Chapter 22

As you drew closer to the Fire Affinity classroom, you could feel your breath growing short.

You were thankful that Yoongi was walking beside you, otherwise you would have already turned around and ran for the hills.

He must have picked up on your uneven breaths, as his grip on your wrist suddenly tightened, pulling you in closer to him.

"There's nothing to be nervous about," he whispered, his raspy voice sending a warm feeling of comfort through you.

Nodding your head, you took one last deep breath before Yoongi opened the door and swiftly pulled you in behind him.

Up until now, you had only seen this room once before from a small crack in the door, but had never dared step foot inside.

You remembered seeing Yoongi practicing his advanced fire affinity techniques in this same room only a week ago, but you had never even imagined you would find your way back here, like this.

Your eyes slowly examined the details of the room as you took a step inside, noting a number of desks set up to the right and a large empty space to the left.

I guess there's no turning back now...

Your eyes scanned the room as you entered, noting almost immediately that the room was  fitted with fire-proof floors and walls, unlike many of your other classrooms.

The elegantly lined black-as-night marble flooring that merged effortlessly into the tall grey stone walls made a nice change from the antique wooden hallways of the school.

As your eyes wandered upwards, you noticed the abundance of air ventilators attached to the high ceilings, you smirked slightly as you imagined the many accidents that must have happened here that probably almost set the school on fire.

Following Yoongi over to a pair of vacant desks, you timidly sat down beside him.

You sent him a nervous smile, praying your blushing face wouldn't deceive you and set your bag  on the desk in front of you, hoping you could use it like a protective shield and hide from the rest of the class behind it.

Please let this hour be over and done with already...

"Well, look who it is," sneered Ji-hye as she suddenly sauntered into the classroom, giggling annoyingly with one of her minions, Min-ji. "I still can't believe my mother agreed to let a nasty foreigner like you join the advanced class..."

"I'm sure the principal only did this for our amusement, so we can watch her suffer! It's not like she could possibly keep up with us," chimed in Min-ji, with an annoying screech.

"Knock it off, Ji-hye."

The raspy voice of the boy sat beside you cut through the air like a knife, instantly stopping the annoying giggles that were coming from the girls now seated behind you.

Not daring to turn around to face them, you could already feel the intensity of their glares burning through the back of your head and it felt like you were now just one wrong move away from them using their fire affinities to burn something else instead.

Wow, off to a brilliant start.

I better still have a full head of hair by the end of this...

"Knock what off, Yoongi Oppa?" Ji-hye quickly adjusted her voice to that of an innocent high-pitched whine.

By this point the entire class was silent, closely paying attention to this daring exchange that was coming from behind you.

Without a word more, Yoongi casually draped his arm around your shoulder for the rest of the class to see, the room now erupting with whistling cat-calls from his blatant display of protection.

Great...

Let's just attract more attention to ourselves..

This is exactly what I wanted.

You could feel your face turning red as your eyes remained glued to your desk, the bag laid out in front of you proving to be completely useless for hiding behind now.

But even through all the stares, you felt overwhelmingly grateful that Yoongi was right there beside you.

Even if he did have a bad habit of showing public displays of affection....

You heard the girl scoff in disgust behind you, making you roll your eyes at the thought of having to endure her for an entire semester, knowing full well you couldn't avoid her while being in two of the same classes AND having to join her nasty fem-club.

"Alright class, welcome back! I hope everyone had a nice weekend!"

The cheery voice of the Fire Affinity professor rang throughout the noisy classroom, making you smile slightly at her unexpected bubbly aura.

"Oh my! I almost forgot!" The professor suddenly said, stopping in her tracks as she met your eyes, "How humbling that our class has been blessed with the presence of this young lady!"

You could feel your cheeks burn once more as the professor pointed in your direction.

"Everyone, please welcome our newest student, Y/N!"

The class broke out into the saddest excuse of applause you'd ever heard, making you wish you had the skills to burn your own ears off already.

"Yeah, how honored we all are" Ji-Hye sneered sarcastically behind you, sounding as if she had leaned over her desk to whisper it in your ear.

Yoongi broke his statuesque stance to glare slightly over his shoulder, instantly confirming your suspicions.

"For us to even learn that the legend of the Elemental Enchantress is true is certainly fascinating to say the least, but to chance across one in our life-time and at this very school is simply the highlight of my career! I hope we can all send our best wishes for Y/N's journey in discovering and mastering all of her Affinities!"

