♛: Eighth Fatality
Because like always, good things never really lasted.
Commander Erwin still asked for his presence in the main tent to ask questions and Mikasa had fallen ill once more. She was back in bed again and was coughing up blood for two weeks. Eren asked Levi if he was still giving her the tears, and he replied with a yes. He was right; the tears wouldn't fix everything nor would it last for long. Eren was upset. He didn't want her to feel so much pain.
"There must be something you can do, right? I'll pay you anything, Levi," Eren said one night as he loomed over his sleeping sister.
"Of course there's something I can do, and I hope you already know what it is. You do know that it's a very high risk that she'll die, right? I don't think her body will be able to handle the venom," Levi explained.
"You said she's dying anyway, correct? As much as it pains me to say this, I think we should take a shot at this. I know it's selfish of me, but I don't want to lose her. She's probably going to hate me if I let you do this, though. That's fine."
Levi made a 'tsk' sound as he folded his arms and shook his head. "I'm going to tell you this now; there's a fifty-fifty chance that she can become a rogue vampire. Sick people like her always have a higher chance of being one, and they transform pretty quickly. Give her ten minutes and she'll be at your throat in a matter of seconds. She'll always be thirsty, more powerful and most likely not going to be like her old self. You don't need to do this, Eren."
Eren ignored the warning. "What do you want in return?"
"That should be obvious. Become my lover," he answered. "I want everything that you are, and you shall only belong to me."
Eren wrinkled his nose and flinched at the word 'lover' and shook his head. "Are you joking?"
"I've liked you ever since you were young, do you really think I would be joking right now? You're all I want, Eren-"
"Okay you can shut up now. I'll do whatever you like. I don't care. Just... just bite her," Eren said reluctantly.
"Are you certain?" he asked and knelt down beside the poor excuse of a bed. He gently brushed away the silky, black hair that covered her neck.
"Yes. I'm sure."
He bit down on her pale skin without pausing and began to do his work. Eren couldn't even watch; he had the strength to watch Armin die gradually in front of his eyes, but he couldn't handle the thought of Mikasa transforming into a strong, but horrific monster. His own family was going to be like Levi. His sweet and loving sister was going to be a loveless and scary beast, and he knew it. When he looked back, Levi was finished. It had all happened just like that. He technically took his own sister's life away in less than twenty seconds. It was so simple, so easy.
"The deed is done. Now we must wait," Levi declared "You shouldn't be so close. When she wakes up, she might attack you and I don't want that to happen. She's most likely going to go rogue. I'll pin her down when that happens."
Eren wasn't so sure if he should be offended by Levi's selected words. She wasn't even awake yet and he spoke of her like she was so life threatening. They couldn't be too sure yet. Her chest had stopped rising and falling, and he couldn't see her breath float in the air anymore. She was stone. Eren couldn't even feel sad, he felt guilt rise in his chest, making his throat and tight. He did what Levi instructed and stayed a few feet away from the bed and waited patiently.
Minutes past, and Eren could hear nothing else but his own breathing. Vampires couldn't breath and their presence was too hard to notice. It was almost the same as being alone.
Eren thought he saw Mikasa's hand twitch, but he thought otherwise. Maybe his mind was playing horrible tricks on him, but he was wrong. Levi flinched and was poised to tackle her down. Her hands were indeed moving, and she started to convulse. Eren backed up with fresh horror on his face.
"I was correct," Levi muttered under his breath and rushed forward to pin her down. "Eren, you need to leave-"
Levi was knocked backwards into the air and thrown against a wall before he could finish his sentence. The house was old and weak, and so the wall tumbled down to pieces the moment his back made impact. Mikasa looked around frantically with with her very bright, cerise coloured eyes. Her head twitched around as she got up. Her knees were slightly bend as she stumbled around.
"Eren," she muttered with a cracking voice. Her red eyes found his and they couldn't look away from one another as if it was only the two of them in the room. "Run."
"What-"
She leapt forward and knocked him down on his back. She was crazy strong, and Eren's wrists burned under her tight, iron like grasp. Mikasa's pupils darted across his face, studying him, inspecting him and probably decided where she wanted to bite first. She bore her fangs at him with a terrified expression written on her face. She didn't want to do it. She didn't want to hurt her only family left, but the temptation, the thirst; it was all too much. It was begging her for just one sip, but she inside that she wouldn't be able to stop. She was smart enough to know that.
Eren had definitely seen this coming and he had no idea if he should be scared. She was still Mikasa, only thirsty. Her eyes lit up again and she raised her hands, dagger like nails sprouting from the tips of her fingers. She transformed pretty quickly. Her scared expression was replaced with a mocking and sneering face.
"Mikasa-"
She smiled before burying her nails into the side of his torso. Levi reacted and got back up again, only to push the newborn off of Eren. He was screaming with immense pain when Mikasa's nails were pulled out, and he filled the entire room with the blood curling sounds. He curled up his body in pain as he flopped to his side and watched as Levi tackled Mikasa to the ground. He was angry; he gritted his teeth and his eyes were flaring madly. Eren gasped and coughed as he managed to get up on his upper half and dragged himself to their direction.
