III. Is this THE book?

I don't know. I can't answer that for you.

I can name several Wattpad authors who I believe wholeheartedly should have been published by now, but according to those authors, they just don't feel like their book is THE book they will debut with. [Note: this is different from imposter syndrome]

Rejections, as we discussed, hurt like crazy and discourage you in your journey to publishing. And that's stinky and so not fun, especially when you thought this was the book, and agents either ghost you or sent an auto-form rejection instead of even giving your letter or manuscript its due attention. That might get you thinking: "Man, I guess this wasn't THE book." I hate that thought with a passion -- it makes me think I've wasted all this time, that I could've spent it writing THE book, and... (we're not going down that rabbit hole today, folks).

I can say, that when it is THE book, you'll know it is THE book. Grit your teeth and hang on for the ride, and never stop creating content. You're a writer, aren't you? What if your current project gets published, but you have zero other ideas? That won't look good for future selling potential. Publishers who choose you want to know that they can choose you again, have you publish more books with them. They'll want to sign a second, third, fourth contract with you.

Have a plethora or ideas to try out. Explore those. It is not a bad thing to have entertained the spark of an idea. Let it fester. Give it time. Because who knows? A few years down the line you could get inspired to continue that spark, and then that could be THE book!

Honestly, I always thought my weird dark fantasy with assassins in a  cyberpunk dystopia was going to be my BIG hit. Back in the day on WP, it hit almost 70k reads, and that was a lot at the time. I was only fifteen, but my naive brain thought it was the next best thing since sliced bread.

Yeah... I was wrong. Please don't ever read it 😂💀

You will always find ways to improve, and you will always cringe at your old writing. But this paves the way for greater things -- THE book. That should be the goal. At least at the start.
