♜: Thirty- Six Demons
Levi never knew an anger so intense and hurtful until he met Petra again.
If the fires of hell had the form of a human, it would without a doubt be her. Although Levi no longer wanted to be affiliated with her, there were still moments in his days where he would mindlessly wonder where the old Petra had disappeared to. He may be a vampire, but his way of thinking was still very similar of a human's. It seemed that he remembered memories more vividly of people who hurt him. He could not grasp how Petra was so... cantankerous, because Levi used to think she must have been an angel in her past life if reincarnation even existed in this world. He thought that maybe if he chased after her after she bit him, none of this would have happened. Or if he hadn't been so selfish by forcefully staying by Eren's side, he wouldn't be a target of hers. In other words, he was guessing that this whole vile rampage of Petra was all his doing. Although he dragged a lot of people into tons of trouble, he was goin to take responsibility for it. In some ways, he did not regret some of his choices. He had been so unhappy for a very long time that he just snapped and wanted to change it. Now that he found the sun of his life, he was going to do anything to protect it. He did not wish to live in darkness again, a world without him would be unbearably painful.
Then again, he was used to being hurt. It would be highly unpleasant, but he was no stranger to emotional pain.
"Levi," a voice rung into his ears like warm honey.
"Yes?"
"I love you."
"I love you too. You're not saying that because you think we're going to die and therefor you want me to know that you love me before that happens, right?" Levi asked.
"Of course not," Eren said truthfully. "You told me I'm okay as long as I'm with you, correct?"
"I'm proud of you for being so positive in a dark time like this," Levi told him and displayed a mournful grin. "But you know, it could still hapen. We may be vampires and we live forever but that doesn't mean we can't die."
"I'm serious, Levi," Eren told him firmly. Levi thought he was only staying positive to cheer him up, but when he looked up he could see the sincerity in his eyes.
Levi didn't have to respine, mainly because he didn't know what to reply with. He nodded instead and offered him another sad smile, the kind of smile he would show to injured animals on the brink of death. But Eren was not an injured animal, he was a wilting rose.
Out of the blue, a loud screech broke into the air like violent thunder making the two waiting vampires spring into defensive mode. The screech belonged to a vampire, but it sounded so human, even at the face of death did vampires sound a lot like humans again, because the pain must have been so hard to handle that they would show their weaker side. Whatever it was, it must be very terrifying.
Eren and Levi turned just in time to see another vampire with daggers as eyes leaping at them with incredible speed. Levi expertly and swiftly knocked Eren to the ground to avoid the potential chance of him getting hurt and shilded him with his own body as he released a low animalistic growl deep wihtin his parched throat and leaped forward to attack without any sign of warning. His tough hands went straight for the intruder's throat and buried his nails as hard as he could muster. Eren dashed to Levi's aid and grabbed at the vampire's torso and without even thinking of what would happen, started to pull him apart like a tree being freed from the earth's rich soil. Eren never knew it would be so easy, so simple to take an individual's life like it was nothing. The enemy's lower half was severed from the top half, and it wasn't too difficult to do. Eren was afraid; not of the blood and the guts pouring out like a waterfall of disturbing death, but at himself.
"Nice work," Levi commented casually.
Eren glanced down at his trembling hands, smeared in sticky, dark blood that did not belong to him and shivered uncontrollably. He did not feel any ounce of remorse, because he knew things could have ended badly if he did not assist Levi.
"It's okay, Eren," Levi told him as if reading his mind. "Those are one of the bad ones, the rotten kind of entities that the world does not need."
"Will I get used to this?" Eren asked uselessly. He was not looking for an answer in particular.
"Unfortunately yes. We will all need to get used to doing bad things in our lives if it's drastically necessary." Levi lowered his gaze as he wiped the blood away in pure disgust by using his cloak. "I never did get used to the gross mess violence usually creates, though."
"Well, you better get used to it soon, Levi, because it appears that there is way more where that came from," Eren half mumbled under his breath as he shot a side glance to the entrance of the camp, where more vampires were casually strolling in like they were stopping by for biscuits and tea and not to kill anyone. They were all stunning, and it was one of the first things Eren had always noticed about the semi-dead pale creatures. They were always so beautiful no matter what they did. They were all devils hiding in the bodies of angels and creeping behind the face of a saint.
"Eren, try not to lose me, alright? Stay with me," Levi said with panic seaping into his voice like a leak.
"Of course I will. After everything that occured between the two of us, do you really think I'd so something so stupidly simple like lose you in a crowd? No way," Eren told him confidently and nudged him with his elbow gently as he let out a low whistle. "Getting me to like you was hard, wasn't it? So losing me will be even harder."
---
When Eren was younger he always wanted to grow up to be a strong and clever man who protected the town from vampires, but he never did imagine that he had to kill a large amount of them in such a short amount of time. He never did picture in his little head that he would have to drive blessed daggers into the hearts of blood- thirsty vampires, or to crush their skulls as easily as snapping a puny twig. He got one thing he wanted, which was to be strong; he had never felt so powerful before. It was as if whatever god above had blessed him himself.
Although he knew he was only killing off the bad guys, he felt like such a monster. The kind of monster he warned himself to stay awway from.
Much to his horror, he was not hesitating as he reached for their limbs and tore them away like bloody chunks of meat. He did not pause or flinch as the crimson blood sprayed like a gory firework. His body buzzed with profound energy as he and Levi moved through a crowd of Petra's goons like a scyth cutting at grass. He could no longer tell which blood stains on his shirt belonged to him, making him a living and walking canvas of the colour red. People around him were dying. The individuals whom he had trained alongside with were slowly dropping like flies, and it was a haunting feeling seeing someone who used to breathe and talk and exist was now nothing but an empty, rotting shell. Although he was not very close to some of them, a sadness so deeply rooted and gloomy was punctured into his non- beating heart like a caustic poison. He was being controlled by a frenzy of dark excitement.
