Understanding Willow
Today at school, we were assigned to make a photo collage for a class. "Oh, my gosh, guys, I'm so excited for photo class." Luz explains. "I can't believe you can make pictures of your actual memories, especially traumatic ones." I said. "I'ma see me some baby Willow." "I'll admit. I was adorable." Willow admitted. And I admit that you are adorable. "Don't eat that!" Luz shouted at her locker, which refused to give her the books. "I can't believe they'd hang out with her. It's just embarrassing." Boscha the Bitch gossips. ""Look at me. I'm going on a date with my ferns."" Willow frowned. "That could be anyone." Luz said. "Solid Willow impression, Boscha." Skara compliments. "Amity, weren't you friends with Willow?" "I'm a Blight. We only associate with a select few." Amity replied. "Keep annoying me, though, I'm happy to select fewer."
Later in class, Luz and I helped Willow set up her project. "Alright, memory melon. Let's pick out a juicy one." Luz said, placing something in Willow's ear. "Be careful with my brain." Willow warned as Luz pulled a picture from her ear. "Shit, that was cool." I said. "As you work, note that some prints have greater clarity than others." The teacher explains. "These are moments that evoke a strong, emotional response. But, if you damage the prints, you damage the memories themselves. Be extremely careful." "Whoa, photo class is intense." I said. "Oh my gosh, Willow!" Luz gasped. "You had an awkward hair phase, too?" All of a sudden, more photos were shown. One in particular caught my eye. A younger version of Willow was hugging with Amity and Alexa. Willow only rolled her eyes. "I know you and Amity have a history. Wouldn't you feel better talking about it?" Luz asked. "No, I'd rather do this." Willow replied, turning the picture over. "That's my motto after all. "Out of sight, out of mind."" "If you won't tell me what she did, Peter and I will never be able to cook up a scheme to make you friends again." Luz begged as the lunch bell rang. "I get it, but I don't want you to do that." Willow said. "No schemes, no plots, no ruses. None." "Can we go get lunch now?" I asked. "If I don't eat now, I'll end up eating Hooty."
At lunch, I sat down with my friends as Gus was making a cork board. "Hey there, detective." I greeted. "Are you solving a crime or about to commit one?" "Sadly, this is one problem crime I can't solve." Gus replied. "My interview for journalism class is due tomorrow. I'm supposed to choose someone interesting, accomplished, and noteworthy. People aren't meant to be those things. Curse your need for perfection, Gus!" "Okay, buddy." Luz said, calming down Gus with some Apple Blood. "So, Willow... Wow, are you okay?" "When did it get so hot?" Willow asked, sweating. She poured water over herself and started steaming. "Uh, hi. I'm Willow. Remind me of your names?" "This is serious journalism, Willow." Gus said. "Clowning around will get you nowhere." "I'm serious. Who are you?" Willow asked again. "I'll admit, this amnesia spin has piqued my interest." Gus replied. "Gus, it really seems like she's forgotten us." Luz explains. "Like her memory is..." "Like her memory is gone!" I gasped.
All of us quickly rushed to the photo classroom to see Willow's memories on fire. "Hexside Free Press!" Gus shouted. "What's going on here?" We also saw Amity trying to put out the fire. "Hi." Amity greeted shyly. "You fucking destroyed Willow's memories?!" I snapped. "I saved as many as I could." Amity explains as the remaining memories were burned. "Ugh, why would they make memories so flammable?!" "Have I always had this crazy thing?" Willow asked, slapping herself with her hand. "I can tell we're gonna be good friends.
After school, we immediately took Willow, Gus, and Amity to the Owl House. "So, this is the Owl House?" Amity asked. "Yup." Luz replied. "And both of you sleep here?" She asked. "When the night critters allow us to." I explained. "So, you set Willow's memories on fire and erased everything." Eda said. "Even minor damage can have huge effects." "Ah, chair for sitting." Willow gasped, messing around on the couch. "Yup. Her brain's burned up real good." Eda explains. "Damage like that can change everything about a person. Willow may never be the same." "I got it!" Willow cheered. "Ooh, a furry fruit. I'm gonna peel it." She picks up King and pulls on his fur. "What?" King asked. "What is happening?" "Nap time." Eda said, casting a spell circle that immediately put Willow to sleep. "Sleep spell." King yawned. "I didn't cast it on you." Eda said. "Yeah, who cares?" King asked with a yawn. "Is there anything we can do?" I asked Eda. "There is one way. But it's terribly dangerous and partially illegal. So you're in the right place!" Eda explains. "I'll send you into her mind to fix the damage." "Be still, my fantasy-loving heart." Luz said. "I have always wanted to do this! Thank you, Boiling Isles." "It won't be easy. You have a lot to fix in there because it's a mess." Eda warned. "Yup. Whoever did this to Willow showed unbelievable disregard for her safety, downright despicable. Oh, right, it was you. Anyway, Luz, who's going inside with you?" "Maybe I could help." Hooty suggested. "I'm pretty good at getting stuck in people's heads." "This is someone's brain, not a nightclub." Eda scoffed, slamming the door. "Three max." "Gus has a lot on his plate." Luz explains. "Peter, Amity, you have to come with me." "Willow might not want me in there." Amity sighed. "You set everything in there on fire!" I snapped. "We're both going with Luz." "Okay, I'll do what I can." Amity sighed, taking Luz's hand. "Okay, bold choice taking Peter and the girl who caused the mess." Eda said, summoning a bell. "When you're done, ring that and I'll cast you back. Oh, and keep an eye out for her inner Willow. She's the gatekeeper of emotions and memory. She might help you. Now, here we go!" And just like that, Eda sent us into Willow's mind.
