17; Nicole's Wellbeing
Him
After he has discussed the matter with the doctor, he turns to his wife who is sitting on a bench. She has covered her face with her hands as she is bent a little. Her hands tremble and he can see it while her lips move in an inaudible prayer. She looks so vulnerable.
He goes to her and puts a hand on her shoulder, halting all her movements but not her hands that tremble.
She looks up at him, asking, "What did they say?" Her voice is low, almost in a whisper. It wavers a little as anticipation runs through her mind.
"She'll be fine," he mumbles, his hands reaching her face. He wipes away her tears gently with his handkerchief and pushes away the strands of her hair. Her chin wobbles almost like it can't be noticed without paying hard attention but he sees it, not liking any of it.
He likes her smiling.
"She lost too much blood but don't worry, they have the blood group," he says further, putting down his handkerchief.
She unconsciously follows the movement of his hand and her gaze falls upon his gray jacket that has huge blotches of blood. It troubles her heart and her mind replays the memory of what happened when Nicole fell.
Not a moment later, Adam arrived as it was the time of his shift over, and he was shocked to find Nicole's condition. He delayed not even a bit and carried her in his arms to his car. He drove straight to the city hospital and they admitted her.
It's been an hour and he hasn't breathed peacefully at all. He has been busy with the doctors while she has been crying over Nicole's accident and praying to God that nothing would happen to her. Being a doctor herself, she knows she is not a healer, nor are the other doctors.
Her only hope is God because He is the ultimate healer.
Without her knowledge, tears leave her eyes. They are already weary and red. Adam sighs, cupping her face to grab her attention.
"Hey, look at me," he says softly, having those living eyes on himself in an instant. He smiles as an assurance, adding, "They said she'll be alright, okay? And of course, God has heard you and has seen your tears. He'll heal Nicole."
"Amen," is all she murmurs as her eyelids rest for a fleeting moment.
He kisses her temple before turning and they sit for a while in silence. She rests her head on his bicep and he holds her hand, interlocking their fingers. It comforts her, he knows it well and, therefore, leaves not a single room for complaint. His presence is soothing and no doubt why God said, "...and they shall become one." How beautifully He has made men and women and has bound them in a relationship, she feels it whenever she looks at Adam; whenever she is around him, and whenever he holds her.
And so the way she knows that the Lord loves this world.
They sit like that as minutes pass. Evalena expects news about Nicole's well-being only, and Adam knows he can trust God in all things and later be grateful to Him for all He has done.
Minutes turn into an hour and Adam feels her head rolling down. He immediately reaches out to touch her forehead so that she won't fall.
Her nap breaks and she stares at him in confusion. "What?" She whispers, blinking at him.
"I should've asked Ethan to take you home," he says while taking out his mobile, "Anyway, you should leave now. Barak needs you more."
"And what about you?"
"Let's see what the doctor would say. I'll let you know. If I needed to stay a night, I'd tell you." He goes to dial Ethan as he says while Evalena watches him silently, folding her arms on her chest.
She only hums, looking down at her lap. It doesn't sound well that she would have to spend a night without Adam being beside her. She steals a glance at him as he stands tall to answer Ethan over the phone. He walks away and Evalena waits until he arrives, putting his mobile back.
He comes after a few minutes and tells her that Ethan would be here anytime.
"Do her parents know?" She asks once he comes to sit beside her.
"I can't hide anything from them. They'll be here by the morning." He shrugs.
She nods in understanding and remains silent after that. As he has said, Ethan comes. They walk out of the building where Evalena gets inside the car to leave but not before Adam kisses her face.
He pulls his head and stares into her eyes. A slight tilt of his head protects her from the light coming from behind him through the light poll that stands tall for the visitor's help in the dark. Because of winter, the day sets early.
"Take care of yourself and Barak," he says near her face, his foggy breath caressing her rosy cheek because of the chill around.
"I will," she answers him quietly.
He smiles, caressing her cheek.
He has caught that addicting feeling of touching her every time and he isn't letting go of it, petting it like his favorite. The contact of their skins is what his soul commands him to achieve and his spirit doesn't even hold him back.
Slowly, he pulls back from the car window and waves his hand at her as Ethan pulls away the car.

The night he had to spend in the hospital and he told Evalena about this. On call, he noticed her silence and lack of response when she heard that he wouldn't be coming that night, and he wanted to cheer her up but before he could say anything, she disconnected the line.
He didn't call back, knowing that she would need rest.
Soon, while it was still time for the glimpse of the sun, Nicole's parents arrived. He told them everything. Her mother, being overdramatic, was too worried about her daughter even though the doctors said that she was alright and only needed to gain consciousness. Meanwhile, her father was glad to find that it wasn't something very terrible. He loved his daughter but couldn't remain rigid after finding that the Lord was merciful to his daughter and saved her.
