♔: Ninth Promise
(AN: there's a small part that may be triggering to some individuals. i'll leave a warning before it.)
Levi was constantly pestering Eren into seeing the sun set with him for the past few hours, which he obliged after a long while. Eren was on his side with his elbow propped up on the bed to support his own weight while Levi was leaning over the once gaping wound and spilling his tears onto it as it slowly began to close shut like a burlap sack. The boy noticed how the tears looked a little misty and white- almost like droplets of milk sprinkled into water. They seemed to sparkle just a bit, too. They also reminded Eren of morning dew sliding down grass stalks after a long and rainy night.
The pain in his torso felt cold and numb and stingy, like when your hand or leg fall asleep. Eren didn't even know why he was still in Levi's house. He just watched his own sister get brutally butchered to death and he was somewhat calm about all of this. He wanted to panic and get angry, but he couldn't; it was like there was something in his brain and heart that was cooling him down, a wall or some sort of barrier that was blocking all those negative emotions. In some weird sense, he was grateful. Feeling sad was not fun at all.
He flinched when he felt a cold hand run down the side of his torso and clicked his tongue.
"The sun will set soon, and it's closed now," Levi told him as his fingers lightly grazed the scarred skin. "I know where the best view is."
Without speaking another word, he grasped Eren's hand and hoisted him out of the messy excuse of a bed and tugged him along. Eren tripped a few times as he stumbled out of the room.
"Why do you want me to see the stupid sunset?" Eren demanded harshly.
"Because I appreciate beautiful things, and I want to appreciate it with you, dumb brat," Levi answered as they finally exited the house.
The majority of the underground town's population of vampires were out hunting in nearby towns or forests, so the whole giant cavern looked deserted, like a ghost town. Lamps strung by rope were swinging and projecting lights as Levi moved faster and faster. Crimson eyes peeked out from the darkness as Levi picked up the human into his arms and started to sprint. He wasn't running at lightning speed like he usually would, which finally gave Eren more time to look around and inspect the place with squinting eyes. The place looked like a mythical village from those story books his mother used to read to him and Mikasa. Small cabins and huts lined up along the cool stone paths with vines and various plants weaving through the cracks. It would have been a nice place if vampires didn't exist in it.
They both knew they were standing just below the gaping hole when they spotted a patch of daylight laying on the damp stone ground. Levi bent his knees and and jumped, blasting them off into the pastel skies. Eren tucked his face into Levi's chest; he was feeling sick and his stomach was churning. It wasn't too long until he felt them stop abruptly. That was when he decided to pull away and look.
They were settled on a branch high in a tree. Eren grasped the collar of Levi's shirt tighter and tensed up.
"Don't be scared. I got you," he said when he sensed the boy's fear. "I won't drop you."
The trees pierced through the clouds which made Eren feel even more anxious, and the breeze carried the scent of pine and damp dirt. It was foggy, but he could still see the beautiful colors from a distance. There was a sun set just like Levi said there would be, and it was breathing taking; the colors orange and pastel pink meshing together and creating such an enchanting image in the sky. The huge puffy clouds were tinted rose and sailed through the baby blue skies like boats.
Eren looked up at Levi. There was a weird expression on his face; he looked wistful and pained all at once as if remembering something. His eyes appeared soft and almost innocent while his eyebrows were no longer knit together. A sight so rare for Eren. The cool breeze washed over his hair as Eren watch the black tangles flow and dance in the wind.
"Isn't it beautiful?" the vampire asked and stared longingly at it.
"Uh, I guess. I see it very often. I don't see why you needed to drag my ass on top of a tree just to see some dumb sunset," Eren drawled.
"It's not dumb," he snapped. "You humans are horrible creatures; getting distracted by money and sex and not even paying attention to the small things such as these. It's sad."
Eren rolled his eyes, but Levi didn't see. "You've heard of the myth where vampires die when the sun shines down on them, correct?" Levi continued when the boy didn't speak.
"Of course," he replied and huddled closer to him.
"That isn't the truth. We don't perish right away, but we grow weak. Very weak. We're still a tad bit stronger than most humans, but we lose most of our energy and powers," he explained. "We are able to stay in it for a few hours, but we gradually begin to die."
"Powers?" Eren asked with confusion in his voice.
"You don't remember when I showed you a memory of when we met? Or earlier when I calmed you down through a kiss? Just small powers, nothing special. Anyway, back to the subject," he said and paused. "This is the only time when I can bask in the remaining light of the sun; when it's heading back to hide and the moon getting ready to take its place. I haven't see the sun actual shining in almost three hundred years. This will not satisfy me at all. I remember when I was a human, I lived just near the mountains, and I had the best view from there."
"How did you die in the first place?" Eren sputtered.
