Chapter 9

I rummaged through my closet to find an outfit to wear. There waiting for me were a pair of skinny jeans and a simple black tunic. I slipped on my clothes and went on my way to Nova.

As soon as I entered the restaurant, the first thing I realized about the restaurant that it was really dark. Everything in there was black. The ceiling, the floor, the chairs, the tables, every single last thing. I looked down at my outfit and smiled. I fit right in. The 13-year-old me would have loved the restaurant, simply because of its design.

The restaurant was completely empty and to be honest, I felt quite uncomfortable. There didn't seem to be a single soul here. There was a waiting area so I just sat down waiting to be served. Seemly out of nowhere a girl, no older than 18 just appeared.

"Oh gosh! You scared me there." I screamed as my heart pounded against my chest. I looked at her face, she had pitch black hair, and a skin hugging, short, black dress. Her eyes were so dark that they could be mistaken for black from a distance.

The girl seemed unaffected by my shock. "Hello, Welcome to Nova. How many are dining with you?" She asked as if the very act of saying a word was boring her to death.

"I am supposed to be meeting with someone here, so can I get a table for two please?"

She sighed out loud, "Okay. Follow me."

The restaurant was not very big. In the dining room, there were booths along the walls and chairs and tables in the middle. The girl seated me and darted off.

I looked at my watch and it was almost 5'clock. It looked like my date was standing me off. I waited for another 15 minutes until I was getting ready to leave. Jack didn't even have the decency to call and say he was late or that he couldn't come. I mean what you could expect from a guy named Jack. Jack was probably jacked up in the head.

Just as I grabbed my purse and headed for the door, Jack leaped through the door like a little ballerina.

"I am so sorry for being late!" he exclaimed. His clothes were slightly messed up and he struggled to breathe.

"What is your excuse?" I asked, feeling agitated. If you aren't going to be there aren't certain time, say so. Time was precious and some people didn't seem to understand that.

"I was stuck in traffic and my phone got lost!" he almost shouted, still being out of breath.

I internally rolled my eyes. "Okay, let's sit down and eat then."

We looked at the menu and the choices were...interesting. There was an ox goo soup, pickled horse eyeballs sautéed in garlic, dragon meat and the list went on and on. I continued looking at the menu with nothing but pure horror tainting my features. What kind of poppycock is this, I thought.

"Are you sure we are at the right place?" I asked, each word sounding more uncertain.

He had a big smile on his face, "Yeah I am sure. Don't worry, the food isn't what it actually says it is. It just looks that way."

I looked at him skeptically.

He smiled me,"Don't worry, the food here is great."

I had not eaten the food as yet so I couldn't judge. I gave both him and the food the benefit of doubt. I hoped that both wouldn't come to bite me in the butt.

"Okay then," I said slowly. I decided on the most normal sounding thing on the menu, the dragon meat with turnips. When I told Jack I was ready he snapped his fingers and yet another young, black cladded person popped up. Those people just came so quickly, they could have been Usain Bolt's cousins.

The young guy took my order and Jack and I talked before our food came.

"So what do you like to do for fun?" I asked trying to get a conversation going.

"I like playing tennis and writing." He said while playing with the salt and pepper containers.

"Oh" I grabbed the salt and pepper containers from his hands, "I used to play tennis when I was younger, but I haven't picked up a racquet in years."

He looked up at me with nothing but pure delight painted across his face. "That's cool, I play about 3 times every week. Maybe you can pick up a racquet and we could play one day."

 "Maybe we can."

A grin rested comfortably on his face,"So what do you like to do in your free time?"

"I absolutely love reading and I enjoy cooking as well, even though I am not the best at it."

He chuckled, "If you like cooking I think you will love the food here, it's killer."

Before I could even question what he meant by that, our food arrived. My "dragon meat" didn't look weird or scale like at all. In fact, it looked like a beef fillet. It didn't smell too bad either. I never thought I would say this about something called Dragon Meat, but I wanted to eat it.

I took a bite of the food and the only word I could describe the experience was pure bliss. The flavors of the meat, the garlic, and various spices molded together into what could only be described as heaven.  It was so scrumptious I took another bite, another bite, and another bite. I couldn't stop.

When I had finished eating my incredibly delicious meal my head began to ache. It felt as if large rocks were relentlessly thrown at my head. My vision blurred and the room spun. I looked at Jack, as a silent plea for help, but he was just staring at me emotionlessly with a murderous smirk. His brown eyes turned a devious blood red. As I faded out of consciousness I couldn't help but wonder, what the hell did I get myself into?
