Chapter 46 // Aftermath

Adelaide's Point of View

"No."

Calum's hands dropped from my shoulders, and his face dropped as well. There was a look of disappointment and betrayal covering every inch of his face, and he took a few steps away from me to pace around the area in front of our bed. Both of his palms were pressed together as if he was praying and they were pressed against his lips.

"I'm sorry, Calum, I should have stopped him earlier. I thought he was just joking when he flirts with me. I didn't think he would actually do anything-"

"Did you kiss him back?" Calum asked, interrupting my rambling.

I hiccuped to try and stop myself from crying. I always seem to be crying. "No, of course not. But I'm still really sorry. I shouldn't have let him drink that much. No, I should have left when you left. This is all my fault, oh my God."

"Ad." Calum sighed heavily. "It's okay. Just, did you like it?"

I paused for a moment to think it over. Luke's lips might have been softer and his lip ring might have been thrilling, but there was no spark between us. He was just supposed to be my flirty best friend and that's all I ever viewed him as. Calum's kisses left me breathless and his touch was firery and just transmitted love.

Calum grimaced, his body visibly stiffening. "So you did, huh? That's fine, whatever, I'm just going to sleep on the couch tonight. Don't follow me."

"Calum!" I shrieked, gripping onto his arm tightly and digging my nails into the skin onto his bicep to stop him from moving any further towards the door. "I didn't like it at all, actually. I just wanted to think it over to make sure. I'm in love with you, Cal. And I only want you to kiss me."

He glimpsed down at me for the first time, with his teeth still clenched together, making his jawline protrude even further. "Promise?"

"I promise," I assured him. "I'm really sorry that I'm such a crappy girlfriend, this is all my fault, I should have stopped him."

"It's not your fault," Calum told me, wrapping his arms around me and pulling me into his chest. He rubbed my back in a circular motion while pressing a kiss onto the top of my head, trying to get me to stop sobbing. "Thank you for coming to me and telling me the truth."

"Of course," I mumbled against his body, snuggling my face closer to him. "Thank you for not dumping me again."

He chuckled, backing up from our embrace so he could properly press our lips together. "Alright, well, if you don't mind, I need to go beat the crap out of Luke."

"No, don't," I ordered quickly, letting out a small gasp as I clutched tighter onto his arm. "He was so drunk. He probably doesn't even remember what he did."

"Why are you defending him, Ad? He kissed you! I don't care if he was drunk or not. He got in between our relationship and I'm not okay with that. He's supposed to be my best friend, and best friends don't try to steal the best thing in my life away from me!" Calum screamed in frustration, returning back to pacing around the room like a madman.

"I know, I know, it was wrong for him to do that but he was hammered and wasn't thinking straight and that is my fault for not taking away his drink sooner," I tried to explain and calm him down. "Why don't we go to sleep and you can think things over and if you are still angry with him in the morning then you can do whatever you need to do. But I think this is all going to blow over. I don't think he would intentionally do this to you, and you know deep down that is true."

Calum sighed, letting his shoulders slump down as he became less tense. "Why do you always have to be right?"

I simply shrugged, sending him a small smile as I led him towards our bed. I quickly changed into some pajamas before crawling onto the mattress and scooting closer to Calum. His arms instantly enveloped around me as our legs tangled together underneath the sheets, with my back pressed against his stomach. He combed some of my hair out of the way so he had a clear path for his lips to plant intimate kisses along my neck.

"I just can't get over what happened. You're my baby. I don't want anyone to jeopardize that and I don't to ever lose you. Especially to someone who is living in our house," Calum whispered as he snuggled his head into the crook of my neck. "It's all going to be so awkward now. Luke has been my best friend for as long as I can remember, Ad. I don't want to hate him."

"Then don't," I told him nonchalantly, spinning around so I could get a clear view of his face. I reached out to touch his face, stroking his sharp cheekbone. "Just talk things out with him."

"I'm going to, but you don't even understand how badly I want to kick him in the balls just for checking you out. And now he kissed you. I just don't want to be mad at him but I'm so pissed, Ad, and it's driving me crazy," He muttered angrily, letting his head slump against the pillow.

I grimaced at the sight of him so distraught. I hated seeing Calum upset. It physically pained my heart to see anything other than that goofy grin plastered over his tan face. I touched his fluffy hair, letting my fingers get caught in between the little unruly waves. "It's not just his fault. I told you, I should have made more of an effort to stop him. And he was drunk. Maybe Luke won't even remember what happened. Either way, I am not worth throwing away a friendship that means the world to you. I won't let that happen."

Calum sent me a lazy smile. "But baby, you are my world."

The apples of my cheeks must have been burning bright red as a swarm of butterflies were now fluttering throughout my belly. I beamed up at him, trying my hardest not to have my heart melt into a puddle of cuteness. I was the luckiest girl to be able to call him mine, and I didn't want anyone to wreck that either, not even the confident, drunk, blondie with his bad-boy lip ring. "You are the sweetest, Cal. Maybe our first night together in our new house isn't so bad after all."

"No, it still sucks," He deadpanned, giggling quietly. Calum leaned forward to kiss me with every ounce of passion in his body. "I was just trying to be cute because I love you."

"I love you too," I replied, rolling my eyes at him as I tugged the blanket tighter to my body. "Goodnight, Butter."

He groaned while letting out a small chuckle as he scooped me up into his arms again, so I could feel his heartbeat pounding into my shoulder blades. "I like Sex-God better."

"You're an idiot. Go to sleep, babe," I whined, closing my eyes peacefully and hoping that whatever would happen tomorrow wouldn't ruin our new life in America for the four of us.

--

I woke up to yelling- not friendly, loud, rambunctious yelling. This was an argument. And I knew who this argument was between without even having to be in the room.

