♘: Thirty- Nine Eyes

Surprisingly, it had been a rather quiet night despite the death and violence that was triggered during the day. Eren found that it was always quiet after such an ordeal occurred; no whimpering or crying of sorrow from the deaths witnessed, because soldiers were not supposed to show any signs of weakness. Before Erwin had taken control over the army, Eren remembered hearing that soldiers were like brainless robots who were sent off to train, fight and then die if they did bit survive, and repeat. Although Eren found Erwin to be quite the shady and suspicious type of man, he agreed with most of his morals. 'If you're going to end up dying, at least do it with a reason or purpose. You don't want to be remembered for dying, but for what you had done.'

Eren found himself in the first aid tent without meaning to go there. His feet had dragged him there as if trying to tell him something. Much to his realization, he found that a couple of his good friends had passed away. In the back where no lanterns or candles shown light were the unmoving lumps and empty shells of people who had been alive just hours before. The bloodied clothes and strewn needles across the bedside tables showed effort in trying to keep them alive until further help arrive, but Eren could see that they did not succeed. The bodies were covered in thin blankets, and then jackets the further he traveled down the aisles of cadavers, indicating that there been much more bodies than they were expecting that the supply of thin blankets had run out. The blankets and jackets covered their faces, or their gruesome wounds.

A number of them had their necks covered, probably because vampires favoured beheading as a suitable way of killing. Eren was surprised that they were able to retrieve most of the heads. Some of the bodies had their whole head, of where they would have been, covered and Eren knew why. Above the beds were scribbled notes with their names, age, measurements, time of death and how they died. Eren squinted to read one that belonged to Connie, his abdomen covered with the blood drenched jacket he once wore. He had died from being disembowelled, a cruel way to die even if he was annoying. He did not deserve this, Eren thought. No one did.

Next to him was Sasha, who had one leg and arm ferociously torn off. Eren could smell the blood was still continued to slowly drip from her shoulder and thigh. Her jacket was placed across her chest. On the crudely written paper above her it read that she died from blood loss. There was no possibly way she was going to survive and Eren felt as if he could have stopped this. He continued to walk from there and spotted Krista's petite frame of a body with a blanket thrown over it with blood leaking heavily from multiple areas that Eren did want to bother reading how she died. In front of her was an empty bed, or what Eren thought was empty until he approached it. Sitting atop a jacket was a single bruised and beaten arm, elbow and everything. Specks of purple and yellow were beginning to blossom like flowers in a grotesque garden. Through the paper Eren discovered that it had belonged to Ymir. In quick and messy handwriting it explained that as Krista was dying she refused to calm down until she saw Ymir, and the arm was what they brought back. They were able to identify it through the many scars and moles upon her bicep.

Although becoming a vampire had made him less emotional, he felt sick to the core. He turned to run out of the tent, feeling his stomach churn and his throat wanting to vomit contents that were not present, he was only going to release bile. The cold air slapped him across the face and his insides twisted with anger. Even though he was much stronger compared to when he was human, he was not strong enough to save his friends. He was not enough.

Hurling himself down to the ground, he threw up. Acid burned his throat and set his mouth aflame as it dribbled from his lips and down his chin.

"Eren? Eren! What's the matter?" Levi shouted from behind him and immediately was at his side before he could even answer.

"'m not feeling so good, is all," he replied with a huff.

"And why is that?"

"The... tent. I saw my... friends," Eren answered, trying to catch a breath that would not come for him.

"Oh, Eren," Levi said with genuine sympathy. "I apologize that you had to see that."

"I suppose I'm not surprised. Now that I can live forever, there's probably more where that came from," Eren told him glumly and wiped the corner of his burning lips with his sleeve.

Levi shook his head sadly. "Get up, my love. Let's get you cleaned up. You look like shit."

"Thanks," Eren said sarcastically yet weakly.

Levi held on to his arm and heaved him up easily but before they would even go anywhere, Jean jogged toward then with a look of urgency in his face. He was waving his arms around as if trying to stop them before they could blast away.

"Hanji is in need of your assistance," he said, trying to catch his breath and clearly out of shape. Eren almost couldn't believe he was the only one who survived among his group of friends. "She's in the research tent. She's a bit out of shape and she's acting funny too but I think you'll be able to help with that as well."

"Sure, after I get Eren cleaned-"

"No, it's alright. I'm not too unclean."

"How were you able to talk to Hanji without having your neck bitten off?" Levi asked with wonder.

"Oh..." Jean trailed off. "Well, you see, she uh, chained herself to a pole within the tent and claimed it would be best for everyone if she stayed like that for a while."

Levi rubbed his chin in thought. "I see. Well, let's get going then."

Before Eren could answer, Levi was already gone.

When Jean said Hanji was chained up, he really wasn't lying. She had one foot attached to thick and rusty looking chain, which was sprouting from an unknown source underground. Because of this, she wasn't able to move more than a few feet away from her desk, where she was seated. Her vibrant ruby eyes were pouring over a heavily paged book, her fingers skimming through pages and she mumbled some of its words to herself.

Levi was already seated in front of her and gestured for Eren to do the same the minute he arrived. He sat down with him and raised a curious eyebrow at Hanji.

"Tell me, how does one kill vampires without them ever coming back?" she questioned, her eyes never rising from the books in front of her.

"You decapitate them," Levi answered simply.

