TW: mentions of alcohol poisoning, panic attacks
"Roman," Virgil muttered as he spotted his brother walking through the automatically opening doors. He stood up from the stiff leather chair he was in and ran across the waiting room to where his brother had entered.
"H-Hi Romano."
"Heya Verge." They shared a quick hug, then started walking back to where Virgil was previously sitting. "I'm sorry. I came as soon as I could," Roman apologized as he gently squeezed Virgil's forearm.
"You're fine. They won't even let me in yet." Roman glared over at the reception desk before turning back to his brother. "You don't look too good." Virgil chuckled darkly and collapsed into the chair he had been sitting in before.
"I've been in the hospital for almost 24 hours. What do you expect?"
"Where's Remy?"
"With the kids. He said he wouldn't be able to look at my mother after what she did to me.."
"And you can?" Virgil's shoulders collapsed slightly and his head fell onto his lap. He whispered something with a low voice. So low that Roman couldn't understand a word he was saying. "What?" Virgil lifted his head again and a sad smile was on his lips while silent tears streaked down his cheeks.
"I don't know." He laughed and Roman thought he might be going mad. "I don't know I don't know what the hell I'm doing here or why I even care." He laughed again and threw his head back onto his shoulders.
"Virgil, snap out of it," Roman pleaded as he placed his hand on his brothers shoulder.
"I don't know what I'm even doing here." It was then that Roman noticed Virgil wasn't laughing, he was crying. "I don't know why she didn't love me," he hiccuped and his head fell forward again onto Roman's shoulder. "I don't know what I did to make her hate me."
"Because she was messed up Virgil."
"Does that mean I'm not able to love my kids," he croaked out as he ran his hand under his eyes. "Does being messed up mean that you have to take it out on others because you can't deal with your own problems?" Roman sighed and stroked Virgil's hair. Streaks of faint purple still evident from his teenage years.
"No. Because unlike her," Roman's voice was full of venom and he practically spat out the pronoun that referred to Virgil's mother. "You're strong and you're an amazing person." Virgil shrugged and silent tears slipped down his cheeks.
"Am I a good person though?" Roman turned to face his brother with a shocked expression on his face.
"You're kidding right? You're the second most loving, most kindhearted people I know." Virgil lifted his head and drew his eyebrows together.
"S-Second?" Roman smirked and wiped a tear away from Virgil's face.
"Come on, you know Dad takes first and he's ground me if I said otherwise." Virgil chuckled and this time, it sounded natural and happy.
"You're a grown man scared of being grounded Romano. You've made it so far in life." Roman also chuckled and leaned back in his seat, stretching his long legs in front of himself.
"Wanna know the reason you're here Verge?"
"Because my terrible biological mother is dying of alcohol poisoning?" Roman chuckled and reached his hand out to Virgil's.
"Well I mean, that is a contributing factor. But it's not the main reason." Virgil tilted his head at his older brother and grabbed his warm, soft hand. Roman gave it a light squeeze and smiled. "It's because you're compassionate and care for others. You're forgiving and try to see the best in people, even though you claim to be a pessimist."
"I am."
"I'm trying to compliment you..You truly are an angsty emo nightmare."
"That I am..." Virgil looked down and started rubbing his thumb along Roman's index finger. "K-Keep going."
"With pleasure...Where was I?"
"Forgiving people."
"You don't know why you're here but I do. It's because even though she was an awful person. You would never dream of her dying alone and certainly not without getting a chance to say goodbye." Virgil's eyes teared up again and he leaned onto Roman's strong shoulder. "Because you're a good person."
"Thank you for coming Roman."
"Hey..What are older brothers for?"
////////// time skip brought to you by brotherly love //////////
"Virgil Sanders?" Roman looked down at his sleeping brother and frowned. He didn't want to wake him up just so he could say goodbye to an awful woman. But he knew this is what his brother wanted. Roman shook Virgil lightly and whispered, "they're ready for you Vee." Virgil sat up, his back popping obnoxiously.