I scurried over towards the door and cracked it open while zipping a lightweight sweatshirt up my body. Sure enough, Calum was screaming at Luke in the kitchen. They both seemed equally flustered, with various hand gestures and movements being tossed around.

My stomach churned just from viewing them in the midst of a heated conversation. Luke has been by Calum's side during the incident, while he was in jail, he helped him out of his depression, he even made him come to America to be with me for God's sake. I didn't want Calum to forget about all of that just because of something so minuscule like a drunken touch of two lips. But I suppose if Margo or Lucy were constantly flirting with my boyfriend I would be very ticked off as well.

"Just because I think she's hot as hell doesn't mean I have feelings for her, Cal! I always say that crap just to tease you and I'm sorry, okay? I really am. I didn't know it bothered you. But you need to get over it. It was just a stupid kiss that didn't mean anything," Luke shouted in frustration.

Calum shoved Luke, not anything too hard, but enough to make him take a few steps back. "It wasn't just a kiss! You kissed Addy! She's mine!"

"Jesus, Calum, you don't own her! She's your girlfriend not your freaking property. And I understand very well that you two are in a serious relationship and I wouldn't try to break you two up. Do you honestly think I would do something like that to you, Cal? I was drunk and wasn't thinking straight," He spat in a sincere manner, then let out a loud huff before lowering his voice. "But your sober girlfriend didn't seem to mind."

I gasped, quickly covering my mouth and hoping neither of them heard me. Luke did not just say that. He definitely said that out of spite, but that wasn't going to stop Calum from declaring World War III.

Calum gripped tightly onto the collar of Luke's shirt in one quick motion, clenching his fist together and winding up. It was about to happen and I squinted, still contemplating whether or not I wanted to see the fist fight.

Luke scrunched his nose up in anticipation, his lips trembling with fear, and his blue eyes closed tightly. Calum's strong biceps and tattered knuckles could easily do some damage, and Luke obviously was fully aware of Calum's history with fighting. "Do it, Cal. I deserve it. Shit, I'm so sorry. Just punch me already," Luke called out, turning his face to one side to give Calum an easy target.

They stayed in this position for several moments, both of them frozen in place. I assumed it was because Calum was building his momentum for a big swing or something, but I was thoroughgly surprised when he slowly lowered his hand from the air, his fingers releasing themselves from being tightly curled up. "I can't punch you, Hemmings," Calum stated quietly, almost as if he was ashamed.

Luke relaxed, but Calum suddenly slammed his six-foot-four lanky body into our kitchen wall with such force that there would definitely be bruises covering his spine tomorrow. He yelped in pain as Calum got closer to him. "Don't you dare touch my girl ever again," Calum yelled, his tone laced with ice and intimidation that I had to admit was kind of hot.

"I won't, I promise," Luke blubbered.

Calum let go of the boy who was now aching, then turned away and headed towards our bedroom. He caught sight of me and frowned at my presence since I had witnessed the exchange. "Did you see all of that?"

"Most of it," I answered, hugging him when he had made his way over to me. I wasn't blind and I could clearly see he was upset, but I wasn't sure if it was because he was mad at Luke or because he was mad that they fought. "I'm proud of you for not punching him."

"I almost did, but I love him too much to do that, even when he annoys the crap out of me."

"You guys will get over this. I know you will," I said optimistically, even though I knew the two of them would cave and go right back to the way things were. "Do you, um, do you mind if I talk to him?"

Calum shrugged, ducking inside our bedroom. "Be my guest."

I stood up on my tippy-toes to leave a short peck on his lips before I hesitantly made a beeline for the kitchen. Luke had his hands on the edge of the sink and was staring out of the window like a statue, rarely even blinking because he must have been too consumed by his thoughts. "Hey," I greeted apprehensively. "You okay?"

Luke's eyes filled with worry at the sight of me. "No, I feel awful and I regret everything. I'm such a screw-up but I'm too much of an egotistical jerk to own up to it. And now my best friend probably hates me."

"He doesn't hate you. He would have knocked you out if he hated you," I informed him, attempting to lighten the mood but I failed miserably. "Just apologize to him again once he calms down."

Luke let out a deep exhale, pressing his fingers against his temple in order to relieve some of the tension that must have been filling his brain. "Okay," Luke agreed. "I'm sorry for kissing you, Addy. I don't know why I did that. I love you, but not in that way. You've always been just a friend to me even though my comments may make it seem otherwise. I guess I was just feeling lonely and pathetically single which is hard when you are living with the best couple ever and I was jealous of you two because I've never experienced being in love like that and something came over me and I kissed you and I'm really, really sorry."

"It's okay, Luke. I get it. It was my fault for not stopping you sooner and for letting you continue to drink. Don't beat yourself up too much."

"It's not okay!" Luke blurted out. "My best friend thinks I'm a backstabber and I didn't mean for any of this to happen. I didn't even mean to kiss you, I have no feelings for you whatsoever and I know you don't have any for me either. And now you're going to be so awkward around me and I won't be able to playfully tease you anymore without making you uncomfortable or without Calum murdering me and our friendship is going to completely change but I can't lose Cal, I just can't. He's basically my brother, Addy."

I felt so bad for the kid. My heart was practically breaking as I listened to him ramble on and on about all of his little worries. I opened my arms out wide, but he shook his head frantically and backed up away from me. "Calum told me not to touch you. I can't. He'll kill me."

"I can give you a hug, Luke. It's okay. I'm not going to let you start crying," I spoke softly, locking my arms around his waist. He hesistantly clutched onto me, returning the embrace. "Everything is going to be alright."

A pair of loud footsteps skipping down the staircase made the two of us break apart. A bright, smiling Ashton appeared at the entrance of the kitchen and his eyebrows slowly furred together in confusion. "Wait, what the hell is going on?"
