Chapter 10 // Never Have I Ever

Adelaide's Point of View

The only color that was visible was pink.

Pink flowers. Pink ribbon. Pink baskets. Everything in the entire store was pink. Naturally, I had the urge to puke. Too much of one color always made me feel uneasy, which is why all of my outfits had to involve two different shades.

"Did Valentine's Day come early this year?" I joked as I headed to the back of the shop.

Lucy giggled, pulling all of her firey red hair onto one side of her face, making her freckles even more visible than before. "Mrs. Clifford read somewhere that people are more likely to buy pink flowers in the summer, so she's going a little overboard for sales."

"I guess that makes sense," I replied half-heartedly, although I'm almost positive that confusion was still etched onto my features. My fingers grasped the hunter green apron hanging on the back of the door, the one that seemed to be sticking out like a sore thumb in contrast to the lively pink color swarming me, and I placed it around my neck. The heavy polyseter material dug into my skin as I readjusted it so it was flowing freely.

Michael appeared from the storage room, a crunchy taco resting in his palms, and the overflow of beef residing above his lips in the midst of his scruffy face. I chuckled at his messy appearance and lifted my hand up to wipe the crumbs off of him, creating a grin on his lips. "Well hello, Miss Addy. Are you a neat freak or something?"

I shook my head. "No but I am a bit jealous of your taco," I admitted, extending my hand out to take it out of his grasp. He didnt put up a fight and I lifted the Mexican meal to my mouth, devouring the spicy taste.

"You tilt your head funny," Michael declared, poking my side repeatedly.

"You're funny looking," I shot back, passing him back his taco.

Michael stuck his tongue out at me as he took a seat in the stool next to Lucy and swung his arm around her. I found their relationship together to be adorable, but neither of them seemed interested in dating each other. There seemed to be some kind of chemistry between the two, but maybe they needed someone else to stir up their romance. And I loved being a matchmaker.

It has been an entire week since I had went over to Calum's house for dinner. He was still staying at my house, but after the third day he went back and made up with his mother, and now Calum is just coming and going as he pleases. It was comfortable. I liked having a sleepover every night, I liked coming home from work and knowing that I was going to have someone to hang out with, or someone to help me cook dinner. We've shared a few kisses here and there, and I can't deny my crush on him, but we still were just friends and nothing more.

I have yet to build up enough courage to speak with Michael about his previous friendship with Calum. Anytime we get on the subject of Calum it doesn't end too well. But I was still quite curious to see what had happened from his point of view.

As I proceeded in silently making the bouquets from the new order form, I decided that I needed to bring it up. "Hey Mikey," I called from my table. He picked his head up from whatever nonsense conversation he was having with Lucy and glanced at me. "So, um I heard that you and Calum used to be best friends."

A heavy groan escaped his mouth and the sound traveled thoroughout the storage room. Michael stood up completely and waddled across the small gap between the front desk and the bouquet station, where he dragged a chair out from underneath the table, initiating a squeak from the touch of the two metals, and plopped his butt down. "Where did you hear this?"

"Mrs. Hood."

He rolled his eyes. The color of them were still mysterious to me. Some days they seemed like a vibrant blue but other times they reflected a faded green. I found myself constantly staring into his eyes often and I which that my own eyes were that interesting as well. "So you've met his family now. Wow, Addy, things must be getting pretty serious."

"Michael," I whined. "We're not dating or anything. We're just good friends. Like you and me."

Michael didn't respond to my lie, he just kept his attention on the flowers in front of us. My relationship between Calum and Michael were completely different, but I cared about both of them. They both made my life enjoyable. "Can you please just say something? Like tell me why you guys aren't friends anymore? Or do you miss him? Or what was it like when you were friends?"

"We aren't friends anymore because of what he did. I don't miss him anymore, I miss who he used to be. I don't even remember what it was like when we were friends because all I can ever think about when I hear his name what he did and what kind of a messed up person he is. I don't want to talk about that piece of crap again, especially with you, Adelaide."

I grimaced, flinching slightly at his spiteful words. "Okay, you're right, this is a bad discussion for us. I'm sorry for asking."

"Hey," Michael said sadly, his face softening when he noticed my discomfort. He placed one hand on my bicep and rubbed it in a comforting manner. "I'm sorry if I made you upset, okay? I forget that you two are friends. It still blows my mind that someone as nice as you could be hanging around that monster. Um, if you want to talk about this at a different time, we can? Alright?"

