The Intruder
Peter's POV
It was a dark and stormy night. Just kidding. But seriously though, it was brutal outside and the middle of the day. Luz was pretending to make a nature documentary about King. "And here we have the most fearsome creature in the world, the King of Demons, facing his natural enemy, the ducky sock." Luz narrates in an Australian accent, making me laugh. "Where are you now, ducky sock?!" King asked. "So, why did you call us here again?" I asked. "Oh, yeah." King said. "Humans Luz and Peter, you've been so obsessed with witchcraft that you haven't learned anything about my kind. Prepare yourselves for: Demons 101. Demons like me are grim tricksters of the twilight, creatures of sulfur and bone." "And cute little paws." Luz cooed. "And cute little paws, true." King sighed. "We live only to create chaos and misery, our only weaknesses are purified water, and passive-aggressive comments, sometimes." "Aww, you guys are sensitive." I said. "Even demons have inner demons." King explains. "The most powerful demon of all is the Snaggleback, he is a..." Luz began playing with filters on her phone. "Luz, pay attention, this information could save your life someday." "I am so paying attention." Luz lied as it started to thunder. "Uh, oh, looks like it's gonna rain." I said. "I love the rain!" Luz gasped. "Hey, wait!" King warned. As she walked outside, Eda was running towards the house. "Boiling rain, everybody inside now!" Eda yelled, dragging her inside. "That was close, but the important thing is you didn't get hurt." "Yup, not hurt." Luz grunted.
Eda brought us outside by Hooty as we avoid the rain. King put a bandage on Luz's arm. "Look, now we're boo-boo buddies." King said. "Oh my gosh I love you so much." Luz squealed. "What the hell is going on, Eda?" I asked. "Boiling rain." Eda explains, preparing a spell. "A boiling rainstorm on The Boiling Isles?" Luz asked. "The weather here is so fun." "Yeah, we don't have weather." Eda replied. "We have plagues, gorenados, shale hail, painbows." "It's like a rainbow, but looking at it turns you inside out." King explains. I almost threw up and Luz just hid in her cat hoodie. "So, until the boiling rain stops, no one is allowed outside tonight." Eda said. "And if the rain doesn't get you, the Snaggleback will." King teased. "They wander the rains, feeding on boiled tourists." "Well, whatever the case, this force field spell should protect the house from boiling rains, and made up demons." Eda explains. "Hoot! Well hurry it up with that force field, that rain is getting closer to my precious stucco!" Hooty shouted impatiently. "Yeah, yeah, I got it." Eda groaned as her spell covered the entire house perfectly. "Wow! Someday I'd like to be as cool as Eda the Owl Lady, magical, sassy, surprising foxy for her age." Luz said. "Hey, Eda, why do they call you the Owl Lady anyway?" I asked. "Because I'm so wise." Eda replied. "Cuz she coughs up rat bones." Hooty added. "I think it's because she gets distracted by shiny objects." King explains. "No I don't." Eda retorted as King pulled out a shiny pen. "It sparkles and shimmers, it shines and delights, I must have it for my nest." "I'm very confused." I said. "Ugh, that force field really took it out of me." Eda groaned, like she was getting migraines. "Uh oh, moving a little slow." King joked. "Age finally catching up to you?" Eda shoved King's face into the hat he was wearing. "This is perfect. Since we'll be stuck inside the house all night, Eda won't have any excuses not to teach us a spell." Luz cheered. "But, don't you want to finish our lesson?" King asked. "I was gonna let you scratch a demon's tummy, me." "Oh, uh, sorry King, but, magic..." Luz apologized. "Come here, buddy." I replied, giving him amazing belly scratches. "You're such a good boy."
