AFTER DUSK

After Dusk

Peter Hayes

Piper Canning

————————

Every story has a start, a middle and an ending, Peter and Pipers story was never over.

Narrowly escaping with both their lives didn't mean they were safe, no one who escapes Jeanine ever would be.

—————————

I do not own any of the characters in this book besides my OC's of course.

The timeframe will be a little different, I believe the second book or movie takes place not long after the first, but from here onward this will be months later rather than just days.

This book may not be updated as regularly as the first as I have two other stories on the go at the moment too so please bare with me, however, the love on the first story was insane and I appreciate it so much, the story wasn't over and I wanted to bring you more so I hope you enjoy, and the writing should hopefully be a little less cringey : )

The group that had stuck together through their escape still stayed together in hiding at the Amity compound. Tris and Four had somehow made some arrangements that kept them safe, for now.

The beds were surprisingly comfier than those at the Dauntless compound. Piper lay staring up at the roof of the wooden hut or lodge type build she practically lived in. Something that had been built years ago but never used, until now. She tossed a ball of rubber bands up in the air, catching them as they came back down to her.

Heavy sighs fell from her lips every couple of minutes.

She felt awful for thinking it, considering Amity essentially saved their lives but, it was so damn boring over here.

Anything she could've done she had, now she was alone in a hut playing with elastic bands. She lay in brown cargo style fitted trousers, brown boots, a white vest top covered by a dull red unbuttoned shirt.

Her mother would flip at the fact she had her boots on her bedsheets, although they were new, in fact, this was the first day she'd worn them.

The final time she caught the ball she kept her hand in the air for a few more seconds, trying to come up with some sort of idea, anything that she could've done. Her arm dropped to hang off the side of the bed, when she came out of her thoughts with fewer ideas than she had going into it.

Three gentle knocks came at the door.

Piper sat up, slowly and while stretching she yelled, "come in! I'm decent" trying to make any sort of joke, just to cheer her up a little.

In came Tris, Piper raised her head to capture her in her gaze and her eyes stopped at her hair.

It had been chopped, totally chopped. All that was left fell flat on her head, just enough to brush over the top of her ears. Piper watched as Tris raised a hand up to her hair, conscious of the girl before her staring wide eyed.

"I felt like a change" Tris walked toward Piper, "I needed a change" she sat gently down beside her friend, looking around at their surroundings.

Piper let out a sigh yet again, "tell me about it" she stood from the comfort of her bed, making her way to the set of drawers at the other side of the room. Brushing her fingers along the dustless wooden top, "don't get me wrong, Johanna has done us a huge favour but.." she trailed off looking up at the framed picture of a plant above the set of drawers.

Tris stood up so shortly after getting herself comfortable, walking over to her friend, staring up at that very same picture.

"But, there's not much to do" Tris continued what Piper had started, laying her head on the girls shoulder, "besides farming or building that is" she let out a small laugh, vibrating Pipers shoulder a little.

Piper laid her head atop of Tris's, taking in the moment, she didn't feel quite as bored as she'd done being alone moments ago.

"I think we shall leave that to the boys no?" Piper threw back.

They stood together for a few moments at least, soaking up the moment, before the two lifted their heads and wandered around the room aimlessly.

Piper picked up the bracelet Christina had given her, the same bracelet that she and Tris also owned, to tie the three together. Will had been given one too. Tris watched as Pipers face fell, not in a way of boredom, more sadness.

Guilt.

She looked down to her fingers, running delicately over the beads, it was their bracelets. Tris instinctively hid her arm, she hadn't worn hers since they'd left. It was always in her pocket, she just couldn't bring herself to put it on.

For a differing reason to Pipers for no longer wearing her own.

Piper couldn't because she knew all 4 of them couldn't wear them together anymore, Will couldn't put his on every morning anymore. God did she miss him, him and Wren. Her life had felt half empty. She had loss two of the most important men in her life within days of each other.

Tris on the other hand couldn't bring herself to wear it because of what she and only she knew what she'd done to Will.

Piper lifted her head to find Tris's eyes on her hands.

Clearing her throat she put down the bracelet and captured Tris's attention, "well that got very depressing very fast" she let out a very synthetic chuckle.

Tris laughed hollowly along with her friend, unable to own up to what she'd done. Something that she had quite literally told no one, the only person who had seen was- it was her mother. She wasn't exactly around to talk about it.

Well, there was one other person who knew, even if Tris hadn't wanted them to.

Piper turned her head at the sight of someone passing her window, it was Four and he wasn't alone.

Tris had been whispering to Four for the past few minutes while Marcus stood across from Piper. The 4 outside their small hut.

It was very clear to Piper that she was the only one of them who didn't know what had been said, not that she overly cared. She just felt a bit outcasted at that precise moment.

