The Argument

Phoebe and Melaina were sisters but totally different. Phoebe was the older, maturer and more responsible one. She was a straight A student, a member of many clubs and earned a graduate degree from Columbia. She had a good paying job and just purchased a new townhouse.

Melaina, on the other hand, was the wild child. She was the younger sister who cut class in high school but still managed to graduate. She took college courses but never finished, and she was always looking for a job. She ran with the wrong crowd and never lived in a place long enough for Phoebe to remember the address.

But it wasn't always like this. Phoebe and Melaina were once close, almost like twins. That was until their mother died when Phoebe was twelve and Melaina was ten. They went to live with their father afterwards, who was quite fond of vodka. Their paternal grandparents looked after them when their father was being less than a stellar parent. As they grew older, the two sisters began to separate and go in different directions. It was now at the point that Melaina only called Phoebe when she was in trouble, like tonight.

"Melaina, you got to stop this," Phoebe said to her sister as she was driving down the roadway. "I can't keep bailing you out every time you do something stupid."

"I didn't do anything wrong. The cop overreacted," Melaina said. "Have you not been watching the news ?"

"Melaina you crashed your car into three parked vehicles. I can smell the vodka off you right now."

"I'm not drunk" Melaina countered. "I'm fully aware of my surroundings."

"Whatever, but you really need to get help."

"I don't need help. I'm fine," Melaina shouted.

"How can you say that? This is your second D.U.I. The judge is not going to be lenient with you this time."

"Not if I get that hot shot lawyer again," Melaina countered as she winked her eye at Phoebe.

Phoebe shook her head. "I'm not paying for that man again."

Melaina huffed. "You don't have to. He owes me a favor."

"What kind of favor?"

"A favor." Melaina looked out the window and stared into the darkness.

Phoebe huffed. "Well, don't tell me. I don't want to know."

"Why do you think so low of me?" Melaina asked.

"How else should I think? You're always in trouble. When we were younger, grandma and grandpa always came to your rescue. Now I'm the one who bails you out."

"You didn't have to you know. If it bothers you that much, why didn't you just leave me there?"

That was a good question Phoebe thought to herself. Why did she come to her sister's rescue every time she did something dumb or illegal. The truth was that Phoebe loved her sister. They were so close until their mother died and everything went sideways. Phoebe couldn't understand why she came out fine and Melaina did not. It hurt her to think Melaina was ruining her life.

Phoebe broke the silence, "Look, Melaina, all I'm saying is that you need to think before you act. You were raised better than this. Mom would be turning in her grave if she knew."

"Don't bring mom into this. It has nothing to do with me", Melaina interjected.

"Yes it does. As soon as you accept that, the better your life would be."

"Look, stop trying to tell me how to live my life" Melaina shouted. "You know, I wish I didn't even call you. If I knew I was going to get a lecture tonight, I would have stayed in jail."

"Well next time I'll leave you there" Phoebe shouted. Phoebe turned her eyes from the road. "Maybe some time in a jail cell will set you..."

"Look out!" Melaina shouted. Phoebe turned her eyes back to the road and saw something standing in the middle of the lane. She swerved the car right. The car crashed through the guardrail and went down a hill. Melaina and Phoebe both screamed as the car crashed into a tree. Then all went silent.

Phoebe woke up nauseous with a pounding headache. As she looked around, she remembered arguing with Melaina before swerving off the road. She reached over to check on Melaina. She turned and saw that Melaina was gone and the passenger door was wide open.

"Melaina" Phoebe called out. With all her might, Phoebe pressed her door open. As she was stepped out, a wave of nausea hit Phoebe. She doubled over and vomited her dinner. After a few minutes, Phoebe gathered up enough strength to walk to the other side of the car. She looked for signs of where Melaina may have went. Phoebe wondered if someone pulled Melaina out the car. But if they did, why did they leave her behind? Phoebe knew she should get help, but she wanted to find Melaina first. Besides, her cellphone was somewhere in the car, or at least she hoped.

Phoebe heard a rustling noise from the woods. Phoebe turned and looked towards the trees, but saw only pitch blackness. She then saw something white on the ground a few feet away. Phoebe walked towards it and picked it. It was a t-shirt that looked very similar to the one Melaina was wearing.

"Melaina!" she called out again. Not knowing what compelled her, Phoebe walked into the woods. She wasn't sure why she was doing this. She began recalling all the horror movies she had seen with characters doing dumb stuff and getting killed. "Just like you're doing now" Phoebe said to herself. "But I have to find Melaina."

Phoebe was not sure how far she walked into the woods when she heard snapping trees branches. Phoebe jumped and turned toward the sound, but saw only darkness. When she was about to turn back, something caught her attention. She saw an object lying beside a tree. Phoebe slowly walked towards it. When she got closer, she made the object out to be a leg. Phoebe picked up her pace calling out her sister's name.

When she reached the tree, her steps and heart stopped. Her sister was lying on the grass. A gray haired wolf had its mouth pressed against Melaina's neck. The wolf looked up at Phoebe, blood dripping from its mouth. Suddenly the wolf turned and ran away into the woods.

When Phoebe gathered up her wits she lunged forward, wrapping her arms around her sister. Cradling her sister's head Phoebe shouted, "Melaina! Melaina! Please wake up." Melaina made no response. Phoebe tried to lift Melaina's body in an attempt to carry her out the woods, when she heard a growling sound behind her.

Phoebe froze. She turned and saw not one but three wolves. The one in the middle had black fur. The one of the left had brown fur and the other had reddish brown fur. They looked straight into Phoebe's eyes. Phoebe was not sure if she should stand her ground or run. Before she could make her decision, the black wolf lunged forward. Phoebe screamed and fell backwards as the wolf pounced on her. She felt the wolf's fangs puncture her neck and everything went black again.

Phoebe and Melaina's bodies laid side by side on the ground with deep puncture wounds on their necks. Two men stood above their bodies. One was shaking his head.

"I told them to be more careful out here in these woods. We're so close to humans" the first man said. He turned to other. "Now what are we supposed to do with these two? They're not even dead."

"No," the second man said. "They are turning as we speak."

The first man cursed. "Two female wolves in a pack is asking for trouble."

A moan escaped from Melaina's mouth. The men stilled until Melaina fell silent.

"Well this happens when you don't have a tight rein on your pack, Nathaniel." The second man looked down at the two sisters. "We need to get them to shelter. It's going be a long three days."

Nathaniel again cursed beneath his breath. He picked up Melaina in his arms while the other man picked up Phoebe.

Nathaniel then added, "This is going to be a lot to clean up after. Not to mention that car."

"Don't worry, I'll take care of everything." the second man replied. "But right now we need to look after these two while they go through the change. And we also need to have a stern talk with your wolves. This can't happen again."

Nathaniel nodded. "Agreed."

The two men carried the bodies of Phoebe and Melaina back to the truck. Their bodies were placed side by side on the truck's bed. When Phoebe's hand fell into of Melaina's, their hands instantly interlocked. The two sister were together again.
