IF IT WERE POSSIBLE, EVAN ASTOR WOULD BE NEITHER A KOOK NOR A POGUE. Her parents have money ─ lot's of it, at that ─ and yet have never bothered to involve themselves or their daughter in any of that cliche, outdated bullshit, and Evan is just fine with that. She's humble, not spoiled. She's grateful, not bratty. She's polite, not arrogant. And as far as perfect goes, the Astor family of Figure Eight are pretty damn close.
The only problem is, that's not how it works. Kooks and Pogues don't get along. You can't be neither. Facts say ─ the Astors are Kooks. A shit tonne of money: check. High-class jobs: check. Figure-eight estate: check. And yet, unlike any of their neighbours, or work friends, or even close relatives, the Astors don't like that. They want to be viewed as normal as possible and as approachable as possible. To all ends of the island. But again, that's not how it works.
Jane and Thomas Astor have since retreated to their rich, lawyer friends, as they will never be any more than their yacht, and terrace balcony, and dining parlour. And as sad as that is, it must do. The Kooks aren't the nicest of people. Sure, on the outside, cute as a button, all of them. But pay attention for longer than a brief "hello!" and all the ugliness unveils itself. Jane and Thomas get by.
But to their daughter, Evan, getting by with the most insufferable group of stuck-up, well-off high school kids, won't do. Fortunately, Evan chose her one friend long before social status mattered.
JJ Maybank is quite literally the reason for Evan Astor's existence. She loves his carefree lifestyle and envies a life like his ─ doing whatever he wanted, without having to worry if Daddy's law firm will hire him when he comes of age. She loves how they "defy the island's two tribe tradition" and are the best of friends despite their differing bank numbers. Of course, being eleven, when they met for the very first time, neither Evan nor JJ quite understood the technicalities of being a Kook or a Pogue, but Evan still marvels at their modern take on life.
Evan wondered why he befriended her in the first place. She was quiet, most likely had her head in a book, and her first words to him were probably some geeky shit about the weather and how unlikely it was for that time of year. And yet, four years later, he hadn't left her side.
JJ's friends didn't seem to find a problem with a Kook in their midst. Although she was quiet and kept to herself at school, Evan funded several of their adventures, had a pool they occasionally crashed, and her parents didn't look down on them when they popped by for drinks.
They were the unlikely of friends, and yet it worked so very well. So while JJ spent his time riding the waves, Evan was not far from him, on the sand reading Harry Potter.
But when Evan finds herself crushing on the Jock from across the road, her introverted instincts and low self-esteem cause Evan to lie to the boy's face ✧ and she creates a false facade, pretending to be someone she's not. And being the outgoing, fun-thriving boy he is, JJ Maybank wasn't just going to tell his best friend to do the right thing. Which in this case, would be to tell the Kook that Evan liked the truth about herself ─ that she couldn't surf, reads for fun and that she wasn't as willing to go to the party the following week than she had initially said. Instead, JJ was going to help her fix her problem.
JJ is going to teach her how to surf, introduce her to "normal kid things" and give her a 101 on how to act at teenage parties. He is going to help her put her money where her mouth is.

─ i feel that this is the worst summary in this shop and this is also another plot where i don't have a lot to say
─ jj is the popular boy and evan is the dorky girl in that one type of seriously stereotypical movie genre that strangely become friends
─ they kind of remind me of bianca and wesley from the duff :) of which i now realize this plot is very similar to the plot of that actual movie . . .
─ you can create the guy or girl that evan starts crushing on, but they must be a kook, and live somewhere near her. it's also up to you to decide how they meet!
─ jj isn't too happy that evan starts to fall for a kook or anyone for that matter, but soon realizes that it's what she wants and that's why he decides to help her
─ again evan is the stereotypical "geek". ie. she reads, studies a lot, doesn't socialize that much (besides with jj and therefore with the pogues), she writes for her school newspaper, tutors other students. so when she sparks conversation with someone she finds really "cute" and someone that is considered "popular" in the high school scene, she panics and tells him/her/them a bunch of lies that she believes to make her seem cool. she tells jj, he thinks she's stupid, but agrees to help her out
─ evan loves kiara and vice versa
─ i never do friends to lovers, but i don't hate this plot that much :)
