Watching And Dreaming
Thank you for everything, fellow weirdos. I hope you enjoy the epic conclusion to the main story of Adventures in the Boiling Isles. -Mal.
The ground started shaking as strings were grabbing onto our friends and taking them away to the archives. "Mama! Amity!" Luz shouted. "Shit! He knows we're here." I gasped before seeing a flash of light.
I looked around to see myself in Belos's castle. As I was about to stand up, Lucky crawled up on my arm. "Lucky!" I gasped. "I'm so glad you're okay, little buddy. Why are we in Belos's castle? I thought it was destroyed." "Welcome to your first day of training as a coven scout, Peter." I heard Lilith's friend, Steve say. "Belos thinks you're ready for the mountain trial." "Training? To be a coven scout? Oh, hell no!" I snapped. "You can't make me!" "Oh, but Belos says the Titan has big plans for you." Another scout said. "You'll be given a special task after training is complete. Capture The Owl Lady!"
"I REFUSE TO FREEZE MY BALLS OFF ON A MOUNTAIN! I'LL NEVER IMPRISON MY MOTHER!" I cried as Luz woke me up with one of her light glyphs. "Luz! Thank God!" Looking around, I saw Eda and King both having nightmares, surrounded by puppet versions of Lilith, Grandma Gwendolyn, Grandpa Dell, and Bill the Titan Trapper. "You go wake up King, I'll take care of Eda." Luz said, handing me a light glyph. I ran over to King and instantly activated the light glyph. "It's gonna be okay, King." I reassured him as Luz came to join me. "Weh? Luz? Peter? Guys!" King cried, jumping on top of us. "Hey, buddy." Luz replied. "Hey, little bro." I chuckled. "Is this real? Is that Luz and Peter?" Eda asked, running towards us. "Are you all really here?" "Get over here, you witch." Luz cried as we all had a group hug. "It's Mom and King!" I cried. "I thought we'd lost you guys forever." Eda kissed all of us and we all were crying tears of joy. "I thought I'd never see you again." Eda whimpered. "How did you get back to the Demon Realm?" "It's a very long story." I replied. "We wouldn't know where to begin." "There was Belos in the Human Realm." Luz began. "There was what?!" Eda and King asked. "Then we saw Kikimora. She, uh, was a lot to deal with." Luz continued. "I can imagine." King said, annoyed. "And then, Luz's mom decided to..." I added, finally noticing that my mom was missing an arm. "Whoa! How the fuck did that happen?!" "Uh, that's a shorter story." Eda explains. "Oh, is that Luz's Palisman?" Owlbert, Stringbean, and Lucky finally interacted with each other for the first time. "Hey, hey, all I wanna do is hear all of you talk over hot chocosmilk. But first, we got to find a way out of whatever this is." King said, just as The Collector made a pretty cool entrance. "I don't get it, King. I really don't get it." The Collector said. "I thought you loved playing our games. Why do you choose these itty-bitty spiders over me?" "Because your games stink, squirt." Eda replied. "And 'cause spiders are awesome." Luz commented. "Yeah! Especially the itty-bitty ones." King exclaimed. "Radioactive or otherwise." I added. "Aw, you act like I'm doing something bad, but I'm just having fun." The Collector explains. "Trapping people and scaring them and controlling them?" King asked. "That's not fun, Collector." "And everyone nearly died from the draining spell." Eda added. "So? Toys break all the time. You just fix them." He said, breaking a toy version of himself and repairing it. "Do you not understand what death means to mortals?" I asked, thinking of my dad. "Well, don't worry because I don't want to scare you anymore." The Collector reassured us, levitating in the air. "I think we can all be great friends. So, let me show you some of my favorite games."
