Chapter 39 // Calum
Calum's Point of View
// Yesterday //
"So she leaves tomorrow?" Ashton's voice spoke through the speaker on my phone.
"Unfortunately," I replied, feeling my stomach drop at the mere mention of Addy leaving me.
Jesus, I missed her so much. It's been a few days since I've spoken to her and the silence was making my heart crumble into tiny pieces. I know I wanted to have some space to think things over but my mind was made up since the moment I ever laid on eyes on the most beautiful girl in the entire world. She's the one. She was the girl I was meant to spend the rest of my life with. But that didn't mean I was going to.
"So what are you going to do? Just go to the airport kiss her and say goodbye?" Ashton pressed.
I slumped deeper into the sofa, curling my legs up to my chest and wrapping my free arm around them. "Yeah, I mean what else can I do? She has to leave and I can't go with her."
"Wait, so you're telling me you are going to drive to the airport, tell her you still love her and show some terrible PDA and then just let the heartbroken girl get on the plane? You're not even going to pull some Ross and Rachel crap and tell her not to get on it and to stay? You're going to let your girl leave?" Ashton hissed, sounding completely baffled by my plan.
I let out a frustrated sigh. "I have to let her go, Ash. If we're meant to be together then we will somehow get back together."
He groaned deeply from the other end. "No! You need to- ugh, whatever. Fine," Ashton finally gave in, and I could picture my best mate tugging on his hazel colored curls in annoyance. "You're home, right?"
"Where else would I be?" I responded sarcastically, making the two of us lightly share a laugh. I missed laughing with my best friends and I couldn't wait to go up to Sydney and stay with them for an entire week. Addy was supposed to join me up there with them though, so I'm not sure if I will be able to enjoy it as much as I would like to without her presence.
Ashton giggled again, his famous habit that rewarded him his title of being cute. "Okay. I got to go. Love ya, bro."
"Lub choo too," I joked. I didn't want to actually say "I love you" because anytime those three words flickered into my brain for even a milisecond I was reminded of Addy and how her velvety voice would say it to me with such passion and sincerity.
When Ashton ended the call, it made the background on my phone reappear. It was a picture of Ad and I, one of my favorite pictures in the entire universe, and I let my eyes scan over it. I could never change my background, no matter how much it made me miss her, because it filled me with so much happiness. She was mid-laughter with her arm around me, somehow managing to look hot and adorable all at the same time, and her gorgeous brown eyes were closed with those little wrinkles surrounding them that happens when you truly laugh. Seeing her happy just made me feel all fuzzy, and that's what love's all about, right? I was smiling down at her, probably thinking how in the hell was I lucky enough to be able to call this amazing girl my own.
I inhaled deeply, as all of our little memories replayed through my head. I hated when I was left alone because this was all I would do. Think about the two of us. Adelaide had this power of always making me giddy. I used to just shut everyone out after everyhing I went through with Ellie and Eric and going to prison, but she was one of the few people to look beyond my bad reputation and show me that I was a good person who deserved to feel like my head was in the clouds. Ad is the most important person in my life for that sole reason, and she always will be, whether or not we were living next door to each other or if we were living miles away from each other.
No matter how many times I try to comprehend it, I will never understand how lucky I am that I was able to fall in love so quickly and so immensely. I had the most beautiful girl, with her perfect smile that made you want to believe in world peace and her personality that was so complex I couldn't even begin to describe it. Ad is a hopeless romantic with an amazing sense of humor and she was so charming that everyone in the world would probably fall in love with her too. My baby used to be in the palm of my hands, but now I was going to have to let her slip through my fingers.
The front door to my house slammed open without a knock and I figured it was my father coming home from work. But it wasn't. Instead I saw a fluff of blonde hair come running towards me and slap me gently across the face.
"Wh- I, what? Luke?" I stammered since I was completely confused on what he was doing here. Ashton trailed in slowly behind him, which only increased my puzzled expression. He must have been in the car during our entire phone call.
"Are you a fuc-" Luke began to ask, then stopped himself and shook his head. "No, I'm not even going to ask that. You are an idiot. I can't believe you're going to let Adelaide go. Jesus Christ, if I had a girl as amazing as Addy I would marry her in a second. She is perfect for you, Cal. And as your best friends we are not letting you make such a stupid mistake."
