Chapter 13 : A new day
Adar awoke to the warm rays of the Sun on him. He sat up on the bed and looked around. He hadn't gotten a clear view of the room the day before, for his tiredness.
A large brown desk was to the left of the bed, parallel to it. A small stool sat over in the corner. The room was small and void of any decorations.
The window in the room (The only one) was 2 feet by feet. Large blocks of wood were used for the outer structure of it. The window was placed about 3 feet above the bed.
After checking his healing wounds, Adar made his way out of the room and headed for the kitchen.
Melanie and Mrs. Willis were sitting at the table.
Melanie saw Adar walk in. He looked tired, but he smiled as he saw her, even if it was a weak smile.
"Good morning." Said Melanie.
Mrs. Willis had her back to the entrance of the kitchen and quickly turned around, in her chair, to greet Adar.
"Won't you join us?!" Smiled Mrs. Willis.
Adar looked at the plate of tarts that was sitting on the table, a jar of Apple cider to the left of it as well.
"I would like to." Responsed Adar, barely over a whisper.
He sat over beside Mrs. Willis, in front of Melanie.
"How did you sleep?" Asked Melanie, pushing the plate of tarts towards him.
Adar smiled and took a tart,"I slept well. Thank you for asking."
"John is in town. He left this morning." Said Mrs. Willis
Adar nodded.
***
After eating his tart and drinking the rest of the cider, he thanked Mrs.Willis.
Adar got up and headed towards the door.
"And where are you going?" Questioned Mrs.Willis.
Adar looked back at Mrs. Willis, who was beginning to stand up.
"I am going to see how I can help around the house. I'm quite sure Mr. Willis could use my help."
"I'll have none of that!" Exclaimed Mrs. Willis grabbing Adar's arm and leading him back to his room. "You can help out by first resting and getting yourself healed!"
Melanie giggled at seeing Adar's surprised face as he was led away.
I hope he gets better soon, thought Melanie, I pray that he changes his mind about that revenge nonsense.
Adar grunted as Mrs. Willis closed the door.
"Get plenty of rest!" Shouted Mrs. Willis on the other side of the door.
***
"Do you know how to cook?" Asked Mrs. Willis, looking over at Melanie.
She and Melanie were in the back yard collecting eggs from the chicken coop.
The Sun was on it way to setting. Melanie had been surprised at how fast the day had gone by.
She liked the limitless pasture in the back of the house. To the left of the house was the fenced off area for the cows, bull, and sheep.
"Yes." Replied Melanie smiling.
"Would you like to help me?" Asked Mrs. Willis.
Melanie gave a shriek of happiness." I'd love to!"
Mrs. Willis gave a mirth filled laugh."Quite the enthusiastic one aren't you? "
Melanie blushed and nodded." I do tend to get overly excited." She added sheepishly.
"No worries, Melanie. That's a good thing."
Melanie finished filling her small basket with eggs and followed Mrs. Willis out of the coop and to the house.
Mrs. Willis frowned as she entered the house. Melanie walked through the doorway and saw why. Adar sat in one of the chairs. He had a bored look imprinted on his face.
"And what are you doing out of bed, young man?" Asked Mrs. Willis.
Adar stood up and walked toward Mrs. Willis. "I've been bored for the last couple of hours. Is there anything I can do?"
Mrs. Willis sighed and put the basket of eggs on the floor. "Follow me. I could allow this one simple chore."
Adar quickly walked behind her as she headed out. She led him around the side of the house and gave him a bucket half filled of seeds.
"You can feed the chickens. Just grab a handful of these seeds and throw them out evenly when you go into the chicken coop. Make sure to close the door behind you or else they will escape at the first chance ."
Adar nodded with a look of low leveled eagerness on his face. "Thank you."
Mrs. Willis laughed. "I should be thanking you. But if I were a good person I would order you back to get some rest. You are still healing, Adar."
Adar shook his head."I'd feel guilty if I didn't do anything to help out."
Mrs. Willis nodded and headed back in.
Melanie had been getting the food ready and smiled as Mrs. Willis walked in through the kitchen doorway.
"I have most of the ingredients out. I've already cut the potatoes into many pieces."
***
Adar looked over to the far left of the field, nearby the pasture, and saw Mr.Willis working. He was cutting most of the grass with a scythe.
Adar turned his attention back to the chicken and flung another handful of seeds. He noticed a small hen that was not getting her fair share and walked over to her. He grabbed a handful of seeds and placed it under the hen's beak. He blocked the way of the other chickens trying to greedily get the seeds.
"Wait your turn." Said Adar to the other chickens.
