Be My Protector
Piper had drifted to sleep peacefully beside Peter that night, or closer to being the morning, after she'd dried herself off. Peter found himself staring down at the girl in total awe of her. At least he had been lucky enough to have her, as brief as it may be, because anyone who could even call Piper a friend was a lucky son of a bitch. He however hated the idea that in his losing her she'd find someone else, even if he wanted her to be happy, he wished it could've been with him. He could only hope it wasn't someone like that Jack who stalks around trying to get close to Piper. She was too good for him, Peter knew his type. Despite Peter not exactly being the talkative friendly type, he could almost always work out the bad eggs in a group. Jack was certainly a bad egg.
He had in turn fell asleep beside her after his brain being on overdrive for nearly an hour, thinking about Piper and what could happen in this hell hole. He'd been surprised they had found Tris yet, perhaps she had been more suited to Dauntless than he'd initially thought, though Dauntless did tend to face their issues head on.
The sound of chaos just beyond their little room had the pair waking up rather abruptly. Shoes were shuffling, people were yelling and both of them tried to make their way over to hear more. Reaching the wall Piper placed her ear up to try and hear any of the muffled yells. Considering she'd just been woken and tried to practically run to hear what was going on she had lost balance when she reached the wall initially. Peter had been in the perfect position to catch her near fall and hold her up. His hands on either side of her waist.
The pair found each other's eyes, through the night had been a moment of passion, heat. This was something different entirely, the gentle way he held her and the gaze they both had for each other was fat more intimate in the sense that it was love and not lust. Peter found himself again desperate to tell her how he felt, in a sappy attempt to show her he loved her. In fact he'd opened his mouth to let the words out when Piper's head snapped back to the wall.
"Was that Tris?"
Piper Canning sat at the edge of the bed, she'd heard her friend being taken away to Jeanine, Peter claimed he didn't know what for and she'd believed him, though she hoped he'd be able to find out. Peter on the other hand was stood with his back pressed against the wall behind him waiting for any kind of information.
"What if they're hurting her?" Piper began to think aloud. He hadn't had it in him to lie to her, of course they'd be hurting Tris, that was all Jeanine wanted.
"Tris is a big girl" he pushed himself off the wall making his way over to sit by Piper, "I'm sure she'll be able to handle herself" he gave a rather halfhearted smile while lifting his hand to her cheek giving her a gentle caress, "I'll keep you safe" at those words her eyes met his.
He would keep her safe, in fact he'd do anything to do so, he just hadn't known that Piper had the same plan. If it came down to her or Peter, despite his secrecy and lies about her best friend, she'd save him in a heartbeat.
"I know" her whisper was pure and genuine as much as the kiss Peter leaned down to plant on her lips. A soft kiss which acted as a promise in some way.
Both their attentions were snapped to the door as it opened to reveal Jack with three other men.
Piper stood followed by Peter who stepped in front of her. The look on this guys face told him all he needed to know. He wasn't here out of kindness or to impress Piper, especially not with three guards behind him. The door was locked as quick as it was opened and the stepped further into the room. Jack more so than the others made his way over to stand in front of Peter.
"Did you two kiss and make up?" His voice was mocking while he watched Piper's face fall, she had thought naively that he was a friend. He had been kind to her or at least she'd thought so.
His smile had been almost cynical.
Peter put his arm around the front of Piper's waist pushing her further back behind him. Watching as Jack took one step further forward, "you won't touch her" his words were a warning, one Jack would've been wise to listen to.
The only thing he did however was laugh callously before looking over her shoulder to the larger built men, "grab him"
Peter immediately went into defence mode after being grabbed by the forearm, Piper stumbled backward in shock landing on the edge of the bed she'd just been perched on, watching while the three of these men tried to fight off one man. Peter Hayes. She watched while he threw punches, smashed a man's head off his own knee while the other two had been smacking him from behind. She had been about to yell when Jack had grabbed a fistful of her hair tilting her head up and causing her to yelp.
Peter stopped what he was doing and turned to face them, seeing Jack holding his girls head up by her hair while a small little knife being held in front of her neck, his smile hadn't seemed as menacing as before, he now just looked psychotic, lifting the blade and using it to caress her skin.
"Stand down Hayes" his voice had been eerily calm.
Peter lunged forward but was cut short when he watched the redhead nick Pipers jaw, the blood immediately beginning to run down to her neck.
