24: Partners

A/N: PART 2 OF A DOUBLE UPDATE: MAKE SURE YOU DIDN'T MISS THE LAST CHAPTER

Harry was fast asleep Sunday night when an earth shattering boom woke him. His eyes flashed open, and he bolted out of bed, wand in hand. He frantically looked around the room, searching for the threat.

Draco and Blaise were up a couple seconds later, looking around in confusion. But Harry was moving now, and Auror training had kicked in, it shaped how he crossed the room to check the bathroom, and cross back over to the door of the dorm.

"Harry?" Draco asked.

Harry didn't hear him. He cracked the door to their dorm open, and looked out, wand ready.

"Harry." Draco said, louder, and took a hold of his shoulders. Harry's eyes locked onto his, and Draco understood the look in his emerald eyes. Draco pulled him further inside, and kicked the door closed.

"What was-"

"You need to stay here. You aren't thinking clearly." Draco said. "I'm going to go find out what happened."

"No-"

"Harry, for Merlin's sake, you're trying to use your wand." Draco hissed. "Stay here."

"What- No, I'm not staying here, what if-" Harry protested.

"Just stay here! Blaise, make sure he stays." Draco ordered, before tugging on shoes.

Harry held up a palm, and silvery blue mist coalesced into a stag. He whispered something, and then the stag took off, running through the door, out of sight.

"Was that just- Was that a wandless patronus?" Blaise asked.

"Yes, it was." Draco said. "Keep him here, Blaise. I'll be back."

"Draco-" Harry protested.

Draco leaned in close to Harry's ear and hissed. "Unless this is something that's happened before, just stay here."

Harry didn't reply, and Draco slipped out the door into a hallway of confused students. He sat still for half a minute, and then stood to pace the length of the room.

Blaise watched in confusion. Why was Harry reacting like this? Clearly Draco understood why. And then- a wandless patronus. The kind of skill that would require... And Harry wasn't really in his best mind at the moment to boot. Just what was going on?

Right as Harry was about to go out after Draco, a silver cat bounded into the room. "Everything is fine. It would seem that someone set off an explosion sound with an advanced Sonorus charm." McGonagall's voice got quieter. "My personal guess is that it was set to distract from mischief elsewhere. Everyone is fine, there is no danger."

Harry nodded. He sat down on his bed, and set his head in hands. He focused on breathing, on steadying his rapid heartbeat.

"I didn't know you could produce a patronus." Blaise said.

"I- I learned in third year." Harry said.

"Really?" Blaise asked.

"Yeah. Because of the dementors."

"Is it as tricky to cast as people say?"

"Depends on the person, I think. The hardest part for me was finding a happy enough memory."

"Oh. You know, that's really depressing, actually." Blaise said.

"It's okay. I've made happier memories since then."

"That's good, then."

Harry nodded.

Draco walked back in not much later than that. "Harry, everything's fine, it was just-"

"A Sonorus." Harry said. "McGonagall told me."

"Oh." Draco said. "Ah, sent you back another patronus?"

Harry nodded.

"Okay, but can we point out that her patronus is literally herself?" Blaise said. "I've seen her as an animagus, and that cat looked just like her."

Harry chuckled. "She's McGonagall. She doesn't need anyone else."

Blaise made a 'you have a point' face, and nodded. "That is true."

"Anyway, I'd like to get back to sleep." Draco said.

