Lost in Language

I wanted to hear Luz read her book again, and she did too. "'Azura, Hecate began, 'Our paths have crossed only in battle. But today, I stand before you, seeking an ally.'" Luz reads. "Luz, you're getting all swoony again." King said. "I know what this is about." I added. "I can't help it. Azura is able to befriend everyone, even her biggest rival." Luz explains. "I wish I had that kind of power." "Rivals are meant to be annihilated, not befriended." King said. "Now keep reading, I've been sucked into your awful fandom." "Okay. "Suddenly, the door swung open."" Luz continued as the door actually swung open. "Ding dong ding, hoot hoot!" Hooty greeted. "The book has come to life, burn it!" King shouted. "I'll go see what it is." I said, heading to the door to see a basket, unsure of what was inside.

I ran into the kitchen to give the basket to Eda. "Eda, you got a package." I explained. "It looks like a gift basket." "Probably an offering." Eda said. "Ah, being the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles has its perks." King took off the cloth to reveal a sleeping baby. "Uh, is that a fucking child?" I asked. "Mmm, fresh meat." King said. "Nope, not doing that." Luz refused. "Witches eating babies is so 1693." Eda explains. "What is this?" "There's a note." King replied, taking a note from the basket. "Take care of my child til morning. Yi Yi." "Nope, babies are awful, not happening." Eda complained. "You will be handsomely rewarded. XOXOXOX, The Bat Queen." King reads the rest of the note. "Who's the Bat Queen?" I asked. "She's the wealthiest demon on the Boiling Isles, get in with her and you're set for life." Eda explains. "So, we keep this thing alive for a few hours and we get paid, easy." "Our greatest adventure yet!" Luz exclaimed. "Learning about love and life through a child's eyes." "Not you." Eda replied. "You and Peter have to return the books I checked out to the library. I don't want them getting a cut of the loot."

Luz and I were headed to the library. "Holy shit! This library is huge." I said. Once we got inside, the books were levitating to a counter. "Coffee stains, these are Eda's, aren't they?" The librarian asked. "Heh, that was a crazy night." Luz explains. "I'll put them on her tab." The librarian sighed. "By the way, we're closing early for the Wailing Star meteor shower." "What's that?" I asked. "You're in a library, read a book." The librarian replied. "I am in a library, I will read a book." Luz said.

After taking a look around the library, we heard a familiar voice. "What do you think you're doing?" The voice asked. "Peter, we've been caught!" Luz panicked. "Pretend to be a book!" "You really think that's going to work?" I asked. "'We're your friends, and we wanna help,' said the tin boy with a yelp." The person reading was Amity. "Otabin smiled and paced the floor. 'I've never had real friends before.'" "Amity reading to kids?" Luz wondered, pulling me into the kids corner, making sure Amity wouldn't see us. "She seems so nice and smiley." I said. "Peter, maybe we can befriend her like Azura befriended her rival." Luz gasped. "Are you fucking serious?" I asked. As soon as she finished dismissing the kids, Amity spotted both of us and rolled her eyes. "Ugh, you two." Amity scoffed. "Amity, reading to kids?" Luz asked. "Looks like this sour lemon drop has a hidden sweet center." "It's for extra credit. Don't get your leggings in a bunch." Amity explains. "Hey, Peter and I could help with the kids." Luz suggested. "We could all take turns reading, and do voices." "Ooh, I do the best monster voice." I said. "I pissed off a bunch of kids at camp." "Humans! Do you see me going to the Owl Shack and bugging you while you fry up owls?" Amity asked. "Ugh, okay, I don't really know what you do there, but every time you two come near me, I get in trouble. Just leave me alone and go hang out with my sister or something." "I'm sorry." Luz apologized. "So much for befriending rivals." "You gonna let her get to you like that?" Someone asked. We look behind to see two older students in the illusion track, just like Gus. "Who the hell are you?" I asked. "Well-wishers on a mission." The boy replied. "A noble quest." His sister added. "Watch this." The boy said. "Hey, Mittens, Mom says stop forgetting your lunch! And stop being a jerk to your friends." "They're not my friends, they're Alexa's." Amity grunted, grabbing her lunch. "Yeah, makes sense." The sister joked. "They seem too cool for you." "We are?" Luz asked. "You can leave now, all of you!" Amity groaned.

Amity's older siblings took us around the library to chat. "So, you're the humans we've heard so much about." Amity's brother commented. "Boots won't shut up about you two." "I'm Emira, and this is Edric." Her sister introduced. "We're Amity and Alexa's older siblings. We heard how you guys embarrassed her at the school and at the witch covention last week. No wonder she hates you." "I know, but we didn't mean any of it." Luz explains. "I thought we were as cool as cucumbers, but we're as sour as pickles." "Don't waste your time with Mittens." Emira said. "Me and Ed, we're way more fun. I guess Boots is fun too."