A second round of applause broke out throughout the classroom, a little more pathetic than the last, with the only driving force not making you curl up and die from embarrassment being the small satisfaction of knowing just how desperate Ji-Hye must be to receive this kind of attention.

"Y/N, dear, I must get a look at your marks!" The professor exclaimed, trotting over to your desk enthusiastically.

You gritted your teeth as you pulled up the sleeve of your shirt, presenting to her your unique collection of all five Affinity marks, it's strange silvery outline sparkling even under the florescent lighting of the classroom.

"My my, enchanting indeed!" The professor cooed, fixing her spectacles further up her nose to inspect your marks, "Thank you for showing me your magnificent and blessed gift!"

You rolled your sleeve back down, slumping further down into your seat as the professor strode back to the center of the room.

"May I ask if you have tried out your new Affinity for fire yet, Y/N?" The professor asked curiously.

You hesitated, realizing that you hadn't really tried to use any of them yet, only accidentally using spirit once.

And now that the idea was pressed upon you, you couldn't believe you hadn't tried them sooner...

"No, she hasn't," Yoongi's voice interjected, answering her question for you, cutting off your mind babble and seemingly annoying the professor all at once.

"I see... and how about your roommates, is it only our Yoongi that possesses the Affinity for Fire?" She continued.

"Y-"

"Just me." Yoongi cut you off once more, answering yet another question for you.

Jeez, let a girl talk!

"Mr. Min, would you please let your girlfriend speak for herself?" The professor snapped, tapping her foot in slight irritation.

You heard the boy huff beside you, the background noises of whistles and cat-calls flooding the room once again with the perfect potion for embarrassment.

"Alright, alright, settle down now class! Let's pair off into our groups and begin with some standard breathing exercises before continuing on with the advanced set. Y/N, I'll have you join Yoongi and Ji-hye's group for today!"

Not a word more and Yoongi had already grabbed you by the wrist, reassuringly pulling you up from your seat and directing you over to an empty space in the classroom.

You could hear the clacking of Ji-Hye's heels following along behind, triggering what must have been your hundredth eye-roll for the day.

After a few minutes of taking timed breaths, following along after the professor, she promptly instructed everyone to begin their advanced studies.

You nervously turned your attention back to your unfortunate group pairings.

"Ugh, lets just get this over with, okay?" Ji-Hye sneered, "I don't feel like babysitting today."

"No one asked you to. I think I can take care of my own girlfriend Ji-Hye," Yoongi snapped back with a deadpanned expression, without even hesitating.

That's the second time Yoongi has told Ji-Hye I was his girlfriend...

Is this his way of protecting me?

You couldn't tell if the nervous knot in your stomach meant you liked it or not.

"Whatever," She snapped, crossing her arms and rolling her eyes.

You watched on as Yoongi grabbed a candle from one of the class's storage cupboards, bringing it back over and holding it out to you.

"Alright, lets start out slow. Try to light this with your Affinity bond," Yoongi instructed softly, smiling his gummy smile at you in encouragement.

You tried your best to swallow the nervous lump in your throat, your eyes sneaking a peak over at Ji-Hye, desperately hoping that she wasn't watching.

Thankfully, the girl in question was now perched on top of the nearest desk, filing her nails and paying zero attention.

You took another deep breath, the anxiety that her presence usually caused dwindling as you closed your eyes, trying to think about your Affinity.

"-Woah! Y/N!"

Yoongi's sudden surprised-filled tone had you opening your eyes immediately.

The candle that was unlit only a millisecond ago was now flickering wildly, a few inches high above the wick.

Did I just do that?

"That was really fast for a beginner... Are you sure you haven't been practicing?" He questioned, snuffing out the flame with his thumb and forefinger.

"Like you said, not at all," You smirked, a new feeling of confidence suddenly taking over.

But the slow sarcastic clap that was now coming from Ji-Hye immediately ruined your mood.

"Wooow, she lit a candle, how impressive," She snickered, clearly entertained by the fact you were miles behind her skill set.

Where she may have intended for it to bother you, it did nearly the opposite.

Because now you had something to prove.

And you were going to make her eat her words.

You looked back at Yoongi, with determination now clear on your face.

"Challenge me," You demanded, shifting on your feet as you prepared yourself for your next task.

"That's my girl," Yoongi smirked, whipping his palm up to your eye level and producing a brilliant orb of fire.

