent blue. It seems that whatever their master does, the robot copies.
Men and women alike let out blood curdling screams and run away, of course, the A.I's shoot. Nila shoots back, though it only leaves little dents in the robots chest plate as well as their head. Nila makes a run for it and Riley and Kaitlyn follow her behind a fallen, twenty-first century billboard about health insurance resting against some rubble. Kaitlyn breaths heavily.
"What are we going to do?!"
"I think we take out their masters of course but how do you even get in front of them to shoot the bloody guy if that robots equipped with freaking laser beams?!" Riley rants, throwing his hands in the air.
"No! No, please don't!" A woman in the distance can be heard pleading for her life but that soon stops.
Nila makes an observation. When their master finds out about a helpless human being behind them and they turn around, the robot isn't as flexible to just spin around as a human would. It takes them at least eight seconds to step their way around to face the opposite direction. Also, you can hear when they're headed for you due to their footsteps even if they have disguised themselves from sight.
"AHHHHhhhahaa!" an unfamiliar little girl screams.
Nila's shoots over to the side of her where a few meters away, a hectic little brown girl about ten years of age sobs in fear on the ground whilst hugging a younger boy. They seem to be related. The girl wears a tattered, lifeless pink tutu, a stained white printed t-shirt and bare feet. Artillery explodes all around, sending dirt and debris flying into the air. The terrifying melody of gunfire echoes in the air followed by people's screams. Nila's heart breaks. The little girl and the boy are civilians yet a master seems to mistake them as rebels. The robot puts its hand up, Palm facing the little girl, ready to strike.
"No!" Nila shouts and abruptly shoots up, parkour-ing over rubble and trash. She's behind the robot now, she speeds up anxiously not wanting to be detected but the little girl and the boy could die. In panic, Nila slides against the hard ground, aims her gun, remembers what Riley said about taking a breath and relaxing...and fires. Miraculously, the bullets hit the master in the head. Straight away, he collapses and the robot now with no orders to follow collapses aswell. The little girl kneels on the ground sobbing, she's got frizzy, poofy ebony curls and the little boy she's gripping onto nearly looks the exact same except his forehead is bleeding slightly, he sniffles, rubbing his eyes.
"Where-where are your parents? Go! Go to them now, get out of the open!" she ushers almost as if she were angry.
Whilst examining the dead body before her, she notices something flickering in the man's ear. It's white, sort of looks like a hearing aid, humming slightly. Sprouting from the circular object are tiny, glossy silver wires. They actually look kinda soft and reach into the solider's ear. Intrigued, Nila picks it up, dusts it off and puts it against her own ear. The wires wriggle as if alive and it connects itself to the side of her head, Nila shrieks, feeling whatever it is slide through her ear. She grips the side of her head, afraid of what it's doing but the sound of the robot behind her standing up gets her attention. Nila slowly turns around to see the robot alive once again and she nearly forgets to breathe but notices something. When she took a step back, it took a step back. Suddenly, her vision is overtaken with options and orders, perhaps that's why their eyes shone blue?
Kaitlyn and Riley secretly run up to meet her, looking just as scratched and beaten up as she does. And they look amazed.
"How did you do that?" Riley asks, a little bit petrified.
"You get behind the robots and aim for their master's head, I think it severed the link through..this," Nila informs, tapping the white thing on her ear.
Nila fought as much as she could from then on. Her friends eventually found their own robots to hijack, the word got spread around. Others got their own A.I aswell, slowly setting the E.D.S team at a disadvantage but there were still so many. Once Friday gained her own and Sanctuary started fighting fire with fire, she ordered Nila to keep going. There's something that still hasn't been finished and dealt with and that's the devil herself, Earleen. Naite, Dimitri, Lucas and Friday insisted that they'd be alright and blasted down the gate that blocks Sector 2 from Sector 1. Riley wasn't too happy about parting but she promised that once she was finished, she'd come back. And that leads her to where she is now.
Nila marches up the stairs of The Tower she easily spotted in the midst of Sector 1. Sector 1 had such a differing lifestyle from those in Sector 2 it makes her sick to her stomach. Everything from the damn vegetation to even the designs of houses were done and kept to upmost perfection. Everything is clean and well kept and polished and you know, not crawling with rats and rubble from a lost civilisation they deceived millenniums ago. No biggie. Nila snarls, gun in her hand. All the civilians in Sector 1 have been hiding in their homes and the closer to The Tower she gets, the less guarded it is. But Nila took care of the guards she came across. It seems that Miss Chaucer seriously doubted they'd get past the A.I's.
When she does eventually make it to the very top, all is quiet. Nila body slams open the door to Miss Chaucer's regular office but she's nowhere to be seen in there. She then makes way to her more formal office, the control room. The room is dimly lit by one singular, large screen displaying the current situation taking place in Sector 2. Giving the room a dark, ominous blue glow. A dark figure, sitting calmly in a large chair awaits, her fingers tapping against her head in thought. When Earleen realises she has a visitor, she slowly and menacingly stands up.
"Oh? Hello Nila, I never thought you'd actually get here,' she blabbers gently. "Are you here for revenge?"
