Keep Quiet
Please note: the wording the characters use in the scenes written in this chapter will not be the same as the movie but the scene itself will be similar!
Caleb and Piper hadn't followed Johanna, Tris, Peter and Four. The pair stayed just outside the compound they had all been taken to.
It was nothing to do with either of them and so they weren't exactly invited to follow.
It had been awkward in a way.
Piper had this odd feeling about Caleb, of course she'd never tell Tris that considering it's her brother and the only family member she had left, but there was something off about him.
She didn't trust him.
Although on the other hand she felt for him, he was around a group of Dauntless run aways.
Surely he couldn't feel safe himself, although she was afraid he'd act on it. If Jeanine were to find them she was certain he'd be the first to give them all up.
She had been staring at him, knowingly, trying to psych him out, it had started working when she noticed him take a glance at her from his peripheral, then a second glance and a third. Then he started to shift uncomfortably.
Clearing his throat to make his awkward feeling obvious.
She pushed up from the wooden wall and walked around to stand in front of him, taking him in entirely, she hadn't had a moment to quiz him as of yet.
Tris liked to stick close by him.
"So" she started watching him lift a hand to scratch the back of his neck, "what's your game Prior?"
He finally made eye contact with her, unsure how to answer, not even entirely sure what she'd meant by that.
"I uh" he cleared his throat once more, "I'm not sure what you mean" he didn't.
Although the fear in his voice made her think otherwise, what would he have to fear if he had no game plan?
She took a step closer still leaving a metre or so between them, she watched as he twiddled his thumbs awkwardly, unsure what else to say and sensing from what he had already said, he had messed up in a way he didn't know.
"I want you to know something Caleb" she plastered a smile on her face, making another stride so she could place her hand on his shoulder, feeling him relax by the change in her tone and facial expression she continued, "I love Tris, dearly, as I'm sure you do" she stopped, looking at him when he hadn't responded.
"Yes. Yea of course"
She nodded, "she's never hurt you, but you know that" he nodded this time, "even if you betrayed her, she cares too much to hurt you"
She removed her hand from him and turned to lean back into the wooden wall again.
Caleb let out a small laugh to diffuse any tension.
"But I would" she added while looking out into the open space.
"Hm? I'm sorry?"
Still not meeting his eye, "if you betrayed her, she wouldn't hurt you" she paused, mostly for dramatic effect as a dauntless would do, "but I would".
She could practically hear the harsh shallow he had in response.
So she faced him once more, "although, you shouldn't have to worry about that, right?" Caleb nodded instantly, "good, I'm glad we are on the same page now Caleb"
The awkward silence filled the air after she'd spoken.
The pair just looked out at the grassy land, although the peace she started to feel didn't last very long, the sound of what she believed to be an engine had her brows crease. Pushing herself up yet again she squinted her eyes to look through the large trees.
Vans.
Her eyes widened.
"Fuck" she muttered grabbing Caleb by the collar and yanking him inside to where Johanna and the rest of them had been.
"What?" Caleb tried to look back but she wouldn't allow it, "what is it?"
She pulled him toward the stairs, "Jeanine, Eric I don't know" she began her climb of the stairs, "one of them, they are here"
Caleb ran up behind her, in fact it was the fasted she'd ever seen him move.
She swung herself around at the top to look around for everyone, watching as Johanna made her way towards the pair.
A concerned look had plastered itself on everyone's face, Four made his way toward Tris while Peter stood up, looking like - for a split second - he was going to run toward Piper and check if she had been alright. He didn't.
"I'm going to say this as calmly as possible" Piper looked toward Johanna taking the brief moment to catch her breath.
"Jeanine is here!" Caleb yelled out to the room before she could continue.
This being something that earned him a rather hard punch in the stomach, Tris and Four made their way to the large open area, watching as the trucks piled in, coming toward them.
"No she isn't" Piper confirmed, "she's not stupid enough to come after us" Peter's brow raised knowing how hellbent on revenge the woman would be, "she is waiting for us to come to her or rather be taken to her" she confirmed, making her own way to look out.
There was countless Dauntless looking guys jumping out and making their way towards them.
"We need to go, now" Four eventually spoke up.
The sound of footsteps, loud ones, were coming from below them, so of course they couldn't escape the easiest way.
Piper rolled her eyes and turned toward an open window sticking her head out to see the thin wooden ledge, she placed one leg out before turning to look at the person who had their hand wrapped around her arm.
"You'll fall"
Peter Hayes, full of surprises.
"You'd care?" She spoke up, looking at Tris who was climbing out the window at the opposite side, Peter hadn't answered and so she snatched her arm from his grasp, "that's what I thought".
