Chapter 42 // Carnival

Adelaide's Point of View

"Wake up sleepyheads," My mother called, knocking on my bedroom door and causing my eyes to widen. "You two better not have been making any babies last night. You're lucky I even let you sleep in the same bed."

"Mom!" I yelled, which only made Calum let out a slight laugh. He started to get up to oblige to my mother's request, but I tugged on his body and didn't let him leave.

Our legs were still tangled up together in an intricate web, and I snuggled my head against his bare chest. "Ad, we have to get up. Don't you want to go that carnival today?"

I whined, rolling over onto his body and shifting my position so I was sitting on him, my legs straddling each side of his figure. I was positive I had tremendous bedhead that was sticking out in every direction and Calum's lips looked extremely chapped, but that didn't stop me from swiftly cupping my hands around his chubby cheeks and kissing him.

When I slipped my tongue inside of his mouth he jerked away, scrunching his nose up as he giggled uncontrollably. "Baby, you have the worst morning breath ever."

I smiled, knowing that it was true and that my mind didn't even fret over the fact that I could have potentially embarrassed myself, but with Calum it didn't matter. I ran my fingers through his coarse hair. "Can we skip the carnival and just cuddle all day?"

"No, Ad. We didn't go on like any actual dates in Australia. At least let me make it up to you now that I can actually go in public without getting glared at," Calum protested. "Besides, we can cuddle whenever. Why are you so obsessed with cuddling lately?"

I shrugged nonchalantly, but I knew the reason why. I have missed him so much and just being able to feel his body pressed against mine reminded me that he was actually here with me. It filled me with butterflies every time we curled up together. I loved the simplicity and intimacy of cuddling, especially since our crotches lined up perfectly. We were a perfect match.

Calum groaned as he placed his hands underneath my thighs so he could stand up, and I wrapped my arms around his neck without putting up a fight. He headed towards the door to leave but I shrieked, stopping him from moving any further. "Wait, I don't have pants on."

I slid down to the floor and out of his grasp as I picked up a pair of denim high waisted shorts and hiked them up my legs, then proceeded in exchanging my large t-shirt for a blouse. Calum had put one of his muscle tanks on and he was leaning against my door on one shoulder with his arms crossed against his chest, smirking at me. "What?"

He shook his head, extending his hand out for me to intertwine my fingers with. "Nothing, I just don't understand how lucky I am to have such a beautiful girlfriend."

I felt my cheeks suddenly alter into a crimson shade, but I quickly composed myself. "I don't understand how I got stuck with such a cheesy boyfriend," I teased, sticking my tongue out at him.

"Hey, you love me," Calum protested, poking my hip with his free hand.

"You got that right," I mumbled, standing up on my tippy-toes to leave a sloppy kiss on his sharp cheekbones.

We dashed down the staircase and had a small conversation with my parents while scarfing down some waffles, before I brushed my teeth and then snatched my car keys off the counter and lead the two of us into the garage. It has been several months since I've actually driven a car because it had been stowed away in America. I had to admit I was a bit nervous to drive again, but I'm sure that I would loosen up as soon as we went off on our adventure.

My shaky fingers gripped the steering wheel tightly, clamping over the leather material so hard that no air could seep through my hand. I kept slamming the brakes to keep control over the vehicle, lunging Calum's body against his seat belt every time. I could tell he was frightened by the way his top teeth gritted against his bottom row of pearly whites. He cleared his throat. "Ad, are you sure you don't want me to drive?"

"I've got it, Cal," I assured him, switching the gears as we finally made it out of my driveway. "It's just been awhile. I know exactly where we're going so I should drive."

"Okay, just- just be careful," He ordered, shifting his gaze between the road and my face. I enjoyed how protective he was over me, and he continued to display it when his hand placed on my thigh with his thumb caressing small circles on the top of my leg. "Make sure you stop at the stop sign up there."

I giggled at the clearly obvious directions. "Cal, just relax. I feel like I'm taking my driver's test again."

"Did you ever pass the test?" Calum asked in a shocked manner, rolling his eyes at me.

I smacked him in the arm, practically snorting with laughter. "Calum! I'm not that bad."

"Okay baby, whatever you say," He sang happily, before jumping and gripping onto the steering wheel right next to where my hands were. "Jesus, Ad, you're not even paying attention. Can I please just drive? I really don't want you getting in an accident."

My heart clenched at the mention of the incident that had left such a tremendous mark on his life. I swallowed the lump in my throat, suddenly becoming more pressured to do a better job at driving. "We're almost there," I promised him, cautiously turning into the parking lot to the carnival.

Thousands of people were already attending and I could feel myself becoming slightly nervous. I had absolutely no idea who I would run into here, and I was afraid of what may occur. As a high school student my entire little clique that I paraded around with always met up at the fair and we spend the day pretending to be hoodrats. This would be the first time I came here on a date and I couldn't be happier that it was with Calum.

We both exited the car, hand in hand again, as we strolled towards the main entrance. The crowds were already forming underneath the large rides and lights that illuminated the designated the carnival site. Rows of vendors and shops lined the streets and my mouth watered at the view of so many different food in one place.

"Want to get some stereotypical American food?" I suggested, pointing towards the burger joint.

"I'm not that hungry yet. Can we just get some candy for now?" Calum bargained, his eyes twinkling at this giant sweet shop that was in the distance.

