Chapter 130 - 16 Tony Noms

"¡Hermana!" I heard Seb from somewhere in my room.

"Sebbie?" I asked, sitting up in bed.

"Hermana." I looked down, to see him by the edge of my bed.

"Seb, what time is it?" I asked, picking him up, I flipped on my phone, so it displayed the time. 6:32. "Are Mama and Papa up?" I asked, standing up, still holding him. I softly padded out of my room, and slowly opened the door to their room, they were both curled up in bed, Tobi at their feet. They were snoring softly. "Okay Sebster, Mama and Papa are sleeping, shh." I carried him out of their room, and brought him, on my hip, into the kitchen.

I opened the fridge, and pulled out Sebs baby food, and bacon and eggs. I carried Sebastian's baby chair into the kitchen, and set him in it. I quietly rummaged through some cabinets. I finally found pancake mix, then pulled it out. I still don't know where anything in this house is.

I started to mix the pancake batter, whilst keeping an eye on the bacon and eggs on the stove top, and of course, my baby brother in his chair. Once I finished the batter, I set the bowl next to the stove, and pulled a large plate out of the cabinet, I moved the bacon and eggs onto that plate, then started to pour the pancake batter. As I was flipping the first of the pancakes, I heard my phone ding. I quickly shoveled all of the pancakes that were on the skillet onto a plate, and checked my phone.

Abuela:
We're on our way, your dad isn't responding so I'm texting you, we'll be there in 30.

Abi:
Okay! We'll be ready! (i.e. I'll wake Lin and Vanessa up)

I sort of forgot that the Tony nominations were today, Lins parents were coming over to watch them with us. I quickly checked the time again, it was 7:02. I finished making up the pancakes, I put them all on a plate, then rushed to make coffee, I felt good, like I was finally pulling my weight in the family. Once the coffee was done, I softly padded down the hallway again, and quietly opened Lin and Vanessa's door.

"Mom, Dad," I said coming in, "wake up."

"Huh?" I saw Vanessa's eyes open. "Oh, morning sweetie." She smiled at me. "Lin, baby, wake up." She pushed him a little to wake him up.

"Give me 10 more minutes." He grumbled.

"Dad, Tony nominations." I said, hoping that would work.

"Did we win?" He asked, rolling over.

"Uh, not yet." I said.

"Wake me up when we've won." He said.

"That won't be for a couple months." I said.

"Exactly." He groaned.

"Dad, Anthony called, he's gonna take me out to a club. He'll be here in five minutes. How short do you think is too short on a skirt? And what exactly defines low cut?"

"I'm up I'm up." He rolled his eyes and sat up in bed. "By the way, you're now officially going to be a nun." He said, "I don't care that we're not religious. You're a nun."

"Dad, it was a joke, look at what I wearing." I laughed a bit, as I saw him take in my pajamas. I was wearing the purple 'Defy Gravity' shirt Daveed got me, fuzzy gray pajama pants, and dog slippers.

"Still a nun mija." He said standing up.

"I smell breakfast." Vanessa said, "did you make breakfast?" She asked.

"Yeah, eggs, bacon and pancakes." I said, smiling.

"You're no longer a nun." Lin said, running out of the room.

"Lin! You're parents'll be here in like, five minutes!" I shouted after him, "wait for them!"

"HURRY UP PAPA." I heard him yell.

"I'll set the table." I told Vanessa, leaving the room. I went back into the kitchen, were I found Lin standing staring at the pile of food. "Five minutes." I said, grabbing plates. "You can do this." I patted his back as I left the room.

"My dad better hurry up." Lin said, yanking his phone out of his pocket.

"It's just going to be Abuelo y Abuela, you and V, and me and Seb, right?" I asked, setting the plates on the table.

"No, Quiara's coming too." He said.

"Okay." I said, coming back into the kitchen, and grabbing 6th plate. "Lin, you do realize I've never met Quiara right?" I asked, crossing back to the table with the extra plate.

"Oh. I actually didn't realize that." He said, "you're gonna like her."

"I know I'm gonna like her, I've just never met her before." I said, coming back into the kitchen to grab the food. As I picked it up, Lin followed me from the kitchen to the table.

"Where am I sitting?" Lin asked as I set the food down.

"Wherever, it's your house." I said, when we heard someone knock on the door. Lin ran over to it, and opened the door quickly.

"Quiara!" He exclaimed, "¿como estas?" He asked.

"Muy bien, y emocionada, ¿y tú?"

"Cansado." He smiled, and I rolled my eyes, continuing to set silverware down.

"Siempre." Quiara laughed a little.

"Oh, uh, Quiara, I'd like you to meet someone," I felt Lins hands on my shoulders, as he spun me around from setting the table. "This is our newest addition, my daughter Abigail."

"Hi." I smiled giving a tiny wave.

"Awe, I've heard so much about you." Quiara said hugging me, "Lin, she's adorable!"

"She also made breakfast." He said, beaming. "Although she won't let me eat it yet."