We joined in with Edric and Emira on their mischief. That is, until we got kicked out. "Amity's even more pissed at us now!" I laughed. "I didn't think that was possible." "No, when Mittens gets mad, she looks like this." Edric explains, holding his breath until his face was red. "Whoa, I almost passed out." "You're pretty fun, humans." Emira complimented. "So, hey, we're coming back tonight. There's a certain book we forgot to check out." "And bonus, rumor has it that the Wailing Star is supposed to unlock some rare magical event. You in, friends?" Edric added. "Sure." Luz replied. "I guess so." I added. "Great, meet back here at midnight." Edric explains. "See you, Luz and Peter." "Bye!" Luz called out. "This is great, Peter. First we befriend the other siblings, then we befriend the Amity." "Are you sure about this?" I asked, walking with her to the Owl House. "You can't force someone to like you."

Once we returned, Eda was rocking the baby to sleep. "We just had the best day!" Luz exclaimed. "Cool teens like us. Call us library books, because they were checking us out." "Wow, Eda, you look like you could be an amazing mother." I commented. "Say that again and I steal your tongue." Eda said. "How can you say that around this cute little baby?" Luz asked as the baby multiplied. One of them even started breathing fire on the couch. "Parenting sure looks rewarding." I said, running out the door with Luz. "Enjoy your life lessons. Byeee!"

Luz and I decided to hide out around the library to wait for Edric and Emira. "You guys ready?" Edric asked. "It says no trespassing, but I'm allergic to the rules." "And dairy." Emira added. "Wow. Okay, just expose me." Edric grunted. Emira pulled out some kind of map and magically unlocked the door. "Holy shit!" I gasped. Luz and I followed the twins inside. "Standing in a dimly lit lobby." Luz said. "You guys know how to party." "There!" Edric shouted. "The Wailing Star!" As the star passed, books began glowing a bright green. "The books are all glowy." Luz explains, opening a book, releasing a bunch of animals. "Wow! The Wailing Star magicked the books to life!" Edric exclaimed. As Luz closed the book, all the animals vanished. That gave all of us the same idea.

Once we had our fun, I found Luz reading the same book that Amity read to those kids earlier. "Guys, check this out!" Edric called. "Look what we discovered." Emira added, opening a book and added legs to a duck picture. "Your turn." "I don't know." Luz hesitated, then sighed. "I can't do it." "Here, let me help." Edric said, drawing an angry face on the character's face. Luz quickly closed the book. "I don't wanna see it!" Luz cried. "Whatever." Emira rolled her eyes and grabbed our arms. "We didn't come here just to doodle, c'mon."

Before I knew it, we were in the romance section. "The romance section?" I asked. "That's totally lame." Luz added. "Unless you guys are into it?" "I think I'm into this one." Edric said, revealing a secret passage. "Wow, your clubhouse is like my ultimate secret hideaway!" I exclaimed. "We don't hang out in a library." Edric joked. "This is Amity's secret hideaway." Emira added. "Mittens has gotten too full of herself. She keeps tattling on us when we cut class." Edric explains. "Why can't she be like Boots?" "She needs to learn not to mess with people like that, so we're going to find her diary." Emira said. "And then post the pages all around school for everyone to see." Edric added. "What? Isn't that taking it a bit too far?" Luz asked. "No, see, we're her family, it's tough love." Emira replied. "She needs to learn to lighten up." "What if people read these pages and think it's Alexa writing these?" I questioned. "You do realize they're identical twins." "Like I said, tough love." Emira replied. "Well, I don't see any diaries in here." Luz explains. "Nope, nothing." I added. "Let's just leave." "Wait, are those Good Witch Azura books 1-4?" Luz asked. "You get these on The Boiling Isles? So majestic." "Is this cover hand drawn?" I wondered, opening the book, turning out to be Amity's diary. "I saw those humans again." Amity wrote. "The diary." I panicked. "Alexa told me more about them. I may have overreacted. I don't want to come off as cruel, but, I just can't show weakness." "What've you got there, guys?" Edric asked. "Nothing, just Good Witch Azura 5, where she goes through her goth phase." Luz lied. Emira used her magic to take the diary from us. "This is it." The twins smiled. "Luz, Peter, were you hiding this from us?" Emira asked. "You see how she treats people, and how she treats you two. "Sure, Amity can be a snotty bitch, but no one deserves this." I replied, grabbing the diary. "These are her private thoughts, let's put them back." Luz added, fighting for the book until a few of the pages were everywhere. As I helped Luz pick them up, Amity saw everything. "Really?!" Amity grunted. "It's not what it looks like." I explained. Edric and Emira could do nothing but laugh. "You two are the worst!" Amity shouted. "But you two, I've been trying to figure out what your deal is. Are you a poser? A nerd? Alexa was wrong. You're both bullies." "Amity!" Luz called as she ran away in tears. "Mittens killed the fun." Emira sighed. "Again. Oh, well, we're heading out to go goblin tipping, wanna come?" Edric asked. "You're just gonna leave?" I asked. "Yeah, with you guys." Emira replied. "Look, you guys are cool, but we need to go talk to Mittens, I mean, Amity." Luz said, running towards her. "Amity, wait!" "First, you guys embarrass me, now you want to be my friends?" Amity asked. "I don't get you, just pick a side!" "Please, just listen." I begged. "Just go away before things somehow get worse." Amity said. All of a sudden, the character, Otabin approached us with it's angry face. "Holy shit." I whispered. "With claws and fangs and breaking bones, I found a friend to make my own." Otabin said, grabbing Amity with him. "Luz, Peter!" Amity screamed. "Amity!" Luz shouted. "Wait, didn't Edric and Emira draw that face on Otabin?" I asked. Luz looked down at Amity's diary. She had an idea.