A few minutes later, Luz pulled me away from King to get Eda to teach us a spell. "Oh, Eda, have I told you how rad your fang looks today?" Luz asked. "Whatever it is, no." Eda groaned. "And your hair is like, girl." Luz continued. "I don't think she's in the mood." I said. "I'm not teaching you magic tonight, I'm sleepy, I'm a sleepy little owl." Eda yawned. "Please, Eda, please, how are either of us supposed to earn a witches staff if we don't know any spells? Also so Luz can stop begging?" I asked. "No. Sleep." Eda declined. As I was about to continue a story I've been working on for weeks, I clicked on the pen, forgetting that Eda really liked how shiny it was. Eda came out of her blanket and stared at the pen. "Oh, this?" Luz pointed at the pen. "Ooh!" Eda gasped. "Nope." Luz said, taking the pen from my hand. "Hey, I was using that." I sighed. "Teach us one spell, and you'll get your sparkle thing." "I respect your cunning, but I also hate you for it." Eda groaned. "If you want a witches staff like mine, don't make me repeat myself. Witches' staffs have power embedded into them. But, before one is earned, every witch needs to know how to cast spells on their own. Now, tonight, I will show you how to create light." Luz gasped in excitement. "Cool." I said. "Yawn, who needs another boring spell lesson when you could be learning all the fun ways a demon could kill you?" King suggested. "Look how teethy?" I laughed. "Be quiet, I need to focus." Luz shushed King. "Now, humans think that magic is made out of thin air, but that's stupid, everything comes from something, let me ask you kid, where do you think magic comes from?" Eda asked, looking at me. "From the heart?" I asked. "And you?" Eda asked Luz. "From the heart." Luz replied. "Actually, you're both right." Eda explains, pulling out a picture of a witch's heart. "It comes from a sac of magic bile attached to a witches heart." "Oh, gross!" Luz exclaimed. "Can I keep that?" "No." Eda replied. "Now, everything depends on the spell circle, the bigger the circle, the more powerful the spell. "But, Luz and I are humans, how could we do magic without that bile sac?" I asked. "You know, I'm not actually sure." Eda replied. "What?!" Luz and I asked. "I know witches did magic differently in the past, but I never bothered to figure out how." Eda snorted. "Eda!" Luz exclaimed. "Don't worry, Luz, we'll figure it out, it's just gonna take some time." I reassured her. "Now, I need to lie down." Eda yawned. "That's it? Wait, I need to see you do the circle thingy again, I'll record it on my phone this time." Luz begged, pulling up the camera on her phone and hits record. "Smile, you're on camera, one more spell can't hurt you." "Ugh, fine." Eda groaned. "Now, you see, the spell circle is really key because..." All of a sudden, Eda fell asleep. "Well, looks like one more spell killed Eda." King said as Luz freaked out. "Oh my gosh, my obsession with spells knocked out Eda!" Luz panicked. "I'm a monster!" "I'm sure she's fine, she was feeling a bit weird after casting that spell on the house." I explained. "Bap!" King taps Eda on the head. "Yep, she's out." "We should get help, right?" Luz asked running towards the door. "Luz, wait, stop!" I shouted. "Boiling rains, remember?" King warned. "No, let her try, it'll be funny." Hooty joked as I shut the door. "But what if Eda's dead?!" Luz exclaimed. "Shiny thing, big nest." Eda snored. "Remember when she got her head cut off last week? That woman can survive anything." King explains. "She's probably just tired from staying up all night chasing shrews and voles." "Still, we can't just leave her on the floor." I said.
