Adventures in the Elements
I just finished my breakfast one morning and I saw Luz lying on the couch with King. "Morning." I greeted with a yawn. "Looking at the Hexside brochure again?" "Yup. Hey, listen to this." Luz replied. "Hey, less reading, more scratching." King said. "Sorry, now that Peter and I will be students at Hexside, I want to learn all about it." Luz explains. "I've got a new crush and her name is..." "Amity?" I interrupted. "Nope, education." Luz corrected. Eda busted the door open. "Hey, freeloaders." Eda said. "Guess what today is?" "Is it your birthday?" I asked. "Is it my birthday?" King questions. "It's my birthday." Hooty announced. "No. It's Human Treasure Day!" Eda exclaimed as Owlbert came through the portal with some more junk. "Ooh, fresh garbage." "Ooh, gimme, gimme, gimme!" King cheered, grabbing a teddy bear from the pile. "Yes! Another worthy addition to my army of terror. Truly terrifying." "Hey, kiddos, your trash pile is getting cold, while mine's getting hot." Eda said. "I've never seen such an extravagant earring." "Eda, did you by any chance send Owlbert to my uncle's house?" I asked. "No, why do you ask?" Eda replied. "Because most of the stuff in this pile is mine." I explained. "Peter can have my trash." Luz said. "Oh, did you know that Hexside was built on the bones of its rival school? One it literally conquered?" "Yes, I know all those things, I went there." Eda replied. "It was the most harrowing period of my life." "Can you imagine it? Me and Peter in the halls of Hexside, studying with Willow and Gus and maybe even Alexa and Amity." Luz daydreams. "Amity! Oh, cramity! We're supposed to meet so I can get my Azura book back. C'mon, Pete! We can tell her about Hexside!" Luz grabs my arm and drags me out the door. "We love you guys."
Luz and I met up with Amity at the market. Looking around, we saw Amity near the entrance. "Hey, Amity!" Luz called. "Luz and Peter are finally here." "Hi, guys." Edric and Emira greeted. "Blights!" I shouted as I fell to the ground with Luz. "Are you guys okay?" Alexa gasped. "Edric, Emira, stop bothering them." Amity scolded, helping Luz off the ground as Alexa helped me. "Sorry, Luz and Peter, they insisted on coming for some reason." "Because we love you, baby sister." Emira teased in a baby voice. "They've been extra protective and nice to her to make up for the library incident." Alexa explains. "And we still apologize every day." Edric added. "In any case, here's your book." Amity said, returning the book to Luz. "So, what'd you think?" Luz asked. "It was fine." Amity replied. "So fine you drew yourself with Malingale the Mysterious Soothsayer?" I wondered. Amity quickly cast a spell circle on the drawing in embarrassment. "This is great!" Luz exclaimed. "Maybe we can all start an Azura Club at school when we're classmates." "When we're what?" Amity and Alexa asked in unison. "Surprise!" I exclaimed. "Luz and I are enrolling at Hexside." "Oh, uh, sorry, but to be in our class, you each need to take a placement exam, and prove that you've mastered two spells." Alexa said. "I know you have your light thing. Do you know anything else?" "Placement exam? Spells?" Luz asked. "We're in deep shit." I whispered to Luz. "Quit giving them a hard time, Boots." Emira said. "Of course they know two spells, right, guys?" Edric asked. Luz and I looked at each other nervously. "Yeah, of course we know two spells." Luz lied. "Because if you don't, they'll put you both in the baby class." Amity added. "Hell no, Peter Yenkins ain't no fucking baby." I complained. "Ooh, brain idea!" Edric shouted. "What if we all train together." Emira suggested. "We can show off what we know." "What do you say, guys?" Alexa asked. "If you don't want to, that's okay, too." "Actually, we have other training plans in a very faraway place." Luz lied. "Which we have to go to right now." I added. "Bye."
