Marilyn Ortega was infatuated by Cedric Diggory. And no, she wasn't the only one, but it is rare for a girl so young to be so possessed by someone's presence that it steals her ability to talk and breathe as if she hasn't been doing either of those things for sixteen years. Anyone would have thought she had been on a love potion for her the last five years whilst at Hogwarts, she was so attached. The only problem was, Marilyn Ortega is invisible.

Oops! But it has to be said. Even in all its High School stereotype bullshit, she was the shy girl, and he was the cool, popular jock. Yuck, that's cliche. But so tragically true. Even if Cedric was to do as much as look her way, Marilyn would go weak in the knees and swallow her tongue so not even the word "Hi!" could be available.

But that's exactly what happened on September ninth, 1993 at precisely 9:03 pm, in the Hufflepuff Common Room (yes . . . Marilyn has it logged on every calendar she owned it was that special) ─ he looked her way. He smiled as well actually. Marilyn saw him approaching the door and being the overly nice, catastrophically unsociable girl she is, held it open for him. And he smiled as thanks. He smiled. You read that right? Cedric Diggory smiled at her. What a gift from the heavens that day was. Who knew Friday night could be so heavenly? Marilyn does because that's how it all started. Soulmates, destined for love, and on that fateful night their beautiful love affair began, and the stars aligned just for─

WRONG! Marilyn accidentally (all though not so accidentally when you zoom in) created a tragic, tragic lie, which led to her being the laughing stock of the school. Because Marilyn may have just (whoopsy!) told her friend she and Cedric had shared a short but sweet kiss at midnight, and now the entire student body uses her as comedic relief. Because why would someone like him, stoop so low? He couldn't be dating her? No matter how genuine his heart is, or selfless his actions are. Hell, who even cares that he's a Hufflepuff! That doesn't mean shit!

Except maybe Cedric is a gentleman? After all, pity isn't too bad a thought when he agrees to go along with your teeny little lie . . .

nothing spesh, but okay. just another fake dating trope really

i can't explain this plot lmao, and i haven't really thought that much about it, but here we are:

basically, marilyn tells her friend that she and cedric talked at a party, which isn't quite true he just smiled at her and she got a little too excited

mar then gets asked several times after that night if she has spoken to cedric again, and she claims that she has because she likes the attention too much

her friend then latches onto the idea that mar and ced are flirting, and it blows up in mar's face because word gets out that cedric has a girlfriend

when people find out its supposedly marilyn no one believes her due to her low social status (it's shallow but true)

cedric finds out that someone claims to be dating him, and he sets out to put the lies to an end, but when he finds out it's mar, a quiet girl with a history of being bullied, cedric takes pity on her and tells people the rumours are true

mar continuously apologies and tells cedric that he can stop lying to everyone, but ced agrees to continue with the lie, just until it blows over and then they can "break up"

and well, spend all that time together . . . and they fall in love, obvs

cedric never really wanted any kind of romantic relationship at all, and that's one of the reasons that he agrees to this because it's technically not real and nowhere near as much work as a real relationship would be

marilyn is the typical shy girl: can't talk to boys, nervous around people she doesn't really talk to, does well in school, is liked by teachers, and has a few if not just one, close friend that she can really talk to without embarrassing herself

marilyn has a PHAT crush on cedric ─  that's how this whole thing comes about. she is so blown away by the fact that he just so much as smiled at her, that she gets in way over her head. she's literally infatuated so much that when her friend even suggests that she and cedric have this flirty kind of relationship thing going on, she lies because she wants it to be true so badly

she's very awkward when they are spending time together (when upholding the lie that they are dating) and cedric can't help but find it adorable

i imagine this to be like the mistake X to all the boys i've loved before

i also imagine that they lay out a set of rules so they don't cross any boundaries when fake dating

it's up to you if you want to write this if you want this to carry on into their sixth year. but if you do, i would still stick to the plotline of the book/film so cedric does become triwizard champ and it's up to you to kill him off . . .

second-hand embarrassment has to be okay for this fic to work
