Chapter 6
Lunch could not have come soon enough! Astronomy and Astrophysics class was great and all, but that class was so simple that it almost put you to sleep.
Now you were sitting with Jungkook, Jimin and Taehyung at the lunch table, picking at the plate of fries you had gotten from the cafeteria. Fidgeting in your spot, you were desperately trying to avoid joining the conversation topic Jungkook had brought up about affinities again.
That was until you felt a nudge on your shoulder.
"Hey, I'm talking to you!" Jungkook said, waving his hand in your face teasingly.
"Huh? What?" you asked, looking around and trying to play dumb.
"You were going to tell me something earlier about your parents right? What was it?" he asked, waiting for a response.
You looked up to see that both Jimin and Taehyung were staring at you, obviously curious to know the answer as well.
You cursed Jungkook in your head. Obviously he didn't know it was a secret but you really wished he had asked you when you weren't going to be overheard.
"Ah, nevermind! It's really not important. Don't worry about it!" you squeaked, waving your hand as if you were physically trying to brush away the topic.
"Oh come on, pretty please! I wanna know more about my best bunk bud!" he whined, bouncing up and down as if he was waiting for a treat.
"Yeah come on Y/N! You've got us all too interested now!" Jimin said, tilting his head and smiling at you, making your heart flutter.
You sighed in defeat.
"Well..." you started, seeing no way out of this, "my parents are kind of special."
Jungkook furrowed his eyebrows at you.
"What do you mean?" Taehyung asked, curiosity clear on his face.
"Can you guys promise this will go no further than this table?" you looked around to meet their gazes, sighing as you watched each of them nod at you in agreeance.
You took a deep breath, readying yourself for the reactions you were about to get.
"Well, you see.. my parents have two affinities." you said, trying to get the words out as quickly as possible.
"Isn't that normal?" Jimin paused.
"Wait..WHAT!?" Jungkook yelled, making you jump and causing you to smack your hand over his mouth.
A few people at the table next to you turned to look, but promptly went back to their lunches.
"Jesus Kookie, keep your voice down!" you glared at him, slowly releasing your hand from his face.
You looked over to Jimin who just looked confused, and then over to Tae, who's eyes looked like they were about to burst out of his head.
"What do you mean parents? You mean your parents don't have the same affinities?" Jimin questioned again.
"Seriously?" Taehyung craned his head to look at Jimin. "No, I think she means something else..." He continued, face unchanging from the shocked expression he was wearing before.
"Wait, then...." Jimin pondered some more.
"OMG Hyung! you're not just lacking in height, are you!"Jungkook whisper-yelled. "She means both her parents have two affinities!"
The table fell silent for a few seconds, all three boys gawking at you with their mouths hung open.
"Is it true?"
You just nodded your head, wanting the conversation to end quickly.
"How? Which ones? Why didn't you tell us before?!" Jungkook fired questions all at once, clearly not having gotten control of himself yet.
"My mother has fire and water, my father has earth and air." you responded timidly, "I don't tell anyone this. I don't really like talking about it..."
"Why not?" Jimin asked, his face looking more concerned now, "It's amazing, why would you ever hide that?"
You shrugged your shoulders. "I guess I just don't want the attention. I hate the expectation hanging over my head to have two affinities when all I want to do is be normal and get through this school in once piece. I don't want to be special." you finished, dropping your head to avoid the piercing gazes of the boys around you.
"That's ridiculous Y/N. You're going to be special even if you only get one affinity, because you're my best bunk buddy!" Jungkook gushed as he fired a heart at you.
"But I guess I understand it might feel overwhelming for you... No matter what, I'll always be here (Y/N)!" He finished, throwing his arm over your shoulder and pulling you in for a side-hug.
"Yeah it must be a lot of pressure, but don't worry, you will always have our full support!" Taehyung said from across the table, flashing you his boxy grin.
"And none of us will say anything right?" Jimin asked the two boys, meeting their gazes as they nodded to him and looked back over to you.
Smiling, you couldn't believe how understanding and kind they were about it. In the past people had always treated you totally different after finding out, or gotten mad at you saying you were stupid for hiding it.
I'm so lucky I get to spend my school life here with these amazing boys.
~
I can't believe I managed to survive another Creative Studies class...
There was just a few minutes left before class would end, and you had somehow managed to dodge performing another dance routine in front of the class. It's a good thing you had Jungkook, Jimin and Taehyung protecting you seeing as they knew just how bad you were. Instead you spent your time in class admiring the boys beautiful movements. Jungkook and Taehyung were very good dancers, but you got totally lost in watching Jimin move. It was as if you were put into a trance.