We were freaking out on the way back to The Owl House. "Eda!" Luz cried as I busted the door open. "There it is." Eda sighed. "Eda, you need to teach us a new spell, right now." I begged. "Sorry, kiddos. These vegetables won't cook themselves, yet." Eda declined, pouring a potion on some raw vegetables. "Alright, everybody in the pot." The veggies grew arms and legs, running away from the pot. "Why do I always think that's gonna work?" "But we need to know two spells to get into decent classes at Hexside." Luz explains, pulling out a glyph from her pocket. "Both of us can make light glyphs. But at the end of the day, that's the only spell we know." "And who's fault is that?" Eda asked. "Yours." I replied. "Ha! Yup, got me there." Eda laughed. "Just teach us a spell now, any spell." Luz begged. "It can be the darkest evil." I whispered. "Well, I have been researching my texts on wild magic, but I'm much too busy right now." Eda explains, using that same excuse. "Come on, Eda! You're the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles." I groaned. "How would it look if both of your apprentices got thrown in the shitty baby class?" "Hmm. Weaponizing my pride. Well played." Eda complimented. "Well, in that case, this looks like a job for magic boot camp." "Did someone say boot camp?" King asked. "I agree to run it. We'll rise at dawn. Each of you will carry me on your back as I yell hateful things about your performance." "Nope, you'll have no part in this." Eda said. "Luz and Peter need to focus, and I can't have them go all weird when you do something adorable." "I am NOT adorable!" King shouted, stomping his foot angrily. "Aww, he stamped his little foot." Luz cooed. King screeched and slammed the door behind him. "Now, no time to waste. You'll have to follow my teachings exactly." Eda explains. "We gotta go somewhere special." "Hell yeah!" I cheered. "A place where magical energy just flows." Eda continued. "Yes!"
Eda took me and Luz to this place on the Isles with tons of snow. "The earliest witches came to the Knee to develop their magic, drawn to its natural power." Eda explains. "It's beautiful!" Luz gasped. "I'm freezing my ass off!" I complained. "Though, it's not without its dangers." Eda said, showing us a giant monster with white fur. "The Slitherbeast. Don't worry, if you don't mess with him, he won't mess with you."
We followed Eda to a somewhat small space to train. "Here's where we'll set up shop." Eda said. "I can see Luz and I learning our second spell here." I commented. "Right? Gorgeous views, magic in the air." Luz added. "And best of all, we're completely alone." "Watch out!" Eda yelled as she protected us from an incoming blast of magic. "Sorry whoever's over there." Alexa apologized. "Oh shit." I whispered. "Forget the spell, just make me disappear." Luz panicked. "Well, okay, but I've got a 60/40 record of making you reappear." Eda warned. "Oh, you meant, Ah nevermind." "Hi, Luz. Hi, Peter." Edric greeted. "Hey, it's us." "Okay, let's do this." I whispered. "Hey, guys." Luz chuckled nervously. "Who are they?" Eda asked. "Be cool." Luz whispered. "If they know we haven't mastered two spells, they'll think we belong in the baby class." "What's that about the baby class?" Amity asked. "Only that it's for babies and these kiddos clearly aren't babies." Eda replied. "Nailed it." "Amity." Luz said, slipping on some ice. "What are you doing here?" "Alexa and I are here to train." Amity explains. "We're both trying to beat Ed and Em's highest score on the exam." Alexa added. "Aw, Mittens, Boots, that's impossible." Emira joked. "They both still need a training wand to learn new spells." Edric added. "So, what are you working on? Something powerful?" "Yup, powerful spells, me and Luz, working on one that'll make Bump lose his shit." I lied. "Eda's a pretty incredible teacher." "Kids, I shall now teach you how to identify different types of snow, by taste." Eda said. "Well, go on. Eat the snow." "Is this some kind of special magic?" Emira asked. "I don't think the Owl Lady wants to show us any of her powerful spells." Amity said. Eda swallowed the snow and got a brain freeze. "See you around, humans." Emira waved, grabbing Edric and leaving us alone. "Good luck with your, uh, training." "Eda! Can you please take this seriously?" Luz asked. "You need to take me seriously." Eda explains. "Go taste snow without my guidance. See where it gets you." Luz frowned as I sighed. "Oh, don't worry, kiddos. If you listen to me, soon, you'll be doing stuff like that." Eda said, pointing at Amity using a training wand. "And it won't be with some wack training wand, it'll be the real deal. But you have to trust me, okay?" "Okay, I trust you." I replied. "Me too." Luz added. "We've covered snow. So, now it's on to smelling moss." Eda explains, sniffing moss. "Now the trick is you really need to get it up in there." Luz frowned again.