I grinned, pulling him in for a hug. His pudgy arms around me always made me feel content. My favorite quality about Michael was his sarcastic sense of humor, but a close second would have to be his hugs and the way he put his chin on the top of my head.

--

My flats clicked against the hardwood floors beneath my feet as I swayed inside my house, following the sound of the television in the kitchen to let me know where Calum was currently located. I set my bag down on the kitchen table and glanced into the living room, seeing Calum stretched out on the sofa, one of his hands stuck down his loose, heather grey sweatpants.

"Oh God, Cal," I yelled, shielding my eyes with the palms of my hands.

He chuckled loudly and I could hear his footsteps approaching me and his fingers carefully wrapped around my wrists, uncovering my eyes and putting the two of us face to face. He was sporting a goofy grin. "I wasn't doing anything, Ad, it's just warm down there."

"Good to know," I responded sarcastically, which only made him laugh more at my un-comfortableness on the subject. "How was your day?"

"Boring," Calum admitted, placing both of his hands on the side of my waist. "I was just waiting around all day, pretty much. I actually think I might go stay at my house tonight. Mali has been bugging me to come home."

I pouted, jutting my bottom lip out. Calum mimicked my expressions to annoy me. "Aw, no more sleepovers? I'm going to miss you," I confessed, taking a step forward so our bodies were now touching and the heat from him radiated off his skin. I could feel his toned abdominals through the thin layer of his band t-shirt.

He planted a kiss onto my forehead, which I had to admit was my absolute weakness, and a small smile grew on my face. "Babe," He said in his velvety voice as his index finger tilted my chin up to look into his chocolate brown eyes. "You know for a fact that I'm still going to see you everyday. You're my best friend."

I faked a smile, a bit of me deflating as the term friend was thrown around. I'm aware that our relationship is a bit more than just a simple friendship, but I still hoped that he thought of me in a romantic way like I did. I hoped that he analyzed my face and body, just like how I do whenever I stare at his prominent cheekbones or the way he glides his tongue over his teeth when he's nervous or the way his eyes crinkle up when he's truly laughing. "Let's play a game," I suggested.

"Like what? We can't play like truth or dare or anything when there is only two of us," Calum stated matter-of-factly.

"Well then let's play never have I ever," I demanded, tugging on his arm and plopping the two of us down on the couch. It was a silly game that I used to play all the time at slumber parties, where you would hold up all ten of your fingers and if you had done the task you put a finger down. The person with the most fingers up at the end was the winner. "I'll go first. Never have I ever told a real lie. Only fibs."

He rolled his eyes at me, putting his finger down. His fingers were so incredibly long. Calum would probably make an excellent piano player, or even a good gynecologist. "How have you never told a big lie? I almost don't believe you, but whatever. Um, never have I ever passed out."

I bit my lip, as memories from a frat party I attended in my college years flooded through my brain. I slowly placed a finger down, my cheeks blushing slightly. "In my defense, the only reason I passed out was because I was really sick and my friend dragged me out to a party full of people dancing and I got really dizzy."

Calum smirked, chuckling slightly at me. "It's all tied up."

"Never have I ever puked from alcohol," I stated proudly, watching as he grumbled and placed another finger down. "Such a lightweight, Cal."

"Shush! Okay, fine, never have I ever lived in America," Calum exclaimed, making me gasp. We both laughed out loud as he resorted to such a lame attempt at making me lose.

"Well if we're not taking this seriously then, never have I ever been in jail," I said while giggling.

Calum's lip quivered and his bronze skin was flushed with embarrassment. His dark brown eyes narrowed slightly as he carefully put down a finger, shaking his head. I raised my eyebrows in surprise, not expecting that answer at all. "W-what?" I stuttered, feeling breathless.

He stood up quickly, darting towards my back door. "It's a long story. I have to get home. Bye, Ad."

I was flabbergasted with my mouth lingering open as he dashed across the sand back to his own house. I was utterly puzzled. Why was Calum in prison? Did this have anything to do with the warnings that I receive from Michael? Was this a part of the so-called incident?

My mind was racing with thoughts. I desperately wanted an explanation, but I knew very well that Calum was not going to open up to me and clarify his answer. I wasn't necessarily scared of this news, I was more shocked to even think of Calum in a burnt orange jumpsuit locked behind cold, metal bars.