You smiled at the boy, feeling your body heat up from the connection you felt with the element hovering before you.

"Take it from me," He challenged, stepping back slightly, providing more space for you.

Without hesitation you brought your palm up in front of you, eyeing the orb like you could speak to it with your mind.

Okay, I can do this.

Just take it from him!

...

Come to me!

You nearly jumped at the velocity to which the orb flung itself towards you, pulsing slightly from the energy you must have added into it.

Wow... that felt amazing!

"Hell yeah!" Yoongi said excitedly, walking up to stand close to you again, "You're amazing! A true natural!"

You heard the sound of heels on the marble before you saw Ji-Hye, now standing between yourself and Yoongi, eyeing you with an anger you had never seen before.

"You think that's something to clap at?" She spat through gritted teeth. "Then watch and learn from the best!"

You stepped back as Ji-Hye expertly swung her arms over her head, producing a larger ball of flames, flinging it out in front of her as she narrowed her eyes.

You watched on as the ball of flames shot sparks into the air, the deafening sound of exploding fireworks filling your ears as they morphed into intricate shapes.

She strained herself further, her hands balling into fists as she furrowed her brows, until the fireworks became larger, brighter and much more colorful.

It was impressive.

And it made you angry.

Your eyes flickered over to Yoongi, who seemed completely unbothered by the performance going on before him.

She claims she is the best, but I bet Yoongi would beat the crap out of her skills...

As soon as she had decided she was done, the fireworks and the flames dispersed, Ji-Hye stepping back and curtsying to the small crowd of nearby students that came to spectate.

You crossed your arms instead of joining the applause that was now erupting all around you, clenching your jaw to keep from yelling something at her for being such a damn show off.

"Beat that" She sneered cruelly, sitting on the desk beside you before crossing her legs as if it took nothing out of her to perform the advanced move.

Wanting a front row seat to your failure no doubt.

You frowned, gathering your concentration so you could wipe the floor with her attitude.

That's it, I'm not letting her beat me anymore.

You brought your hands up in front of you, manifesting a small flame.

You could hear the sarcastic snort of the girl next to you, clearly amused by your apparent lack of skill.

The anger that washed over you fed into the flame in your hands, you smiled as it grew twice as large as the one Ji-Hye had produced just moments earlier.

You flung your hands out, using the power and connection to tell the orb where to go.

Hovering before you, almost dead center of where you, Yoongi and Ji-Hye were, you honed in on it.

You could feel your hands start to shake from the sheer intensity of energy flowing through you, your veins feeling like they were set on fire but not once making you feel uncomfortable.

You felt powerful, so insanely powerful.

"Y/N! Stop!" You could hear the faint calls from Yoongi on the other side of the orb, barely audible from your deep concentration.

No, I need this, I need to do this!

I can do this!

As the power coursing through your body built up to it's tipping point, you knew it was ready.

NOW!

As you let go, nothing could have prepared you for what would happen next.

You had tried to manifest an explosion of fireworks, but the energy that exploded from the orb you created was beyond anything you could have ever imagined.

All at once the large flame covered your eyesight, exploding outwards and upwards and filling the space between the three of you with a brilliant white light.

The explosion you created would have burned to a crisp and blew the ear drums off anyone without a Fire Affinity.

You stumbled backwards slightly as the fire flung back into your palms, mimicking that of a vacuum as an air ventilator from directly above where the orb was came crashing down onto the marble floor.

Your vision blurred as you felt something hit you, a body, somebody pushing you out of the way of impact.

Screams filled the room, but none as shrill as that of Ji-Hye, which now that you had regained your sight and looked over, was curled in on herself.

You sat up, pushing Yoongi off of you as you watched on in horror.

"SHE BURNED ME, MY HANDS, THEY BURN!" She screamed, tears starting to fall down her face as the professor and several other students ran over to her.

"Oh my god" You breathed, your hand slapping over your mouth as you took in the sight before you.

I did this

How did I do this?

Your vision blurred as your own tears started to well up in your eyes, the professor turning to look at you wide eyed as if you were an anomaly.

You felt arms wrap around you, Yoongi's breath brushing against your ear.

"Its okay, she's fine Y/N. She has a fire affinity. She can't burn that badly," he assured. "Your power.... it's amazing."

The last coherent thing you could remember was the worried expression of the professor as she brought Ji-Hye to her feet, and in the direction of the infirmary.

Fear.

A look of fear.
