Chapter 17
You had been sat nervously fiddling with the ends of your hair for over half an hour now, watching mindlessly as girl after girl went up to receive their elements.
"Kim Chan-hee, you have been blessed with the Element Air, congratulations"
You mindlessly clapped along with the rest of the school, your nerves spiking again as you watched Ji-Hye reach into the Chalice for the next name.
Please not me, please not me!
"Y/N L/N"
You name being called rendering you almost catatonic, a buzzing in your ears appearing as a consequence of the now crippling anxiety.
Jungkook tapping your shoulder to get your attention barely registered to you as you stared straight ahead.
"Y/N! Y/N it's your turn!" He whispered urgently to you.
You felt a hand lace through yours, the contact instantly sending a cold shiver up your spine.
"You can do this Y/N!" Jimin's cheery voice came from somewhere a little too close to your ear.
Still having not moved even an inch you suddenly felt Jungkook stand up from beside you, reaching down to hook his arms around you so he could forcibly pull you to your feet.
"Up we go Y/N!" He cooed at you, zero strain in his voice from picking you up.
He really is just a big muscly baby
The amusing thought thankfully sparked a bit of life back into you.
As soon as Jungkook let you go so he could push you out of the row you shakily grasped onto the back of the bench in front of you, desperately trying to regain your balance.
"I can do this, I can do this" You whispered to yourself, inaudible to everyone except Jungkook apparently.
"Yes you can! Now go!" He cheered, voice barely above a whisper as he pushed you out into the aisle, "Love you bunk bud!"
You gulped loudly as you stared straight ahead towards the platform stairs, slowly shuffling towards them.
This is it
My worst fears coming to life
Please just give me one normal element, please don't make a scene.
As soon as you ascended the stairs your vision started to blur, the anxiety now peaking at a dangerous level.
You froze in place just before the Altar circle, staring at the Elemental Candles as if they were about to attack you.
Oh my god.
I can't do this!
You must have paused for an ungodly amount of time, but it was unclear to you in the moment.
You felt a light breeze whip around you suddenly, a whisper following it.
"You can do this Y/N! We're with you!"
Namjoon's voice startling you slightly as you whipped your head to look out into the audience.
Sure enough there they were.
Yoongi, Jin, Hoseok and Namjoon all stood up in their row, flashing you various motions of encouragement.
Your lips twitched into the ghost of a smile, the support alleviating some of the pressure.
You watched as Hoseok brought his hands in front of him, forming a small growling purple orb, and directing it to you.
The orb vanished as quickly as it had appeared just as you felt a wave of calm rush over you.
He sent his spirit to me...
I really don't deserve these boys.
You took a deep breath, steadying yourself before turning back to the altar.
In the corner of your eye, you caught a glimpse of the principal, motioning for you to start walking.
With some of the anxiety lifted, you began your walk.
You nervously shuffled around the circle staring at each candle you passed in fear, stopping again just before your second lap.
After another deep breath, you started again, this time a little slower.
As you passed by each Candle for the second time you could swear you felt some kind of energy calling to you, it's origin completely unknown to you, but its presence undeniable.
As you approached the end of your second lap you slowed down even more for the third and final lap.
This is it.
...
What if I don't get an Element at all?!
...
Oh god please give me something!!
The third lap seemed to take forever as you paused slightly at each stand, staring at the wick of it's candle as if you could light it with your mind.
The energy you felt from before was increasing in power as you came to a stop at the end of your final lap.
Nothing...
I got nothing...
What the hell??
You felt your eyes tear up just as you heard snickers from behind you, not even needing to turn your head to know it was Ji-Hye and her witch bi*ches.
This is so humiliating...
Just as you were about to turn and walk off stage the principal's voice stopped you.
"Dear! Why don't you step onto the moonstone, perhaps that will ignite your Element."
You nodded weakly, turning and stepping reluctantly into the center circle.
You stood there for a moment, eyes glued to the ground, completely hating yourself as each second passed by.
The girl with double-Affinity parents has no Element at all.
I'm a world class joke.
Not even a moment after your negative thoughts, you felt the unknown energy spike in power, making your whole body vibrate like you had just been electrocuted.
You whipped your head up just in time to see Air ignite into a beautiful flame.
Wow..
I got Air!
Before you had time to process, Earth's candle ignited after it, followed by the rest of the Elements until you were surrounded by five brightly lit candles.
The flame on Spirit's candle threw itself so far up into the air you thought it was going to set the entire Temple on fire.