How long until I can leave here... Until Christmas! Thought Adar, frustrated. Why did I have to make such a promise? This can't be...
"Adar. " Called out a voice from behind.
He turned to see Melanie standing at the entrance of the chicken coop. Her hands were behind her back, a wide smile on her face. The wind blew the loose strands from her bangs and Adar noticed her hair was combed and in much better condition than two days ago.
Adar finished and walked out, closing the door behind him.
"Why aren't you inside helping Mrs. Willis?" asked Adar.
"Mrs. Willis was worried and asked me to come out here to make sure you were doing well."
Adar smirked." I don't need to be taken care of."
Melanie nodded and looked at Adar's chest, pointing at it." How is your wound? Has it been getting better or worse? Is it getting irritated?"
Adar saw Melanie's concerned facial expression and smiled. "No need to worry. I feel fine. It is healing faster than usual. You really did help me a lot. I am glad to have met and become the friend of a great Apothecary."
Melanie looked away to the side, a bit of embarrassment showing on her face.
Adar saw the effect of the setting Sun's rays on her hair, giving it a lustrous effect.
She really is pretty... Thought Adar. Cane would laugh at me for thinking like this! I guess I should to; its a silly notion to be attracted to someone like Melanie. No need for unrequited feelings.
"Do you want to take a walk in the field?" Asked Melanie, still looking away.
"Yes." Said Adar.
They were walking beside the fence. Adar still had the bucket of seeds in his hand.
"Do you like it here?" Asked Melanie.
"I do enjoy the scenery. I have quite a view from my window."
"How lucky." Said Melanie.
"Lucky? "
"Yes. I don't have a window. It gets so dark in there. I don't like the dark to much."
"Ha, I saw that." Adar chuckled at the remembrance of Melanie being scared and falling off of her stool.
Melanie frowned." You'd better not be laughing about how I was frightened a few nights ago."
A devilish grin escaped Adar's lips. "Never."
Melanie look flustered and bit her bottom lip."You know laughing about it doesn't really help. I feel rather embarrassed about the whole ordeal."
Adar nodded. "I know. "
"How long until you are completely healed?" Asked Melanie, hoping to change the subject.
"John said about a month." Replied Adar," But the way I'm healing now, I would say in about three weeks."
"I can't wait until then." Smiled Melanie.
"Why?"
"John said that once you get better we can head into town. I want to take you to the bakery. The breads are amazing!"
"I'll try to rest more and heal faster then." Said Adar glancing over at Melanie. She was still smiling and looking up at the sky.
This is...This is perfect. Thought Melanie, I have a place to live in without fear and I have people who truly care about me and a good friend. I couldn't ask for more.
"We better head back." Said Melanie. "Its been about an hour now. The food should be ready."
***
"How are you feeling, Adar?" asked Mr. Willis entering the house. Adar and the rest had finished eating, but Mr. Willis still hadn't eaten.
"I'm doing well. I should be out and about helping you in two weeks."
Mr. Willis grinned and put his hat on a rack that was near the door. "Good to hear. I hope we can find you a job in the town, that would be a lot more interesting than working here."
"It doesn't matter to me." Said Adar."Though, I still need to repay you for your hospitality."
"Any time for a friend of John's. I'll be eating now. Martha! Is my food ready! "
"Yes! Come before I eat it!" Yelled Mrs. Willis from the kitchen.
Mr. Willis gave a chuckle and headed for the kitchen.
Adar sat there looking out of the small window of the living room. It was dark outside.
The door opened and John walked in.
He still wore the ankle low, black coat. He had a new white shirt on. The buttons were decorated, going down his shirt. His hair had been cut and he wore new brown trousers. He also had a pair of new leather shoes.
Adar grinned."Were you out to see a potential? "
John shook his head." No such luck for me. I was in town and I was ordered before the Town elders and council."
"What happened?"
"They wish for me to be a part of the town council. I am to be the Physician of the town."
"So I take it you will be staying in this town after all?"
John took his coat off and place it on the hanger." I still have to think about it. Its not such an easy choice."
"John! Is that you?" Said Mrs. Willis as she walked into the living room. "How was your day?"
"It was good. Thank you for asking."
"Won't you be eating? "
"No need." Said John patting his belly."I already ate while in the town. I got to meet up with a few old friends. I saw that Martin is still doing well. He told me he was looking for an apprentice."
"Adar could just be that apprentice." Said Mrs. Willis."Maybe you could put in a good word for him."
"Already wishing for me to leave." Laughed Adar.
John and Mrs. Willis chuckled.
"Well I have to talk to Adar privately." Said John, his tone turning rather serious.
