Chapter twelve
After school
Jessica's POV
When school was over, I turned to Ross. "If you say one word to them about my detention, I swear I'll hate you forever." I said. "Alright." Ross said. We went outside and mom and dad were there. "How was school?" Mom asked. "Can we please just get home?" I asked. "Jessica! You forgot this!" Emma shouted. "Get going." I said. "Hold up. What did you forget?" Mom asked. Emma ran to me and gave me the detention slip. "I hate you." I said. Emma turned and skipped off. Before I could stuff the slip in my backpack, mom grabbed it. "A detention slip?" She asked. "Look. Guys it wasn't my fault." I said. "You attacked a student and it wasn't your fault?" Dad asked. "Can we please just get going?" I asked. "Fine. But this discussion isn't over." Dad said. I slumped in my seat as he drove off.
Pat's POV
When we pulled into the driveway, Jessica opened the door and got out. She started to go to her room. "Not so fast. You're not going anywhere until we talk about this." I said. "Pat. I think she's telling the truth." Jen said. "I thought you were a good kid." I said. "I am! I was defending my brother!" Jessica yelled. "By attacking another student?" I asked. "I didn't attack her." Jessica said. "I will not tolerate this, Jessica. Hurting another student is not the way to go." I said. "It was Emma's fault, dad! I had enough of her!" Jessica yelled. "Don't yell at me." I said. "Dad. I'm telling the truth. Emma got adopted or something and she goes to my school." Jessica said. "Be quiet, Jessica. I'm tired of your lies." I said. "For the last time. I am not lying." Jessica said. "PAT! SHE'S TELLING THE TRUTH!" Jen yelled. I ignored her. "Mom's right." Jessica muttered. She stormed off and slammed the door to her room. Jen looked at me. "Oh, by the way. You're being an idiot!" She screamed. "How am I being an idiot?" I asked. "That girl who handed her the detention slip. She was from the girls' home." Jen said. Then it hit me. "Just great. I believed the note instead of her." I said. "Pat. She's our daughter. You need to talk to her. Calmly." Jen said. I headed upstairs. Jessica's door was opened. "I'm sorry. I should have listened to you." I said. "It's fine." She said. I walked into her room. "No it's not fine. You did nothing. I should have believed you. Also you don't deserve that detention." I said. "Yeah I do." Jessica said. "Jessica, I mean it. You need to talk to someone." I said.
Jessica's POV
I took a deep breath. "Before whatever the heck happened, Emma and I were friends. One day she was sent to the orphanage. When I got sent there, she started to act like a jerk. It was us and another girl." I said.
As I was talking, I felt a little bit better. Pat hugged me and started to leave. "Pat." I began. He turned to face me. "Yeah?" He asked. I got up and wrapped my arms around his neck and hugged him. "Thanks for adopting me. Dad."