"Not until Abuelo y Abuela get here." I said.

"She speaks Spanish?" Quiara asked.

"Yes and no." I said, "I'm still learning, I understand Spanish, but I'm nowhere near fluent."

"You'll get fluent." Lin said, hugging me from behind me. "You live here. It's required." He rested his head on top of mine. As soon as he did that, the door opened again.

"Mijo, when did you wake up this morning?" Luz asked walking through the door. "Oh Quiara, how are you?"

"I'm good, and excited." She said.

"Mama, I woke up at like, 7:20 something." He said.

"Mijo, it's 7:29." She said checking her watch. "Did Vanessa make breakfast?" She asked, going over to the table.

"Nope, Abi did." He said.

"Nieta, it smells wonderful." She said, taking me from Lins arms and hugged me herself. Right as she did that Seb started crying.

"Oh, he's in the kitchen, I'll grab him." I detached from her, and ran into the kitchen where I left Seb in his chair from when I was making breakfast.

"Was Sebastian crying this morning?" Lin asked.

"Nope." I said, carrying Seb back in on my hip, holding his breakfast in my other hand.

"Then why did you get him out of bed?" He asked, as I set Sebs food down on the table.

"I didn't." I said, going back into the kitchen to grab his chair.

"What do you mean you didn't get him out of bed?" Lin asked, as I put Seb in his chair.

"He came into my room this morning." I tried to explain.

"Oh, Sebster," Lin bent down in front of his chair, "did you escape bed this morning?" He smiled at his giggling son.

"Papa." Seb squealed, and started poking Lins face.

"Cutie." Lin tousled Sebastian's hair. "I'm going to go grab my better half, then we can have breakfast, then we can watch the nominations."

"How are you kiddo?" Mi abuelo asked.

"I'm good." I smiled.

"I take it you're as excited for the Tony nominations as your father is." He guessed sitting down at the table, across from me.

"Yep." I said, taking the seat next to Sebastian, as it was now my job to feed him.

"Oh, so, I guess Abi's as big of a theatre geek as Lin is." Quiara said sitting at the head of the table.

"Not quite." I said.

"Good morning." Vanessa smiled, coming into the room. She was greeted with a mixed jumble of good mornings, before she took the seat next to mine, across from Lin, who sat between his parents.

Everyone started eating, and I turned my attention the the fussy and hungry Sebastian. I got out of my chair, and knelt in front of him, putting his breakfast on a spoon. I tried to make train noises quietly, but apparently failed, because I could feel everyone watching. I mean, he was eating so, it's not like I was doing something wrong.

"So, the In The Heights movie is essentially official." Quiara said, and I immediately spun my head around to look at her.

"Oh! Kids excited." She said smiling at me.

"Why did I not know about this?" I asked.

"I thought you did." Vanessa looked at me confused, "Lin." She turned to her husband. Who had a face full of pancakes.

"Oh! Uh, great job on breakfast Niñita." He tried to say, but it came out more jumbled and awkward. As I was going to reply, I felt Sebastian's oatmeal hit my cheek. Again.

"¡MÁS!" He yelled clapping.

After breakfast we were sitting in the living room. Luz on a black chair, Quiara stretched out on the end on the couch, Luis cross-legged on the couch with a pad of paper and a pen. Then Lin, Vanessa, Sebastian, and I sitting on the floor. Lins arm was wrapped tightly around Vanessa's waist, and I sat next to Vanessa, who wrapped her arm around my shoulders, pulling me into her side, finally, Sebastian sat on Vanessa's lap.

"Before I turn this on," Vanessa started, "you and you," she pointed to me and Lin, "need to abandon the coffee for a minute. Because I know both of you are going to go crazy and I will not have coffee poured on me."

"Try having oatmeal poured on you." I mumbled setting my coffee down by the couch.

"I heard that missy." Vanessa said. "Now. Please, try not to physically harm me." She said, flipping it on.

"The nominees for best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical are," Nikki began, after Andrew had announced the nominees for plays, "Alex Brightman, School of Rock The Musical, Danny Burnstein, Fiddler on The Roof." As she said this Lin whooped, he's a big Fiddler fan, "Zachary Levi, She Loves Me." I got oddly nervous that Lin wouldn't be nominated, I mean, I knew he didn't want to win it, but, he was amazing, he deserved a nomination. "Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton." There were cheers from all of us in the Miranda household, and then there was Lin.

"Man-WELL. Not Man-you-elle." He was grinning ear to ear.

"Leslie Odom Jr., Hamilton." She concluded.

"AWE YES! MY MAN! THATS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! WHAT!"

"Alright, that's two." Mi abuelo patted Lins shoulder.

"The nominees for best performance by an actress in a leading role in a musical are," Nikki continued, "Laura Benanti, She Loves Me, Carmen Cusack, Bright Star, Cynthia Erivo, The Color Purple, Jessie Mueller, Waitress, Phillipa Soo, Hamilton." She finished.

