TWENTYSIX
It had been made very clear that over time you start to lose all of the human memories that you have accumulated over your human life. Hoseok did say that there are some things that we remember, or that rolls over into your life of darkness. For example, Taehyung's taste for strawberries, Yoongi's piano skills, Jimin's dancing, and even his own love for reading. That's why deep down I knew a part of my human-self remained, because I loved thunderstorms.
Loved them.
They were calming.
The sound of the rain hitting hard on the ground was almost a lullaby. The rumbles and cracks of the thunder didn't scare me, they intrigued me. The flashes of the lightning were alluring and I loved to watch them.
There had not been very many storms recently and I didn't realize I was craving one until one hit.
Sitting in the living room with Taehyung we were watching a documentary when we heard Jungkook and Namjoon come in through the door of the attached garage. I turned around to see them soaked from head to toe, and Namjoon wearing an annoyed expression.
"What happened to you guys?" Taehyung asked.
"Caught in the storm." Jungkook replied as he started to strip from his clothes. "Fuck, I hate rain."
"I love rain." I smiled. "I find it calming."
"Even when you get stuck in it?" Namjoon asked.
"Yeah." I replied. "I love thunderstorms. I think they are relaxing."
"Well then you're in for a surprised because we are about to get a long one." He replied. "Turn on the weather channel, will ya?"
As they stripped from their wet clothes, I turned the channel like he asked. Sure enough, the reporting was right as Namjoon had explained. There was a series of heavy storms that were going to be coming our way for the next 48 hours.
Taehyung got up from his seat and took the wet clothes from them offering to throw them in the washing machine. I grabbed them a hand towel from the downstairs bathroom and they wiped off their faces and hair before stepping further into the house.
"Thanks." Jungkook said. "Let's go curl up in bed with Jin." Jungkook smiled to Namjoon, taking his hand.
"You go up ahead, I'll be there soon."
He nodded and headed up to their room before I turned to Namjoon. "What's up?" I asked.
He leaned against the counter looking behind me as if making sure no one was around. "I just wanted to tell you that since you have been here, things have been much more peaceful with Taehyung. I know there is still some tension with the two of you and Jin. But Taehyung doesn't seem to be as hatful towards me, and his friendship with Jungkook has strengthened. I know it's because of you, so thank you for staying with him. With us."
I know how unusual it is for Namjoon to vocalize these things. And though it was in my nature to tease him, I held back. I nodded and offered a hug which he took warmly. When we parted, Taehyung had returned to the kitchen,
"Hyung, your clothes are being cleaned." Then he looked at his state of nakedness, aside from his boxers, and chuckled. "Are you not freezing?"
"Yeah." He replied, giving him a nod. "I'm gunna go. Thanks guys."
"What a weirdo." I teased to Taehyung who laughed.
"So, thunderstorms huh?" he asked me, wrapping his arms around my lower back and pulling me into him.
"I love them." I giggled. "Why?"
"Just interesting is all. You want to go to our room and,.. you know..." He asked me kissing softly against my neck.
"Hmmm, during a thunderstorm? Yes please."
He picked me up by my thighs kissing on my neck as he carried me to our bedroom. In reality there was no way for us to hear the storm, the house was underground and built to be sound proof.
Once we both got our fill of each other, we promptly fell asleep in each other's arms. It was only a few hours later that I had woken up with a jerk, Taehyung still deep in sleep.
I took my phone and saw it was three am, and according to the weather app I had, it was still storming and would be for a few hours. I thought this would be the perfect time for me to go enjoy it. As carefully as I could manage, I slipped from the bed to not wake up Taehyung, and pulled some clothes from my closet. Once I was dressed, I crept out of the bedroom, shutting the door softly behind me.
Hoseok had build this house specifically to help them live as creatures of the night without the risk of getting injured. So, the only way out of the house was through the attached underground garage. There was a small upward winding staircase that you could also take if you wanted to go for a walk, so I took that route outside. Once the door was shut, I made sure to enter my key code so that it would seal and lock. Just like Namjoon had described and the weather man predicted, the storm was heavy. As a human, I wouldn't have been able to stand outside like I was. But with my heightened senses and inhuman strength, I was able to keep grounded and watch the rain fall and the storm rage on.
I shimmied my way across the siding of the house, which was the attic space. I sat in a small puddle of water, and there was a small ledge over my head so the rain though pouring, just missed my body.
And I just watched.
The wind was strong and the trees were bending and swaying with it. The rain was also manipulated by the wind as it would fall up and down, and side to side.
But the best part... the best part was the feeling of calmness washing over me. The rumbles of the rolling thunder were accents to their calmness and each crack of lightning was bright and highlighted the natural environment that surrounded us.
More so what I liked so much about the storms, is that they really cleared your mind. I was sitting there watching as the trees move, and watched as different pieces of nature moved within the winds and rain. I didn't think about anything else but the chaos of the storm. It was so dark out you couldn't even see the clouds. But I didn't care. I was at peace and enjoying my time watching the storm.
Again, time is nothing to a creature of the night. So, as I sat there at peace, watching the wind move the trees, time slipped by me. It wasn't until a particularly loud crack of thunder, and bright flash of light stirred me from my trance.
As I looked around me, I realized I was sitting in an even bigger puddle and my clothes were soaked. I laughed at myself. I would have died from pneumonia if my human self ever did this. All I am right now is a little cold. I felt a shiver run through my body, and disappointed, I decided it was time to go inside. I had no idea what time it was, as I left my phone in our bedroom.
I got up and stretched, leaning my head back as the rain came down even harder. Running my fingers through my wet hair I was trying to decide what to do for the day. I wasn't really tired since I had a nap with Taehyung, but perhaps I can convince him to play a game with me.
Not a video game. I scoffed to myself as I slowly walked to the opening of the garage. I laughed, knowing that Taehyung would do whatever game I wanted. He was sweet like that. Maybe I can convince him of a board game.
Hoseok has ordered a plethora of games when he realized I enjoyed them. He would play with me every once in a while. But he would play each game with me at least once.
Maybe once he's home with Jimin and Yoongi I can get them to play Dead Of Winter.
As my thoughts got away from me, I was in front of the key pad to open the garage door, but the light was not on. I pushed the button but nothing turned on at all.
When I looked up toward the garage door I noticed that the lights going across the top were off as well. They were always on. Mindlessly I tried to enter the code, four times, then a fifth. But nothing.
The power was out.
The fucking power was out.
But didn't Hoseok say the house and generators? I could have sworn he mentioned them.
Wracking my brain trying to figure out where they were I ran around the house. Searching for the backup generators so I could turn them on and get in the house. I had no idea what time it was. Even if the sun had officially risen, I wouldn't have known. The light couldn't not hit me.
I rounded the house again, fear deep in my soul. There was nothing outside. Which means that the backup generators where somewhere inside of the house.
I sat there for who knows how long more, waiting for the power to come back on. As the storm went on, it slowed and the brightness of the sun was peaking through the clouds.
In a panic I stood to my feet checking again if my code would work, but the pin pad was still not on. I walked over to the garages, banging on them and shouting for help.
But it was for none.
The house was sound proof. And I was about to die.