I helped Luz and King drag Eda upstairs to her bedroom. "Sorry for pushing you, Ms Eda." Luz apologized. "Please don't hurt me when you wake up." "Should I bap her again?" King asked. "Just let her rest, you little goober." I replied as we headed back downstairs
Downstairs, King continued drawing the demons from his book. "Do you think I could borrow that book sometime?" I asked. "Sure." King replied. "For the price of belly scratches." "This is all she does." Luz complained, trying to attempt a spell circle. "Why you gotta be so cryptic, Owl Lady?" "Hey, you wanna know what's really cryptish, let me tell you guys about the most spine-chilling demon, Smootchie Pie the Sweetie Baby!" King exclaimed. "He's a lot more threatening than his name implies." "It looks like a mutated fish." I said. "Not now, King, I want to figure out this spell, but if I don't have a magic sac, what's the point?" Luz declined. "We'll figure it out together, I promise." I sighed. "Why do you both want to learn magic so bad anyway?" King asked. "I was a nobody back home, but becoming a witch is my chance to be someone." Luz explains. "Do you know what it's like to have no one take you seriously?" "Well, every summer, I get sent to a camp by my uncle, I would make friends at these camps, but once it's over, the friends I meet leave for their homes, in a different state, but once I met Luz and we arrived in the Boiling Isles, I felt like she would always be by my side, and I would want these memories to last forever." I replied. "If I help you guys learn that spell, could we finish our lesson?" King sighed. "Oh, yeah, you can teach both of us about demons all week if you help us learn this spell." Luz replied. "Well, she said witches used to do magic differently, so there has to be a way, right? And I have a theory, every day, I notice Eda sneaking drinks of this special elixir, see? Then she always gets a boost of energy, see? I think that's where she gets her powers." King explains. "And I know where to get some." "Really?" Luz asked. "Sí."King replied. "Thank you so much, you're a prince." Luz cheered. "King, I'm King." King corrected. "I'm not sure about this." I said to myself.
Once King came back with the elixir, Luz was so excited. "Wow, I can't believe I'm about to learn magic, real magic, this is historic." Luz said. "I still don't know about this." I warned. Before she could taste that elixir, she was frightened by some thunder and dropped the bottle. "Golden elixir, gone!" Luz panicked. "This is awful." "Who even needs a light spell when we have tons of lamps?" King asked as the lights went out all of a sudden. "You were saying?" I asked sarcastically. "Hooty controls the house lights, he probably just fell asleep." King explains as Hooty was crying for help in the living room. "Hooty!" Luz exclaimed. As we went to the living room to check on Hooty, we saw the door off the hinges and on the floor as an intruder scratched up the door. "Hooty, are you in there?" I asked, trying to wake him up. "Whatever did this escaped into the rain, what could survive that?" "I don't know." Luz replied. "Oh my gosh, the Snaggleback!" King explains. "It feeds during the rains. It must've stumbled across our house and seen us inside." The demon went back into the house. "This is terrifying!" I panicked. "So why do you look so happy?" "Because this could be a lesson. This would be a great way for you and Luz to see a wild demon up close and personal." King replied. "You wanna go towards those creepy sounds? No way!" Luz refused. "What if Eda gets eaten? She's upstairs and defenseless because you knocked her out!" King reminds us as Luz groaned.
We grabbed some stuff from around the house to use as armor, which mostly consisted of old hockey sticks, rubber gloves, pillows, and duct tape. Luz, King, and I snuck upstairs to save Eda from this demon. When we got into Eda's room, she was gone and the window was shattered. "Holy shit, Eda!" I exclaimed. "She got Snaggle-backed!" King shouted. "Eda?" Luz asked, picking up a scratched up pillow. "Slash marks!" "King, you're the demon expert, we need your help." I said. "I'll go get my demon book." King replied, heading back downstairs.
We went downstairs as well to hide from the beast. I saw King running in the hallway and I grabbed him. "Peter, Luz?" King asked. "King, you're okay." Luz sighed in relief. "We're so glad you're safe." "Where did you guys go?" King asked. "We were checking on Eda, and she was gone, and you were gone, Luz also tripped and lost her shoe." I explained. "Oh, hey, you found it!" Luz exclaimed, grabbing her shoe. "What's that?" King asked, pulling a tag off of Luz's foot. "Keeps the curse at bay. An elixir a day keeps the curse at bay!" "Curse?" I asked. "What are you trying to say?" "I was wrong the whole time, that's no Snaggleback!" King explains. "That creature is..." The beast came into the room with a surprisingly familiar face. "Eda?!" We asked. The beast came closer to us, but was screeching around Luz's flashlight.