"Yeah, that sounds good." Blaise agreed.

~~~
Harry's sleep had been restless, when he'd actually managed to reach unconsciousness. So Monday morning was not pleasant. At least, until he was headed for his first period class.
One moment it was just a boring Monday morning, in which many students were sleep deprived, at least, more than normal. The next was like an odd ripple effect- a buzz of confusion and excitement spread from student to student. Harry noticed charmed origami messages zooming through the airspace above the students' heads.
Harry, Draco and Blaise were about to begin asking their own questions when a student trotted right up to Blaise.
"Did you hear?" Nimue Archer asked, a huge grin on her face.
"Hear what?" Blaise asked.
"Somebody trashed Professor Umbridge's classroom!" Nimue cheered, her blue eyes bright, and her blonde hair falling into her face.
"Wait, really?" Harry asked.
"Yeah! Apparently last night, that big boom was a distraction! The boom itself wasn't a prank!" Nimue's grin was infectious.
"Did anyone get caught?" Blaise asked.
"Nope. I mean, we can all take a guess, but, technically, the culprits are anonymous. No evidence." Nimue said.
"Absolutely tragic." Draco said.
"I know, right? It's so awful." Nimue agreed. "Oh, I'm Nimue Archer, by the way."
"Nice to meet you." Harry said pleasantly. Or you know, nice to have an actual reason to know your name, Harry thought. "Weren't you Hufflepuff? How're you adjusting?"
"Oh. Surprised you noticed. Uh, yeah, I'm doing fine. The Ravenclaws don't care too much, a few of us Badgers got stuffed in there. It seems like everybody as a collective has decided to like, adopt the house transfers." Nimue said, and then gestured to Harry, standing between Draco and Blaise. "I mean, look at you. It's like we've all decided without saying anything that we're just gonna get along to spite the Ministry."
Harry couldn't help it, he laughed. To his left, Draco snorted. It took Harry a second to realize it was because Draco had received one of the flying messages.
"What?" Blaise asked him.
"It would appear," Draco said, "That the gravity in her office has been reversed, and the objects within it refuse to be touched by anything- like reverse magnetism? Also, there's a huge Umbridge doll that spouts distorted quotes in her voice, informing the real Umbridge of the spells she ought to use to defend herself against the charmed bludgers. I believe the bludgers also require different spells for each one- as if the individual bludgers were representing offensive spells."
"Oh my Merlin that is amazing." Blaise said. Nimue laughed loudly. Harry grinned widely, unashamed.
"Oh, and would you look at that. The message concludes with: It would be wise for this information to remain private, as shared with only a few individuals such as staff, prefects, and the head boy and girl, so that some order may be maintained among the student body. However, should the unfortunate instance occur that this knowledge becomes common, it is understandable- and that the only ones to blame are the ingenious culprits who, regrettably, remain anonymous." Draco smirked, "Signed, Dumbledore."
By the time students made it to their first period classes, the staff had decided that the best course of action would be to give the students the day off to rest and work on schoolwork. Meanwhile, the majority of the staff would try to assess what had been done to the classroom, and begin to recover it.
~~~

"Harry?"

"Hm?"

"What memory did you use for the patronus?" Draco asked.

"Teddy." Harry said, a soft smile on his face. "Calling me Ree-ree. It's the closest he can get to Harry."

Draco smiled. It wasn't something you often thought of someone, but Draco was sure that Harry would make an excellent father. "Can you... Can you teach me the Patronus Charm?"

Harry nodded. "I can teach you, but the hardest part for me was the memory. Fair warning."

"Alright."

~~~
Draco figured it out sooner than Harry expected: He didn't have a corporeal form yet, but it was getting close. That was a lot of progress for the first day.
"This room is remarkable." Draco commented.
"Yeah. It's done so much..." Harry trailed off.
Draco recognized the far off look in his eyes, and decided that ought to be enough for the day. So they went back to their dorm, and finished up some remaining bits of homework.
~~~

It was the first session of the D.A. Harry was a bit relieved that it still kept the same name- That saved him from a great deal of confusion.

Harry had partnered up with Neville while they were practicing Expelliarmus. Harry watched Neville carefully, trying to find out a way to help him. He knew Neville wasn't a weak wizard...

Harry kept an eye on the magic around the room. For a moment he was startled- but he realized he could spot the concentration of magic within their bodies. He had to focus a little on that when they weren't actively casting, but he could see it if he tried.

Throughout the course of the evening, Harry analyzed this aspect. He would walk around the room and give out pointers when needed. But then he came back to Neville- He was the one who needed the most help.