"You could say that," she replies, leaning confidently against a bench and places her gun beside her.
Earleen scoffs, stepping into the light. Her body is frail, there's no hair left on her head and her skin looks atrocious. The state of her teeth is appalling. The look of her makes Nila grimace in disgusts but she stands her ground. "Because, if anything I've got a pretty big bone to pick with you. I have run this society for decades. You come down here, mess up my business, my life's work, start up a rebellion and you have the nerve to show up at my doorstep. I will not let some bratty, lowlife teenage girl ruin my legacy, my creation!" She warns, her voice rising in intensity.
"Lowlife? You're a revolting disgrace to human kind. You're a vampire, suck the lives out of other people. You treat Mars like a cattle farm. All I am to you is another juicy little calf for you to feast on. Heh, look at you. It's only a matter of time before you fade to nothing."
Her words seem to strike a chord as Miss Chaucer charges towards her screeching with a knife in hand. Surprised, Nila dodges out of the way but accidentally trips over a cord lying across the ground. Earleen, furious, falls to the floor and goes to impale her but she rolls out of the way under a table, now outside of the control room.
"You. Look at what you've DONE to me...this, these..they can't be reversed!" she shouts, gesturing to the damage that has been done to her body.
Nila launches the glass table she's under up at Miss Chaucer and sprints over to the many windows that overlook Eden, her gaze turning to the massive panels that are set up around the perimeter of Eden's wall. The hologram. That's right! An excited smile spreads across her face and she zig zags her way around Earleen but the old lady surprisingly still quite strong grabs her by the hair on the top of her head. Nila winces and struggles, kicking Earleen in the stomach behind her, pushing herself forward. Nila lands face first on the floor, she groans and goes to pick herself back up but just then a electrifying shot of pain runs up her right leg, she just got stabbed in the back of her calf. In pain, she screams. As if this all weren't crazy enough, Miss Chaucer claws at her wound, trying to get as much blood as possible until she heel kicks her in the head. Determined, Nila wobbles over to the main bench, a large computer awaits surrounded by levers, buttons and controls.
"No!" Miss Chaucer objects.
But Nila ignores her, eventually finding the button she was looking for.
"Say goodbye to your legacy," Says Nila, as faint as a whisper but the look of utter terror that spreads across Miss Chaucer's face makes it known that she heard her. Nila glares straight into Earleen's eyes, bearing down into her soul as she lets her hand slam down on the button.
As soon as she does so, a loud "whirring" sound and sputters as if something were shutting down or malfunctioning echoes throughout the entire city of Eden. Miss Chaucer flys a hand up to her chest, gasping for air as her eyes start to be brimmed with tears. The old woman gasps, and collapses onto the floor against one of the windows that overlook her creation. It's finished, there's no going back now. She can't just explain how the radiation magically disappeared. Her hands tremble with defeat. Actually, Nila can almost feel sympathetic for her. Nila wobbles over, holding her wounded right leg and squats down beside her.
"It's okay to die, it's what makes us human," she says quietly. "I can tell you fear death, you fear youth dissipating away."
"No, no it's not. I am not done yet," she murmurs through tears.
Nila sets a hand one of her honey shoulders in comfort. "It happens to everyone eventually-"
"If that's so, then I presume you wouldn't mind if I shot your little boyfriend down dead, hmm?" she says suddenly and whips out a gun from a back pocket of her white coat, aiming it at Riley. Her friends stand at the door, caught off guard. As well as Friday, Naite, Dimitri and Lucas.
"Wh- No!" Nila screams, limping towards him and the gun is shot.
It flies through the air, Riley is like a deer caught in the headlights and just when Nila prepares herself for the worst, Kaitlyn does something unexpected. She puts herself in front of him and the bullet hits her directly in the stomach, sending her falling to the ground.
"You vile, disgusting monster!" Nila screams once again and tackles Earleen.
The glass she was lying against shatters, they both go flying through the air. From how high up they are, it doesn't feel like they're falling, more like floating. The wind slaps her in the face whilst Earleen claws at her like a wild, vicious cat. It isn't long until Nila realises, if she doesn't do something, she'll become art on the bottom of The Tower as well. Nila digs her thumbs into Miss Chaucer's eyes, causing her to shriek and let go. Quickly, she kicks with all her might which doesn't do much in the air but it sets them apart. From then, they've been falling for about fourteen seconds, Nila frantically pushes her way closer to the building and grabs hold of a ledge as she falls but her grip doesn't hold. She then finds herself falling onto a balcony, landing directly on her feet. She screams, but it isn't as bad as what she presumes happens moments later when Earleen hits the ground with a SPLAT.
It isn't long until her friends found her, the sky already creating a new day. Weakly, Nila holds her legs, she's in pain, heaps of it but she can't stop grinning when Riley and the others arrive. Kaitlyn had been taken away by Lucas and a nurse has been escorted here to help her. The nurse tries to give her instructions and advice but all that is white noise once Friday tells her that she's going to contact Mars. Nila, with a sense of accomplishment, looks up into the sky. She's done it. They've all done it. Nila laughs joyfully, ignoring the pain she's enduring.
She's going to see her family again.
