12: Elsa

When Katya stepped into the house it felt chillingly cold. She still had no control over her body but she could smell something like a wet dog. The house was pitch black apart from a candle the little girl was holding. She no longer held the music box.

Katya was frightened. It felt like the darkness was closing in around her and she was slowly drowning in it. She tried her hardest to move and escape but she couldn't.

The little girl came closer to her. She smelt of rotting flesh. Another candle appeared in her right hand and she passed it to Katya. Her own hand moved and took the candle. She was glad to have some more light but when she saw what was around her she wished she hadn't.

Dark demonic like creatures crawled up and down the walls. They were different shapes and sizes but all of them had glowing red eyes and which seemed to bore into her soul. Every few seconds one would let out a deep howl as if it was in pain.

The little girl giggled and floated up the staircase in front of her. Katya distinctly followed. With each step she took more fear built up inside of her. She wanted desperately to leave.

"We're going to have some fun!" The little girl cried out excitedly.

What kind of fun? Katya thought to herself in despair. The girl guided her along the corridor until they reached the end. Katya could feel the presence of something following closely behind her and was thankful she couldn't turn her head to look.

All of the other doors were closed apart from the one she was being lead into. The curtains were drawn but a few candles lit up the room. It was the same one that she had been in before with the wooden wardrobe but this time it had random toys scattered around the floor.

The door slammed shut behind her and she felt a warm feeling wash over her. Her body was back in her control again. The girl sat down in the centre of the toys and crossed her legs. She looked up at Katya like a puppy would look at its owner when begging for food.

"Sit." She commanded.

Katya did as she said. She sat a few inches away from her and looked at the toys. She recognised them immediately. They were from her childhood and she'd played with them many times. She was confused and sad. How did they get in here?

The girl picked up a barbie doll and sat her down in a small black limousine. She then handed Katya another barbie doll. Katya didn't know what to do. She just sat there bleakly.

"Don't you want to play?" The girl looked at her sadly.

Katya wasn't sure what to say. She didn't want to upset the girl but she wasn't in the mood to play with dolls let alone her own dolls that she hadn't seen in over ten years.

She cleared her throat. "Are you Elsa?" She asked quietly.

The girl carried on playing with the car and pushed it around in circles. "Yes I am."

Katya felt her chest tighten. "How are you alive?" She managed to say.

"I'm not. I'm dead." The girl turned her head around to face her and lifted off the veil that covered her face.

Katya stared at her in awe. It was her sister Elsa. She couldn't remember the last time that she'd seen her. She began to tremble. Elsa looked exactly as she did as a child apart from her skin which was a ghostly white.

"How is this happening Elsa?"

Elsa continued playing with her dolls. "You're not going to like what I'm going to say." She spoke softly.

Katya listened intently.

"I'm here because this is the first house that you lived in when you were a child. You can't remember because you blocked out the memories of your time here. It was when daddy began to abuse you. You didn't realise what he was doing but somehow you knew it was wrong. When you grew up and moved house he still continued to hurt you but the reason you can remember those memories are because you had grown accustomed to his actions. You understood it as a regular occurrence that you couldn't do anything about. Another reason you blocked out the memories from living here is because of the dreadful event that happened." She stopped and looked sullen.

Taking a deep breath she continued. "Daddy hurt me too. He hurt both of us but not Ida. He thought of her as his golden child who did nothing wrong. Because you and me were the youngest children he thought we were the most useless. Only good for one thing and that was to hurt us both repeatedly until he broke us. But daddy did more to me. He locked me in the cellar here for hours on end when mummy was at work or with you or Ida. One day he argued with mummy so badly he took it out on me. We were supposed to go on a boat trip to one of the islands across the sea but he got angry with me. He killed me in the boat house. He pushed me over in rage and I smacked my head on a toolkit that was beside the boat. I began to bleed out and daddy didn't know what to do. He knew he'd taken it too far so he shoved me into the water and drowned me."

Katya couldn't comprehend what she was hearing. Tears began to pour down her cheeks. This poor tortured soul that was once her sister had gone through much more hurt than she ever had.