His nails were no longer trimmed and proper, but long and sharp like daggers with blood under them. Everything about him could be used a weapon and trap; his eyes being beautifully enchanting like a flower's as if humans were bees, his voice charming and alluring like music and his mouth being the most dangerous of all.
"Eren," Levi's voice called out to him frantically and in a hurry. "You don't need to kill anyone your eyes spot, we need to find Petra. She's the real big problem."
"Can you smell her? I don't know what she smells like," Eren asked him as he wiped his hands free from most of the blood using his pants.
"She's near the exit of the camp, just where the edge is. I think she has a few other vampires with her. She always prefers not to play fair, huh."
"I can tell," Eren said quietly as he made his way to Levi's side. "You're not hurt or anything, are you?"
Levi shook his head and raised his hand to get rid of the stains off his lover's face, only to have it smudged and smeared across his cheek. "Just a few scratches. They don't bother me too much. How about you? I really hope you're not." He proceeded to sweetly caress Eren's cheek.
"I'm okay. I'm just worried about what will happen when we find her. She's pretty strong, I don't know if I'm even capable of fighting her."
"You can do it. There's the two of us now, so we'll be able to take her down if you have confidence in yourself. She's no different from the rest, she just has more experience."
"You really think so?"
Levi rested his hand on Eren's shoulder and gave a short nod. "Of course. Follow me. It's better to locate her soon so that she won't kill any more of our allies."
"You have a point. Let's go."
The atmosphere and feeling between the two of them. They were both very exhausted but too heavy- hearted to admit it, they had gone through too much and now a stronger connection had formed between the two of them. Levi felt like he could do whatever he wanted without second- guessing himself first. Eren was like a support beam for him, a guardian angel. His body was in a state between feeling numb and light as he stepped forward, following the scent of someone he had wanted to forget.
---
Her heels were stained with crusty blood and her painted finger nails with dirt, but she still looked as heavenly as ever. Eren could feel Levi stiffen up as they slowly approached her with caution, his eyes narrowing and on alert. She greeted their unwelcomed presence with a cocky grin as she crossed her arms and tilted to head to the side in a teasing manner. She wore a red silk dress to her knees that hugged her delicate body like fire, matching the red shade of her piercing gaze. Much to their surprise, she was all by herself. There was no sight of any other vampire near by, and Eren couldn't smell anyone else either. He began to get suspicious and a little uneasy.
"I've been waiting for you," she cooed.
"Don't you always? You can't leave me alone, can you?" Levi asked her sarcastically and rubbed at his temples as if trying to banish some non-existant headache.
Her grin was erased from her lips and she began to glower in anger. "That's because you leave me no choice. You don't cooperate even though I've been very kind about it, but you still crawl back to him. You really leave me no choice."
"You've had countless chances to murder Eren and I, but you haven't really made big move to do it until now. It makes me really question your decisions. You're not like this, Petra. You always act like you're all big and might when you're really not. You're all bark but no bite," Levi sneered at her.
Petra kept her cool as she started to examine her nails and her face contorted with disgust as she tried to scrape the dirt away. Without looking up, she spoke again. "Oh, honey. You will really regret saying that. I've got bite, you just haven't seen it yet."
Just as she finished her sentence, Eren was caught off guard and knocked off his feet and into the air by the foot. He screamed in terror and confusion as he struggled to see what had grabbed him only to realize that there was nothing. A tight grip and pressure was grasping his ankle, but he could not see it all. For a few brief moments he was sure that he must be hallucinating. Petra was eyeing him from below with a psychotic grimace written on her face. Levi was staring at him with bewilderment and fear as he watched Erne dangle several feet above the ground by some unseen force.
"What is this?" Levi demanded loudly as he glared at Petra. "What are you doing?"
"An ability of mine. Surely you know that you aren't the only one blessed with rare powers," she said with a small snicker. "Now I can finally elimate him while you watch. What perfect timing."
"Petra, no," Levi started as she made a mad dash toward Petra and shoved her aggressively down onto the rough and parch soil. She smiled up at him as Eren was smashed onto the earth like a rag doll, face first. Levi gasped aloud and turned toward her with furrowed brows.
"Whatever you're doing, stop it immeditely," Levi commanded through gritted teeth. He could hear Eren groan in pain from a few feet away, but it was enough to make his heart sink.
"No way. That wouldn't be any fun at all, now would it?"
Eren was then repeatedly raised up into the air and slapped down. His limbs slowly when limp as Levi could do nothing but watch. He was just about to latch his nails and teeth onto her neck when he knocked off of her. He rolled gracefully into a kneeling position and made another attempt to dive toward her, but was pushed back by (possibly) the same invisible force.
"Stop it," Levi repeated, begging at this point. "It's me you want, not me. Hurt me but please don't hurt him."
"That's exactly what I'm doing. I'm hurting you through him. You see, love is such a blessing and a wonderful gift to this world but it's also very lethal if used correctly. Anyone can use it to hurt someone, and that is what I'm doing right now," she explained as Eren was flung against a tree. His back made contact with the bark but seconds later the tree toppled over from such a strong impact. Eren lay unmoving on the ground, his face bruised and bloodied like the day he was bitten. Levi's heart was screaming.
"Enough!" Levi shrieked at her.
Petra did not respond. Instead, she let out a laugh so demonic and cold that it made Levi shudder. It didn't sound quite right, as if she was not right in the head. But then again, was Petra ever sane?
