Introduction ~ Hi! ~ Check in here 📌
hi.
Welcome to perhaps the most gate-kept industry since the dawn of time.
I decided to officially sit down and write some advice about publishing, since I do get a fair amount of questions regarding publishing that I'd like to answer in case others have the same thoughts. But first....
Allow me to introduce myself. I go by Ether here in the Wattpad universe, but I would never use that as an actual pen name, just so you know (it's the main character in my fantasy series lol). I have a degree in marketing, and work for a publishing company that publishes a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction books as well as children's books and textbooks. I work with authors, agents, and editors (I am none of the three, by the way), and have had long discussions with each to better understand the different facets of the publishing industry. There are many things that are still confusing even to well-seasoned executives, but I do feel that I've unlocked some sort of "secret sauce" that many authors are unaware of when it comes to the inner workings of publishing, so I am here to impart some of my knowledge on you. Woo!
Disclaimer: I would like to post sections for this guidebook in chunks rather than separately, so it may be a little while to see actual... content on this book. But trust me, it's in the works!
You probably opened this book with a lot of expectations. Before you become deeply engrossed in knowledge (this is 100% a joke), I wanted to inform you of several things this book aims to discuss, and also what it will not be discussing (b̶e̶c̶a̶u̶s̶e̶ ̶w̶h̶e̶n̶ ̶I̶ ̶h̶a̶v̶e̶ ̶q̶u̶e̶s̶t̶i̶o̶n̶s̶,̶ ̶I̶ ̶l̶i̶k̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶k̶n̶o̶w̶ ̶w̶h̶e̶t̶h̶e̶r̶ ̶a̶ ̶b̶o̶o̶k̶ ̶w̶i̶l̶l̶ ̶a̶n̶s̶w̶e̶r̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶m̶ ̶o̶r̶ ̶n̶o̶t̶).
This being said, there are Q&A chapters divided by topic, so please refer to those if you have a question, and maybe your question will already be answered!
So...
What will this book NOT discuss?
❌ If you are worthy of being published, or not.
❌ The cure to writer's block (guys... there isn't one lol)
❌ The antidote to imposter syndrome (this comes with time and patience and confidence)
❌ How to write, how to be an author, or how to edit.
❌ Bashing authors or publishers for clout (I will also NOT tolerate it in my comment sections and Q&A chapters).
❌ Wattpad-specific publishing methods (not my wheelhouse)
Still here? Let's move on to...
What this book WILL discuss:
✅ Getting started on your publishing journey
✅ How to get your manuscript publisher-ready
✅ How to communicate professionally with your publisher
✅ How to detach yourself from the book and make the best decisions for it
✅ How to write a query letter 👀
✅ Resources for publishing
✅ How to promote yourself
✅ Best practices for selling your book
✅ Trends in publishing
✅ Reviews and publicity
✅ How to trust the process
✅ The publisher's perspective
And I'm sure I'll think of more things to add as we go, but I'm sure you can assume the types of topics I'll be discussing throughout this book. If you have any curiosity about these things, please stick around. There will be periodic Q&A chapters where I will answer popular questions, and you can also ask you burning questions in those chapters (they are separated by topic/idea). Please utilize those sections!