The Collector showed us his favorite games alright. We were basically playing his version of Pac-Man, Marbles, and Jenga, but it looked like they had enough after a while. "Thank God!" I sighed with relief. "I think I barfed like 12 times." King said. "Wanna make it a lucky number 13?" Eda asked. Surprisingly, Luz and I noticed The Collector crying. "Kids!" Eda warned as we began to approach him. "Eda, let them go." King said. "If anyone can talk sense into them, it's Luz and Peter." "Collector, you know this can't last forever." Luz explains. "Why? Because you know you'll lose?" The Collector sniffled. "I just wanted a friend who wouldn't lie to me or trick me, but everyone's the same. King lied. Belos lied. Even they lied." "Who the hell is they?" I asked. "The Archivists, my siblings." The Collector explained. ""Oh, let's play a game," they said, "Let's play hide and seek." You go down there and see if the Titans wanna play." So, I played. And it was great. The baby Titans were the cutest, just like King, and they were all so welcoming. But The Archivists were scared of their power. So, one by one, they disappeared. Until there was one Titan left, and he thought I was the bad guy. He hid his egg from me and trapped me. But I showed all of them. Even when those Trapper jerks starting acting weird. Even when Belos lied to me. I found King! I found the last Titan and he's my friend now!" "Collector." King said. "I know it's just pretend, I don't care." The Collector cried. "I'll pretend as long as I want!" "But that's not what you want, is it?" Luz asked. "What do you know?" The Collector questioned. "We know what it's like to feel alone." Eda replied. "And abandoned." King said. "And neglected." I added. "And misunderstood." Luz frowned. "Hey, what if we showed you how we became friends?" "King already told me about your adventures." The Collector replied. "It's different when you can see them." I said, showing the child some pictures. "What do you think? Can we tell you our stories?" Luz asked.
We took The Collector to the place that started it all, The Owl House, even though it was still vandalized. "Wow. I thought we would just, like, flip through these." Luz said. "So it all started at the Birdhouse." The Collector recalled. "The Owl House." Eda corrected. "Speaking of which, what happened to it?" "Oh, yeah, you, uh, haven't seen it in a while." King remembered. "For Luz and I, it started in the Human Realm." I explained. "Things were shitty for both of us, but we found our way here, and we met Owlbert, Hooty, and Eda the Owl Lady, my mother." "And the King of Demons!" King added. "None of us felt like we fit in. So we decided to not fit in together." Luz continued. "It was that easy, huh?" The Collector scoffed. "Not really." Luz replied. "Peter and I had a lot to learn, but after a while, we met more people who helped us." "Whoa! That game looks fun." The Collector gasped at a picture of us playing Grudgby. "I wanna go there."
We flew to Hexside's Grudgby field to show The Collector around. "This is where we play a game called Grudgby." I explained. "And another game called Flyer Derby." "In Grudgby, the ball can bite you and the rules are nonsense, but it's still kinda fun." King added. "Nonsense?" Eda scoffed. "Hexside lets you play any magic sport these days. Grudgby was all we had and we made the best of it." "And you were the star player. We know, Mama." I chuckled. "Did you know Lilith was her captain?" King asked. "Really? Now that's a spinoff." Luz replied. The Collector flew over to Mattholomule, Jerbo, and Celine, accidentally scaring them away. "I wanna go somewhere different." The Collector pouted, looking at a picture of our next destination.
We flew to the Knee with The Collector, which somehow put a smile on my face. "I'm really glad you picked this place, Collector." I smiled. "It's really special to me." "Same here." Luz added. "It's where Eda helped us make a connection with the isles." "It's also where my BFF here discovered his powers for the first time." Luz drew the ice glyph and showed them. "A baby could do that." The Collector scoffed. "Still. I've never seen an itty-bitty spider do it that way. Not everyone can recognize Titan magic. He must really like you if he's shown you this much. He never told me about it, though. Did you force them to be your friend too? Like, uh, what are their names? Lilith and Amity?" "They didn't force anyone to do anything." King explained. "Yeah, people are complex, and sometimes, they just need a little kindness and forgiveness." Luz added. "Kindness and forgiveness, huh?" The Collector asked. "Yup." I replied. All of a sudden, the ground was shaking again, but it wasn't coming from The Collector this time. I heard someone breathing very loudly. "Do you hear that?" "Hear what?" Luz wondered. The Collector looked at the Titan skull. "What the hell is that?!" I exclaimed. "Breathing." They replied as there was a blue light coming from where the Titan's eye would have been. "Those eyes. Don't tell me it's..." "Belos." Luz and I said.