Once Luz finished drawing, we were on our way to rescue Amity, who was tied to a giant book. "Azura?" Amity asked. "Close." Luz replied, dressed up like Azura. "Is it drawn okay? I kind of interpreted the descriptions." "Better than anything I could draw." I said. "Luz! Peter!" Amity shouted. "Ah, Right." We said in unison. "The good witch Luzura grabs her trusty staff and her partner, Sir Peter drew his sword." A staff and a sword were brought to existence. "Alright, beloved work of children's fiction. Let go of her." Luz demanded. As we started attacking, Otabin grabbed the diary and closed it, making everything disappear. "Not an Azura fan, are you?" I asked. Otabin grabbed us and sewed us to his book. "Oh, fuck you for putting me in the spine!" "Making friends, taking friends, never be without my friends." Otabin said. "You fiend! You can rhyme "friends" with "friends."" Luz explains. "Great work, Luzura and Sir Peter." Amity said sarcastically. "Hey, we were trying to save you!" I argued. "Well, it doesn't matter, we're all gonna be stuck together forever." Amity grunted. Luz moved her sewed up arm and moved the page a bit. "No we aren't." Luz explains. "Follow my lead." She knocked over the book so we could use our legs to escape. "Now what?" Amity asked. "I don't know." Luz replied. "I didn't even think that would work. I was all like, ahhh!" All of a sudden, I heard someone chuckling, and that someone was Amity. Luz smiled until Otabin's needle was stabbed into the book. "Okay, just fucking kill me!" I shouted. As Otabin dragged the book closer, Amity grabbed one of the shelves and broke free, leaving me and Luz attached to the book. "You squirm and fight, yet scream and shout." Otabin said, sewing both of our legs to the book. "But friendship always will win out!" That's when Amity rode a library cart and crashed into him. She ran to me and Luz, setting us free. "Third dimension, how I've missed you." Luz said. "Oh God, I thought I was going to choke to death!" I gasped for air. "We must stay friends until the end, there is no tear I cannot mend." Otabin said, grabbing Luz. "The drawing." I remembered. "Luz has to right a wrong." Amity wrote in the giant book, making a magic eraser appear. "Luz, quick!" I shouted, tossing her the eraser. Once the drawing was erased, Otabin was changed back to normal. "I'm so sorry, I don't know what came over me." Otabin apologized. "Hey, it's okay, we're still friends." Amity replied as Luz closed Otabin's book.

Once the spell was worn off, we headed outside. "What an adventure. Thanks for helping clean up." I thanked. "This never happened." Amity replied. "Wait, this doesn't make up for reading your diary, but would you want to borrow this?" Luz asked, taking out her Azura book. "We noticed you only had up to 4." Amity takes the book from Luz. "Thank you." She replied. "Maybe Alexa was right. Maybe you aren't bullies. I haven't exactly been the friendliest witch either. I'll think on that."

Once we returned to The Owl House, we saw Eda and King sleeping with the babies. "Ding Dong!" Hooty shouted. The Bat Queen came inside to get the babies. "Whoa, you must be mama." I said. "Yes, Mama is I, and I is the Bat Queen." The Bat Queen explains, calling for the babies. "For troubles. Eda is owed one." Eda woke up once The Bat Queen left. "Aww, sweet babies." Eda said. "Babies? Where are the babies?!" Luz used her hands to tell her what happened. "Aww, and I just taught Junior how to pick locks too." "Your night looks very successful, look at all the money you made." Luz commented. "And look at this cool whistle that scary woman gave you. I'd wash it before you use it." "Yeah, we did it all for the money." Eda sighed. "I miss my babies!" King sobbed. "Eda, that reminds me, we actually got you something from the library." I said, taking out a book titled, Coping with Empty Nest Syndrome, and handed it to her. "Thanks, kiddos." Eda replied. "So, how was your night?" "Good, then bad, then maybe good." Luz explains. "Hey, you wanna hear about my night?" Hooty asked. All of us groaned. "That's not a thing anyone ever wants." King replied.