She had already dived below the window and pulled herself out, Peter shook his head.
He could let her fall.
"Eric!" She turned her head to look his way once again, "Eric, they're up here!" She knew she should've expected this but she hadn't.
Peter was ready to hand her in.
Caleb ran past him and towards Piper to follow her out, making rather annoying mutters at the height.
Piper continued to climb along, finding a spot she could jump down to, hoping to reach the ground from there. She had however been trying not to speak, more signal Caleb's way due to the moat of men with guns below them.
Although, the small drop she'd found only had one gentleman stood below, so of course, it was time for the fun she'd missed being here.
She whispered looking at Caleb, "I'm going to jump down, as soon as I get that gun, you are going to jump-"
"Jump?" Caleb practically shrieked, getting shushed.
"Yes, jump, you will jump and make a run for it, I'll follow" she nodded his way watching him do the same.
She had climbed down as quietly as possible, turning outward so she was stood directly above this poor guy, sucking in a breath she jumped, landing atop of his shoulders and planting her elbow firmly into his head causing him to fall forward and allowing her to grab the gun before rolling off his shoulders and standing tall.
She nodded to Caleb who jumped down, very awkwardly.
Shaking her head at him was cut short as this guy began to stand up, he'd be ready to alert anyone around him, which of course, she couldn't allow.
Lifting the shotgun looking gun shed stolen she battered it into his mouth as hard as possible.
He had fallen once more but didn't seem to give up.
While Caleb set his feet on the ground, she found herself behind Eric's guy, ripping off the unbuttoned shirt that covered her tank top and wrapped it tightly around his neck, knowing she'd be able to knock him out without killing him.
He tried to grip the shirt, she only pulled harder each time until she heard what she hadn't wanted to hear at all.
A snap.
A breath was sucked in as she dropped the man, watching his lifeless body hit the ground.
She had killed someone.
Caleb looked toward him, telling her that it was okay, she had to do it, not that she heard, she was too zoned out on what she'd just done.
What if he had been under the mind control? What if he was innocent and she'd just taken his life?
The sound of thumping footsteps and running had Caleb shake her until so focused in on the mass of guys running their way, lifting the gun and smacking it into Caleb's chest she yelled, "go, now!" Caleb gave her a look, unsure why she was trying to save him, "don't make me regret this, GO!"
He did as he was told, listening to the sound of the fight she'd just gotten herself into, against around 6 men.
She had amazingly taken out about 4 of them before more came, multiple grabbing her arms and holding her in place, speaking into what must've been an ear piece.
They all looked ahead while a man she'd hoped to never see again walked around the corner.
"Eric" her teeth had been gritted, gaining her a kick to the back of the knee from one of his soldiers, buckling her knee she fell to land on them, her knees that was.
"Piper" he tutted multiple times, shaking his head he continued, "you could've been great" he kneeled down to face her, "could've been with us not-"
Getting cut off by her spit hitting his face.
Eric stood lifting his gun high and smacking the top of her forehead with enough force to knock her out.
Clearly angered by her reaction he yelled at the soldiers to carry her and follow him, which they had done no question, even if unsure of the reason, they knew not to question.
He made them carry her to the bottom of the stairs walking up to find Peter still stood, biting his fingernails while waiting.
"Hayes" Eric greeted to have the man turn to face him instantly, "you're going to come with us, help Jeanine to track down your new found friends" the same wicked smile he always had on his face.
Peter could only shake his head.
"Wow, I helped you here, shouldn't I be- I don't know- pardoned?" He raised a curious brow.
Eric repeated that final word to himself a few times, a smirk finding his lips, watching as Peter did the same, thinking he'd agree.
Eric stepped closer, the humour dropping from his face.
"No-" Eric stopped with a smile, "in fact, you know what Peter?" Getting a confused look in response, "I'm feeling generous so, I'll give you the choice" he let out a whistle.
Peter heard the sound of footsteps coming up the stairs behind Eric. Watching while multiple men appeared and stood still for a brief moment until they'd all reached the top. The 4 at the front stepping aside to reveal an unconscious Piper who two of them held up, dropping her body to the floor with a thump.
Peter instinctively lunged forward to go to her.
Eric's hand smacking the centre of his chest, shaking the other pointer finger.
"You can come with us, and I will promise you her safety" he took a quick glimpse at her, lying there, chest rising and falling and blood that had began to dry somewhat still trickling down her forehead, "or you can leave now" he looked back to Peter, straightening the shirt of his shoulders.
A large smile covered Eric's face as he cleared his throat. Peter stood waiting for him to continue, which he eventually did.
"You can leave now, and I'll kill her"