My gaze shifted between the two of them. I was still slightly stunned to see them here unannounced and my cheek had a lingering tenderness from the smack. "Well how are we going to fix this?"
Ashton peeled his backpack off from around his shoulder and took out his silver laptop, handing it over to Luke. "It's simple. We are buying you a plane ticket and you are going to get to America before she does."
"I can't move to America," I whined, but Luke continued to surf the web for one of those ticket hunting websites. "I would miss you guys too much. Besides, there's no way my mum would let me go."
"Oh yes she would," My mother interrupted, coming out from the adjacent living room. "The boys and I have already discussed this. You need to be with Adelaide, she brings out the best in you. You're an adult and can live on your own for a bit, Calum. We will miss you, but you need to do this."
I opened my mouth to protest but was interrupted by Luke. "Ash and I are moving with you. And it's not even because of you or because of your hot girlfriend. It's because we want to. We'll fly down sometime next week or so because we have to figure out selling our house and finding a job and stuff. But we're moving too. So you have no reason to stay here."
I was suddenly feeling completely overwhelmed. My life was about to change right in front of my eyes. My friends and my parents were all encouraging me. This was absolutely insane and I could feel my heart pounding against my chest with nerves.
"Look how cheap this flight is!" Ashton squealed, pointing at the screen and snatching the mouse out of Luke's grip. "It leaves tonight. We're buying this right now."
"Wait," I finally managed to speak, pressing my hands to my forehead to try and comprehend everything that was happening. "Guys, I don't even know where she lives. What am I supposed to do when I get there?"
Mali bursted through the door, in a similiar fashion to what my mother just did only minutes before. I jumped slightly as she emerged into the room, holding her cell phone out right in front of me. "That's Addy's address. Did you honestly think I wanted to be a pen-pal? I'm not stupid. Get a cab after you get off the plane and go to her house."
My eyes glanced between all of them. They were all nodding at me with a knowing smile on their lips. This was happening. I was finally getting out of this town that has only ever brought me down. My reputation and past would be completely behind me. I would have a fresh start. And most importantly, I would have my Adelaide.
"Oh my God," I exclaimed, making them all laugh as I wrapped my arms around each of them in a hug. "So I'm moving to the United States. I can't believe this is real."
"Well you better believe it and you better go start packing, because your flight leaves in three hours," My mom teased, kissing my cheek as a proud expression plastered over her face.
"Go get 'em tiger!" Luke cheered, using his hand to slap me in the butt as I raced up the stairs.
--
My breathing was becoming irregular as I stepped foot off the extremely long and exhausting plane ride. I tugged down on my beanie to fix it's spot on my head and used my other palm to grasp my suitcase's handle.
America smelled funny.
I plopped down in one of the waiting area chairs and caught my breath. My fingers rubbed on my tired eyes, getting out the little boogers that always formed in the corner of them. My muscles felt fatigued from being cramped up in the plane as I traveled over the ocean seperating the two continents. I desperately wanted to curl up in a ball and fall into a deep hibernation, but I needed to make it to Ad's home and explain to her parents why I needed to stay there until she returned home.
My mouth parted and a loud yawn escaped my lips. Well sweet baby Jesus, I am absolutely knackered. I kept reminding myself that this was all going to be worth it when I get to see her surprised reaction.
I glimpsed down at my phone, skimming through my texts from my friends and my family. It was harder saying goodbye to them than I expected it to be, but it wasn't like I was going to lose communication with them with the move. Plus, Ashton and Luke would be over here soon enough, which helped make me feel more comfortable. Right now I was terribly lost and lonely.
Michael had asked me earlier yesterday if I was going to be at the airport today and I replied with yes, but that was before I knew about this. I didn't want to ruin the surprise by telling him the switch of plans, but I felt a little guilty for creating a sense of false hope.
The taxi driver was anticipating my arrival and I awkwardly slid into the backseat of his car as we drove off towards Adelaide's humble abode. My hands clasped together to help surpress my nerves, but it only made them start to sweat. What if her parents didn't like me? What if she never told them about me?
My mind was silenced from the worrisome thoughts when we pulled up to her house. Actually, it looked more like a mansion. No wonder they were able to pay for her to move to another country and seemed so concerned with her future. I remember her mentioning that her brother was some major stock broker and she always felt so inadequate in comparison to him. The strict parenting all kind of made sense now.