Harry frowned as he watched Neville. Harry saw the concentration of his magic in his hands. Most of the students had an even distribution of magic. Neville, however... Well, it was lopsided. There was a far higher concentration in his left hand.

"Neville," Harry asked, "When you were younger, were you left handed?"

Neville blinked in surprise. "What? Well, yeah, when I was really little. But then I learned to use my right hand like everybody else. Why?"

"Just... Humor me for a minute. Try using your wand in your left hand." Harry suggested.

Neville frowned, but tried it anyway.

"Get comfortable holding your wand, then try to disarm me." Harry said. "On your own time."

Neville adjusted his grip, and as Harry focused, he could see the magic in Neville's hand begin to react to his wand. Harry hoped that was a good sign.

Neville looked up at Harry. "Expelliarmus!"

Harry's wand bounced out of his hand, and he barely caught it before it fell to the ground. Harry grinned up at Neville. The spell hadn't been very strong, but it had worked.

"Did you see that?" Neville asked.

"Well done, Neville!" Harry beamed. "C'mon, try again!"

A few of the other members had stopped to watch, but Neville hadn't noticed. Though still smiling in bewilderment, he set his gaze on Harry, and tried again.

This time Harry's wand flew a few feet to the side. As Neville's jaw dropped in surprise, the other members cheered. Neville looked around at everyone grinning at his success, at the proud looks, and congratulatory pats on his back- and the closest thing he could remember was when he faced his boggart in third year.

The cheers died down, but the grins didn't. Harry turned to Neville. "Do you think you're up to partnering with someone else?"

Neville thought for a moment, and then nodded. "Yeah... Yeah." A small smile grew on his face as Hannah waved him over to partner with her.

~~~
The D.A. meetings were going very well, and Harry could see it uplifting their spirits that they were doing it under Umbridge's nose. The familiar weight of the enchanted Galleon in his pocket was comforting.
Quidditch season unfortunately halted some of the D.A. meetings. It couldn't be helped though, so Harry didn't fight it. He wasn't on a team himself, but Draco had convinced him to come watch Slytherin practice.
"Oi, Potter." Flint called out to Harry, who was sitting in the stands, and minding his own business- for the most part.
"Yeah?" Harry replied.
"Get your broom out. Malfoy needs someone to Seek against."
"Er-"
"Unless you've forgotten to fly, get on with it." Flint said and left, turning back to his own team.
Harry looked over to Draco, who just shrugged. Harry retrieved his broom, and joined the team in the air.
"You don't look too eager." Draco said lowly to Harry, as they hovered some distance away from the rest of the team who were talking formations.
"The last time I played I was a bit bigger. My weight is different and I'm using a different broom to boot. I'm going to be clumsy." Harry grumbled.
"Well, you are getting to a healthier weight." Draco said.
"Yeah, but I'm still several inches too short." Harry said.
"Oh?"
"Yeah. I want my inches back. I'm too short."
Draco had to cover his mouth to hold back a laugh. "You do realize you have hit a growth spurt, right?"
"I have?"
"Yes."
"How'd you know?"
"Because I've hit one, and you're keeping up."
"Oh." Harry said. "Well then."
"You are the most oblivious person I've ever met."
Harry shrugged.
The Snitch was released and the Seeker partners took off after it. Harry was more focused on getting used to flying on a broom again. He feinted a few times, and that annoyed Draco. Then Draco turned the tables on him, and they were both feinting every so often.
It was entirely off-putting to not know when the other was feinting and when they really were taking a dive for the Snitch. You really had to take a moment to try and spot what they were going for.
In the end, Harry barely won. He spotted the Snitch, and feinted in a different direction. Draco had followed him, and Harry had carefully let Draco overtake him, before falling back and flying in the right direction.
"Neat trick." Draco grumbled.
"But now you know it." Harry replied.
~~~

That night, Harry dreamed of the Department of Mysteries. Something was different, something was wrong. But Harry couldn't tell what. And that made him more worried. But he had time to figure it out...

A/N

More cuteness! I hope it holds you off until I come back...

Thanks for sticking around :)
