Drew Filch is a squib. Yup! That's right! And she would like you to know that it sucks. Drew thinks that the best way to describe it is when something is so close, you can feel it, but the person on the other end, is constantly tugging it away from you, just that little bit out of reach. She was the pig, and being a witch was the carrot that the universe was constantly hanging over her nose.

Growing up a Squib started out fine. A little depressing, a little unfortunate, but she grew to live with the fact that magic? Would never be her's. Her mum was a witch. May she rest in peace. Yup! That's also right! To add to Drew Filch's sob story of her teenage life, her mother died when she was fourteen, and suddenly the light of her life, was ripped away from her, and that carrot suddenly got a heck of a lot further away. Her mother was her teacher ─ in all aspects of life. Maths, English, a bit of French (although Drew would like to make it clear she was terrible and any native French would probably talk fancy shit about her behind her back), and when she was lucky, her mum would show her some magic. But that was the closest she ever got to it. Because every Squib knows, they will never quite get there.

Drew's father's tried. Quite hard, at that, actually. But no matter the reading he did, or handbooks he bought, Argus Filch would never quite get there either. And so he turned to his work. Widowed, and magic-less, he got a job as a caretaker for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Drew learned that he quite liked it there. Mrs Norris ─ Argus' pride and joy. Sometimes Drew thinks her father loves his cat more than her ─ had a nice home, it was okay pay, and he got to spend all of his time surrounded by magic.

And so, after two years of hearing great things about the Wizarding School, Drew said, why not? And decided at age sixteen, to hop on a train to Scotland, and help her dad out as caretaker.

But remember: Drew's a Squib, desperate to learn magic, and live life like the teenage witches at Hogwarts do. But that's not possible. As much as she pretends, as much as she dreams, Drew will never be a student at Hogwarts (the sorting hat won't sort you!). She'll never get her first wand (Ollivander's does sound lovely . . . ). And she'll never get to find out what her Patronus would be (it's a bit sad really). Because she is no witch, and it's not meant to be.

But maybe if she lives the lie long enough, it might come true?

this entire plot is heavily inspired by the movie maid in manhattan and if you haven't seen it, please do <3 it makes my heart so happy

a squib is basically someone who has at least one wizard/witch for a parent but has no magical abilities. e.g argus filch is a squib

so yes, argus had sex and reproduced. it may be hard, but if you want to write this plot, you're gonna have to get over that <3

the summary doesn't explain where dean comes in, so i'll try explain it simpler now:

drew goes to work with her dad at hogwarts for the school year as she too is a squib and hopes to learn some magic

dean runs into her whilst she is "on duty" i.e cleaning something

drew says that she's a student, and makes up some silly excuse that she is in detention, but she's actually working

she takes an interest in dean and dean takes an interest in drew too, but he's under the impression that she's a student there

so, drew takes a spare set of robes from some cupboard (imagine that they have extra sets with houses on them) and you can choose what house she ends up randomly taking (just not gryffindor)

drew then executes her elaborate plan:

wear the robes as much as possible, avoid her dad as much as possible, work like she's supposed to when dean is in lessons (but tell him that she has different lessons at the same time), and then talk to dean when he has free time

whilst pretending to know what she's talking about the entire time

dean obviously eventually finds out that drew has been lying to him and that she doesn't go to hogwarts, is actually a squib, and her dad is the most disliked person on campus

he's a little disappointed, not only that she lied to him, but that she isn't actually a student there as well

i imagine that he shows her loads of magic though, once he's found out (because AWE)

please tell me that makes sense. okay good, let's move on:

the summary makes this plot sound depressing AF but it's a happy story, please make it one :)

drew has no social skills. like none. she grew up with her dad that's it. she was homeschooled, by her mum until she died, and then her dad got the job at hogwarts and she wanted to learn magic. so like make her as awkward as possible when she meets dean

drew grew up around muggles, she knows muggle things, and understands them. so does dean. he grew up thinking he was muggle-born, but he's actually a half-blood. use this as their "common ground" ─ they can talk about it

drew has no idea what the subjects at hogwarts are, so if dean ever asks what classes shes in when he wonders why he's never seen her around (i'm sure there are students in harry's year that harry doesn't know, so dean doesn't question that he's never seen drew around before, even though she claims to be in his year) drew makes up some random bullshit and says that she's "in the other classes" when he tells her what subjects he takes

title explanation: "castles in spain" is a phrase used to refer to visionary unattainable dreams

this plot may be quite complex, but i do love it, so please ask as many questions as needed