Finally, Adam could come home after an hour when it was still dawn. He entered the silent living room and once again, the maids were gossiping with each other.
Holding the mop, she said, "Do you think it was real? See, we all know that Lady Nicole is evil. She can throw a drama."
"How cruel of you to imagine such! It was terrible. Lady Nicole wouldn't throw an act when it's this risky. We must admit that our Mistress was careless."
They became silent for a moment as they saw Adam going upstairs. But they didn't forget their manners to bow to him and greet him. He only nodded, not giving them unnecessary attention, not even to their words. However, the last statement couldn't escape his ears, followed by an accusation that made him frown.
As she said, "She pushed lady Nicole from the top."
No, he knows Evalena won't do such a thing.
He opens the door and is greeted by Evalena who is sitting on a mattress, her knees bent freely, but not under her thighs. Her eyes are closed, her head covered with a white dupatta and her lips move in an inaudible prayer.
He breathed deeply, closing the door behind himself. The sound it releases is not audible at all, this carefully he shut the door. He did not want to disturb her so he went straight into the bathroom for a shower.
Nearly half an hour later, he comes out while ruffling his wet hair with the towel. He hangs it in its place and goes to sit beside her, because he knows that the Lord sits in front of her when she prays.
She doesn't move even an inch, acknowledging his presence but he knows that she knows he is here.
The fresh scent of his body wash wafts through her nostrils, as if surrounding her. The touch of earthiness is addictive like the herbs of Himalaya.
He beholds her silently, breathing in her sweet warmth. She looks more beautiful to him while praying. She doesn't know how prettily, like a soft glow from above, her face radiates when she prays or maybe it's just his eyes and calm mind that makes him look at her in a different way.
He inches closer, saying, "Pray for me as well."
Though her eyes remain closed when he whispers into her ear, she nods, holding her hands before her face. She turns to him and opens her eyes. His face is the first thing she beholds after her prayer and unconsciously, a smile pulls on her lips. She couldn't help it, nor could he after her.
Call her outdated or whatever but loving Adam feels like a blessing itself to her. Her heart is content in her bosom, a kind of sweet warmth spreading inside after the didar of her beloved because she has spent a night without him.
She cups his face, her thumb grazing his stubble. His skin is cold after the shower.
She lets her eyes flutter over his handsome features while she prays under her breath. Her words could go unheard to him if there was noise around and a huge distance between them but Adam catches the sweetness of verses being spilled from her lips like honey dripping from the freshest of honeycomb.
She knows what she is asking of the Lord and how honored it feels to have a wife who knows the Word of the Lord, ask Adam.
He looks up from her lips to her eyes and she looks lost. Like the era has been arrested. Her senses seem nowhere to be found, as this is the way she beholds her husband. Like she has beheld the light falling from third heaven.
Her thumb unconsciously keeps caressing his skin and once done, she confirms her prayer by saying, "In the sweet name of Jesus, Amen."
She then gets up and prays over Barak, too. Adam knows she was thinking about him only. Because the longingness in his eyes couldn't escape his stare. Doesn't he know how to read her effortlessly? But he surely wonders what she thinks about him in her head—the place is so secretive.
He comes and sits beside Barak, saying, "I'd have to fire the staff, I guess. I need to talk to Liam." He leads to a normal conversation, mentioning what he heard downstairs.
"Have you heard them gossiping about me again?" Evalena comes and sits in front of him, guessing right and Adam is somewhat surprised to know that Evalena knows what the maids say behind her back. "You don't have to. Spare them this time again," she says a request and Adam seems to struggle inside to deny her.
Along with that, getting used to her nearness, he wants to hold her but the distance she keeps between them doesn't allow him.
"They need to know that you're the Mistress of this house. They can't keep talking nonsense behind your back," he says with distaste. He doesn't like even a bit when someone tries to speak nonsense about his wife. He wants her to be honored by everyone as he honors her.
"They'd learn. Besides, it's human tendency to judge others."
Adam scoffs. "Only this time," he mutters under his breath, granting her wish. Evalena smiles, glad that he listened to her.
"Thanks. And how's Nicole? Has her parents arrived?"
"Yeah, they're there, waiting for her to gain consciousness. The doctors said she was fine, and only needs to open her eyes. After a few checkups, they'll discharge her."
"Good," she mumbles, ending the conversation regarding Nicole.