You shook your head back and forth in hopes of waking up from this sudden nightmare, cursing to yourself as you did so.
"What the actual fu-"
You heard the gasps before you realized what was happening, making your words catch in your throat.
Where there used to be brilliant flames adorning all of the candles, there was now 5 coloured glowing orbs hovering in their place.
All at once the Elemental orbs vibrated violently, blurring from their momentum before suddenly flinging themselves into the circle to surround you.
They swirled around your body with blinding speed, blending together as one before they started weaving themselves in and out of your body.
The sensation of energy coursing through you making your heart beat wildly in your chest.
Your sensitivity to your surroundings was now blocked out entirely, you were so in tune with your own mind and body at this moment that you could almost hear the sound of your own blood flow.
But where you should have been scared you were more at peace than ever, a giant contradiction with the energy piercing your skin with serenity and adrenaline through every pass.
The powerful wind from the whirlpool of Elemental energy made your clothes ripple around your body and your hair lift off your shoulders.
Before you could register what was happening, all at once you felt your feet lift from the ground as if you were suddenly weightless, like the elements themselves had picked you up from the Altar.
You kept your eyes open as your head lulled backwards, a pulsing magic starting to form in your chest, accompanied by the feeling of an overwhelming amount of power surging through your veins like an electric current.
You could have sworn you felt your soul being altered right then and there.
All at once a light shot up at you from the circular moonstone slab, surrounding you completely in a blinding white luminescence.
Pain seared your right forearm like someone had set it alight, the sensation not causing you to wince at the pain, but rather making you relish in it.
Your feet slowly touched the ground once more, your knees buckling slightly from the sudden weight.
As you regained your balance, the Elemental orbs finally dissolved into your skin, the wind dying down only after the brilliant light slowly returned to where it had come from.
You felt an undeniable strong energy coursing it's way through you, your heart thumping louder than ever in your ears.
You hesitated before lifting your right arm, already knowing what you were about to see.
Sure enough there they were.
Five alchemical symbols branded into your skin, a deep black center and a sparking silver outline that glistened under the moonlight now pouring in from the glass skylight above you.
About two things you were now absolutely certain;
-The Temple's night sky enchantment had been broken.
-And you were now an Elemental Enchantress.
The setting in which you were surrounded by suddenly making you remember that you were still stood in front of an entire audience; an audience who had just witnessed the entire ordeal.
You kept your gaze down as your senses returned, a bleak realization hitting you that the room was filled with a deafening silence, making you almost too scared to look up.
Moments later and you had decided it was now or never, you slowly lifted your eyes to meet that of your fellow students and teachers.
Your vision was suddenly crowded with a glimpse of wide eyed and shocked faces, some had their hands brought to their face in utter awestruck and the teachers were giving you an undeniably dumbfounded and confused look.
The panic was now settling in.
The overwhelming scene playing out before you and the staggering amount of power still surging through your body made your vision start to blur again.
You went to step forward with the intention of sprinting out of the temple, the urge to run and hide being irresistible at this point.
But before you could take your second step, blackness clouded your vision, a hard surface smacking into your body and the sound of horrified gasps being the last thing you remembered as you gave into the darkness.
---
"That was crazy! I've never seen or heard of anything like that in my whole life!"
You woke up to the sound of a familiar voice echoing past the pain in your head.
"Right, Jimin? Who'd have thought, my best bunk bud is an Elemental Enchantress?!"
It didn't take a genius to realize who was talking, and you definitely didn't need to open your eyes to know for sure.
"I always knew there was something special about her..." A deeper voice suddenly spoke who you could only guess belonged to Taehyung.
"Keep your f**king voices down!" a raspy voice suddenly piped up. "She's clearly freaking the f**k out. Do her a favour and keep your mouths shut why don't you!"
At the sound of Yoongi's voice, your eyes fluttered open to an unfamiliar room.
Your head was still spinning and it took you a moment to recall the events that lead up to now.
You suddenly shot up from the bed you were laid across, frantically looking around at the boys who were surrounding you in the room.
Am I in the infirmary?
What the f**k!
Please PLEASE tell me all of that was just a dream!
"Where the hell am I? What the hell happened?!" Your panic filled voice broke the silence in the room.
Each of the boys expressions changed, trying to figure out what kind of magic words they could come up with to calm you down.
"You uh- well, you kind of fainted," Hoseok spoke with a soothing voice, sitting beside you on the infirmary's bed. "Jungkook had to carry you out of the ceremony and they had to take a small intermission to repair the Temple's Night Sky Enchantment.