"Eren, what is your ability?"

"I can, uh, go into the bodies of others," he replied.

"How did you kill Petra when you were inhabiting her body?"

"I stabbed myself- well I mean, her."

"And where did you stab her?" Hanji demanded.

"The stomach."

"Did she die?"

"Well yeah. Or at least I'm assuming she is because she didn't wake up after that."

"And you two claim that you could not find her body after that?" Hanji was looking at them now, eyes wide and eyebrows knitted together in concern.

"Yes," Levi answered for Eren.

"That settles it then. She's not actually dead," Hanji concluded and slammed her book shut. "She must have pretended to be dead and then vanished when the two of you went someplace else. She's still alive."

Levi's eyes grew bigger like saucers, and slowly he sank into his seat with a big sigh and a frown written on his face. He hid his face in his bruised hands and mumbled every swear imaginable.

"I should have known. How idiotic of me; I've been a vampire for a few hundred years now and I let something so simple to remember slip through my mind-"

"Yes, but if I really did behead her while in her body, I wasn't sure what would happen," Eren cut him off. "If I did, maybe I would have killed her and myself as well. And to start with, you said you didn't actually want to kill her."

"Yeah, well now I do because she is such a nuisance," Levi continued on. "She's like a flea."

"We can still get her," Hanji told them, her chains dragging against the dirt as she moved.

"Okay but one question; how? She's too smart to be lured in, and it's too dangerous to go out to her, especially since we have so many dead," Eren explained with a small frown building up on his lips.

"Dot told me he wants to wait, and I haven't heard a word from Hannes and Nanaba ever since they discovered I turned... so we don't have much support right now. There's nothing we can really do except wait, but I'm afraid she might take advantage of this and attack. We may have eliminated a large portion of her followers, be there's still plenty of them left," Hanji went on with a look of hopeless despair.

Levi set a hand on Eren's thigh and let out a sigh. His nose scrunched up in thought before he spoke.

"I'll go find her. I won't need backup."

"Levi, are you even sane right now?" was what Eren replied with. "You're strong but you do realize that she is also very powerful and her abilities are highly useful. It's a fifty fifty chance you will survive. No offence."

"None taken. Even if I die, the aftermath will be the same as when I don't attempt to do anything at all. I have to try."

"I'm obviously going to come with you," Eren declared and stood up as if to prove his point.

"No you will not," Levi growled. "But the reason for that is because-"

"Because you don't want me to be hurt. I know. You've told me the same damn thing at least twenty times, but I can handle it Levi. It's not that I think you won't be able to handle Petra in your own, but I know that having some help won't kill you. Please. Please let me do this. The moment I met you, Petra has been my business, and I can't just walk out of it. I really do want to assist you," Eren interrupted sharply.

"Eren..."

"You have your cool abilities like transferring your memories to others or being able to summon your large wings and healing people with your tears, but with my ability we can really use it to our advantage," Eren went on.

Hanji straightened her glasses and rested her elbows on the desk tiredly.
"Look, I don't know much about vampires and I had no idea they would have abilities but Eren sounds like he has a point. You two work very well together, and I've seen it with my two eyes. I personally think it would be best, if you do end up going after her, if you two fought alongside each other."

Eren nodded his head aggressively. "We can fly to her, Levi."

"But I don't like using my wings unless for emergencies, and I haven't used them in a while. We can just track her down-"

"But if you fly, I have a feeling it would be harder for her to find and attack you since you would be up in the air," Hanji said.

"I suppose you have a point," Levi admitted with defeat. "We'll fly."

"We?" Eren asked with disbelief, surprised to realize that Levi was going to let him tag along after all.

"Well of course I agree since you constantly pester me about it," Levi said, annoyed. He pinched Eren's cheek almost angrily. "Should we leave as soon as possible?"

"I highly suggest it." Hanji nodded solemnly.

"That settles it," Levi said and lifted himself up from his seat. He reached for something into the pocket of trousers and retrieved a tiny glass bottle filled with dark red liquid and tossed it to Hanji. "It's not too much, but it would last about a day. It's animal blood, and if you need any more you can always tell your cadets to go find a deer and kill it."

"Thank you," Hanji told him with a small before ripping cork off and dumping the contents of the bottle into her waiting and thirsty mouth. She proceeded to toss the empty bottle somewhere behind her, resulting in it breaking and making a faint crackling noise to fill the tent.

Levi and Eren swiftly left the tent, leaving the newborn to study more about the species she had just turned into. Levi turned toward Eren and gently placed his hands on his shoulders and sighed.

"I'm scared," he told him.

"What could you possibly be scared of? You're strong, and many people fear you," said Eren with a grin.

"I'm scared... of losing you. I know you're smart, Eren, and you're so skilled at fighting but I can't help but think that there will be a small sliver of a moment where you won't be able to handle it. So please, try your hardest. I don't want to lose you, because I've already experienced what my life could have been if you weren't in it-"

Levi wasn't paying attention when Eren grasped his arms and pulled him forward to attack his mouth with multiple kisses, shutting him immediately.

"You've already say something like that. I know, okay?"

"I just wanted to remind you," Levi mumbled. "Take me seriously."

"I am," Eren replied and placed another soft kiss upon his nose before playfully punching his arm. "I won't let her kill me."

"Just stay close to me," Levi advised.

"Yes, Sir."
