Nick pov

I call dad up. He picks it up.

Yeah, nick what's up? He asks.

Dad, Di got shot. A man broke into the house. He wanted to shoot me and she jumped in front. I say sitting beside her.

Did you call the ambulance? He asks.

Yeah. I did. I say.

Is she awake? He asks.

Her eyes are closed and she isn't responding when I call her. There is blood all around dad. I say.

Just keep your hand where she got shot. She will be fine Nick. Just slap her on the face and if she wakes up, keeps talking to her don't let her close her eyes. He says.

I did as he said. I slapped her on the face. She woke up her eyes fluttering.

Did she wake up? He asked.

Yeah, she did. I say.

Diana, can you hear me? He asked.

Yeah, dad. She says weakly.

Don't close your eyes, you will be fine. Nothing can harm you, okay, just keep them open. Soon, you will be here, I will make sure you are alive and to yourself in no time. Dad says. Panic was in his voice.

Soon, the ambulance came.

Kid, who are you and what happened? A man asked me as the others rolled Diana into the ambulance.

I am Nick, her brother and a man came and shot her. I say.

Nick, where are your parents? He asks.

They said they would be late. But Sam is a doctor he is at the hospital right now. I say.

Can you give the phone to Sam? He asks.

Yeah. I go and get the phone. Dad was still on the phone

Dr Radford, I am coming there, she's badly injured shot in the chest and abdomen. And she has lost a lot of blood so you know what to prepare for. He says and hangs up.

He takes my hand and we both sit in the ambulance. I hold Diana's hand.

You will be fine. Di. I say

She nods. Soon, we reach the hospital. Dad was there. They rolled her into a room. And all the people began the work asking for things.

Let's roll her into surgery we need to take the bullet out so she doesn't bleed out more. Someone says and they roll her somewhere.

Dad comes out blood all over him.

That's h.....eerr. Bl...oodd. I say stuttering and my hands shaking.

Nick, it is. She will be fine. She is with the best. He says and a tear rolls down his face.

Did you get hurt anywhere? He asks.

No. I say.

That's good. You saved her. He says.

She saved me. She jumped in front. I say.

Diana pov

You are gonna be fine, Diana. Just count back from 10. A man says placing a mask on my face.

10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5. I say as my vision goes blurry.

How many fingers? He asks.

77. I say. And everything goes black all over again.

Sam pov

I couldn't blame nick. I was scared to death myself but I kept calm and they just left the kids all alone with no adult to look after them.

Neil, our neighbour was always there to look after them if I was out. He just worked at home and checked on them every hour.

Diana could die. Or have permanent deficits from this. Her heart might not function to the whole capacity after being shot. She would need a feeding tube for the rest of her life. Many possibilities just ran through my mind.

After a few hours..........

He came out of the room. Bradley. He was with me in residency so I trusted them.

How is she? Give it to me straight don't sugarcoat out. I say.

She can't breathe on her own so she is intubated, her heart is working like it was before I just had to use a patch and rest we will know when she wakes up. He says.

Alright. Can we see her? I ask.

She is in Post op. When she comes to the ICU then you can see her and that will be in like 30 mins. He says. Pats me on the shoulder and walks away.

Dad how is Diana? I didn't understand a word of what that man just said. Nick asks.

I didn't know what to tell him. I very well knew that her not waking up was a possible cause if her brain was without oxygen for 20 minutes, that would mean brain death or lifetime neurological deficits.

I pushed them out of my thoughts and told Nick everything.

He started to cry.

Nick. No one knows what will happen so dont cry. I said.

Nick pov

Dad how can i not? She saved me and now she could die cause of me i dont wanna lose her. I say crying on his shoulder.

Hey no you will not lose her. She will always be there. He said.

Dad you yourself said it was possible. I say.

Yeah. But now i say this. He says.

I fall asleep on his shoulder.

I woke up to machines beeping and dad  crying and the man who told dad what happened in surgery was just patting his back.

I walk up to dad.

Dad what happened? I ask.

Diana is dead Nick. He says.

Diana no. She is dead. Also double update today. How will Sam and Nick deal with her death? Will nick carry this guilt for the rest of his life. Comment below.
