Chapter 22 // Truth

Adelaide's Point of View

The plastic latel swirled through the mixture of broth and noodles, filtering out any excess pieces of chicken. I lifted the enlarged spoon up to my lipstick ridden mouth, tasting the hot liquid. I sighed as my tongue burned from the sudden heat and placed the latel down on my countertop, lifting the silver pot off of my stove and placing it on a pot-holder.

It had been a few days since I've seen Calum and I decided to search online for some chicken noodle soup recipe to make Mrs. Hood. My grandmother always insisted that soup was the cure for every possible problem. I'm not sure if it will even help with whatever illness she is suffering from, and I'm positive it tastes like crap, but I figured the gesture would be appreciated.

I dialed Calum's number into my phone and lifted it to my ear, pressing it between my shoulder and cheek as I managed to dump the soup into a sealable container. He has barely even sent me any text messages so I was not surprised when his phone went to voicemail after multiple rings. I used Calum's busy schedule as an excuse to chat with Margo and my family, but I had to admit I was incredibly lonely without him.

Only on rare ocassions do I ever leave voicemails. I feel like they are always utterly awkward. But I wanted Calum to know that I didn't call him on accident or anything. I wanted him to be aware of the fact that I needed to hear his voice.

"Hey, uh, it's me. Addy, if you didn't check caller ID or if you, like, don't know how I sound. Um, I made some homemade soup for your mom. I can drop it off or you can pick it up or something if you want. I don't even know if it will help. You're probably better off with Campbell's." I giggled softly out of a nervous habit. "Um, call me back if you can. I hope you're okay. Yeah, bye."

I ended the call in a swift motion and placed my phone back onto the counter. I strolled over into my living room and fell into my couch, being smothered by the layers of blankets. I have been sleeping downstairs lately due to the heat wave and the main level was always cooler than the rest of my home.

Within a few short minutes of my empty thoughts swallowing my brain, a familiar figure appeared on my back porch, peering inside the reflective glass windows. A grin formed on my face as I waved my boyfriend inside, letting him know that the door was unlocked.

Calum entered the room where we are constantly hanging out in and he smiled widely. He had bags clinging underneath those big brown eyes and his cheeks seemed even more puffy than usual. His dark hair was a disheveled mess, but I was still eager to tangle my fingers through them.

"You didn't say 'I love you.'" Calum stated as he approached me, his hands immediately grasping my waist and pulling me off of the couch to form a collision between our bodies.

"Wh- I, what?" I stammered. My confusion led to stuttering and what I'm sure was a highly attractive puzzled expression.

Calum smirked at me. "When you ended the voicemail. You didn't say 'I love you.'"

I chuckled, leaning up on my tippy-toes to gently kiss his soft lips, the ones that I never seem to be able to get off of my mind. "Well, you never called me back."

"Why would I call you back when I could just come over and see you and your fabulous soup?" His teasing tone made the two of us burst into a fit of laughter, nothing out of the ordinary. Calum plopped down to where I was previously sitting and stretched his arms out against the length of the couch. "Hey, do you mind if I borrow your laptop for a little bit? I gave mine to my mum for her to work at home and I have to check a few things."

"Sure," I agreed, unplugging my computer from the corner of the room and handing it to him. He situated it on his lap and his long fingers clicked away, pressing on various keys. I figured it was the least I could do.

I turned on my television and mindlessly flipped channels, attempting to find something to free my boredom while Calum did whatever he needed to do. The silence was comfortable. It was nice just knowing that he was next to me and feeling the contact of our thighs next to each other. We didn't need a conversation to enjoy ourselves, but when I would sneak glances at the beautiful boy's profile, I knew that I desperately wanted to spend time with him.

My palms carefully cupped the sides of my laptop, causing his eyes to widen in surprise. I set it aside and climbed onto his lap, my legs straddling him as I delicately placed my hands behind his neck. He bit his lip in a seductive manner, obviously no longer upset about me taking away the computer. "I missed you."

"I missed you too," Calum purred, leaning forward to just barely touch our lips together before planting kisses down my jawline.

"How is your mom feeling?" I blurted out, regretting my question as soon as it came out. "Sorry."

The bulge in his pants instantly decreased and he retreated away from my neck. Well crap, I ruined the mood. "It's okay. Erm, she's feeling better now. Still sick. But definitely better."

"That's good. I was worried," I admitted, combing through his locks with my fingers.

"Why?" He spat harshly, making a face at me. "You barely know her."