As we took to the sky again, the isles were being covered in something too hard to describe, but it definitely resembled Belos. "It's coming from the castle." Luz explains. "I swear to God, this asshole is obsessed with possession!" I complained. "Finally! I can cleanse this perdition myself." We heard Belos say, destroying parts of the isles. "Is that Belos?" Eda asked. "How'd he get here without a body?" Luz wondered. The Collector stepped on what looked like one of Raine's earrings. "What do we do? There's no way we can stop that." King said. "Yes, there is." The Collector reassured us. "And I know how." He charged towards Belos, leaving us all in confusion. "No. What is he doing?" Luz asked. "Belos possessed the Titan. He's not going to listen." I replied. "I get it now. You just need kindness and forgiveness, huh?" The Collector wondered, hugging Belos. "This is fucked up." I said. "Luz! Peter! Look! We can all be buddies now!" They exclaimed as Belos was getting angry. "Collector!" Luz cried, flying to save him. "No!" King shouted. "Luz!" I screamed. She protected The Collector, but risked her own life. "Huh? But I thought I was doing the right thing?" He asked. "No. No. You did good, Collector, but this is a little more complicated." Luz explains. "Don't worry. I think it missed me." Luz had just realized that she was being covered in that same stuff around the isles. "Luz, what's happening?" They asked. "Eda, King, Peter, looks like we're gonna be split up again." Luz whimpered. "I feel like I should be used to this feeling by now, but, I still don't know what to say." Luz faded away into light, kinda like how Flapjack sacrificed his life for Hunter back in in Gravesfield. The Collector and Stringbean came down to the ground. "Luz? Luz?" He asked. "Yoo-hoo! You can come out now!" Eda, King, and I were in shock. "Well, it's okay. She's just broke, so I'll fix her." He said, trying to bring her back, but it didn't work. "Why isn't it working? The Archivists aren't here. They couldn't have taken her." I felt alone without Luz. She was my best friend. All I wanted to do was fight for her. Belos tried attacking The Collector again, but this time, King protected him with a shield. "Peter! Owl Lady! You know where Luz is, right?" He asked. "Back up, kids. I don't think I can control myself right now." Eda replied, becoming the Owl Beast. King hopped on Eda's back to try weakening Belos. "Belos hurt my family. He killed Luz. And now, I WILL TAKE HIM DOWN!" I shouted, transforming into an alternate version of Eda's harpy form. I checked if I could still use my magic, or if I was cursed. I drew a spell circle for a simple light spell and it surprisingly worked.
I followed my mom and brother to fight Belos. We all gave him everything we got. I even shot Belos a few times with my gun. "Eat shit, Belos!" Eda pulled me and King away for safety. "No! Please stop! Run away!" The Collector warned, still trying to bring back Luz. "Why isn't anything working? I don't want anyone else to go away. I don't want anyone else to go missing. I'm sorry for everything! What is this stuff? Why won't it stop? No! No! Get off of her!" The Collector grabbed onto me for safety as Belos was about to crush us, but couldn't due to getting burned. That's when a familiar face reappeared with a whole new look. Stringbean went to her witch, who had made an epic return. "Huh? It can't be." The Collector said. "Holy shit! It's Luz!" I cried. "I'm back!" Luz exclaimed. She almost reminded me of King. "Uh, wait... No, I... Couldn't keep me away from... Just hang on. I still can't think of anything to say!" "It's Luz, alright." Eda said, regaining consciousness. "Thank God you're alive!" I cried, hugging my bestie. "Whoa! Peter, you're a harpy now!" Luz gasped. "Are you cursed?" "I don't feel cursed. My powers still work." I replied. "That's my boy!" Eda cheered as Belos continued roaring in anger. Luz used her new powers to launch us over the Titan's skull, seeing that the Archives was falling apart. "Overshot it a little." Luz explained. "Still getting used to these powers." "Oh, no. Everyone is still in the Archives." Eda recalled. "Leave them to me." The Collector said, going to the Archives to save his former prisoners.