"Stop" Peter stood still allowing two of the goons to grab an arm each. Giving in and allowing them to do what they must so long as he stopped Piper getting caught in his cross fires.
"Next is her neck" he confirmed placing the knife back against the skin it had originally touched.
The blade had been cold while it hovered between touching her skin and not, lifting her head she found Peter already staring at her wide eyed. He almost looked if his eyes had started to gloss over. She wanted to run to him, but she couldn't. She could only sit here and watch or she'd die before she could help.
"Fine" Peter allowed the men holding him to kick him down to his knees.
"Smart" Piper looked up to see the demented look change back to that malicious smirk while he pulled the knife back allowing his to lift her hand and cover the cut spanning from just below her ear to her jaw, around two inches she'd guess. "You're going to do exactly as Jeanine says.." he smiled looking to Piper, "or I'll kill her"
She'd stayed where she was while Jack stalked forward closer to Peter who had still been on his knees, grabbing his curls and lifting his knee to now collide with Peters face. Piper couldn't help but lunge forward only to be caught by the one guard who hadn't been holding Peter down. His had been burst while he looked down letting out a cough while the blood started to run down from his nose over his lips. Piper only wanted to run to him and fix this, she hadn't even known where this had come from. She had then been thrown back to the bed.
"Jeanine requires your presence" Jack looked down at Peter before tilting his head to the two gentlemen asking them to take him which they had, "don't you worry, I'll take good care of Piper"
She watched as Peter had started to thrash about as soon as Jack spoke, after Peter had crossed over the door frame and the door had been locked, Piper could only stare ahead at Jack cautious of him already. This felt far too familiar.
Riley.
Drew.
Now Jack.
What was it with men thinking they could walk all over her.
She watched intently and silently while he made his way over pulling what looked like an extremely high tech walkie talkie as if he were five, when he'd held it up to show her cowered away on the bed she'd realised it held a camera. Connecting him to Jeanine, something she could use to her advantage. She just had to stay calm and wait for the exact moment.
Peter had been thrown into a room with Jeanine, his hands now had been cuffed behind his back, while she sat smug in her chair, her plan all coming together.
"I'm going to need your help Peter" she stood hands on her desk while she talked down to him as if he were a child, "you're going to keep your friend Tris in order and in return I'll spare her life" her head turned to a large glass looking screen which lit up to show Piper sat on the bed, looking terrified and stuck alone in a room with Jack.
"If he lays a finger on her-"
"He won't" she confirmed, "so long as you do exactly as I ask" stepping around the desk, "do we have a common understanding of what must be done?" So passive aggressive. He'd have choked the life from her body if he had use of his hands.
Peter closed his eyes for a moment and thought back to Piper's words.
"Let me speak to her and I'll do exactly as you ask"
Jeanine seemed to let out a sigh which made him believe he'd asked too much, until she nodded to one of the gentlemen, the screen lit up once more showing Piper once again, looking less scared than he had been for her. His knees still firmly on the floor while he stared ahead. She was planning something, the look on her face told him so, he'd been here before with her and he knew how capable she was. Perhaps talking to her now would only be a distraction, she couldn't see him or so it would seem by the way she stared at Jack.
He shook his head looking down, he couldn't let on to Jeanine his reason for no longer wanting to talk with her after all this but he had to let her do what she did best, protect herself.
"Aren't you going to speak boy?" He shook his head once again, "suit yourself" the screen had gone blank.
Piper was doing just as Peter suspected, thinking how she could subtly remove Jack from the equation without being as obvious because when it came to strength she knew he had her, but when it came to smarts she took the cake and she'd use it to her advantage.
"I was sorry to hear about your friend" his words had her head snap to his direction with furrowed brows unsure just what friend he meant, perhaps Tris, "Will - was it?" He watched while her face dropped, this had been what Peter refused to tell her, had Jack known? If he had he would only tell her out of spite, she knew now that Peter had only kept this from her for her own peace of mind, not knowing how her friend died because he knew as well as she now had that it would've torn her apart, "must've felt like a slap to the face to learn just what happened- oh" a wicked like grin bared all his teeth, "you don't know do you?" Piper only stared at him feeling her jaw click from how clamped shut her mouth had been, refusing to give him any satisfaction, "you don't know who murdered you friend - which means" he paused stepping closer to the girl to grab her by the top hem of her T-shirt, "you don't know one of his, one of your very own friends took his life"