I merely nodded in reply, heading towards it. An array of bright colors blinded my vision due to the assortment of candies and their wrappers. We grabbed a bag from the front to place the bulk style candy inside of. Using the tin scoops as a little shovel, Calum put some taffy in his bag.

I picked up a tootsie roll and gestured towards it. "Aww, look Cal. It's like the size of your penis."

His jaw dropped immediately, stunned by my teasing. He placed his palms over my mouth to silence me from talking anymore, while cracking a small smirk. "I can't believe you just said that."

"Sorry, it's just payback for all of the bad driving insults," I explained, although I knew his remarks were probably true. While mine was completely false.

"Look they have cotton candy!" Calum nearly squealed, tugging me towards the machine in the corner. He watched the pink fluff continuously spin around in circles. "I've never had it before. It looks like giant cotton."

"Hence why it's called cotton candy," I said matter-of-factly, but he ignored me and just viewed the snack in awe. "Do you want to get some? If you don't like it I will eat it, but I'm sure you will."

"Okay," Calum agreed, ordering one and then paying for the other candies he had been planning to purchase as well. Once the worker handed over the white paper stick that was topped with the fluffy artificial cotton, he nervously broke off a little piece of it and lifted it to his mouth, then instantly smiled. "Where has this been all my life?"

"Alright Rihanna, where would you like to go first?" I wondered, leaning over as he stuck the cotton candy out for me to take a bite of.

He scoped out the general vicinity and motioned towards the roller-coaster that had been chained down towards the end of the park. It looked pretty fun from afar, but knowing my nervous habits I would still probably shriek when we went on it. "Please don't puke though, Ad. I don't want to kiss puke breath. Your morning breath is bad enough."

"You're lucky I even let a loser like you kiss me," I joked, loving the playful side the two of us were sporting today.

He knocked his hip against mine as we were strolling towards the roller-coaster. The thrill of being out in public date was already seeping through my body and we have only been here for a few minutes. I knew that the familiar faces passing by us couldn't faze me because he was by my side. "Come on, Ad. I know very well that you're the one just so desperate to play tonsil hockey all the time."

"Oh my God, do not call it that ever again," I whined, burying my face into his shoulder as we both shared a chuckle.

"Adelaide?"

We stopped dead in our tracks as a soft voice called my name. I spun around slowly, a grin appearing on my cheeks as I saw Angela, also known as Margo, also known as my best friend, standing in front of me. "Marge!" I screamed, letting go of Calum's hand to hug her tightly. I haven't seen her in months and it felt so wonderful to be enveloped in her embrace again.

"What are you doing here? Why aren't you in Australia?" She questioned, her thick eyebrows furred together in complete confusion.

"I'm back home now! Just got here two days ago," I stated proudly.

Her smile visibly diminished and she tucked her bright blonde hair behind her ear. "Oh. Why didn't you tell me?"

My stomach turned in knots as the guilt washed over me. I was a terrible friend. No, I was worse than that. I was barely even a friend to her. I had kept very scarce contact with Margo and I blamed it on the time difference but it was mainly because I was too consumed with my relationship with Calum. I never wanted to be one of those codependent girls who ditched her friends for her boyfriend, but that was exactly who I had became.

"I'm sorry, Margo. I've been an awful friend. I was so distracted with the move and the pressure and everything but there honestly is just no excuse for it. Can we please get together sometime this week and catch up? I have a lot to make up for."

"Of course, Addy," She insisted, then proceeded in glancing over at Calum who was still standing there awkwardly. Margo extended her hand out for him to shake. "You must be Calum. I'm Angela, but you can call me Margo."

He firmly shook her hand, grinning up at my childhood pal. "Well I'm Calum, but you can call me a Sex-God."

Her eyes widened for a second before she registered he was kidding, and a chorus of chuckles flowed through all of our eardrums. "Do not call him that. He's just a goofball."

"I should let you two get back to your date. You guys are cute together. I'm happy for you, Addy," Margo told me sincerely.

"Thanks. Are you sure you don't want to hang with us for a bit? I've really missed you. I know I'm sucky at showing it, but it's true," I informed her.

She shook her head, still beaming at me brightly. "No, it's okay. I've missed you too. But I'll see you soon."

"Definitely," I murmured, as her petite frame ascended off into the distance, leaving Calum and I alone again. He leaned forward and pressed a kiss onto the top of my forehead. "You still up for that roller-coaster?"

"I am," He responded, lacing our fingers together once again to form that unbreakable bond between our bodies. It let everyone know that we were together but it also let us know how much a simple gesture can portray our feelings for one another. "Ad?"

"Mm-hm," I mumbled lazily, nibbling away on his cotton candy again while my mind replayed my conversation with Margo and as I thought of better things I could have said to express how badly I felt for not staying in touch.

"I can tell you are going to like want some space now so you can see your old friends and stuff," Calum paused, glimpsing down at me. "I don't want you to feel bad about it, okay? Once the boys get here I'll have them to hang out with too. You don't have to be with me all the time. Even if you want to be alone with your parents I get that. Just because we're officially like living together doesn't mean we have to be clingy."

It amazed me how easily he could tell what was skimming through my mind. He eliminated all of my worries with just a simple monologue. I had no clue how we had formed such a strong connection.

"I'm so in love with you," I replied in a velvety tone. And man, it was so true.
