chapter nine

Pat's POV
I stood in the doorway, holding a gun. I could barely see my daughter. "How did you get here so fast?" The guy asked. "We were five minutes away from here, idiot." I said. The guy looked at me. He grabbed for Jen. I punched him in the face. "Leave my wife and daughter alone." I said. I grabbed the key and threw it to Ross. He unlocked the chains from Jessica's wrists. I picked her up and turned her around. I took the tape off of her mouth. She hugged me. We left. On the way home, I caught a look at Jessica. "Did he hurt you?" I asked. "He tried to give me a pill but I refused. Then he called you." She said. "You're a very smart girl. You know what's bad for you." I said. "He pulled the bottle out when I said that I didn't want to die so I guessed it was drugged to kill me." Jessica said. She paused. "I'm not an idiot."
We didn't say much after that. I pulled into the driveway. When we went inside, Jessica fell asleep on the couch. After awhile, she was still asleep. I put my hand on her forehead. She felt warm. "Jen, feel her head." I said. She did. "She's got a fever." She said. Just then Jessica woke up. Before I could ask her if she was feeling okay, she ran from the room and into the bathroom. Jen and I caught up with her. She was bent over the toilet, throwing up. After she was done, I noticed that her face was flushed. Jen quickly shoved the thermometer in her mouth. She looked shocked but behaved. When it beeped, it was clear that she had a fever. We told her to lay down on the couch. Just as she was heading out of the room, she passed out. I called 911 and soon the ambulance was at our house.
Jen's POV
After some questions, the paramedic came over to me. They were taking her to the hospital and she'll be there for a few days. One of us has to stay with her. I agreed to go with her while Pat took care of the house. As I was leaving in the ambulance, I had one thought. Right now, Jessica is my top priority.