Luz brought the rest of us down to Belos's podium where the Day of Unity took place. However, Belos's spell was quickly approaching us. Luz tried to cast a spell, but was struggling. "Concentrate." Eda explained. "Think of what you want." She helped Luz create her first spell circle as I did one to help her. Part of Belos's spell was eliminated and turned into red grass. But more was coming our way. "Luz, on three!" King exclaimed. "One, two, WEH!" Luz used her new powers to make King's sound waves stronger. "Peter! Eda!" Luz shouted as we flew up to help her create another spell circle. Most of the spell became more red grass. However, Belos didn't want to give up. "Hold on!" Luz launched us up to one of the Titan's hands, or claws. "Wow." Eda said. "We have to cut Belos off from the Titan's power." Luz explains. "What are you thinking?" Eda asked. "C'mon, Eda. You know where magic comes from." I replied. "From the heart!" We all shouted, heading towards the castle and the Titan's heart.
Once we got inside, I heard whistling coming from a room in the castle. But the sound was definitely familiar. "It's Raine!" I gasped. Eda ran towards Raine to set them free. "Who's there?" Raine asked. "Stay away!" Eda puts their glasses back on. "It's okay, Raine." Eda says. "I gotcha." "I'm still not used to this new look, but it doesn't matter. I'm just happy you're here." Raine smiled. "Luz and Peter? You both look fluffier. How long was I out for?" "We don't have much time." Luz explains. "Let's end this son of a bitch." I said. "Finally." Raine added.
We destroyed his shield to the throne room where Belos was with the Titan's heart. Luz and I spawned some ice and pulled on what was left of Belos's rib cage. "You can't defeat me!" Belos exclaimed. Eda, King, and Raine helped by destroying any of his upcoming attacks. "Do not fucking underestimate us, Belos." I said. "For we are the good witches, Luz and Peter." "Children of the Human Realm, students of the Demon Realm, and warriors of peace!" Luz added. Belos growled again. "Now eat this, sucker!" We shouted at the same time, pulling Belos away from the heart, restoring peace to the Boiling Isles.
After everything happened, all Luz and I wanted to do was make sure Belos rots in Hell. However, Belos tried his best to trick us with his original form, Philip Wittebane. "Luz, Peter, I'm free. Thank goodness you saved me from... from this horrible curse." Belos lied. Neither of us responded. "Yes, I was cursed with a terrible sickness by... by dark magic, just like your mentor. It forced me to do all of those horrible things, but now I'm free." I pulled out my gun and shot him, just as the boiling rain started coming down. "Quickly now!" He begged as he started decaying. "Don't you want to make peace, Luz and Peter? Don't just stand there. You'll be just as bad, just as conniving, just as evil, and just as unforgivable as those witches. We're human. We're better than this!" "Well, we ain't!" Eda snapped as she, King, and Raine finished off Belos by stomping on him. "That was extremely satisfying." Raine said. "Ew, it's on my claws." King complained. All of a sudden, Luz and I started glowing as something left our bodies, almost resembling King. "Holy shit!" I gasped. "Is that?" Raine wondered. "I think it is." Eda replied. "Dang, kid. You do have tall genes." As soon as Luz stopped glowing, she fell to the ground while the rest of us caught her fall. "Can you believe it, Mom? King's dad gave me fucking harpy powers!" I exclaimed. "Oh, your dad had a message for you." Luz remembered, whispering to King. ""I loaf you?"" King asked. "I loaf you. Bread pun." We all laughed along. "Isn't it amazing? We did it." Luz sighed in relief. "After everything, after all of that, we stuck together." I smiled. "Yeah, we did alright." Eda replied. "I'll say." King added.
And that's how we saved the Boiling Isles. Well, as much as we could. We were so relieved to see everyone safely released from the Archives. They were spared the worst of it at least. Because of that, everyone got to reunite with their families and loved ones. And if someone thought they had no one waiting for them, well, they were in for a nice surprise. Still, there was a lot of rebuilding to be done. And not everyone was keen to change things, but we were ready to give it a shot. All of us.
The Collector came by The Owl House to bring by some guests. Lilith came through the door as Eda and I ran to hug her. Amity got to make out with Luz. I got to make out with Willow, and Camila even got to meet Eda and King for the first time. The Collector even made sure Lulu and Hootsifer had a proper reunion.
