The Case of the Purloined Headdress
It was yet another danger-filled week for Amy Wild Elk, the Spring Valley Reservation’s only teenage sleuth. She had knocked out and hog-tied grave-robber Mason Albrecht by the time officials arrived on the scene. “Here’s your culprit,” she said, kicking the bound troublemaker lightly in the ribs.
“Well, aren’t you the clever raccoon?” said Sheriff Tom Running Brook, talking down at her.
“You really are your father’s daughter, kid,” said her uncle, District Attorney Jerry Stands Proud. ”You solved this mystery all by yourself!”
But Amy hadn’t solved the case. Not really. Granted, she figured out who stole the priceless war bonnet from her great-grandfather’s defiled tomb. And in the process, she even discovered how it connected to a bet-fixing scam at Casa Grande, the local casino. But what she couldn’t reveal – for lack of solid proof – was how all of this was linked to a massive land-grab conspiracy involving Chief Earl Strong Arrow and the Sheriff’s benefactor, real estate mogul R.J. McGraw.
Amy wanted so badly to describe it all: breaking into the hideout off Highway 44, the chase through Tetrault Woods, the confrontation at the burial grounds, and the showdown that just happened. She wanted to reveal how maybe – just maybe – she got a little help from the White Bison Spirit.
Instead, she filed a report at the station house, under Running Brook’s supervision. After that, she and Uncle Jerry went to the Dine-N-Go for an early dinner. Amy found little of the usual joy in eating her frybread and succotash, as if the flavors and spices were being overwhelmed by the bitter taste of an injustice left unresolved... for now, anyway.