"Okay" Marcus clapped his hands together, "I'd say it's breakfast time" he pointed over to the large dome that was slowly filling with people.

The three of them, besides Piper made their way over, Piper stayed back for a short while, staring up at the sky and wishing Wren or Will could help her, guide her.

The sound of the wooden door squeaked behind her, her body jolting ever so slightly, not realising there was anyone else left in their out of the way accommodation. She found herself twisting around, getting a clear view of the large door opening.

Her lips parted.

Peter.

He walked through the door with his head down, not noticing that she still stood there alone, closing the door tightly behind him.

Standing tall in dark brown trousers, a dull orange T-shirt that fit around his torso as though it was made just for him and a lighter brown shirt unbuttoned over. Black boots covering his feet.

Peter only just noticed Piper when turning around and lifting his head, trailing it slowly over her body, taking in every inch of her, slowly, carefully. That was until she cleared her throat allowing him to awkwardly raise his eyes to meet hers.

"Peter" she spoke coldly.

He took at deep breath, clenching his jaw at her body stiffening up.

He made his way over, taking his time and stopping only a few feet from her, her eyes hadn't left him, not once while he made his way to her.

"Piper" his own voice came out callously, heartlessly while he looked down at the girl, partially because of her height, partially because of what had happened. He watched her shoulders tense.

Standing there for a minute or so before walking passed her, bumping her arm with his own as he did.

She only just managed to balance herself. Turning around while tutting and watching him walk toward the dome.

Asshole, she had thought.

She had sometimes wondered how she'd fallen so helplessly in love with him so quickly, when he could break her heart, her trust, and leave her even quicker.

On her own walk to the dome she tried not to think about him, about what had happened. Although she couldn't, he had lied to her. Everything was built on a lie and it would continue to be.

She shook her head at the thought, trekking through the grass.

She was hungry she had to admit although at least the food here was better than abnegation would be according to Tris, Amity may serve similar foods, a lot of veggies of course but at least it was substantial. In fact Piper often found herself wondering how Tris survived with the abnegation food.

The dome was packed full of people awaiting their food.

She was almost last to get hers, walking over to the group, sat along a brown bench like table, the only space left being beside Peter.

She stood staring at the seat for a moment.

The sound of Caleb clearing his throat brought her back from her thoughts. It also had her see Peter had taken notice to her stood there, not wanting to sit by him. She couldn't tell if he looked upset, he was back to the Peter she first knew, the cold, emotionless one.

"I can sit there" Caleb stood abruptly, sliding his plate across the table, Piper was about to interject but he held a hand up, "it's alright I don't mind, it saves any awkwardness" He let out a rather innocent chuckle, not realising that the very statement he made about avoiding awkwardness had made it awkward.

Peter just shook his head as Caleb sat beside him. Lifting his head to watch as Piper sat by Four.

She watched as he let out a rather humourless laugh, "really mature of you" he shook his head yet again, shovelling a forkful of egg into his mouth.

Piper hadn't said anything back, which he knew wasn't like her but of course he was too proud to ask if she was alright, hell he knew she wasn't, but it wasn't his place to check on her anymore.

She just ate her food in silence, refusing to even meet his eyes.

Tris was concerned for her friend like anyone would be, she knew how much she loved Peter, even if she'd never understand why, and they had just stopped talking, in fact they'd practically stopped all contact unless absolutely necessary.

So after finishing breakfast when Piper made her way to the large tree trunk she always sat on to stare up at the sky, Tris joined her.

She hadn't said anything at first, just looked up as Piper was.

Piper let out a sigh before looking at her friend.

Tris just shrugged trying to play dumb, "out with it then" Piper leaned down to yank a flower out of the ground, it was small and white and rather pretty.

Tris watched as Piper slowly picked the stem apart.

"I just want to make sure you're okay Piper" Tris started to speak, her friend still not making any eye contact, "are you ready to tell me?" Her words got the eye contact out of Piper that she had been looking for, "about what happened with Peter?" This time Piper swallowed. Rather harshly in fact.

She shook her head looking back up at the sky.

"There's nothing to tell, he lied to me, that's it" she shook her head closing her eyes, "not only did he keep something from me, when I found out he continued to hide a secret for somebody else" Tris realised then exactly what had happened between the pair, Piper turned to face Tris entirely, "it was about Will, he knows what happened to Will and he won't fucking tell me" she shook her head standing up.

Tris followed suit and stood up, unable to speak, unsure what to say.

Peter was keeping the secret for her, he was lying to Piper to avoid them falling out, Peter wasn't the bad guy here, Tris knew it was her.

She just didn't have the heart to tell Piper what really happened.

What hurts the most is people can go from people you know to people you don't.