"Mikasa," he repeated weakly.
"Eren, you need to stay away," Levi snapped as he tried his hardest to hold Mikasa down. He was struggling. She was too powerful at that moment.
"Don't hurt her," he whispered with panic.
She looked over at him and grinned wickedly. This wasn't Mikasa anymore. This was someone else. No, this was something else. His beautiful, bright and smiling sister and childhood friend was gone. She didn't exist anymore. Eren couldn't even cry, he was completely horrified that she wasn't there anymore. He locked eyes with her once more as she freed herself from Levi's grasp and darted forward to attack him again. His own blood had been painted on the floor, and the room smelled like rust and salt. Did blood always smell so putrid?
She reached him and immediately wrapped her pale and skinny fingers around his neck and squeezed tightly, and his air way was blocked. He choked and dug at her hands, trying to loosen her grip on him, but it was no use. His vision was growing light and his head was in the clouds. The pain in his side was not as worse than the pain when he was first attacked in the dim and spooky forest, but that didn't mean it was any better. Cold and hot, that was it felt like; it was ice, a stinging sensation that melted into a raging, blazing fire whenever he moved as much as an inch.
Eren looked up at her and cracked a smile. "This is fine." He then laughed. In some twisted and fucked up way, this was something she would do. Kill someone without a mess so that they didn't have to feel anything later on. She was still being thoughtful.
Everything was happening so fast once more, just like the time he was in the forest. Mikasa appeared like a blur of black and white as she was shoved away from Eren by Levi and once again pinned to the ground. Eren sucked in as much air as he could while rubbing the skin of his neck and watched as Levi bared his teeth at Mikasa. He hissed at her, and the next thing he did was unbelievable to Eren.
He ripped her head off and it looked as easy as snapping a twig in half.
Eren screamed in horror and sadness as he watched his sister's body fall limp and motionless and thudded to the ground. Her head was being carried by her black hair in Levi's bloody hands, and Eren had never seen so much blood until that moment. Her body was dripping out what seemed like a river of blood, dripping and sliding across the dusty wooden floor the way water would. Her eyelids were still wide and her eyes were still glowing. Eren thought he imagined her lips twisting into a gentle smile once more before he eyes were shut closed.
"Why..." Eren's voice shook and he was dragging himself towards Levi. "WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU DO THAT?"
Levi sighed as he dropped the head carelessly. It made a gross squishing sound and a hard thud when it reached the messy floor boards. Eren's nostrils stung from inhaling the scent of his own sister's blood.
"She was going to kill you," Levi whispered.
"So what? You could have brought her out of here!" Eren was screaming. His throat already felt dry.
"You're overestimating me, brat. She was stronger than any other vampire I've faced in the last two hundred years. If I got her outside, anyone could have seen her. Her eyes- did you see them? She was very thirsty up to the point that she was already driven insane, and it blocked emotions. She ignored the thought that you were her only family left because she wanted blood. Don't you understand? This was the only way-"
"No it wasn't, you liar," Eren interrupted. "You could have knocked her out or something."
"But if she woke up? She would still be the same. Rogue vampires are incredibly dangerous, and they can almost never satisfy their thirst, that's why they never get partners. They would suck them dry on the first day. She was going to die either way. She was sick, Eren, she would have never gotten better. Don't make me the bad guy in this situation. I only did as you asked, and you got it but it failed."
Eren stayed silent but winced when he tried moving again.
"I'm not the villain, but I'm at fault for getting you hurt. If I didn't bite her, you wouldn't have gotten injured, and now you're losing so much... blood." Levi's nose wrinkled and he closed his eyes for a brief moment. "Rogue blood will evaporate after a while. We'll head to my place to tend to your wounds."
Eren couldn't even cry despite what he just watched. Maybe it was because ever since she fell ill, it was already like she died anyway. Instead, he felt empty.
"Don't touch me," he snarled when Levi moved to pick him up.
"Eren, you're going to die if I don't do anything."
"Fine. Leave me here. I don't care," he said and covered his face with his hands. His eyes were dry and he still didn't cry. Sadness washed over his heart. "She's gone now. I'm alone now. What's the point?"
Levi dipped to his knees and grabbed Eren's jaw. "I'm here. I'll keep you company and I'll never leave you. I'll stay by your side and protect you. You won't be alone now that you have me."
"I hate you."
"I know that and I don't care," he whispered and brought their faces closer. He pressed his bloody hand to Eren's chest, above his heart. It was hammering at lightning speed. "Calm down. I'll take care of you."
"I h-"
He silenced him with his lips.
Levi didn't make any move to part his lips, but he did lick the human's bottom lip longingly and sighed again. It was a soft and soothing kiss, nothing more than that. Eren couldn't fight back, but he could feel himself calming down, like he was just given some medical herbal tea. He was relaxed.
Levi pulled away and looked down at Eren with sincere but unreadable eyes. "I love you."
"Just heal me already."
