19: Jacob
Katya was no longer feeling like her usual self anymore. She could barely sleep. Her nights were spent tossing and turning and waking up from a terrifying nightmare in fear. They consisted of her running through her childhood home in search of her sisters. With each step a shadowy creature would climb out of the cracks in the walls and ceilings and chase after her in search of their next meal. At the end of each nightmare she would find Elsa floating in the air in front of the old wooden wardrobe. She would scream and fly into Katya taking over her body. Most nights she woke up paralysed and covered in sweat. Jacob played the hero by comforting her and getting her a glass of water before cuddling her back to sleep. Katya knew what his real intentions were.
Her mind had changed too. She was starting to think differently. Her feelings towards Jacob had changed and something in her head was telling her to get her revenge on him. It was as if Elsa was there urging her to hurt him. At first she ignored it but the voice was getting stronger. She was worried that she wouldn't be able to control it anymore.
She missed working at the school. The children were a nice distraction from her life at home. She was hoping to return soon after the baby was born. Being stuck at home bored her. One sunny Saturday afternoon she decided to ask Jacob if he could take her out on the boat. Ida was out food shopping and Jacob was at home relaxing watching TV. Katya wanted to get outside and feel the wind in her hair. Jacob had fixed the boat a couple of weeks ago when he had a few days off of work so it should be good to go. He was raring to go out and use it so Katya thought today would be a good day because the weather was beautiful. The sun shone brightly in the bright blue sky and it was warm. Katya wore a tshirt and jeans when yesterday it was so cold she wore a faux fur coat.
She sat herself down on the sofa beside him. "Hey do you think we could go for a boat ride today?"
Jacob looked away from the TV.
"Yeah definitely! Let me go and get it ready." He said excitedly before getting up and going outside.
Katya had an idea and she was going to go through with it.
She waited about fifteen minutes and grabbed a hammer from the kitchen and then wobbled outside. Her bump was so large now it looked as if she was going to give birth any second. She tucked the hammer away in the top of her jeans at the back.
Jacob was inside the boat house starting the engine. He looked up at Katya. "All aboard!"
She couldn't help but laugh as he slowly helped her in the boat. It was quite small but sturdy. He guided the boat out of the the wooden house and set off across the sea.
Katya thought it was a wonderful experience. The water rippled in the sun light and a gentle warm sea breeze swept her hair. She wished that she could enjoy it instead of being on edge. The right moment had to come.
"Isn't it lovely baby? I'm so glad we moved out here." Jacob said as he gazed out at the sea. The sun's rays glittered across the water.
"It is." Katya managed to say. Thoughts whizzed through her mind and she couldn't believe what Jacob had done to her. How could he do such a thing? She couldn't hold it in any longer.
"Why have you been pretending to be in love with me Jacob?" She blurted out.
He looked at her shocked. "What are you talking about?"
"You know what I'm talking about. I know about you and Sara. Your little affair." She was starting to get angry.
He didn't say anything. His face had turned red and he looked as guilty as he was. "I'm sorry Katya."
"Sorry? You're sorry?!" She retorted. "How can you do this to me when I'm pregnant and we're engaged to get married next year?"
Silence.
"You've made a huge mistake." Her blood began to boil and she could feel her heart racing in her chest.
"I know I shouldn't have done it but I wanted both of you. Work was getting on top of me with this new job and it's made me think a few things. I can't be with you for the rest of my life. I need another woman to satisfy me."
The words made her skin crawl. She wanted to hit him. To make him pay for what he'd done to her but she couldn't bring herself to do such a thing.
But then Elsa appeared. She sat behind Jacob grinning. Surely there wasn't enough room for one more? She stared into Katya's eyes and her mouth opened.
"Do it sister." The words were a mere whisper in her ears.
Elsa was right she should do it. But how could she? The man in front of her was the love of her life. The man she was willing to dedicate her whole life to. The man who through everything had stuck by her and supported her. But was he really that man anymore?
Katya couldn't decide what to do. Jacob had his hands over his face as if trying to hide away from the backlash.
The next few moments went by in a blur. Elsa floated through Jacobs body and entered Katya's. Katya was no longer Katya. Elsa wriggled her way inside and made herself at home in Katya's body. It felt as if she was being ripped apart from the inside out. Katya's mind shut down.
Elsa was in control and she got out the hammer that was hidden away in the top of Katya's jeans. She raised it high above her head as Jacob stared in horror.
She brought the hammer down on Jacobs head with force. He tried to dodge out of the way and push Katya but failed. The head of the hammer struck his head again and again. His skull crunched from the impact as blood and brain matter splattered against the wooden planks. Elsa giggled to herself in a sinister manner as she continued to smash his head. The hammer had gone through Jacobs skull and into his brain. He was dead.
Elsa slipped out of Katya and gave her body back. Katya opened her eyes as she returned to life. She screamed in fear when she saw Jacobs mutilated head hanging off the boat. The food she had eaten earlier that day came up in her throat and as she vomited. She wailed through tears as she realised what Elsa had just done. Tufts of Jacobs hair and scalp were scattered across the bottom of the boat attached to congealed blood.
Her little sister had just murdered her fiance. Elsa stood in front of her and smiled.
"I did it for you sis. He hurt you and I had to help. I'm sorry about the mess. I'll take you back to shore." The ghost of her sister managed to turn the boat around and took her back to the beach.
Katya had frozen. She couldn't move or talk or even think. The strong smell of copper and sick hung thick in the air around her.
When the boat stopped against the hard pebbles on the beach Katya heard a scream behind her. It was Ida.