We ran off to take shelter and Eda was still looking for us. "Oh man, did you see her eyes?" Luz asked. "What happened to her." "Don't you see? The elixir I gave you doesn't give Eda powers." King explains. "It prevents her from turning into that thing. She's turned into a nightmare and it's all my fault. I'm sorry guys, I just wanted you guys to be into demons like you're into magic, I don't have many friends, and no one even pays that much attention to me. I thought maybe if I taught you guys, finally someone would care about creatures like me." "Well, let's finish the lesson." I said, handing him the pen. "Eda's turned into some kind of demon and we need to save her, so who knows more about demons than the best teacher in the world?" King hugged both of us and then grabbed some leaves to draw out a plan. "Okay, she was bigger, covered in feathers, and had giant black eyes." King said. "Demons with black eyes are usually sensitive to light, that's it, light! Luz, use your human wonder rectangle." "I can't, my camera's all blasted." Luz explains. "Don't you have one too, Peter?" King asked. "If you're talking about a cheap uncle, then yes, I have one of those." I replied, pulling out a flip phone. "Then, what about that light spell?" King suggested. "It's not that simple, me and Luz can't just draw circles in midair to make light appear. We're not like Eda." I sighed as Luz pulled out that video of Eda on her phone. All of a sudden, the video was glitching and a pattern was shown in the middle of the spell circle. "There's a pattern in the spell circle!" Luz gasped. "What, where?" King asked. "It looks like this." Luz grabbed a leaf and the pen as she traced the pattern onto the leaf. As she finished the sketch, it became a beautiful ball of light. "It's beautiful." "Whoa, do you think I could do that too?" I asked. Luz handed the pen to me as I traced the design on another leaf and got the same result. "Holy shit, we just did magic!" "We just did magic!" Luz cheered. "Shh! We're not gonna stop anything with something that small." King whispered as Eda roared, scaring us all. "What do we do now?" "Well, Eda said the bigger the spell circle, the more powerful the spell, what if the same thing applies to this pattern?" I asked. "I think we know how to get Eda back." Luz added. "Will you help us, boo-boo buddy?" "I'm kinda over that nickname, but okay." King replied.
King went to go find Eda and distract her with that pen so me and Luz can cast that spell. Once Eda got to the corner, the drawing was ready. "We're sorry, Eda, but this is for your own good!" Luz shouted as we both activated the spell and Eda was returned to normal. "What happened, I have the worst headache and my mouth tastes like roadkill." Eda said, throwing up a creature. "I was looking for that." "Actually, we found an extra one in your closet." King explains. "King? You stole my elixir?" Eda asked. "I ought to break every bone in your..." "Shh! Over there." King whispered, pointing to us drawing that pattern on pieces of paper. "Wow, how are they doing that?" Eda asked. "I don't know, but they did it all on their own." King explains. "Hey, I kinda messed a bunch of things up back there, and I just wanted to say I'm sorry." "Well, you better be, I've got a long list of disgusting chores with your name on it, but it's not completely your fault, I haven't been completely honest with you guys." Eda said. "When I was younger, I was cursed. I don't know exactly how it happened, all I know is that if I don't take my elixir, well, that's why people call me the Owl Lady. No one likes having a curse, but if you take the right steps, it's manageable." "So, are you okay?" I asked. "There's nothing for you guys to worry about. It's all under control, and as long as no one steals my elixir, King, then I'm fine. But, hey, look at this, two humans doing magic. Good on you, kiddos." Eda replied. "We had some encouragement from a great teacher." Luz explains. King blushed. "Hey! Hey! Is anyone there? Hello? Hoot. I'm on the floor. It's cold!" Hooty cried from downstairs. "That voice. That horrific voice!"King shouted. "Wait, I thought Hooty died?" I wondered. "We'll take care of him, you stay in bed."
Eda's POV
After Luz and Peter went to help out Hooty, I rested my eyes for a while. Ever since I was cursed, I've been having flashbacks of the night I was cursed. I was standing right in front of a door. "No, not this memory again." I said. The door opened to reveal a dark shadowy figure. "You. You're the one who cursed me, aren't you? You made me give up my son! Who are you? Who are you?!" I woke up breathing heavily as I went back to sleep.
So I'm gonna be a bit slower on updates because I start my senior year of high school on Monday. I will try to update when I can. -Mal.
