Chapter 36 // Diving
Adelaide's Point of View
When I had finally woken up from a long night of restless sleeping on my sofa, I was an even worse mood than before. This was mainly due to the fact that I was smack dab in front of an adorable couple that was snuggled up close together on my living room floor who had made me watch three annoying comedies last night. Michael's mouth was parted open slightly and faint snores were escaping from his nostrils as he clutched tightly onto Lucy, and I wanted nothing more than to be positioned around Calum like that.
I truly appreciated all of their attempts at making me smile, but I just wasn't in the mood for that quite yet. I didn't want to have to force laughter in order to relieve some pain in my heart, I wanted the boy who had stolen my heart to make me laugh again. I wanted to watch sappy movies with him and make fun of how cheesey it was, even though we were both very aware of how cheesy our relationship is. Or, was.
My feet hit the carpeted floor beneath me, the little shags seeping in between each of my toes, as I wobbled over towards the kitchen to pour myself a cup of crappy coffee. There appeared to be some clouds swirling around in the beige colored liquid as if the entire world was in a crummy mood as well.
The sounds of my spoon clinking around the edge of the mug as I stirred the milk into my burning hot coffee must have caused Michael and Lucy to wake up. I could hear hushed chatter coming from the living room and when I glimpsed over in their direction, the couple was untangling their bodies and began to approach me.
"Morning," I called, lifting the mug up to my lips. It was one of the only ones I had left since Calum had broken my others. I understood why he wanted to, because now there was nothing more I would like to do than break things.
Lucy slid into the barstool in front of me, her hand still intetwined with the groggy Michael who was trailing behind. "Hi Addy, how are you feeling today?"
"Still terrible," I stated with a shrug. My two coworkers shared a look that I wanted to wipe off their faces. I hated when people showed signs of pity. "What do you guys want to do today?"
Michael picked up a banana that had been left on my counter and he peeled back the outer layer before taking a bite. "Um, have you ever been cliff-diving? There is a really nice place where we can go to that's just down the beach."
I had been cliff-diving before in Los Angeles on a family vacation, but I've never been anywhere around here. It might be good for me to have that thrill and exhilaration rushing through my veins to distract me from everything surrounding me. "Let's do it."
Lucy nodded in agreement and I led her upstairs to my bedroom, lending her another bathing suit of mine to wear. As she dashed into the bathroom to get changed, I slipped into my bikini, throwing a lightweight sweater over it and putting a pair of pastel shorts on. I tucked a few pieces of my hair behind my ears, exposing my freckled cheeks even more.
"Ready to go?" Michael asked us, swinging his arm around his girlfriend happily and pressing a kiss onto the side of her temple. The jealousy kicked in again.
I simply shook my head to confirm this and the three of us strolled out of my back door, heading down the nearly empty beach. It was a bit chilly outside today since the sun was hidden by the puffy clouds, and a slight breeze from the continuous crashing waves kept tickling the light hairs on my arms. As we passed by Calum's house, I attempted to peak inside, but Lucy jumped in front of me and obstructed my view.
"Don't even try to look for him," Lucy ordered, putting her hand on my upperback and rubbing it carefully. "It will just make you more upset."
"Okay," I agreed, knowing that in the back of my mind it was true. But my heart yearned to catch a glance at him again and find out if he was just as affected by this as I was.
The three of us picked up on some nonsense conversation about the films we viewed last night, and Michael and Lucy were bickering over which character was the funniest. Although they were arguing, it was still an adorable manner that involved lots of laughter. I even found myself joking around with them, almost like I was going back to my old happy-go-lucky self.
But then I saw him.
Calum was perched on the edge of the pier, his feet dangling over the ocean. They hovered carefully above the waves and were kicking back and forth. His eyebrows were furred together in concentration and his pouty lips were pursed tightly together as his gaze was focused on the water. My heart clenched at the scene unraveling in front of me.
"Addy, what's wrong-" Lucy began to ask, until she looked over to where my eyes were directed. "Oh. It's okay. Come on. Let's keep moving."
I wanted to, I truly did. But my feet felt like heavy weights that could not be lifted out of the sand. I was frozen in place and my heart felt like it was breaking even more than before.
"Addy, let's go," Michael urged, grabbing onto my arm and trying to pull me away. His voice must have been just a little too loud though, because Calum looked over at us and made direct eye contact with me.
Now my heart was racing like it was in a marathon and I couldn't tell if it was from the butterflies I always got when I looked at the boy I was completely in love with, or if it was because I was embarrassed he caught me staring at him. Calum placed his hands onto the boardwalk and he pushed his body so he was standing up, and he started to walk over towards us, but he didn't tear his gaze away from me.
"Shit," I muttered to Lucy, feeling my hands suddenly become clammy as the nerves in my body increased. Was he rushing over to us to tell me he made a big mistake? Was he going to yell at me again? Would he even acknowledge anything was going on.