Even though the woman is in the hospital, badly wounded, Evalena can't ignore that Nicole tried to mislead Barak and many times even tried to backbite her. Oh, doesn't she know that behind her back, with Adam, she was filling his ears? She knows it well. She heard her speaking against her to Adam but he took Evalena's side once again. By this, she realizes again and again that she has Adam's trust even after she broke it in the past.
"Anyway, I had something to say. It's a request."
"Say, and it'll be granted to you."
Evalena is stunned by hearing his words. Is this the way he indeed shows his feelings towards her? By letting her know that he trusts her no matter what?
"I haven't even said it. Think before granting me already." She chuckles, shaking her head. "Or have I impressed you enough, my lord?" She bows dramatically, making him chuckle as well. However, the deep and alluring sound of it has her heart melted in her chest. He is attractive in anything. He is created this way, after all.
"You aren't going to ask for my life, are you?" He cocks a brow with a tilt of his head, and he doesn't know how more attractive and hot he looks this way. Especially when a few of his dark and wet strands kiss his forehead. He looks younger when he's like that.
Amusement catches her enchanting green eyes. "Are you afraid of losing your life to me?" The border of her dupatta slips down her head, landing over her shoulder. He notices the subtle movement as his eyes flutter to it.
"So much," he sighs, asking, "Come here."
She does it, going closer to him. She sits right in front of him, humming. Her legs fold as she hugs her knees, leaning ahead. While Adam's feet touch the mattress on the floor.
"I expected a romantic answer from you. Where's that Professor Rizzler?" She wiggles her eyebrows playfully.
He smiles. How often. His hands reach out to her dupatta as he holds the border and sets it over her head again. She follows the movement and hears an answer from him, "I don't wanna lose my life to anyone before coming to a good age. I wanna see my Barak grow up and have a successful life. I wanna make sure he walks the way the Lord admires and then I wanna see his family." He pushes a wisp of her hair behind her ear. Her hair is wet, and his fingers feel it. His eyes behold her beautiful face and the lost look in her eyes like once again she has found the wonders of creation in his golden orbs.
He doesn't disturb her but his fingertip traces the side of her face. From her eyebrow to her chin, he traces it leisurely. His hand stops at her jaw and he caresses the skin there, gliding ahead to her ear where dangles a wisp of her long hair.
Tugging it behind her ear, he continues, "I wanna spend my life with you, of course. I don't wanna leave before I..."
Evalena's brows pull together in confusion when he stops as if he has just realized that he shouldn't speak this. What was it about? She wonders.
"Before you?" She urges him to complete it.
He sighs. "Nothing," he says, shaking his head. His eyes leave her face.
"No, tell me!" She holds his face, making him look at her. "It's about me. Don't hide it, Adam!"
He chuckles at her childish way of asking. He releases his face but doesn't let go of her dainty wrists.
"Okay, then find out for yourself."
She frowns and pushes him away. "How cruel! This is the second thing you're hiding from me!" However, he doesn't let go of her.
He holds her hand, keeping her close. "I'm not hiding. I just want you to find it by yourself." Silence leads as they stare at each other, and the next minute, he says, "Anyway, what's your request? Tell me."
"Ah-huh! What a brilliant way to get rid of my question, yeah?" She narrows her eyes at him, complying anyway, "I wanted to tell you about what happened yesterday."
Confusion masks his face and he doesn't hide it. "What about yesterday?" He asks.
"Nicole." She sighs, her gaze traveling from Adam to Barak as she continues, "Yesterday I found Nicole was talking with Barak. She was mentioning Nora and comparing her with me."
Adam purses her lips, his heart telling him to believe Evalena because the probabilities are already high. He listens to her as she continues, "She asked him if I treat him well but I'd never be able to take Nora's place." She sighs, lifting her gaze up to Adam and adding her accusation, "She was instigating Barak against me, and I don't know what she's going to achieve from it."
Barak moves in his sleep, mumbling something under his breath that halts Evalena. Adam puts his hand on Barak's head and caresses his scalps, letting him fall back into sleep. His winter holidays have started. They don't want to disturb him in the early morning.
"What do you want me to do here?" He points towards her request which she wanted to make.
"I don't want her in my house anymore."
He hums, nodding his head. "Okay, I'll take care of that," he assures her but he is disappointed with Nicole in his heart. Quite deeply.
He treated her like his sister and this was what she was doing behind his back to his child. Inciting him to hate his mother. Really? And he, too, wanted to know what she was going to achieve by doing it. What enmity did she have with Evalena?
Though questions flood his mind, he keeps them there, not speaking them in front of his wife to stress her anymore. He spends half of his day with Barak, playing with him and taking him out for a bicycle ride and after they come back, he asks Evalena if she'd want to go with him to the hospital to visit Nicole.
Evalena agrees.