You could sense that he was trying his best to alter your emotions to get rid of the anxiety that was taking a hold of you.
Unfortunately, unknown to you at the time, your new Affinity for Spirit seemed to make his influence on you a lot less potent.
"(Y/N), do you remember what happened at the Elemental Ceremony?" Yoongi's concerned voice came next, sitting on the other side of the bed, his warmth instantly transferring to you.
"I uh-, I remember Jimin and Tae got their Water Affinities ... a-and Jungkook got his Earth Affinity?" You answered, slightly unsure of your own answer.
"That's good, but do you remember what happened after that?" Taehyung spoke, scrunching his face up slightly out of worry.
"Uhhh- no. There's no way. It can't be real... I'm just going crazy" you whispered, trying to push the absurd thought out of your head.
"What can't be real, (Y/N)?" Jimin's soft voice spoke next, picking up and gently stroking your hand.
Your eyes darted down at your entangled fingers in shock, instantly noticing the foreign item of clothing which was now wrapped around you.
A suit jacket a little too big for you, which one of the boys must have draped around you in your passed out state.
Looking around the room and noting that Yoongi was the only one without a jacket the mystery was quickly solved.
Out of no where, a slight burning sting came from the back of your wrist.
You broke your contact with Jimin, bringing your arm in closer to you, slowly pulling back the sleeve of the suit jacket.
Your breath quickly left you, as your eyes focused on the 5 alchemical symbols that now adorned your wrist, confirming your greatest fear.
Oh no...
"(Y/N), I know this must come as a huge shock to you.... I mean, to us as well! No one's ever heard of anything like this before in all of existence!-"
"Well by all means Joonie, let's go and scare her half to death," Jin snapped, interrupting Namjoon's over-excited ramble.
"No matter what happens, I promise we're with you all the way for this. All we need to do is take it one small step at a time." Hoseok's soothing voice came once more.
Focusing all of your energy, you took a deep breath. A wave of calmness instantly washing over you.
Woah...Is this what it's like to have an affinity for Spirit?
That makes handling my crippling anxiety so much easier.
You took another deep breath in and out, composing yourself before staring back up at the 7 boys that were still surrounding you.
"So what do we do now?" you finally spoke, your voice slightly strained from trying to contain yourself so hard.
"Well, you've been out for a couple of hours now. The Elemental Ceremony has probably finished," Yoongi spoke beside you as he checked the time on his rolex. "If we leave now, we might make it in time for the rest of the Celestial Ritual."
Just like that, everyone got up to pile out of the infirmary and make their way back to the temple, however when you tried to shift weight onto your feet, your legs instantly gave out.
You stuck your hands out in front of you to catch onto anything within reaching distance and that's when you felt arms wrap around you, completely stopping you from your fall.
Looking up, you met the eyes of your saviour and instantly felt your body temperature rise at the sudden shock.
Of course it had to be Jimin...
Why does he always catch me like this...
The group of boys decided that it was probably best you didn't walk to the temple, given it was on the complete opposite side of the school grounds. Your Bunk Bud instantly volunteering to carry you there on his back instead.
After a good fifteen minute walk you had finally arrived at the door to the Temple, Jungkook pausing to let you down gently, linking his arm with yours so you could balance yourself.
Shakily straightening yourself up you looked over at your bunk bud who hadn't even broken a sweat.
Typical...
"Thanks Kookie," you muttered to the muscly baby who was gleaming down at you.
"I'm always here to catch my bunk bud when she falls," he cooed in response, making you cringe slightly at the cheesiness.
Before you could get out what would have been a lame attempt of a comeback, the rest of the boys caught up with you, knocking you out of your thoughts.
Deciding to sneak in through the back entrance of the Temple to not make another scene, you strained to hear the faint sound of drums rumbling through the heavy doors.
The Celestial Ritual was supposedly being hosted by Ji-hye and the Charmed Enchantress Society.
You didn't have one of these at your old school and despite who was hosting, you couldn't help but feel slightly curious.
Jungkook had told you the other day that a Ritual happens twice a month at the school at the hands of Ji-Hye's group but you hadn't put two and two together until now.
On second thought this could be terrible and traumatizing.
Wouldn't put it past her..
You involuntarily groaned at the thought of having to face her again as the boys opened the back door.
As soon as you got a clear view through temple doors you quickly realized it was beyond anything you could have come up with in your head.
A constant tribal drum beat pounded through the entire temple, echoing off the walls and somehow making the room appear much larger than what it was.