"What if I changed my mind," he complained, and Roman couldn't tell if he was being serious or sarcastic.
"Then you don't have to."
"Yes," he stood up with a groan and smirked feebly. "Yes I do." With that Roman nodded and stood up too.
"Well then, let's go Verge." They walked up to the desk in silence, their footsteps falling at the same time.
"Hi Love, are you Virgil," a kind woman with bright eyes questioned as she finished typing something on her computer.
"Y-Yes." She nodded and tapped a button on the phone and held it up to her ear.
"Hi. Yeah I'm sending him in." She placed the phone again and smiled up at Virgil. "Alrighty. Go right on in that door. Who are you?"
"Roman, his brother and I will be going with Virgil." She nodded and picked up the phone again.
"Hi, there's another guy coming back too. Family. Yup. Alright. Go on ahead you two." Once again they walked in silence, Virgil's hands clasped tightly at his sides as he threw nervous glances around the brightly, grossly lit hallway.
"Second room on your left," some nurse instructed them without looking up from his clipboard. Virgil took a deep breath, muttering something under his breath and wringing his hands together anxiously.
"You're sure you want to do this?" Virgil tried to swallow the lump in his throat and nodded, too quickly. "You don't-"
"Rom-Roman please." They got to the second door and Virgil paused, his throat closing. Breathing becoming a difficult task. He reached out, his hand shakily pulling down on the cold door knob. Roman grabbed Virgil's shoulder and followed him into the small room.
"There's my bab- "
"No. I came here for one reason and one reason only." Roman stared at the thin, pale woman laying uselessly in the hospital bed. He was shocked. Besides the dark bags under her eyes and thin, straw like hair she looked, healthy. Normal even. "And it's not to forgive you."
"Virgil, I-I never wanted your father to hurt you."
"Yeah! It really showed when you left me!" Virgil pushed away from Roman's hand and jabbed his finger in his mom's direction. "When you left me with that god awful man!"
"Vee, maybe this isn't a good idea."
"Who are you?"
"I'm Virgil's older brother." She looked over at Virgil again and frowned.
"They never told me you got adopted."
"Because they didn't know you were still alive Martha." She sat up as straight as she could and her eyes went hollow.
"Don't disrespect me boy." Virgil scoffed and leaned back on the wall.
"What're you gonna do about it? You're wasted," he mocked. Roman looked over and frowned. He was crying. This was hurting him. Virgil laughed and closed his eyes, shaking his head. "You're a drunk who abandoned me and now you're paying the price." Martha shook her head and grasped at her chest.
"I thought you came here because you respected me boy."
"No. I came here because I figured maybe you would be willing to apologize." She sat back into the bed and chuckled.
"For what? I figured your father would stop hurting you but not me so I protected myself."
"But not..me," Virgil practically growled. "Would it have hurt you to take me with you?"
"You were useless to me." Virgil flinched back and Roman grabbed his hand.
"Vee lets leave." Virgil nodded and walked towards the door. As Roman opened it he turned around and smirked.
"I hope you had a good life without me."

"Are you okay love?! I knew you shouldn't have gone," Remy cried as he embraced Virgil tightly and planted a warm kiss on his cheek.
"I-I'm fine."
"You're crying!" Virgil hugged Remy back and exhaled deeply.
"It doesn't matter. Because she wasn't even my mom. And it doesn't matter why she hated me..because the most amazing people in the world, that I actually care about, love me."
"Dad's home!" Two small children pattered into the living room and wrapped their arms around Virgil's legs.
"Ah! I missed you kiddos!" Virgil reached down and scooped the smaller child, his daughter Layla into his arms. "Did you help Dad around the house Brayden?"
"Of course!" Virgil knelt down, placing Layla on his knee and wrapping his free arm around Brayden.
"I love both of you so much. And I want you to know that nothing, nothing, will ever change that."
"Love you too Dada," Layla babbled as she kisses Virgil's cheek.
"I love ya dad." Virgil kissed both of their foreheads and pulled them in closer to his body as Remy joined in on the hug. This is the only family I care about.