After about an hour of tasting and smelling random items, Luz and I were done. "Okay, we've identified the smells of three different rocks, sorted all the twigs from big to small." Luz groaned. "Not to mention I found your glove, and your hand." I added. "Ah, I was wondering where that thing went." Eda said, grabbing her hand. "So, what now?" Luz asked, looking over to see the Blight siblings training. "Hey. I know my lessons seem weird, but this is what wild magic is all about. Making a connection with nature." Eda explains. "The earliest witches understood that. Human witches need to understand it too. You kiddos want to learn a second spell?" "With all my heart." Luz replied. "Me too." I added. "Then you have to learn from the island." Eda said, walking away from us. "Now, look and think about what the island is trying to tell you." I close my eyes and feel relaxed by the sound of the wind.
While my eyes were shut, I saw what looked like a bedroom, like I was having a vision. "What the hell?" I wondered. Everything looked pretty blurry, but I heard someone reading an incantation to a sleeping child. I was confused about why I was seeing this. Before I could get a clearer view of the vision, it faded away.
I woke up on the big rock I sat on, except I looked next to me to see that Luz was gone. "Peter? What are you up to?" Eda asked. "Learning from the island, like you said." I replied. "I don't know where Luz went, though. She was right next to me a second ago. Shit. Do you think I made her disappear?" "Oh, no." Eda groaned, realizing what Luz might've done. "Peter, come with me."
Eda and I quickly ran to a ledge where Luz was using Amity's training wand. "I did magic! Without drawing anything." Luz cheered. "This thing is the coolest." "Luz, stop!" I shouted. "Hold it right there!" Eda exclaimed. "What are you doing with that?" "I'm doing magic." Luz scoffed. "What would you have me do? Eat more snow? Lick a rock?" "Okay, so maybe my methods are unique, but so is yours and Peter's magic." Eda said. "Connecting to the island can help you. That wand can't." "Luz, I think Eda's right. We should be taking our training one step at a time, not rely on some wand that holds God knows how much power." I warned. "Well, it's already helped me." Luz snapped. "Just watch what I can do." She cast a spell, only to lose control over it and the spell ended up hitting the Slitherbeast. "You've angered the Slitherbeast." Eda gasped. "Will it accept a heartfelt apology?" Luz asked. "Doubt that." I replied. The Slitherbeast charges toward us as Eda pushed us both aside, which also got her captured. "Eda!" I cried. "Luz, Peter!" Alexa gasped. "What did we miss?" Edric asked. "And what are you doing with my wand?" Amity added, taking her stuff back. "Mittens, we've got bigger problems." Emira said as the Slitherbeast came closer. "Aw, he's so cute. Can we keep him?" "It's no bat, but we can try." Edric replied. The older twins cast a spell circle and held down the beast. "You got it, now finish it off!" Eda yelled. "I got it!" Amity shouted, using the wand, only for it to lose charge. "Did you use this all up?" "I didn't know." Luz explains. "Don't worry, Eda!" Alexa shouted, casting a spell circle, only for it to backfire. "That didn't turn out the way I planned." Come on, guys!" Emira strained. "Do those powerful moves you were talking about." Edric said. "But, we don't actually know any." I confessed. The Slitherbeast grabbed the Blight siblings, but out of all of them, Amity was the only one able to escape from its grasp. "Edric, Emira, Alexa! No!" Amity cried. The beast ran off with its four prisoners. "What the hell are we supposed to do now?" I asked. "I am going after them." Amity explains. "You two just stay here." "But the beast has Eda." Luz said. "And because of you, it also has my brother and sisters." Amity argued. "Now stay put. You'll only get hurt." Amity made a cage around me and Luz to stop us from following her and she runs after the beast. "Amity! Wait!" Luz exclaimed, touching the cage, only for it to zap her hand. "Stupid island!" I complained, kicking a huge rock. "Crap, that hurt." Luz sat on the rock and sighed. "She was supposed to teach us magic." Luz sighed, handing me some paper from her notepad to draw light glyphs as it began to snow. "But we'll never learn more than this." After both of us activated the glyph, a constellation of a light glyph appeared in the night sky. "Hold up, Luz." I said, pointing at the sky. "Is that a light glyph?" "But what does it mean?" Luz wondered. A small snowflake landed on my glove. The inside of it looked like a pattern slightly similar to the light glyph.
