Chapter 6 // Bouquets
Adelaide's Point of View
I've always been terrible at crafts.
In the first grade, we had to make one of those turkey hand drawings, where all you needed to do was trace the outline of your hand onto a piece of construction paper, and I somehow messed that up. When I brought it home, my parents didn't even fathom the idea of pretending it was beautiful, instead they chuckled at it so much that tears were rolling down their cheeks. I couldn't deny that it was revolting, so I joined them in poking fun at my artwork.
But yet here I am in the back room, struggling to create a flawless bouqet like Lucy had just set the precedent for. For basic bouqets it was simple, just four of the same flower and two of another kind to spice it up. The flowers had to be trimmed to the exact same length of their stems, no exceptions, and then sprayed with heavy duty water. Clinging the layers of plastic film and ribbon around them was the most challenging part, besides making custom orders. The custom orders you had to find each flower, which was quite a task when I had no idea what any of them were called, and then proceed with making the bouquet based on the client's requirements. It was tedious, and I was having trouble.
"Addy that one looks much better!" Lucy exclaimed, patting my back in praise. My fingers were already sore after only making five, whereas Lucy had met twenty three in the same amount of time. "Don't fret, it's only your first day of this. You'll be a pro in no time."
I giggled, holding up my bouquet in the light to observe how incredibly ugly it looked. "I don't know about that, Luce."
"If it makes you feel any better," She whispered, leaning in closer to me. "Yours are better than Michael's."
A hearty laugh escaped my lips as the boy with brightly colored hair furred his eyebrows together in confusion. He was sitting directly across from us, an apple in his hand, and convinced his mother to let him supervise us, which basically translated to sitting on his butt for an hour.
"So how are you liking it here?" Lucy pondered, ripping the correct amount of velvety purple ribbon to tie around the base of the bouqet.
I shrugged. "It's pretty nice. I'm still getting settled. Painting my room definitely made me feel more at ease though. I went grocery shopping for the first time yesterday and I really like the supermarket. Plus, I'm surprisingly liking this job more than I expected, but maybe that's because of you guys."
"Aww you're too cute," Michael cooed. "I saw you at the grocery store yesterday actually. You were leaving though so I didn't have time to say hello. Were you with Mali-Koa Hood?"
"Yes," I answered as I continued to follow Lucy's examples. "She is my neighbor as well and I don't have a car, so she offered to drive me."
"Well she is harmless," Lucy spoke up from next to me. "One of the nicest girls I've ever met. I don't know what happened for Calum to turn out the way he did. How do your children go from a future peace keeper to a monster?"
I chewed on my gloss covered lips. The topic of Calum always made me weary. They didn't seem to know him the way I did. "I still don't think you should be hanging out with either of them," Michael stated. "Mali is much better than Calum, yes, but I'm just worried for you. You haven't hungout with Calum in the past few days, right?"
"No," I lied, not making eye contact with Mikey to try and keep my bluff alive. I have hungout with Calum quite often, but I was not in the mood for one of his ignorant lectures today.
"That's my girl," He said proudly, getting up from his seat to wrap his arms around me. I laughed into his chest as he spun me around for a second, before placing me back down on my feet. "You'll call me if you need anything, right?"
I grinned, leaning up to kiss him on the cheek. "Of course, Mikey."
Lucy coughed, breaking the two of us from the embrace we shared. I returned my attention back to the bouqets. I liked Michael a lot. He had a lovely sense of witty humor and always kept Lucy and I occupied in the shop with some sort of conversation, no matter how stupid it was.
"Hey, if you guys want to come over today you are more than welcome to," I invited, thinking about how nice it would be to have company other than Calum.
"I would love to," Lucy said with enthusiasm. "But unfortunately, I already have plans with my family. I'll be there next time though. We should make it like a thing. The three of us."
"Now there's an excellent idea," Michael replied, pointing at Lucy with his apple. The three of us beamed at each other, realizing this would be the start of a beautiful friendship. "I'll be there, Adelaide."
The rest of our shift felt like it was flying by. My bouquet skills had vastly improved and we shared endless funny stories from our past. I adored the open environment here in Fabulous Florist. It felt, and smelled, like home. The fresh aroma also happened to be my favorite part.
Michael gripped his car keys out of his pocket as we swiped our cards, clocking out of work. It was nice to not have to walk home today, although I did enjoy a bit of exercise. Running was not exactly my forté, but walking around in this serene town was less of a chore and more of an exploration.
I slipped into the passenger seat as he twisted the key into the ignition, driving off towards my house. I almost opened my mouth to give him directions, but then the realization occured that he was aware of where I lived. Sometimes it was excrusciating that everyone here new everyone's busy. There was an obsession with gossip. Other times, I found the community charming.
Coming inside the empty home, I was hit with relief. I loved being home. This might not have been the home I was accustomed to, but this thrill of being completely independent had already sparked my interests. Mikey was kicking off his shoes next to the doorway. I leaned against the hallway, smiling at my friend. "Hey, would you like to see how the paint turned out?"
"Of course," He cheered as I grasped his hand and tugged him up the staircase, our feet creating a pitter patter sound as we darted towards my vacant bedroom. I had yet to put the furniture back in there, mainly because I was too weak to move them on my own.
Michael grinned as I opened the door, revealing the black chalkboard walls in front of him. His eyes were twinkling. "It looks amazing, Addy. Why didn't you write anything yet?"
I shrugged. "See that's my problem. I have an imagination of a peanut. What would I possibly draw on there?"