Calum stuck his hands in his pockets when he finally was directly in front of us. I think everyone could sense I was panicking since Michael and Lucy kept frantically exchanging glances at each other and me. "Hey," Calum greeted shyly.
"Hi Cal," I replied softly, mentally beating myself up for using his nickname. It flowed off my tongue so easily that I couldn't even stop it.
He waved to Michael and Lucy, who were tightly grasping each other's hands. "What are you all doing today?"
"We're going over by Lavish Lagoon to go cliff-diving. It's so awesome," Michael interrupted before I could say something stupid. He gestured down the beach to where a large platform-like cliff was jutted out from the beach.
Calum turned towards me. "Are you going too?"
"Yeah."
He licked his lips carefully, the same lips that I have kissed countless times. I should've known he'd be at the pier. I should've known not to come with them. I should've known that seeing him in person and having this immense amount of awkwardness between us would just shatter my heart even more. "Well, just be careful, okay? I don't want you getting hurt."
I couldn't help but let a light laugh escape my mouth at the irony of his words. "Too late," I murmured quietly, but I was sure that he heard me.
"We should get going before it gets crowded," Lucy suggested, sending a fake smile towards Calum. Her excuse was merely just in an effort to get me away from him before I started crying again.
Calum nodded, lifting his hand to the back of his head to scratch it gently. "Right. Okay. Uh, Ad, will you- can you- can we," He stuttered, as his tongue kept fumbling over the words he was trying to say. Calum sighed. "Actually, just forget it, nevermind. I'll see you around, okay?"
I felt my lips curl up into a sheepish smile. I wanted him to say his original thoughts, but I guess we can't always get what we want. "Yeah, I'll see you around."
Lucy slipped her arm in between mine as if she was escorting me as we turned in the other direction to proceed on with our journey. I had an overwhelming desire to burst into tears just by that simple encounter. "Wait, Ad?"
I spun around, a little too fast, and saw Calum take a step closer to me. I could feel my heart rate increasing even more than before as it pounded loudly against my chest with anticipation. "Yes?"
"I'm really sorry," He replied sadly as a melancholy expression plastered over his tan face.
I bit down on my lip in dissappointment. "Me too."
--
"Just forget about him," Michael demanded as we reached the top of the mountain and were preparing to jump down into the waters beneath us. "I mean, just forget about him for now. Just enjoy this adventure. Don't think about it."
"I'll try not to," I responded, pulling my sweater over my head and placing it on the pile of clothes that we had formed. "He's just so- ugh."
"Tell me about it," Lucy said with annoyance, rolling her eyes at what just happened. She bounced on the top of her feet as she peered down over the edge and let out a little squeal. "I'm so nervous."
Michael placed his hands on her bare waist and spun her around, tugging her body against his so they collided together, the same exact trick that Calum used to use on me. Jesus. Mikey smirked down at his girlfriend as he planted a kiss on Lucy's lips. "Don't be nervous, baby. We're going to have tons of fun. And this is coming from me! I hate being outside! So it's obviously going to be worth it."
She giggled, reaching her hands up to behind his neck and tugged slightly on his hair. He whispered something to her that I couldn't hear, which made them both start laughing again and then within seconds their lips were molded together into another make-out session.
After several moments of me awkwardly standing off to the distance and only hearing the sounds of their smooches, I finally coughed. "Yeah guys, I'm still here."
Lucy's cheeks turned the color of her hair as she hopped away from Michael, an innocent grin covering her face. "Oops, sorry! Alright, let's jump in already."
"On the count of three?" Michael suggested, as we traveled closer to the edge.
It really wasn't that big of a drop, and the water looked warm and calm down below. This was probably the closest thing to free-fall that I would get unless I went sky-diving.
The three of us interlocked our hands together like the cute best friends we were. Michael slowly counted to three, and on the third, we all leaped off of the cliff and went soaring down towards the ocean. I screamed in joy as the wind whipped across our fast moving bodies, a complete rush running through me.
We hit the water with barely any sting at all, and as the waves smothered my skin I felt like I was high off of adrenaline. I swam up and resurfaced, viewing my two friends look back at me with the same smile that I was wearing, and we all let out an impressive cheer.
I slicked my wet hair back with the palm of my hands as I inhaled deeply to relive the exhilaration I just absorbed. I let my body float on top of the salty ocean that was incredibly warm, and for the first time since the break-up, I let myself truly chuckle.
"That was so much fun," I gushed.
"See? I told you don't even need Calum to have fun!" Michael exclaimed, which instantly made my face pale at the mention of him. My stomach had that dropping feeling again and I got the reoccuring flashback of him waving goodbye to me. "Too soon?"
Lucy slapped him gently. I tried to play it off casually as I forced a small smile. "Why don't we go get changed and grab a bite to eat?"
