Chapter 24: Sleep Next to You
26 December
Sarah called me in the morning to tell me that she couldn't make it to the job. I was not angry at her at all rather I was greatful. I knew she had her own problems going on but she was still helping me.
I couldn't cancel the practice so I went to his home in the morning with an intention to meet his grandma too but she was already taken back in the hospital.
'What happened?'
'She felt unconscious. She needed ventilator.' Ryan explained as he sat on the couch and huffed. The sadness weaved in his every step as he was so excited for her.
'She'll be just fine,' I placed my hand on his, 'believe me, when you'll return to her with your The Forbes Champion trophy, her all sickness would fly away.'
A small smile crept up on his lips. 'Thank you.' He squeezed my hand and smiled further more as he ran his finger on the bracelet I was wearing that was gifted by him. 'You are wearing it.'
'I will always.' I said.
We practiced for two hours until I had to go to work and he had to go check on his grandma.
27 December
We had to cancel the practice for the need for him to stay at the hospital arrived.
I came back to my house from work. 'Hey.' I greeted Ian who was in kitchen cooking, perhaps, his Deluxe Pasta.
He looked behind at me and smiled. 'Hi.'
'How are you?' I settled on the bar stool with the counter placing my backpack on the chair beside it.
'Perfect.' He put the bowl of pasta in front of me with a folk beside it. 'Taste it. It's with new recipe.'
'Yeah,' I was not hungry. 'I wanted to talk to you.'
'I'm listening.' He opened the fridge door and took out a can of coke.
'No, sit with me.' I urged and he did, in front of.
'Yes.'
'What is going on?'
'I cooked pasta for you and am offering you coke. Wanna have some?' He put forward the can but I refused.
'I'm serious.'
'So am I.' He said. 'It is a coke. I swear.'
'Ian.' I warned. 'If we won't talk, we won't be able to work out.'
'What to work out?' He happily glided the bowl in front of him and with the can, stood up. 'We're fine. I need to go play some game.'
'Aren't you're writing anymore?'
'I am having a very bad writer's block.'
Before I could utter one more word, he left. I sighed and looked around in the house, looked up at Ian's door, tapped my finger on the counter top and then left to hospital to help Ryan.
When I reached there, it occurred to me that perhaps my decision was right. It was 8 o'clock and Ryan and his grandfather was waiting in the waiting room. I bought some sandwiches for them on my way here. Ryan was tapping away on his phone when he lifted up his eyes to look at me.
He smiled at me once I sit next to him.
I took the sandwiches out and presented to us grandfather. 'How is she?' I asked.
He looked up and I depicted the sadness in his blue eyes. 'She is fine kid. Don't you worry.' He accepted the sandwich and took a huge bite out of it.
'You should go home sir—'
'—James.' He corrected.
'James.' I confirmed. 'You should go. I and Ryan got it from here.'
He looked at Ryan and then at me. 'Are you sure?'
'Positive.' I said.
He nodded. 'Thank you for being with us.'
'It's my pleasure.' I beamed. He ruffled my hair and went out. I stood up from the couch and settled next to Ryan.
'She'll be fine.' I placed my hand in his and he intertwined his fingers immediately as he bobbed his head slightly.
'Thank you for coming here.' Ryan said and I couldn't feel proud enough on my decision.
28 December
We couldn't practice that day for Ryan had to go to practice for his performance we just planned. At that day, I decided to make Ian talk to me but Ian simply dodged me and went out.
29 December
We practiced like hell. He asked me to come to his home in the morning if possible so I did.
No school. No work. So we practiced all day.
Taking a break for half hour after consecutive three hours, I drank two cups of coffee to keep my mind and my body refreshed. The intro was done. The outro was done. Only the chorus was left that I wanted to be perfect since Ryan told me that KB, a famous vocalist and world-wide adorned singer, who had won three Grammys and sang all her life, would be there too.
Nerve cracking, I know.
'Listen,' I stopped Ryan. 'Go slow here.'
He tried again. It was good but not perfect so we practiced and practiced and practiced.
At midnight, I was beyond devastated. Even my throat was ragged but after all this practice, I slightly understood Ryan's ability and his style. And this was the reason I had him choose this song.
30 December
'Stop that shit.' I swore in my sleep as my hands hunted for the source of alarm and then they landed on something hard. I traced the thing to get a faint idea of what was beside me.
'It tickles.' Someone said.
'Does it?' I didn't even know whom I was talking to cause in my dream, it was a cat I was caressing but when I concentrated hard enough, my eyes shot up. I tugged myself up.
'Good morning, sunshine.' Ryan leaned in and kissed me right beneath my ear. He was lying right beside me on his side with his hand underneath his head and his other hand twirling a strand of my hair. His hair were messy but they weren't bed-messy, they were Ryan-messy while his face gleamed in the sunlight. He looked so fresh, so beautiful that staring at him for hours feigned too little.
'What are you doing here?' I asked him as I rolled on the other side to face him.
'To get my sleepy Âme up for we need to leave like,' he looked at his watch, 'in one hour.'
'Leave for what?' I asked. I was so sleepy.
'Well, we have been preparing for like a singing contest that is supposed to be occurring today.' He smelled so good.
'You said one hour right?' I repeated.
He nodded. 'Okay then,' I snuggled in his chest. 'Wake me up in twenty.'
He was till twirling with my hair but now his hand was caressing the side of my face. 'You need to get up. I won't let you skip the breakfast.'
I pulled up my covers up to my face. 'Just twenty.'
'Ten.'
'Twenty.'
'Fifteen.' He said.
'Done.' And I closed my eyes in the aura that was just hypnotising. He didn't care about his black shirt whether I would destroy its iron rather he let me sleep while his fingers played with my hair. I didn't want to get up.
And his heartbeat said the same.
oOo