I tipped the driver and retrieved my luggage, rolling it behind my legs as I headed towards the front door. It was early morning and I hoped they were awake. I felt intimidated already, especially considering I was dressed in a pair of loose-fitting grey sweatpants and a navy t-shirt when they probably are expecting some boy in a tailored tuxedo. I closed my eyes tightly before knocking firmly, my knuckles grazing against the glass door that had their family crest etched onto it.
"Hello?" A woman who looked similar to Addy, in an older form, asked as she opened the door. She must be the birth-giver. She was quite scary with her lipstick-ridden lips pressed into a thin line and her eyebrows furred together in confusion at the sight of me on their doorstep. "Who are you?"
My body felt like it was about to be dripping in sweat as she stared at me. Who am I? I suddenly had the biggest mind- blank of all time as I subconsciously questioned my existence. I'm a teenage boy who was falsely accused of murder, a boy who lost a lot of his friends and struggled with grief, a boy whose world was turned upside down by a girl, a girl who I have fallen completely in love with, a girl who I would actually move across the planet for and deal with being judged by her apprehensive mother. But I was already accustomed to being judged by everyone, so it didn't really bother me. Oh Lord, she's still glaring at me.
"Calum," I finally blurted out after several moments of trying to recall my own name. I quickly composed myself and stuck out my hand for her to shake. "I'm Calum Hood, Adelaide's boyfriend. Well, at the moment I guess I'm her ex-boyfriend. It's nice to meet you, Mrs. Winters."
Ad's mother gasped, lifting one hand up to her chest in exasperation. "You- oh my. You flew all the way out here for my daughter?"
I blushed slightly, glimpsing down at my feet for a second. "Well, yeah. She doesn't know I'm here though. This is all very last minute. I just knew I didn't want to be without her. Ad is an incredible girl."
Mrs. Winters finally grinned at me, opening up the door and motioning for me to step inside. Her eyes seemed to get a bit glassy as she viewed me carefully kick my shoes off. "She is incredible, isn't she? I'm terribly sorry for splitting the two of you up. I'm just very protective of my baby girl. I've missed her, much like how I expect your mom will miss you too. I completely misjudged the relationship between you two. She will be so happy to see that you are here."
I smiled as well. "I hope so," I agreed, making her mother laugh. She wasn't a monster like I had always viewed her to be. "You have a lovely home."
"Thank you, sweetie. Why don't I show you to Addy's room upstairs. You can stay here and take a nap or relax for a bit. I'm sure you are quite tired from that flight. I'm about to make some breakfast too so you can come down at any time, okay?"
Score. Her mum likes me and I get some quality food. "Thank you, Mrs. Winters. I truly appreciate it."
Ad's mother led me up their grand marble staircase and down a majestic hallway. A man exited one of the bedrooms in a baggy white t-shirt and some athletic shorts, with scruff covering his jaw. I assumed this to be her father, and he was much more casual looking than her mother who was already in a professional apparel this early in the morning. He smiled at me immediately. "Calum!"
I was instantly embraced by the cuddly man, and I let out a small giggle. "Hello, sir. It's nice to meet you."
"Call me Ryan," Her father insisted, shaking his head at me. "I knew you were going to fight for her. Dammit, I'm so happy. Adelaide loves you so much. I could always tell because she talks about you the way Emily talked about me when we were teenagers. This is great, Calum. Thanks for coming."
I laughed, feeling all warm inside by hearing her dad's enthusiasm towards me. "Thank you, Mr. Wint- I mean, Ryan."
"Calum is going to rest for a little while and you can fangirl over him later, okay honey?" Mrs. Winters joked, making a light chuckle escape all of our mouth. "Addy's room is right there on the left. Don't be afraid to ask if you need anything at all, alright?"
I nodded gratefully, opening up the door and dropping my bag down on the floor before investigating every aspect of her room. She had cute pictures covering her closet wall and she looked so young and innocent in all of them. I had no idea who half the people in the photos were, but I loved seeing my beautiful girl look like such a cutie pie in her early high school years. Her walls were painted a bright blue, completely different than the black chalkboard paint I was used to.
My back flopped down onto her little queen sized bed. This is where Ad probably spent all of her time and I felt honored to be able to lay in her room and soak up her childhood. I felt even closer to her now that I have viewed the place where my entire world was raised.
Now I just had to wait until I got the chance to view my baby in her natural habitat.