Walking in the direction of your Practical Defense Training classroom, you pulled up the sleeve of your shirt to see if the mark that Ji-hye had kindly left you was still there. The nail marks had disappeared now, but there was still remnants of a hand print spread around your wrist. Combined with the bandages still covering your hands from yesterdays' incident with Yoongi, your arm looked like a total mess. As soon as you heard Jungkooks footsteps coming from behind, you scrambled to pull the sleeve back down your wrist.
"(Y/N), what's that mark on your wrist?" A curious Jungkook asked.
"What mark? The burns from yesterday?" Trying to play dumb, you pointed towards the bandages on your hands.
"No, not those marks. The mark across your wrist that you just covered up.." He gently grabbed your arm and pulled up your sleeve to inspect your wrist.
"(Y/N).... Is someone giving you trouble?" He continued to ask, voice full of concern. "Yesterdays burns, and now this?"
"It's nothing... I promise" You mumbled out, staring around the empty corridor.
"I really hope you're not lying (Y/N). You wouldn't lie to your best friend... right?"
Your gaze shifted down at the floor as a wave of guilt came over you about this situation. Lying was never your specialty. Of course Jungkook only meant the best and you were so lucky to have such a great friend like him, but you weren't really sure how or if you should talk about what had happened.
"I'm sorry Kookie, I won't lie to you. But I promise I'm fine and you really don't need to worry about it." You spoke after moments of silence, carefully calculating the right way to use your words.
"Hmmmm... well, I really don't like this. If I see another mark on you again I promise I won't let this go. You know I'm always here, right?" Jungkook returned in the most understanding voice he was able to come up with.
"Thanks Kookie. You're the best."
"I know!" He grinned, linking your arms together and starting to tug you down the rest of the corridor.
Once you walked into the classroom, you noticed that the rest of the class seemed to have been waiting for you.
"So nice of you to join us..." The teacher spoke, tapping her foot in annoyance and pointing to the clock now just a few minutes past 3pm.
"Sorry..." Both you and Jungkook dragged out in response as you made your way to the vacant seats at the back of the classroom.
"Well class, we are still waiting on a few more students to return their waiver forms, so we won't be doing any extreme activities today. Instead, let's test everyone's fitness. Endurance and agility will prove to be very important skills to possess in most of the activities in this class. From now on, I'd like everyone to change into their fitness attire before the start of class and depending on each class's activity for the day, we will be meeting in either the Academy's gymnasium or the infirmary. I will be instructing the class where the meeting point will be at the end of each class, so pay attention!"
"Seon-saeng-nim, is it really true that a student died in this class a few years ago?" One of your classmates spoke up.
"Jae-hyun, yes it is true... But I just want everyone to know, that as long as you follow my clear instructions and don't do anything stupid, no real harm should come to you. I aim for us to work in the safest environment possible, however to prepare you for the real world we must be realistic. I'll be honest with all of you. This will be tough and this will challenge you. I ask for everyone to give me their full cooperation, and then I can promise that the same mistake from the past will not happen again to one of you."
The whole class stared in silence at your fearless professor after she finished her speech.
"Now class!" She clapped her hands to snap everyone back into reality. "We don't have enough time to waste with changing into your fitness attire today. I want everyone out on the field in 5 minutes and we will run through some quick fitness drills before the end of the day."
The whole class grunted and groaned at her instructions, slowly shuffling out of the classroom.
On your way to the field, you oversaw some bright flashes coming from inside another classroom. You slowly peeked your head through the door and noticed Yoongi was practicing his fire affinity skills, weaving a surge of fire around his body.
He's really in his own element. You chuckled to yourself at the stupid pun that had just entered your head.
You suddenly got that feeling of being watched, and your gaze shifted across the room to find Ji-hye glaring at you. Pulling your head back out of the door as quickly as you could to avoid another confrontation, you ran down the corridor catching up with Jungkook.
The rest of class did not seem enjoyable to you at all, but at least there was only another 20 minutes left before the end of the day.
*Yoongi's POV*
The number one objective for Yoongi's elemental training class today was to ensure that he had total control over his affinity. After yesterday's mistake, he wasn't willing to let slip again. Even though (Y/N) tried to brush it off and was very kind about it, he still was unable to forget the look of fear and pain in her beautiful eyes.
As Yoongi began to practice his textbook moves, slowly and carefully weaving the flames around his body, his concentration suddenly broke at the mention of (Y/N)'s name, making his perfect stream of fire vanish into air.
"I can't believe the nerve of that girl, looking at my Yoongi like that. Who does she even think she is!" Ji-Hye spat, obviously talking much louder than she thought. "Do I need to teach her another lesson?"
"I don't know. Her wrist looked pretty red and painful when you were done with her in the bathroom earlier. Surely she isn't that stupid?" Her friend giggled.
