Chapter 54 - Principals Office... Again...
Vanessa drove me to school the next morning, I was starting to really enjoy our morning car conversations. She dropped me off, and I went inside.
"Hey!" William ran up to me, that was nice.
"Hi!" I replied, "is everything alright?"
"Yeah, everything is fine, why do you ask?" He started walking me toward Spanish a bit early.
"No reason, I guess, I always go to you."
"Oh, we're just sort of switching it up." He replied.
"So, I don't have a ride home today, that's fun." I said, switching the topic.
"Why?"
"Vanessa's at work, and Lin will be like halfway through the matinée."
"Oh, do you wanna come home with me?"
"I'd love to." I replied stopping in front of my Spanish class. "Thanks."
"Oh, well, it's kind of my job. You know, boyfriend." He said pointing to himself.
"Thanks anyway." The bell rang and I went into my class.
Spanish went well, my teacher was passing back work. He handed me my paper, and then handed Josie hers. On my paper he hyphened my name, so it read Abigail Miranda - Hamilton. I laughed a little until I saw Josie's paper, which read Josie Parker de lo Miranda.
"Mr. Cleys?" Josie asked.
"Yes?" He turned around, and Josie held up her paper.
"Explain."
"Well, that's how you hyphen your name in Spanish. So if you two were married, this is how you would write your names. De lo means owner of, so you are Josie Parker owner of Miranda."
"Wait? Owner of?"
"Yes!" My Spanish teacher laughed, "Spanish is the most sexist language!"
"Yeah."
"So you, Parker." He put his hand on Josie's shoulder, "are the owner of Miranda." He put his hand on my shoulder.
The day progressed nicely, until biology. In biology I was called down to the office, again. I'm kinda pissed off at the principal right now, for a good reason.
"You wanted to see me?" I asked tentatively stepping into Mr. Shrums office.
"Yes, have a seat Miss Walter." I rolled my eyes and sat down.
"Actually it's Miranda." I said, thinking back to the hearing.
"Yes, that's what I wanted to talk to you about." He pulled out a packet of paper, which was from the lab I did in bio yesterday. "So your biology teacher showed this to me. So, we need you to write your actual name on your work. We've been letting it slide for a couple months, but now you've changed it again, please, write Abigail Walter on your papers, that's what we have in the system."
"Well. Actually, that's my legal last name. I was officially adopted Monday, so that's my name."
"Well, you're registered at this school as Abigail Walter."
"That's not even my original name. My original name is Abigail Edminston."
"This is what I'm talking about. Edminston, Walter, Hamilton and now Miranda. Please, keep it consistent, according to The Beacon School, your last name is Walter."
"Well, according to the state of New York my last name is Miranda."
"You don't take the last name of your foster family."
"I know, I was adopted, I have a certificate of adoption, I have an amended birth certificate. Also, Walter was the last name of my last foster family, so according to your logic, I shouldn't use that one either."
"Please, just use Walter, it's what's in the computer, makes it easier on everyone."
"No. I won't. I know you don't like me, I honestly don't care. I will write my legal name, and that's that." I stood up to leave.
"Sit back down, Miss whatever your last name is." I didn't sit back down, I made a point about grabbing my crutches and continued to stand.
"Yes."
"Be respectful. I'm an authority figure, to please treat me likewise."
"Practice what you preach." Usually I was respectful to pretty much everyone, but he ticked me off.
"I'll call your parents."
"My dads on my side."
"Oh, Lin? No that's not who we have on file, we have a Kalai Walter on file. Should I call him?" I glared at him, and sat back down. "Now, can you re-phrase that?"
"I'm sorry Mr. Shrum, however I will be using my legal last name. Thank you." I stood up and walked out.
I went back to my bio class, being quite cold to my biology teacher. When school ended I went out and got in Williams car.
"Are you still pissed about your meeting?" William asked starting the car.
"Yeah. What is it that makes him hate me?"
"Honestly babe, I don't know. He just seems kinda against you."
"I'm a people pleaser so, it's weird when someone is so opposed to me."
"You just have to deal with it. I know it sucks."
"Yeah, I guess." He got to his house, finally, it was a while out and we went inside, immediately up to his room.
"So," he said sitting down on his bed, "I have something important to talk to you about." I sat down across from him tentatively.
"Ok. Is something wrong?"
"Yeah. So, uh, this morning Luke Simmons was talking about getting to see Hamilton last night." I immediately knew where this was going, "and he said that he saw you there, at the stage door."
"Yeah, he was at the stage door last night."
"He also said that you guys got to second base. Is that true?" The look on Williams face was hard to describe, it was angry, it was confused, it was skeptical, but it was also pained, hurt, like someone killed a puppy.
"No!" I replied quickly, and the look on his face changed gone was the confusion and skepticism, it was just anger and sadness. "But also, not really."
"What exactly happened?" He had anger in his voice.
"After the show, he was at the stage door, and while I was leaving he stopped me, and I fell back onto him."
"So, it was accidental?" William asked, hope in his voice.
"No. He caught me when I fell."
"So he didn't hurt you?"
"No! Then Lin saw and Luke shoved Lin then Lin yelled at him to never touch me, then Lin punched him."
"Wait, Lin punched Luke? Lin-Manuel Miranda?"
"Yes, what other Lin would I be referring to?"
"I don't know, but, it just doesn't seem like him."
"I was shocked as well."
"So, Lin punched him because he grabbed you?"
"Yeah. Apparently Lin is the protective dad type. It was fun to watch. I mean Luke's punched me before, it was nice to see the tables turned."
"Yeah, I'm gonna hold this over his head."
"As well you should." I laughed a little. We spent a couple hours together before he drove me home at 7:00. I fell asleep before Lin got home, at about 9:45.
I hope I clarified why Lin punched Luke. In my opinion it's a pretty good reason, but to each his own, right? I was tentative about writing that scene, but I've had several comments that I should do that, so I did. Sorry if you think it wasn't accurate.
Thanks for reading.