Once inside, her memories looked like a huge forest of trees. "Where's her inner Willow?" Amity asked. "Do you really think it'll help?" "I don't know. We'll just have to start fixing stuff on our own." Luz replied. "Now let's see." The memory she found showed a wooden fort on the beach. "Hey, I found something magical. I'm gonna put my face in it." "Luz?" I asked. "I think I found the memories. Let's go." Luz explains, pulling me and Amity into the frame. "And welcome to Willow's beautiful memory?" "Lake Lacuna. This is where Willow and I took swimming lessons." Amity explains. "The ash must be from the fires. Our fort in the dunes!" "You pitched a tent?" I asked. "Sort of." Amity replied. "One time, Willow and I wanted to play hooky from our swim lessons, so we built this." "Forts. Hooky. Willow." Luz said. "Can words get any cuter?" "We knew the swim teacher would be on prowl, but Willow said she would protect us, with an illusion spell." Amity explains. "What? It's like a little doghouse for angels." Luz gasped. "Wait. But something is missing." Amity said. "What could be missing?" I asked. Amity picked up a tiny flag from the sand and fixed the fort, repairing the memory and bringing us back to the forest. "Whoa, we're back." Amity said. "I think fixing the fort fixed the memory." Luz added as a memory of a young Willow and Amity playing in the fort, until they were caught by the swimming coach. "Willow was a late bloomer." Amity explains. "I know. But now, she's more like a great bloomer." I said. "This place seems like a theater showing her most important moments. Now, let's fix some more." Luz found that picture of Willow and Amity, which burned out Amity. "The photo that started it all." Luz said. "Let's do it next." "Wait!" Amity warned, changing the subject. "You want important moments? This one might be about a crush." "Don't mind if I do." I whispered.
We fixed a bunch of Willow's memories for about an hour. "We don't need to see how this one ends." I said, flipping the memory over. "Yeah, Willow threw up a lot that day." Amity recalled. "That's when you knew she was having fun." "Ew. I mean, aww." Luz cooed. "Hey, you okay?" "Yeah, it's just, I can't believe I almost erased all this." Amity sighed. "I really messed things up." "Don't worry. We've gotten really good at fixing memories. We won't rest until we've got this all sorted out." Luz reassured her. "Repeat after me, "We can fix this together." C'mon." "We can fix this together." Amity repeated, blushing in Luz's direction. "Hell yeah, we can!" I exclaimed. "Sure, some of these memories must be painful for you, but what happened to you guys? And why are you trying to hide it?" "I just..." Amity began. "What's that?" Luz and I turned around to see nothing. "Look, if you don't wanna talk about it, just say so." Luz said. "No, I actually saw something." Amity explains. "At least I think I did." "If you need us, we'll just be fixing this memory of a ball pit." Luz said. "I don't think that's..." I warned. "It's eggs. It's full of eggs. Why is this memory full of eggs?" Luz asked. "Yeah, that one's hard to explain." Amity replied.
