The Chosen One
Stampy's POV
I squeezed Sqaishey's hand as we walked into the orphanage. Sister Potty was out here again.
"Greetings," she said in her surly voice. "You made an appointment for Jeff... and Summer?" "Yeah," said Sqaishey. "Well come with me."
We visited Jeff first.
"No way, Stampy!" He cried. "Everyone was saying that you were adopting. What the heck." He beckoned me to his Xbox. "Fancy a round of Hunger Games?"
We messed around for an hour or two. I found that Jeff was really good at Hunger Games. "I learn it from your videos," he said modestly. He won almost every game with me barely giving him a few hints here and there. Sqaishey joined in on the occasion but she was really rather restless.
Finally, after lunch, we visted Summer.
"Stampy! Sqaishey!" she yelled. "Welcome back!" She scuttled around the room, very quickly. In a moment, she had two steaming cups of English Breakfast Tea. I'm not quite sure how.
"I drew you something!" She took out a beautiful watercolour picture. It had Stampy Cat, Sqaishey Duck and a blackened out person, a child in the middle, with a question mark. "I was hoping... that... this guy..." She pointed to the blackened person. "Is gonna be me."
Sqaishey let out a squeak and cupped her mouth. I smiled. "Oh yes? And why?"
"Well... I'd never gotten to know family before, you see. None of us orphans have had. But I've been always separated out due to my, er, ADHD. They think I'm a monster. At least all the others have had a chance to experience relationship, friendship. I haven't. But it's okay if I don't, really. Just... adopt someone you like, okay? Oh, what was I thinking? I don't deserve to be in that picture!"
She snatched the painting and shredded it. "Not a monster like me. I'll just make trouble for you."
Sqaishey had tears in her eyes. I felt a bit overwhelmed that a child of eight years old could say something like that.
I felt lucky. I've been pelted with fan mail, phone calls and excited comments every day. I am known across the world. Which wasn't very important for me.
And here was this girl, the loneliest person on Earth, probably, saying it was okay to not adopt her, because it would cause us trouble. Wow.
I looked at Sqaishey. She nodded. At that moment, we just both knew.
I knelt down in front of Summer. "Summer, you are not a monster. You are, or soon to be, a media darling. A daughter of Mr Stampy Cat."