I gulped at his astounded reaction. I scoffed, rolling my eyes at him in annoyance. "I was worried for you. She's your mother. I didn't want you going through that. Sorry for giving a shit about you," I retorted sarcastically, stepping off of his lap.

His hand gripped my wrist, preventing me from moving any further. "Wait, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap at you. It's just been rough. I don't want to talk about that with you. I talk about it enough with Mali. I want you to distract me from everything else like you always do, not bring my attention back to my mum. I don't want to think about my mum when I'm kissing my extremely hot girlfriend."

I beamed down at him as he stood up to kiss me carefully, letting the fireworks between us erupt to the tune of a song. "It's alright," I assured him when we pulled away, quickly forgiving him for his comment. "Come with me."

Our fingers interlaced together as I led him upstairs the guest room where I propped open one of the windows and urged him to climb through it with me. There was a small platform here that made the access to the roof simple. "I found my own happy place," I explained, motioning to the flat roof with the clear view of the ocean in front of us.

"It's almost as beautiful as you," Calum said in awe as he glanced around, finally laying down on one of the cushions that I had brought up earlier.

I layed down on the adjacent cushion and he turned on his side, lifting up my t-shirt and tracing his fingers across my stomach, exactly like how he did when he first slept over my house.

"I absolutely love the sound of waves," I randomly bursted out, hearing the crashes of them against the sand tickle my ears.

"I like the sounds you make," He cooed, leaning forward to leave a sloppy kiss on my nose.

"You're being extremely cheesey today," I pointed out, moving his hand off of my belly to intertwine our fingers together.

Calum shrugged nonchalantly, sending a goofy grin in my direction. "It's so peaceful up here. I wish we could stay on your roof forever. We could just put the world away."

I scooted closer to him and rested my head on his shoulder, pushing the nose he had just kissed into his neck. "We would get so disconnected, though," I reminded him.

Calum grunted. "I wouldn't mind."

--

The scent of flowers filled my nostrils as I tugged the polyester apron over my neck, letting it drape across my petite body like a pair of ugly curtains that I would find at my aunt Janine's house. A perky smile was evident on my face as I strolled towards the backroom, happy to see my loveley coworkers again.

Michael and Lucy were laughing about something together and I felt bad for interrupting their one-on-one time. This reminded me of my duty as a matchmaker to get those two together, no matter what it takes.

"Hi there babycakes," I greeted, giggling at my term of endearment while I waved to both of them and leaned against the work station. "How are we all today?"

Lucy grinned happily at my presence, tossing me a stack of roses that I had to cut the thorns off of. "I'm good, but obviously not as good as you, Addy."

"Lucy we are grabbing some crappy coffee together on Friday after work. It's been decided as of right now," I declared. It was out of the blue, but I really wanted to discuss with her my tactics on getting Mikey to ask her out in a private place and not where his mother could be lurking around.

"Friday? Okay. I'm down," She replied, snipping away at satin ribbon with a pair dull scissors. "Is Michael allowed to join us?"

"No," I yelled quickly, then covered my mouth with my dry hands. "I mean, not this time. We have strictly girl things to discuss."

Michael shook his head at me, his lips pursed together in a flat line. His attention seemed to be elsewhere as he had been zoning out until his name had been called. "Okay, whatever. But Addy, I really need to talk to you."

"About what?" I asked, nerves pumping through my veins.

"It's been two weeks," He simply stated, his greenish eyes widening. "Has Calum told you what happened yet?"

"No," I answered, a lump in my throat forming as I remembered Michael's deal. I could feel sweat starting to form on my forehead, and the salty liquid would be dripping down my nose shortly.

Mikey sighed, letting his tongue glide across his chapped lips. My clammy hands squeezed against my thighs. My teeth were chattering as I inhaled and exhaled at a slow place, anxious to hear why everyone in town was afraid of the sweetest boy I knew. This information could potentially change everything in our relationship or it wouldn't change a thing. I was either going to react with anger or sadness, or possibly both.

A part of me didn't want to know Calum's mysterious past. As much as the curiousity killed me, I didn't want to know in case it was something that could break us up. I loved him too much to be without him. I missed him with only three days apart, how would I cope without seeing his bright smile everyday? I promised I would never leave. If I had to break that promise, we would both be equally as crushed.

My shaky fingers reached up to tuck a loose strand of hair behind my ear. My lip was quivering uncontrollably as Michael gazed down at me and Lucy's stare from behind us burning a whole into my back.

"Addy," Michael paused, letting out a deep breath. "Calum killed Ellie."