"A penis?" Michael suggested, making the two of us burst into childish giggles. He picked up a piece of chalk out of the box and carefully wrote his name in his handwriting. It was messy but original.
I snatched the chalk from his hands, too lazy to get my own, and underneath his name wrote "is a loser."
He laughed loudly, slinging one arm around my shoulder. "Very mature of you, Adelaide."
I wiggled free of his grasp. "Don't call me that," I commanded. I was just messing around with him, however, I wasn't fond of the way that he said my full name. It was much too formal.
"Okay. I'll just call you a loser then," Mikey mocked, nudging me with his elbow.
"If you paid attention you would realize that I had already called you that. Maybe you should focus more there, buddy."
He cracked up at my sarcasm, although it wasn't even that humorous. He just seemed to like my bubbly attitude. Michael opened his mouth to speak, but the knocking on my front door interrupted our drawing fest on my wall. "Who's that?"
"I don't know. I'll be right back," I muttered, slipping out of my bedroom and heading downstairs. When I opened the door I saw Calum, beaming at me. He had one of those dumb snapback hats covering the portion of his dark brown hair. My heart pounded at the sight of him. If Michael knew he was here I'm not sure what would happen. "Hey. Um, I'm a little busy right now, can you come back later?"
"Busy?" He repeated, raising his eyebrows at me as he stepped inside, making my nerves continue to rise. "What could a boring person like you be doing?"
"Cal-" I tried to shoo him away, but the creaking of my bedroom door stopped us. His eyes flickered to Michael then back to me. He seemed deflated.
"Is that-" Michael called, walking down the stairs. He was panting heavily. "Oh my God. It's him. Addy, I told you to stay away from him!"
I bit my lip, suddenly becoming even more worried than before. "I know. I, um, didn't listen."
His hands pushed me behind him, making me stumble a bit and fall against the wall. I was shaking in fear and I desperately attempted to regain composure and get in between them. "Don't shove her!" Calum shouted, leaping towards Mikey.
"Guys, stop," I pleaded, dashing up towards the boys.
Michael shook his head angrily. His lip was trembling as Calum glared directly into his eyes. He laughed bitterly. "Don't try to tell me you actually care about her well-being. You're just going to make her your next victim, Calum. And I'm not going to let you. You can't take advantage of a naive girl like Addy, she has no clue what the hell you've done."
Calum's fists clenched tightly together. My heart was racing. "Please," I begged weakly, hoping to catch their attention.
"You have no clue what you're talking about, Clifford. Why don't you mind your own business," He grunted, placing both hands on Mikey's chest and pushing him backwards.
Michael was fuming. His cheeks were flaming red and his mouth was quivering. Before I could even process what was happening, Michael threw a punch, his fist connecting with Calum's nose. Blood immediately rushed out of his nostrils as he fell to the floor, instantly groaning in pain.
I gasped loudly, tears now rolling down my face due to my anxiety from this situation. "Michael!" I screeched. "Get out of my house!"
His expression was pure shock, as if he was surprised I didn't praise him for causing such physical pain to my neighbor. "What? Addy, no. I'm not leaving you alone with this monster."
"I do not tolerate fighting in my house," I barked assertively, pressing against his body to guide him out the front door.
"Addy!" He protested. I slammed the door on his face and locked it, ignoring his banging against the metal.
I crouched down next to Calum who was whimpering softly, holding his blood ridden nose with both hands. My heart ached at the sight of him in such pain. I carefully lifted his hands off his nose to examine it, and man, was it messed up. "Oh my God, Cal," I whispered. "I'm going to get you cleaned up."
I raced into the kitchen and huddled together some supplies from paper towels, to ice packs, to disinfectant, and even a tampon. I was back at his side in seconds, spilling my make-do first aid kit over my hardwood floors. I wiped the blood clean with the disinfectant and towels, hearing him take in sharp breaths as it most likely stung. I took the ice pack and applied slight pressure to his nose that was already bruising. Using my free hand, I rubbed his arm carefully, trying my best to comfort him.
He moaned softly, reaching his hand up and gripping mine, intertwining our fingers together. Calum used his energy to sit up, leaning with his back against the wall in the hallway. He smiled sadly at me, continuing to ice his nose. "You didn't have to do this, Addy."
"Yes I did," I said stubbornly, scooching closer to him so I could sit on his lap. "It was my fault. I shouldn't have invited him over. I hate seeing you like this."
"Why was he in your room?"
I burst out laughing. He was just beaten to a pulp and all he could think about was my relationship status. "Is someone jealous?"
"No," Calum stated firmly.
My finger reached up to trace his cheekbone delicately. "I showed him my new wall color and then we started drawing on it. I have no interest in Michael. Especially after what he just did to you. But I have to say, I'm kind of surprised that he won. I thought you were tougher than that, Calum."
He chuckled. "I could take his scrawny butt anyday. I was just caught off guard," Calum explained, making me roll his eyes at his cocky behavior. "Addy? Do you mind if I stay here tonight? My mum will kill me if she finds out I got in a fight again."
"Yeah that's fine," I told him with complete honesty. "Just no hanky panky, mister."
"No promises there, babe," Calum uttered while cracking up. His eyes traveled down to the floor as he observed the wrapped tampon next to him. He shifted his position so he was holding the icepack with one hand and proceeded in picking up, studying the feminine product carefully. When he came to the realization of what the object was, we both laughed again, to the point where our stomachs were hurting. "You're the cutest thing, Ad."