"WHAT did you say...?" Before he even realised what he was doing, Yoongi had got up and walked directly to Ji-hye at the other side of the room, their noses almost touching. Breathing heavily and squeezing his hands into fists he asked again. "I said. What the hell did you just say!?"
"Ohh nothing. She was only joking" Ji-hye yelped trying to cover-up with a big smile.
"If you lay a single finger on her.....!" Yoongi's words burning out of his mouth, pointing his hand up in Ji-hye's face. "I will make you pay for it."
Gently wrapping her hand around his outstretched finger and moving their hands beneath and away from her face, she replied "Oppa, I promise it's all just a big misunderstanding!" Her smile was now stretching wider across her face.
Yoongi didn't believe Ji-hye for a second, but he also didn't know all of the details. Still huffing, he snatched his hand from out of her grasp, knocking Ji-hye off her balance and trudged back towards the corner of the classroom that he came from.
*(Y/N)'s POV*
Your Practical Defensive Training class had finally come to an end. You completely lost count of the amount of laps you had to run around the school grounds. Making your way back to the boys dormitory with Jungkook, grateful that you could soon put your body at rest. You noticed two other figures approach you along the way. It was Namjoon and Hoseok.
Hoseok was beaming his solar smile at you. This boy was actually the embodiment of the sun, and it seemed almost too perfect that his affinity would be spirit. Up until now, you hadn't had many opportunities to get to know him, but his presence always made you feel calm. You now locked your eyes onto Namjoon, the first boy who had accepted you into the dorm. Looking down to find the same wand holster attached to his belt as before, it reminded you that there was definitely more than one side to Namjoon, which made him very peculiar.
As the group was approaching the boys dormitory, you reached into your bag to find your set of keys, readying yourself to open up the door when you felt a hand being placed on your shoulder.
"No need, (Y/N)" Namjoon grinned, as his other hand reached down to grasp his fake wand.
He waved his hand in the direction of the boys dormitory and a gust of wind flew down the empty corridor bursting the door wide open. The blast of wind was so powerful that it had rebounded back at you, making a complete mess of your hair. Jungkook was trying his best to untangle some of your hair for you, tucking your hair back behind your ears as you tried to find your breath.
"Yah! Namjoon! Stop using your affinity on the doors! Do you know how many locks we replaced last year because of you?!" Hoseok pouted. "Stop trying to show off! And don't even get me started on that damn wand!"He spun around to look at you, mouthing you an apology.
"Sorry Hoseok. Sorry (Y/N). I just can't contain myself sometimes!" placing his wand back into the make-shift holder. "I'm sure you'll be the same Jungkookie, once you get your air affinity!" He was now gleaming at Jungkook.
You noticed that Jungkooks smile had quickly disappeared, remembering what he told you earlier today. Everyone was kind of expecting him to have an affinity for air because of his parents. Nodding your head as acceptance to Namjoon's apology, the group continued to walk in the direction of the boy's dorm in silence.
~
Not too long after making yourself comfortable in front of the TV in the common room, Taehyung and Jimin walked into the room, being the last to come back to the dorm this evening. Looking up, you met Jimin's eyes as he walked across the room and instantly felt your cheeks burning. You quickly looked back at the TV hoping he hadn't noticed how awkward you acted, not noticing Taehyung who was now seated next to you.
"Hey (Y/N), what are you watching?" Taehynung asked, waving his hand infront of your face.
"Hey Taehyung, nothing important. I'm just trying to kill time since Jin won't let me in the kitchen until dinner is ready... W-why is your hair wet?" You asked, now staring at him.
"I just finished practice at the swimming club with Jimin!" The boy sang, bearing a boxy smile.
"Ohh... I honestly had no idea the school had a swimming club" You mumbled, rubbing the back of your neck.
"Of course it does! And when we get our water affinity soon, practice will be even better!" Taehyung returned.
"Yah! Just because both of your parents have a water affinity, doesn't mean you will too!" Jungkook yelled out from the bedroom, before turning back around and slamming the door shut.
"What's up with him?" Taehyung muttered under his breath.
You got up from your seat to go and check on Jungkook in the bedroom. Ever since Namjoon made that comment about his affinity, Jungkook was clearly upset.
"Jungkookie, do you want to talk about it?" You asked the boy who had rolled himself up into a burrito of blankets on his bottom bunk bed.
"There's nothing to talk about, (Y/N). I'm just sick of everyone shoving their expectations on me to have a dumb affinity that I feel in no way connected to!" He huffed. "Now I totally understand what you meant when you said you don't want others to know about your parents affinities."
You sat down beside him and placed your hand over his shoulder. "I know... but whatever happens at the ceremony, we will get through it together. I promise! Your happiness is more important than some dumb element anyways!"
"Wow. That was really lame" he started laughing, showing you his first smile for this whole evening. "Thanks (Y/N)."