"It means, magic is a gift from the island." I replied, tracing the pattern in the snow, activating it to reveal some ice. "It means, magic is everywhere." Luz traced an enlarged version of the glyph, grabbing my hand. "Magic is everywhere!" Luz shouted as both of us jumped on the ice glyph, launching ourselves out of Amity's trap and landed in the snow. "Luz, our second spell!" I cheered. "Thank you, snow. Thank you, island. "Thank you, Eda." "Eda!" Luz gasped. "Pete, we have to save her."
We found a cave where the beast lived. We found Eda, Edric, Emira, and Alexa stuck on the wall. "Don't worry, we'll be fine." Emira said as decayed bodies fell from above. "Nope, we're gonna die." Edric whined. "That's right. Death is here, bitches." I said behind a skull. "Just kidding. Luz and Peter are here." "Kids, get out of here!" Eda ordered. "I'm just gonna sneak away when the thing starts eating the twins." "Wait, what?!" Emira shouted. Edric gasped. "I'm also a twin." Alexa said. "Does this involve me, too?" "Don't worry, Eda. I get it now." Luz explains. "I was so obsessed with learning a second spell, I didn't listen to you or Peter. But now we're gonna save you." "Well, at least I got to see her misplaced confidence one last time." Eda sighed.
Luz and I snuck up behind Amity to help free her siblings and Eda. "Luz! Peter!" Amity exclaimed with a whisper. "Hello." Luz greeted. "Sup." I added. "How'd you guys get past the barrier?" Amity asked. "Magic, literally!" Luz cheered. "Nevermind that." I said. "We're gonna have to work as a team if we wanna save everyone." Luz whispered the plan to Amity as the beast was looking hungry near its prisoners. I ran to the opening of the cave to distract the beast. "Hey, asshole! Over here!" I shouted, leading the beast out of the cave, while Amity went to free everyone. Once I was outside with Luz and the beast, We activated an ice glyph, launching it in the air. Before the beast could attack again, Eda cast a sleep spell on it. "Now that's our mentor!" Luz and I cheered. "Did you see? We learned our second spell!" "I saw." Eda said. "Nice work, kiddos." "You showed some real bravery in there, sis." Alexa compliments her twin. "Yeah, nice work, kiddo." Edric and Emira teased. "Ugh, stop!" Amity snapped. "So, it looks like we'll all be in the same class." "Azura book club?" Luz asked. "AZURA BOOK CLUB?!" "As long as it's a secret club, okay?" Amity whispered. "It's not a secret!" Edric called. "We're gonna tell everyone!" Emira added. "Alright, your adorable banter is literally making me sick." Eda sneezed. "Let's go home already." "On it, teach." I replied, drawing a glyph and launched us back home.
Once we returned, the living room looked like a dumpster. The floor was buried underneath stuffing. "Private Hooty, today when the felt flew, you showed grit and determination that were instrumental in securing our victory." King said to Hooty. "May I just say, it has been an honor to be your commander." "Sir, the honor is all mine." Hooty replied. "Private, our hearts have been touched by fire." King cried, hugging Hooty. "What the heck did you two get into?" Eda asked. "Um, excuse me, we're having a moment here." King explains. "You'll never understand what we've been through together!" Hooty shouted. "Never! Never!" "Ugh, moment ruined." King groaned. "I will be haunted by my actions forever." Hooty said. "Hoot! Hoot!