Mrs. Willis noticed and left to go to the kitchen.
Adar looked at John. He was now leaning against the wall, opposite of were he was sitting.
"Adar, I want you to be completely honest with me. What happened the night I and Nathaniel rescued you? And how exactly were you captured?"
***
After explaining some parts ( not all), Adar sighed and stood up stretching."I do not not know how this all came about, but Langstrom specifically targeted my mother."
John frowned, pondering what he had just heard. What does Adar have to do with Langstrom and his past? Where exactly do the points connect?
I wonder if it has anything to do with me owing that person? Thought Adar, Father said I had to repay someone for what they did for me.
¤¤¤¤
"Father what do you mean repay someone?" Asked Adar." Do I have to pay in shillings?"
"No." His father laughed. "Though I wish it were that way."
"Then how?"
"You will have to pay in something that is equal to what that person did for you."
"Do I have to work for the person?"
"Yes... Just a little different from normal."
Said his father. A tear ran down his cheek. He squeezed Adar's hand, never wanting to let go. Adar never saw that tear and that is how he wanted it.
This path, thought his father, It's such a cold and cruel path.
¤¤¤¤
Adar was outside. He had left the house immediately after talking with John.
He had been leaning against the fence and chopping at it with his dagger.
Tears were running down his face. This time, he didn't bother to cover his eyes with his forearm. The moonlight was bright enough for him to see the pasture and the animals as he looked around.
Adar got off the fence and walked towards the back of the house. His body had long stopped aching. He had tore the bandages off, the cloth a red color. He held it out and looked at it, smirking as he did.
I let this happen? Thought Adar, How pathetic...
It all came flooding in. The moments, memories, and scars of the past.
"You useless Imbecile!" screamed his uncle as he struck him.
"Langstrom didn't say how we should kill her..."
"This is a cruel world Adar..."
"I Love you Adar." Said his mother.
Adar covered his ears, even though it would not stop the voices.
Why ...Why ... Why!
Adar looked up at the half moon. The tears now stopped running down his face. A cold breeze blew through his hair. Chills went running down his spine.
That's right! Thought Adar, I have to kill Langstrom! I will not stop until then!
Adar let his hands slowly drop to his sides, letting the red cloth fall to the ground. A grin began to form on his face. It felt unusual, his lips seem to go wider and higher at the edges. His pupils dilated. He gripped his dagger tightly.
I must be skilled at killing ... No... A master at it if I desire to end Lansgtrom in the most proficient way! The Willis's ...John... and Melanie! I can practice on them!
I will-
"Adar?"
He froze, the grin and thoughts vanishing.
Adar turned to look at Melanie.
Her eyes were wide.
"What are you doing, Adar?"
"I-" Unable to answer, he bolted past her and headed towards the house.
"Adar!" He heard her yell, but he ignored her and kept running.
I can't be near her right now... I can't be near anyone!
Adar ran into the house and went into his room. He locked the door and sat on his bed, his knees against his chest. His mother's necklace was in his hand, clenched tightly.
Why am I thinking those thoughts? What's happening? Why...
Adar sat there in the unnerving silence. It sounded so loud and felt lonely, as it always did.
Melanie was about to knock on Adar's door but was stopped by John.
"He needs time to heal..." Said John standing in the living room.
"But he needs help." Replied Melanie. "He...something is not right."
"From the time he was young, things were not right."
*************
A single candle was lit and in the middle of the room on a table.
Griffin kneeled as he entered the room.
"Lord Lehava, there seems to be some complications in locating the boy."
A dark figure came from the end of the room, into the range of the candlelight.
He wore a red, hooded, robe. Only his lower jaw and his hands were visible.
"Complications?" Said the Lehava. His voice was low and powerful.
"Yes my Lord, we have lost track of the boy."
Lehava walked forward and stopped a pace from Griffin.
Griffin kept his head down, daring not look up for fear of what he might see.
Lehava kneeled and placed a pendant in front of Griffin. The pendant was made of a strong metal, the chain for it seeming flexible and stretchable. It was the color black.
"When you find the boy make him wear this...That is an order."
"Is that all my Lord?" Sweat was already dripping onto Griffin's hand, from his forehead.
Griffin looked up after a minute of waiting. Lehava was gone. The flame of the candle was blue. A piece of paper was on the table.
Griffin stood up and walked to the table. He noticed words were written on the torn paper.
He grabbed the letter and held it over the blue flame.
A boy named Aaron, A monster named Adar, they both share the same body. Which one will win? Which one will die? Indeed they shared the same past and body; But they will not share the same future...