After fixing the egg memory, I helped Luz get her head unstuck from the shell. "We're getting pretty good at fixing these." Amity said. "Yeah." I grunted, removing the egg as Luz gasped for air. "And there's only one last memory to fix." Luz said. "The one you're suspiciously avoiding." "Me? Avoid? No. But let's skip it." Amity stuttered. "Where's Eda's bell?" "Amity, you gotta stop being weird." Luz explains. "We have to fix all of them." "Unless, there's something in there you don't want us to see." I gasped. "Look, we're not here to judge. We're just here to help Willow." "Help?" Amity asked. "All you're doing is prying into your friends' lives. Well did you ever think maybe it's none of your business?" "Maybe it is my damn business, because I love Willow and I don't want to lose her!" I confessed. Luz hugged me with tears in her eyes. "We'll bring her back." Luz said. "I promise." "I don't mean to interrupt, but is something burning?" Amity asked as we looked behind to see the repaired memories caught in flames. A flame creature came from behind the trees and chased us down, burning more memories. "That thing is burning up all the memories!" Luz gasped. "Please call Eda." Amity begged. "I don't wanna be here when it comes out. Luz rings the bell, but nothing happened. "Why won't she answer?!" Amity yelled. "Yeah, she's not super reliable." I explained as the creature came out and we hid again. "Why is it destroying all the photos?" Amity asked. "I don't know." Luz replied. "That one hasn't been burnt, or that one. Amity, that thing isn't after any photo, it's after you!" "What?!" Amity shouted as the thing turned around. "Run! I have an idea." Luz explains, pushing us to the fort memory. "We can't go in there!" Amity warned. "I'm in there." I quickly caught on to Luz's plan. I started to create a large ice glyph in the sand. "Time for a swimming lesson." I said, activating the glyph as the creature slid into the water. "Whoo, teamwork, baby!" Luz shouted, hugging both me and Amity. "Guys." Amity whispered as the inner Willow is revealed in the smoke. "Are you the inner Willow?" I asked. "I was." She replied in anger. "Love. Sadness. Fear. I used to be a being made of all emotions. But ever since you set Willow's mind on fire, all I can feel is anger." "Please, stop!" Luz begged. "But Amity wanted this." The inner Willow said. "Every moment she touched, I'm going to burn." "You're just hurting Willow. Why are you doing this?" Amity asked. "Still haven't figured it out yet? Then I'll show you!" She shouted, tossing Amity into the memory. "You wanted to know everything, right? Then come take a trip down memory lane." "You're saying it all creepy, but I like the sound of..." Luz said as the inner Willow took us inside the memory. "Where are we?" "You said I was hurting Willow. I was just finishing what you started!" She showed a memory of Willow and Amity together, but this one felt different. "You have to get out, Willow. Now!" Young Amity shouted. "Wait, why?" Young Willow asked. "Because, because..." She stuttered. "Is it because I still can't do magic?" She asked. "Amity, I'm sorry I got us in trouble at the beach. I just, I can't get the spells right." "Well, yes, that... That is why. Because you're a weakling." Young Amity said. "You can't do magic, so I don't wanna be your friend. Now, go!" "Then you let your new friends pick on her for years." The inner Willow explains. "All because you thought she was weak. Now, I can erase all that pain. After all, out of sight, out of mind." "Amity!" Luz and I cried as she was about to be erased. "Wait, please!" Amity begged. "Before all this started, there was something else." "Amity." A man said, who I could only assume was her father. "What is Willow doing here?" Her mother asked. "She wasn't on the guest list for a reason." "But, she's my best friend." Young Amity replied. "Nonsense. Blights only associate with the strongest of witchlings." Mr Blight said. "You may choose a new friend from one of the suitable companions we invited." "But, they're mean." She argued. "Just because you work with their parents doesn't mean I have to like them." "Good children don't squabble, dear." Mrs Blight replied. "Your sister didn't listen. Sever your ties with Willow, and if you don't..." "Then we will." Her husband added. Their daughter gasped. "We'll make sure the girl is never admitted into Hexside." Mrs Blight said. "Now, go. And try not to make a scene." "Willow, you were never too weak to be my friend." Amity whimpered, pulling out an invitation made from a real live butterfly. "I was too weak to be yours. I can't take back what I've done, but I can promise you this. I won't let Boscha and her gang pick on you ever again. I'm not actually gonna rip it because it's a real butterfly, but you get the gesture, right?" "I do." Inner Willow replied. "I think Willow should keep her memories of you, the good and the bad." "Me too." Amity agreed. "Then, if it's okay, we still have some work to do." Luz said. Inner Willow nodded and restored the damage.
After fixing the last memory, we waved to the inner Willow. "So, does this mean that you and Willow are buddies again?" I asked. "I'm not sure." Amity replied. "Well, why don't we go see?" Luz wondered, pulling out the bell.
Once Eda brought us back, the living room was trashed. "What the hell happened here?" I asked. "And where's Gus? What did you do with Gus?" Luz added. "The kid's fine." Eda replied. "He's just dead to us." "Those are very mixed messages." Luz said. All of a sudden, Eda's sleep spell was broken and Willow was waking up. "Willow!" I exclaimed, hugging her tight. "Do you remember who I am?" "A friendly scarecrow?" Willow asked. "Just messing. I remember everything." "She's back, folks." Luz announced. "My girl's back! I'm gonna hug you so hard, you'll never forget me again." Amity began heading out the door and waved. "I remember what you did, too." Willow said. "What you did in there... I can't say we're friends, but it's a start." Amity waved and went back home.
