Chapter 25 // Lunch

Adelaide's Point of View

This grilled cheese sandwich sitting in front of me was the most beautiful thing I had ever laid eyes on in my entire life. It was perfectly toasted, with slight brown burn marks on the roof of the white bread from the panini maker. Cheese was oozing out of the sandwich and it was the perfect shade of yellow. As I lifted the sandwich to my lips, the divine taste of perfect crunchiness and soft cheese overtook my tastebuds. There was definitely a banger happening inside of my mouth right now.

I hadn't been out to eat here once since I had moved here. Michael recommended this adorable shop, that seemed to resemble a Panera Bread. It had delicious sandwiches, bagels, doughnuts and salads and I took advantage of buying an over-sized chocolate chip cookie as well.

"So what do you think I should do?" Michael asked hesistantly, lifting his cup of soda to his lips and swallowing the mixture of ice and cola down his throat.

I wiped my mouth with the scratchy paper napkin. "Well, you definitely need to apologize. I'm not sure if he will accept it at first, it has been a long time. But the apology is always the first step."

He nodded his head, taking a bite out of his bagel that had crispy bacon shoved inside of it, along with juicy tomatoes and lettuce. "I'm really an as- I mean, butthole, aren't I?"

I giggled as he almost slipped out profanity next to the family sitting next to us with their four small kids all in hearing distance. Michael waved to them when he first got here, so I was aware that they knew each other. But the again, everyone in this town knows each other. "No, you're not a complete butthole. I mean, kind of. You did screw him up pretty bad, but so did the rest of the town. Did you honestly think Calum could do something like that?"

He scrunched his nose as he pondered the question. "No. But everyone else thought he was guilty, so I just went along with it. I was good friends with Eric too, and after he testified against him I started to believe it more. Luke hated me so much after that. I guess it makes sense since he was the only one who knew about Cal and Ellie's secret relationship. God, I'm so dumb! How did I think that he was in on some big lie too?"

"It's alright," I assured him, extending my hand out across the table to pat his arm. "You just got sucked into peer pressure. That doesn't mean you have to be stuck in that mindset for the rest of your life."

"We have to tell all of this to Lucy too. She was close with Ellie and despised Calum because of this. She never bought the whole drunk driver thing, but maybe we can convince her that it's true," Michael suggested.

It was adorable the way he brought Lucy up into conversation. His cheeks seemed to glow brighter just by the mention of her name. My match-maker tendencies came out. "Okay, we can try. Speaking of Lucy, do you happen to have a crush on her?"

He gazed down to his BLT, his cheeks flushing with a hint of pink as he sheepishly shook his head in confirmation. I clapped my hands together victoriously. "I knew it!" I cried out, much louder than I had anticipated. "This is great news, okay? I'm going to get you two together."

"No! I dont want her to know," Mikey murmured shyly, nibbling away on his bagel with the blush on his puffy cheeks providing a contrast to his typically pale skin color. "We've been friends for so long. I don't want to ruin that if she doesn't feel the same way."

I laughed to myself. Lucy had already admitted to me that she liked him, but I wasn't sure if I was able to disclose that information to him. "I'm pretty sure she does. I mean, I haven't talked to her about it before, but it's kind of obvious that you two have chemistry. You're going to tell her whether you like it or not."

"Addy," He groaned.

I stood up from my chair and piled my trash together, heading towards the bin to throw it away. Michael had swallowed his last bit by the time I approached him and I tugged on his arm to get him off of his butt. "Come on. Let's go to my house to practice what you're going to say. Then we can go talk to Cal if you'd like to."

He sighed heavily before finally giving in to my orders. "Fine. But please promise you won't tell Lucy, okay? I want to be the one to tell her."

"I promise," I agreed, crossing my heart with my pointer finger to emphasize that I meant the truth. Crossing your heart and pinky promises were practically equivalent to signing contracts. I followed my coworker out of the cute little bistro and ducked inside of his car, waiting to be driven back to my home.

--

Our butts were firmly placed in the sand, the two of us overlooking the glorious ocean in front of us. My legs were sprawled out and from time to time, the tide would reach high enough to kiss the tips of my toes and tickle my feet. The sun was shining down on us perfectly and I hoped that the hint of Irish in me wouldn't cause my skin to burn in the direct sunlight. I was regretting not placing a pair of thick shades on the bridge of my nose.

Michael inhaled deeply, breathing in the salty stench that swept through the gentle breeze. "Okay, so how should I tell her? I'm bad at this. The last time I told someone how I felt about them I got slapped in the face."

I frowned at him. The reference to what had happened to us a few weeks ago still made my stomach churn with guilt. He nudged me with his knee. "I'm just kidding, Addy. But seriously, what should I do?"

I shrugged. "Whatever you're comfortable with doing. Like don't make it some big scene if you don't want to. Just be casual about it, I don't know. Here, I'll be Lucy. You just practice what you're going to say."

Mikey nodded, giggling nervously. He rubbed his clammy hands against his legs to remove the excess sweat that had been forming. "Um, okay. So, I think we should hangout sometime, if you want to?"

I pretended to be oblivious to what was going on and I batted my eyelashes at him. "What do you mean? We hangout all the time?"

He bit down on his lip. "Right, but I didn't know if you wanted to actually hangout. Like go on a date with me. I think I really like you."

I chuckled, wrapping my hands around his neck happily. "Of course I'll go on a date with you, Michael! I like you too!" I cheered in a high pitched voice in an effort to sound more ilke Lucy. The two of us were cracking up as we pulled away from the embrace.

"You've got to be kidding me."

We spun around, noticing Calum standing tall behind us with a glare evident on his features. I scrambled to my feet, dusting off the sand on my body frantically. "No, Cal! This isn't what it looks like! I swear."

He snickered in a condescending manner, shaking his head at me. "I heard what you said, Adelaide. I just don't get it. Why did you cheat on me, with him, of all people! It could have been anyone and you picked Michael. Screw you."

"No, it's not like that, Calum!" Michael yelled, reaching out to grab ahold of my boyfriend. "She was helping me out. She never cheated on you and she never will."

Calum's fist collided with Michael's jaw within an instant and I shrieked in horror. "You shut the hell up, Michael! You already have told her way more than you needed to."

He huffed, turning around away from my coworkers holding onto his jaw in pain and trying to regain composure. "Calum! Wait! At least let me explain everything!" I called, but he just shook his head again and sprinted towards his house without another word. I turned towards Michael and offered a hand to help him up. "Are you okay?"

Michael spit out some saliva. "Yeah, I'm fine," He huffed. "I'm sorry, Addy. Go try and talk to him."