As for The Collector, he and Luz had made a pinky promise to keep trying their best. He said he had a lot of growing up to do, so he decided to return to the stars. No one argued, but I think I heard King whisper, "I hope I see you again." We got our happy ending. But Luz and I realized something in that moment. When the Titan had finally passed on, so did the powers of the glyphs. Both of us had learned the Titan's language, but now we had no one to speak it to. It had helped us find our place when we had no other way. I know we'll never forget it. A whole chapter in our lives was over, but a new one was just beginning.
3 years later
I still can't believe it's been this long since Belos was defeated. Almost feels like it was just yesterday to be honest. These last few years have been pretty crazy. Where to start.
Well, I graduated from Gravesfield High and Hexside along with Luz. And we both got writing scholarships! Not everyone can say they graduated from high school twice.
Uncle Ricky married Aunt Monika last summer. Although he wants me to stay with Eda in the isles, I can tell he's not used to only seeing me on weekends.
Willow and I? We're still together. Nothing really changed between us. We're now the coaches of Hexside's Flyer Derby team.
Gus kept the Human Appreciation Society going at the University of Wild Magic, where he's in charge of the exchange program.
Amity and Alexa helped their dad with a bunch of cool abomination gadgets, leaving Odalia out of the picture. Even going as far as removing sigils. Say what?! And for those of you wondering, Luz and Amity are still together as well.
Hunter literally made a new friend a few years ago. A little bluejay named Waffle. That golden bastard has been living on cloud nine. He's been learning how to make Palismen from my grandfather, who also taught me this special Clawthorne tradition. Speaking of, Willow and I helped him make a little grave for Flapjack. And on a side note, our crew got matching Flapjack tattoos.
Mom got married to Raine and I became their stepson. Sure, I'm gonna miss my dad, but I couldn't be happier.
Today was the special day. We've been planning this surprise for Luz for a while, but it was time to head to the Human Realm. I summoned Lucky and flew to The Owl House, where the Collector made us a new portal. I did a little secret knock and opened the door to Gravesfield.
On the other side, I knocked on the door to Luz's house. "Hey, Peter." Vee greeted, answering the door. "Come on in. Luz is almost done packing." "We gotta hurry!" I warned. "We got shit to do." I knocked on Luz and Vee's bedroom door. "Hola, Chico búho." Camila greeted. "Hola, Camila." I said. "Hey, Luz. Hello, Stringbean. You ready?" "Just packing up the rest of my things." Luz replied. "How is everyone?" "They're all doing fine. They can't wait to see you, probably getting tired of me." I joked. "After today, you won't have to ask me that question."
Once she finished packing, Vee, Camila, and I led Luz to the old house where the new portal door was for her surprise. "Hurry, hurry!" Vee exclaimed, changing to her true form. "What's the rush, Vee?" Luz asked. "No one's gonna be mad if we're a little late." "Yes, but today is special." Camila replied. "Okay, okay." Luz said, opening her eyes to see her surprise "King-ceañera". "Surprise!" We all shouted. "What is this?" Luz asked as Amity kissed her cheek. "Well, since you spent your 15th birthday helping us rebuild the Isles..." Alexa began. "And 16th." I recalled. "And 17th." King added. "We wanted to make it up to you." Amity finished. "Camila told us all about your quinceañeras from the Human Realm." Willow explains. "They sounded a lot less haunted than our birthdays." Gus chuckled. "Nevertheless, I made sure we followed Camila's instructions perfectly." Lilith said. "Great work, everyone." Camila commented. "Muy bueno." "And look!" King exclaimed, drawing a new glyph pattern in the ground. He activated it, creating a ball of light. "King's powers are getting stronger." Eda explained. "Yeah, it looks like they're different from his dad's. But, hey, you've got a whole new glyph language to try out." "Guys." Luz cried. "We've got another surprise." I remembered. "You're gonna like this. It's pretty badass." "The Collector was in the area, and, well, he wanted to do something special for the occasion." King explained, pointing to the sky. "Look!" The Collector summoned an enchanted meteor shower across the Boiling Sea. "Peter, Eda, King, thank you for everything." Luz thanked us. "Right back at you, kiddo." Eda replied. "Anything for you, buddy." I smiled. "Weirdos?" "Weirdos." Luz, Eda, and King replied as the meteor shower was ending. "They're nearly gone!" Luz gasped. "Okay, everyone. On the count of three. One, two, three!"
BYEEEE!