"HOMEGIRL! I HIRED HER!" There was more of Lin screaming.

"Three." I heard Luis behind me.

"The nominees for Best Musical are," Nikki started, after listing nominees for several other awards, "Bright Star, Hamilton." As soon astray slipped out there was a fourth mass of cheering.

"I'm dumbfounded." I said laughing a little, which merited a playful flick in the head from Lin. After she finished listing off the nominees, they took a little break, and I texted Pippa and Leslie to congratulate them.

Abi:
CONGRATS PIP! You deserve it.

Pippa:
Thanks sweetheart. Steve and I are excited.

Then I texted Leslie.

Abi:
You should've heard Lin when they read your name. Congratulations man.

Leslie didn't see my message, I mean, he must be getting a ton.

"The nominees for best book of a musical are," Andrew started, "Bright Star, by Steve Martian, Hamilton, by Lin-Manuel Miranda."

"OWOW!" I cheered. "What's up!" I yelled.

"That's five." Luis said, marking it.

"Quiara. Now I have a Best Book nomination too."

"Well deserved." She said smiling.

"The nominees for best Original score, music and lyrics written for the theatre are," he continued and the room was silent on our end, "Bright Star, music by Steve Martian and Evie Brickell, lyrics by Evie Brickell, Hamilton, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda." He announced.

"THATS MY SON!" Luis yelled from the couch.

"THATS IT! WHAT!" I screamed, "MY DAD WAS JUST NOMINATED FOR 3 TONYS!" I felt a weird sense of pride in my chest.

"And this is why I banned the coffee." Vanessa said, and I looked up to see Lin dancing around the apartment, "because neither of you need it.

"The nominees for best choreography are," Nikki started, "Andy Blankenbueller, Hamilton."

"AW YEAH! I HIRED HIM TOO. THATS MY DUDE!" Lin kept dancing through the apartment

"Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tony Nominations." I spoke over Nikki, trying to congratulate my father on his dancing.

"Seven nominations guys." Luis said, writing it down.

"The nominees for best orchestrations are," Nikki rolled right into the next section, "August Ericksmon, Bright Star, Larry Hochman, She Loves Me, Alex Lacamoire, Hamilton."

"That's my right hand man!" Lin yelled, "you go Lac."

I fumbled for my phone again. Quickly texting Lac.

Abi:
Congrats man!

My text was simple. But, I mean, he was getting tons.

"The nominees for best scenic design for a musical are Es Devlin and Finn Ross, American Psycho, David Korins, Hamilton."

"We make ropes an barrels interesting! That's my man."

"Alright, we have nine nominations." Luis said, scribbling down David's name.

"The nominees for best costume design of a musical are, Gregg Barnes, for Tuck Everlasting, Jeff Mashee, She Loves Me, Ann Roth, Shuffle Along, Paul Tazwell, Hamilton." She finished with Pauls name.

"We got some dope threads Paul." Lin yelled at the screen.

"And that's ten." Luis said.

"The nominees for best lighting design of a musical are, Howell Binkley, Hamilton."

There were cheers I our end, Howell deserved this, I mean, the lighting for Burn was insane.

"The nominees for best direction of a musical are, Michael Arden, Spring Awakening, John Doyle, The Color Purple, Scott Ellis, She Loves Me, Thomas Kail, Hamilton." She said.

"TOMMY! THATS MY BOY. OH YOU GO GET 'EM TOMMY." Lin was ecstatic.

"12 nominees so far." Luis announced.

"The nominees for best performance by an actor in a featured role in a musical are," Nikki started and I got a little nervous, someone from Hamilton would be nominated here, but, who? "Daveed Diggs, Hamilton,"

"YES! THATS MY UNCLE!" I yelled, which merited weird looks from everyone but Lin, who understood. I yanked my phone out, ready to text him, but before I could click on his contact name, another name caught my attention.

"Jonathan Groff, Hamilton."

"OH MY MAN I LOVE HIM SO! HE'LL NEVER KNOW!" Lin started belting Funny Girl.

"Lin, he knows, you've kissed twice."

"Yeah, about that," Vanessa started.

"Shh." Lin clasped his hand over her mouth.

"Christopher Jackson, Hamilton."

"YES! OH SWEET JESUS YES." Lin yelled, "you were saying." He turned back to his wife.

"Never mind, I give up." She said.

"Uh, guys, that's 15 nominations."

"Wait, we're tied for the record?" Lin spun around, "you got this Renée."

"The nominees for best performance by an actress in a featured role in a musical are," Nikki began, and my breath caught, if Renée is nominated we break the all time record for Tony Nominations. "Danielle Brooks, The Color Purple, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Hamilton."

"YES!" Lin shot upright. "WE DID IT! 16 TONY NOMINATIONS OH CRAP! THATS A RECORD, WE BROKE THE RECORD!" I got up as well, and started jumping around with Lin, he grabbed both my hands and started spinning me around. "Niñita, we made history!" He yelled.