The lights were now dimmed so low that it almost made you feel uncomfortable, not having the slightest clue of what was going on.
The temple was filled with smoke, an incense of what you could only assume was sage clouding up your already dulled senses.
You followed the boys quickly into a row and sat down, fanning yourself with your hand in a desperate attempt to waft the powerful smoke away from your face.
Suddenly a light shot up in the centre of the temple, piercing through the repaired sky-light and sending a shock wave of heat outwards to everyone in the audience.
You wiped the beads of sweat that were quickly forming on your forehead as you watched on, noticing the girl who was now stood in the middle of the moonstone.
It was Ji-hye. Of course it was.
And you weren't surprised in her change of attire either.
The thin bits of cloth draping off her body, only barely covering all the necessary parts of her chest, tying around her back in a knot as if she was trying to convert the whole school with her... lack of cleavage.
Sometimes less is more.
But then again, not always...
She slunk around the raised platform in the most cringy and whorish display imaginable, panting loudly with the beat to catch her breath in the warm, moist air.
Soon she was surrounded by her Society girls, or 'Witch Bi*ches' as you'd come to know them, all equally dressed to make anyone in the near vicinity feel second hand embarrassment.
What is this?
A f**king burlesque show?!
You looked around at the rest of the audience, to gauge just how everyone else was dealing with the uncomfortable display that was going on before them.
Although you couldn't quite confirm if anyone had thrown up in their seats, you still recognised a lot of horrified faces.
Varying looks of shock, disgust and guilty faces trying to look away from the sights before them like they feared they were committing some kind of crime.
Where do you even buy clothes that small?
Baby Gap?
Despite the urge to look away, you watched on as Ji-hye snaked in and out of the Elemental candles, her body twisting and hips moving as if it was more of a strip show.
As she continued to move, the circle of Society girls closed in around her, humming a chant in unison.
You couldn't understand exactly what language they were speaking in, but if Ji-hye was behind it, she probably found her inspiration off some lame reality TV show that hasn't learned the definition of cultural appropriation yet.
One by one, she set light to the five candles and you could feel a tingling burn on the back of your wrist almost as if each of the elements were calling out to you, reminding you of their presence.
Your eyes lulled back as if you were put under a slight trance from your new-found connection to the elements, each imprinting themselves into your mind and blocking out the world around you.
You felt your body relax as you let your new connection completely take over your senses.
The deafening sound of drums were blocked out by the flowing sound of water, as the smell of sage was quickly replaced with wafts of freshly mown grass and burning embers.
A cool breeze suddenly whipped around you, providing some relief to the otherwise smoldering room.
Bringing your hands up in front of your face, you eyes focused on the purple haze that was lifting up from the pores of your skin, dancing in the air around it.
Your shoulder was suddenly nudged, jolting you out of your trance and sending you back into the real world once more.
Looking to your side, your vision was filled with the all too familiar toothy smile of your best bunk bud, looking like he'd just witnessed you go completely insane.
Readjusting yourself back into your surroundings, you shook your head slightly and sent Jungkook an embarrassed smile, before focusing your eyes back onto the spectacle in the centre of the moonstone.
Ji-Hye was basically grinding the air as she made one last lap around the circle, hair swinging around her body and sticking to her sweat soaked skin.
One by one she blew out the candles, the Society girls chanting thank yous in Latin to the departing elements as she did her round.
Jesus Christ, it's like I'm at a Gentleman's Club...
"I swear if she swings around one of those candle stands I'm going to hurl" you finally let out, hoping to lighten the mood.
Jungkook let out a loud snort from your snarky remark, earning him some nasty looks from a group of third year boys sat in front, who seemed to be enjoying the show a little too much.
Just as the beat to the constant drumming started to pick up, the music came to a sudden halt. The lights flickering on suddenly, making everyone in the audience hiss as their eyes struggled to adjust.
The school principal made her way to the platform, standing in front of the group of girls who were seemingly disappointed at being cut short from completing the final act to their performance.
She awkwardly cleared her throat before letting out a loud and authoritative voice that carried across the temple.
"Thank you Ji-hye and the Charmed Enchantress Society for such an- enticing Celestial Ritual performance." She spoke, sending the flicker of a look of disdain back at her daughter before continuing on with her speech.
"With the events of this years Elemental Ceremony, we appear to have run slightly overtime this afternoon. Closing off from today's Celestial Ritual, everyone may return to your dorms to change and freshen up before the banquet begins this evening."
Thank f**kin God...
I was beginning to worry about the fact I didn't bring any dollar bills to throw...
