18: Life Goes On
Katya couldn't comprehend what she had just heard. Ida looked at her and squeezed her hand for comfort.
"Will my baby be okay?"
"I'm sure it will be. We haven't found anything wrong with it apart from the speed in that it's growing. You are free to leave now Katya. We will send the results to you in the post when they come through." The doctor gave her a reassuring smile and left the room.
Ida got up. "I called Jacob. He should be outside so I'm going to go and get him alright?" She kissed Katya on the forehead and left.
Katya was alone with just her thoughts to keep her company now. The walls began to cracking and dozens of small black shadows crept out of the cracks. They grew in size until they were so big that they formed into one. What was happening to her? She felt incredibly troubled. Nothing was going right for her at the moment. First the ghost of her little sister came back to haunt her. Then she has reasons to believe that her fiance is cheating on her. The one person in her life who she is completely in love with and who she thought she could trust. And now the unborn baby inside of her might he turning into a monster.
She was pulled away from her thoughts when Jacob charged into the room followed by Ida. She looked concerned. The shadows had gone.
"Baby! Are you okay?" Jacob sat down on the chair beside the bed and looked worried. Katya wasn't entirely sure he was being genuine.
"Yes I am." She replied curtly.
"What the hell were you two doing out in the woods at eleven at night? Don't tell me you went to that dumb house again." He looked irritated.
"We did. I won't go back again." She admitted.
"Good. The doctor told me you can go home now so let's get you into the car." He helped Katya out of bed.
They left the hospital and made they way over to Ida's car. Ida had walked off ahead and was getting into the drivers seat when Katya asked Jacob "How did you get here?"
"Sara brought me."
"I see." She mumbled.
The journey back home was awkward and silent. It was freezing cold as it was almost one in the morning and temperatures had dropped. Katya began to shiver. She couldn't wait to get into her warm and cosy bed. Even if the man that would be sleeping beside her would be cold and distant.
When they got inside Ida made Katya a hot chocolate. She sat on the sofa beside her and handed it to her. Jacob had gone up to bed so it was just the two of them. Katya relished the heat coming from the hot drink as it warmed up her cold hands.
"Kat I've got something to tell you." Ida said solemnly.
Katya blew on the drink before taking a sip. "What is it?"
Ida sighed. "When Sara dropped Jacob off at the hospital I saw him kissing her. It wasn't just a quick peck either. It was long and slow. I didn't want to tell you at the hospital because I didn't want you to be upset in front of him. Please don't be mad at me."
Somehow Katya knew was prepared for something like this to happen. It was as if she was expecting it so she didn't explode. She was too tired to react like that anyway.
"Okay. Thank you for telling me Ida. I'm going to sleep down here tonight." She pulled a blanket from the back of the sofa over her and settled down. Ida said goodnight and left her alone. She finished her drink and closed her eyes and thought about what she was going to do about Jacob. She began to weep silently as it suddenly hit her. The love of her life was cheating on her when he was soon to be her husband. How could he do such a thing? A childs voice at the back of her mind said 'He will regret it.'
***
The next week Katya rang work and explained that she would have to take maternity leave for a while. Her boss was slightly irritated at the news because he didn't think that she was that heavily pregnant and rudely told her she would have to return back to work as soon as possible as she hadn't been employed there for that long. The pregnancy seemed to be going by at an alarming rate which no one had prepared her for. The results came back fine and apparently nothing was wrong with her or the baby. Her belly had doubled in size and looked strange against her small frame. She didn't like to look at herself in the mirror anymore.
Over the past few days she had barely spoken to Jacob. They hadn't made love in over three weeks and he came home work late from work almost every night. She wasn't sure what she was going to do about the situation. Ida was still staying with them and had another week left but said she may stay a little longer if the baby came early so she could help to look after it because she had a feeling Jacob would be useless.
Katya's mental health began to deteriorate. She had suffered from anxiety at a young age but hadn't needed to visit a psychiatrist for years. With every day that passed her skin would turn more yellow and her hair more brittle. Ida was worried about her but she insisted that she was fine. Katya hadn't returned back to their old abandoned childhood home since the night she fell over. She wondered where Elsa had gone because she hadn't had any signs from her but where ever she went a black shadow would follow in her wake.