The corner of Levi's mouth tugged upward and his fingers twitched too quickly for Eren to notice.
(AN: TRIGGER WARNING)
"It was a tragedy. I was twenty eight and was engaged to a beautiful woman whom I thought was my soul mate. She was... more than I could ever ask for. I can't remember what she looked like, but I know that she was the most gorgeous lady in town. I took her hand in marriage and I was just so happy. Six month after we married, she disappeared and left a note saying that I should leave immediately. I couldn't leave. I didn't have the mental strength to leave the town where we met. As a human, I was a coward and so I stayed. She came back and I thought she came back for me, but that was only partially true." He smiled, but there wasn't any warmth in it. "I was so overjoyed to see her again, and as my mouth opened to say 'I love you', that was when her pale and boney fingers wrapped around my throat. Her eyes looked tortured and it was almost like she was forced to do what she did to me. The color of her eyes were... so out of place. Just when I thought I was going to suffocate and die, she tilted my head to the side and sunk her teeth into my neck. It was simply excruciating and I couldn't even move. She was so strong, but she was still so beautiful, and in that moment, I fell in love with her again. I blacked out and woke again after what felt like hours. I was feverish and my skin was so chilled and pale. The feeling of thirst was too overwhelming and I had already known what I was. I studied about vampires in books before, thinking they only belonged in ridiculous, petty myths, but I was mistaken. I tried to kill myself by jumping off great heights and slit my wrists and digested poison. I didn't want to be a killer, but my suicide attempts failed. I tried to starve myself and traveled for weeks until I found a town. I couldn't take it anymore and I ended up slaughtering almost everyone there. Watching the blood of innocent people I didn't even know dripping down my hands was horrid, but it's who I am today. I went insane and continued to go on killing sprees until I could no longer give a fuck about anyone's life, and certain emotions disappeared."
(AN: Not too much, but it's over.)
Eren was frozen in his arms and squirmed in fear. His eyes were wide open and his hands were trembling. "Why am I still alive then?"
"The moment I saw you, I had no idea such innocence existed and I had decided to change my ways. Instead of killing humans, I started to get myself in illegal blood trades; I paid a hefty amount of gold just for a few vials of blood and then I finally found my chance to meet you again. I don't need anyone else but you now, Eren."
"So you're saying you only love me for my blood?"
"That's... not true," he spoke quietly, gazing down at the trees as the words flowed out of his mouth. He was hesitant wether or not to answer.
"Well, you're a monster who needs blood to survive. It can't be helped." Eren shivered as the wind blew past them. He intended to speak in a harsh and angry way, but something about Levi's story switched something inside of him; the guy had to go through enough already. He wasn't pitying him, he was just smart enough to know that arguing wouldn't do or change anything at all.
"Anyways, you once said I was R class, right?" Eren asked, changing the topic. The atmosphere had began to turn dense with intensity, and he didn't like that. "Meaning my blood is somewhat rare?"
"Yes," he answered quickly. "Very rare. We used to believe we could obtain that blood of humans who were born at midnight on the second sunday of March, but we were wrong. We still have no idea why it tastes so obnoxiously delicious and mouth watering when we smell it. The first ever person to have such blood was more than a hundred years ago. I need to keep a careful eye upon you now, you having rare blood and being my lover and all."
"Excuse me?" Eren snorted and nearly tumbled out of his arms. He steadied himself by grabbing Levi's shoulders and finding his equilibrium once more.
"You had agreed to it when I bit Mikasa, you imbecile."
"I did? Oh..." he trailed off and flushed. He had only agreed to it because of what situation they were in when he had suggested. He wasn't playing attention at the time. Eren looked away, feeling embarrassed once he realized he never had a lover before. He didn't love Levi, it was completely one sided, but it wasn't like he was able to do anything anyway. "Whatever," he added after a few seconds of thinking.
Levi sighed and shook his head. "I get it; you hate my guts and my very existence. I was joking back there, you know. I don't want to force you into something you don't want." He smiled sadly. Maybe he was lying, maybe he wasn't joking just a few hours ago.
Eren held in a laugh. Levi was already forcing him into plenty of things.
"Anyways, since Mikasa is dead, you have more time on your hands now," he continued as Eren flinched. "I'll leave you to your training. Your house is a mess, so you should stay with me. I don't want anyone else after you."
"Fine," Eren agreed only because he was right. His house was wreck. it wasn't even worthy to be called a house anymore. "How will I get out for training?"
"I'll escort you to there and back."
"I'm not a child," Eren snapped.
"You're correct, but do you really want to walk down there alone? You're a human with special blood and surrounded with rogues hiding in the shadows and ready to attack. Don't be stupid." He made a 'tch' sound.
Eren turned his head to look at the sky, but it was no longer colored; just a dim and azure colored canvas staring back at him.
